HR Happy Hour 135 - 'Simulation Learning' - Feb 10,2012 | HR Happy Hour Episiode 135 - Simulation Learning Sponsored by Aquire Thursday Feb. 9, 2012 - 8:00PM ET Call in on 646-378-1086 Follow the backchannel on Twitter - hash tag #HRHappyHour Simulation learning really isn’t new. Remember when you were a child and your favorite response was “I can do it myself!” You then proceeded to copy the actions of the person you found so interesting and so, learned how to accomplish a skill on your own, by doing. That thought process holds true today. Adults learn best by doing. We learn when we use skills, correctly or incorrectly. We learn when we make mistakes in attempting to solve a problem. We learn when we are faced with a challenge and must involve others in finding the best possible solution. Simulation learning provides an opportunity to use skills, to make mistakes, to involve others in a safe environment for achieving new abilities. We use real world situations, situations managers might encounter regularly in the work world. We add to those situations new situations that push an individual, that challenge a person, that encourage new ways of thinking. This week on the show we welcome Kaye Mahon, Partner at Leadership Action Centre, and an expert on simulation and experiential learning to talk about the beneftis and opportunities of simulation learning, and how simulation learning can improve outcomes and company culture. It should be an interesting show, and I hope you can join us! | 2/9/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour 133 - 'Big HR Ideas for 2012' - Jan 27,2012 | HR Happy Hour Episode 133 - Big HR Ideas for 2012 Thursday January 26, 2012 - 8:00PM ET Call in - 646-378-1086 Follow the backchannel on Twitter - hashtag #HRHappyHour 2012 is just getting started and we did not really do a ‘Preview’ type show on the HR Happy Hour - a wider or bigger picture view of the big ideas, trends, challenges, etc. that we see organizations and HR leaders having to deal with and address in 2012. For many organizations 2012 will be a pivotal year. As the US and other economies slowly inch out of the long economic downturn and move back into growth and hopefully hiring mode, leaders and HR professionals might find themselves in a kind of transition period, between the slashing, cutting, and paring down period of recent years to a new phase of opportunity and growth. Change, growth, and adoption of new technologies is never an easy process, and often a little slower than we might desire. The history of enterprise tech and HR Tech in particular tell an interesting story and provide some important lessons to HR leaders today. Having insight into the past helps us plan for the future. This week on the show I am pleased to welcome HR industry legend Row Henson for a conversation about some of these big issues and challenges for HR leaders, as well as what HR leaders should be thinking about in 2012 and beyond. Row will lend her insight, perspective, and real world examples from the many leaders and organizations that she works with and supports, to talk about 2012, the big themes that we see impacting the Human Capital space, and what we think leading and innovative organizations will be doing to get a leg up on their competition. It should be a really fun show and I hope you can join us! | 1/26/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Best of HR Happy Hour - Ep. 108 - 'The HR Echo Chamber' - Jan 13,2012 | Note: This is a replay of Episode 108 - originally aired on July 7, 2011 HR Happy Hour - Episode 108 - The HR Echo Chamber Sponsored by Aquire Follow on Twitter - Hashtag #HRHappyHour This week the HR Happy Hour Show goes a bit inside baseball so to speak, with an examination and conversation about the state of the HR blogosphere; the increasing amount of activity, participation, and possible noise in the online HR space; and a look at whether or not all this activity, content creation, and energy expenditure is having an impact on the day-to-day practice of HR and Talent Management in organizations. Social and participatory technologies have created more forums for the creation and propagation of news, opinion, insight, and quite honestly promotion and advertising, that it seems like not a minute of the day goes by without a new blog post being published, a webinar being given, or a series of hashtag-indicated live tweets from one of the newly created grass-roots gatherings. But are the HR bloggers/speakers/social mavens having an impact in the real world of HR? Are we really just saying lots of similar things to a discrete and committed audience? Is the sheer volume making it impossible to keep up, and to discover the real value and insights being created and shared in the space? Join guests Kris Dunn, John Sumser, and guest co-host Trish McFarlane with host Steve Boese for a look at the state of the online HR world. I hope you can join us! | 1/12/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - 130 - 'NBA 2012 Season Preview' - Dec 23,2011 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 130 - NBA 2012 Season Preview Sponsored by Aquire Thursday December 22, 2011 - 8PM ET Call in 646-378-1086 Follow the backchannel conversation on Twitter - hashtag #HRHappyHour Our long national nightmare is finally over. No, I am not talking about the Republican campaign for the Presidential nomination, but the NBA lockout that for a time flirted with the disastrous cancellation of the 2011-2012 NBA season. Now that the labor issues are settled, and (most of) the wheeling and dealing is done, the National Basketball Association is set to embark upon its season with a full slate of marquee games on Christmas day. And since the Association represents probably the most interesting, compelling, and downright fun set of characters, storylines, and athletes in professional sports today, the HR Happy Hour show in partnership with The 8 Man Rotation, (Kris Dunn, Tim Sackett, Matt Stollak, Lance Haun, Steve Boese), will devote the final show of 2011 to a full-on, no lame attempts to tie sports back to work or HR, preview of the upcoming season. What will the late start, short training camps, and compressed schedule mean for the league? What teams made the sharpest moves in the off season? What clubs are ready to win now? What teams might just surprise this year? What players are on the decline and who is on the rise? The teams, the players, and the predictions for 2012 - you will hear it all and more on the HR Happy Hour Show this week. The NBA - this week on the HR Happy Hour. It will be a fun departure for the show this week and I hope you will join us! | 12/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Fast forward to today, where the internet, mobile access, social networks and other factors have combined to shift the flow of technological change and progress. Now, individuals have access to tools, networks, ideas, and each other in unprecedented ways, and in a manner that is changing the way we work, and the way the HR organization of the future will have to support their companies. Joining us to tackle these questions will be Yvette Cameron from Constellation Research with insights from Constellation’s latest research and their ongoing investigation of the Future of Work and its impact on people, processes and technologies. HR Happy Hour 124 - 'Occupy HR' - Nov 04,2011 | HR Happy Hour Episose #124 - Occupy HR Sponsored by Aquire Thursday November 3, 2011 - 8:00PM ET Call in 646-378-1086 Follow the backchannel on Twitter - #HRHappyHour The Occupy protests have seemingly taken root beyond their humble start in NYC protesting against the perception of Wall St. greed and excess, and have begun to morph into something bigger, more fundamental, and potentially more meaningful that anyone originally would have thought. What do these protests have to do with Human Resources and the workforce? Well, plenty - shrinking job prospects and stagnant wage growth for the 99% are a key element in these protests. But at the same time, many people, including HR pros feel like the Occupiers are simply spoiled and feeling entitled. They want them to get out of the park and go get a job. This week on the HR Happy Hour Show we are having an open forum for the HR and Talent community to share their views on the Occupy movement, and hopefully to have some constructive dialogue on what we can all do to help turn things around. So this is your chance, loyal HR Happy Hour listeners, to get off the backchannel for a minute and join the conversation on the show. No guests, no specific agenda, no rules - just an open conversation about the Occupy movement, the lingering problems of unemployement and the stagnation of real income for most Americans, and the ways that organizations and HR professionals can make a difference for good. It should be a fun show and I hope you will join us - and call in! | 11/3/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Youve probably read, seen, or at least heard of the Moneyball, the 2003 book by Michael Lewis that documented the innovative approaches for architecting the Oakland As baseball club in the early 2000s. Simply stated, the As, led by GM Billy Beane, implemented a highly analytical approach to talent acquisition, strategy, and evaluation that allowed them, (for a time), to acheive success against their much better funded competitors. Can Moneyball correlate and resonate with Talent and HR pros today? What lessons can we take away from the analytical approach to talent? Can we really leverage a trade secret for all that long? Tonight on the show we will kick it around, and maybe even mix in some NBA lockout, baseball playoffs, and WNBA finals chat as well. HR Happy Hour 115 - 'The New Employer Branding' - Aug 26,2011 | HR Happy Hour Episode 115 - The New Employer Branding Sponsored by Aquire Thursday, August 25, 2011 - 8PM ET Call in 646-378-1086 Follow the conversation on Twitter - hashtag #HRHappyHour The internet, the rise of social media, the constant connectivity that mobile smart phones and tablets provide have changed and impacted every form of communication and commerce. The ways that companies market goods and services, how they support customers, and certainly how they engage current employees and recruit new ones barely resemble many of the practices and processes from just a few years ago. Consumers expect information in real-time, with multiple delivery mechanisms, and the ability to sometimes participate in the process of production and delivery. And if a brand fails to act responsibly and respond positively to these seismic shifts, well they run the risk of being left behind. In the HR and recuiting space, companies are also increasingly mindful of their public face, the messages and implied promises that their employer brand makes to their communities. What does the company believe? What do they reward? What kinds of people like to work there? What does it mean to be one of them? Employer brand is about all this and even more. HR Happy Hour - Episode 90 - 'Liquid Leadership ' - Mar 11,2011 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 90 - 'Liquid Leadership ' Thursday, March 10, 2011 - 8PM ET Call in 646-378-1086 Do generational differences matter? In society, in politics, in the workplace? For all the argument, debate, and discussion about the impact of Gen Y and Millennials as 'blocks', there are an equal amount of arguments that claim these generational labels are meaningless, and people need to be valued and managed simply as individuals. Does the greater context of life experience, exposure to technology, and the major societal events actually shape and help define a generation in ways that can be evaluated and leveraged. Can multiple generations survive and thrive in the workplace if these larger and broader trends are not appreciated? This week on the show, we will be joined by Brad Szollose, author of 'Liquid Leadership: From Woodstock to Wikipedia, Multi-generational Management Ideas That are Changing the Way We Run Things' to talk about these issues. I know the GenY is a silly label folks will be out in force telling us these kinds of debates are crazy, but I am not so sure. Decide for yourselves this week! | 3/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 89 - 'The Union Label ' - Mar 04,2011 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 89 - 'The Union Label ' Thursday March 3, 2011 - 8PM ET Call in 646-378-1086 We've been doing the HR Happy Hour show for close to two years, and we've never done a 'unions' or 'organized labor' show before. Why? Well, for the most part unions and organized labor were not really topical, not terribly interesting, and seemingly almost a relic of a earlier time in industrial America. But in just the last few weeks the news from Wisconsin has thrust unions, labor relations, and collective bargaining from the dimly-lit back room to the front page. Today, you can't tune in to any cable news channel without getting the latest update from the statehouse in Madison. All of a sudden, we've all received a 10-minute course in collective bargaining. Do the events in Wisconsin have broader, more universal implications? Is this really a kind of 'Custer's last stand' for public sector unions in America? Do unions even have a place any more, in an economic landscape increasingly marked by rapid change, and institutions that are forced to evolve and adapt much faster than ever before? And one final question - since the issue of union support seems to be almost entirely tied up in politics, are elected officials of all stripes taking advantage of the situation in Wisconsin (and other states) to further there own aims? Lots of questions, lots of passion, and no easy answers. But after two years the HR Happy Hour will at least open up the floor as we talk about unions, labor, politics, and the future of work. Our labor relations guy, Mike VanDervort will join us for the show, as well as MIT's Thomas Kochan, and maybe even an additional guest or two, but we really want you the listener to join the conversation as well. Postscript - who remembers the 'Look for the union label' song? | 3/3/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 88 - 'Feedback and Performance' - Feb 25,2011 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 88 - 'Feedback and Performance' Thursday February 24, 2011 - 8PM ET Call in 646-378-1086 Dread the annual performance review? Well, join pretty much all your colleagues and friends that have come to loathe that yearly exercise in futility, discomfort, and double-talk. Want to share the good news and recognize the great contributions of your team, your peers, or even your managers? I guess you could send an email. Better not 'copy all' though, because people get enough email every day. Maybe you could just get them a gift card or something. Although who will remember the $25 pop at Olive Garden come review time next spring. Hate the tools and sytems (HRIS, Talent Management, collaboration) that your organization has foisted on you? Join the club. Man it would be nice to get some help with the performance/feedback process, with the peer and team recognition process, and using a system that was actually fun and engaging. That would be pretty awesome. And what is more awesome is that there actually is a solution that can help your organization with all those problems, it is called Rypple. And better still Rypple co-CEO Dan Debow and Rypple Head of Sales David Priemer will be our guests this week to talk feedback, performance, and why enterprise software doesn't have to suck. It should be a fun and interesting show as we welcome the smarties from Rypple. | 2/24/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 87 - 'Robots and Social Networks' - Feb 18,2011 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 87 - 'Robots and Social Networks' Thursday February 17, 2011 In the last thirty years the remarkable advances in technology have irreversibly changed and shaped our relationship with these technologies, and quite possibly each other. Whether it is the development and increasing influence of smart and sociable robots, or the constant connectivity and apparent intimacy of social networks like Facebook and Twitter; these modern technologies have impacted us in ways that perhaps were unanticipated, unwanted, and potentially detrimental. Do the advances in robot technology detract from our ability to connect and relate to each other? Does the constant connectivity, the prevalence of lives led online, in virtual relationships that have the potential to overtake our real world connections, threaten to drive us, paradoxically, into increased solitude? Are we trading the real for the artificial? And if so, what does that mean for us, for our relationships, our understanding of privacy, and for the future of our workplaces? Joining us on the show will be Professor Sherry Turkle of MIT, and author of 'Alone Together', to talk about the implications of the advances in these technologies, and the potential impacts, both good and bad, from the rise of the social age. This should be an interesting and provocative show, and I hope you can join us. | 2/17/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Point is, with smart and interesting guys like Bryan and William, you never know what direction we may head. From their shows you know Bryan and William are never shy from stating their opinions, and you can be absolutely sure for a fun, interesting, provocative, and highly entertaining hour. HR Happy Hour - Episode 85 - 'Networks and Work' - Feb 04,2011 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 85 - 'Networks and Work' Thursday February 3, 2011 - 8PM ET It's not what you know, it's who you know. That old business axiom has been around since the rolodex and filofax days, but it likely has never been more true than it is today for the modern organization. Tapping in to the knowledge, professional, and social network connections of employees, alumni, partners, and even fans is fast becoming a key competitive differentiator for many progressive companies. But how does a enlightened leader take these ideas, which are kind of abstract, and distill and improve on them such that they become actionable and deliverable assets? What are the relevant networks and approaches for organizations to support, develop, and maintain? Can you really keep alumni engaged and valued after they leave? How open or closed should these networks be? Joining us on the show to talk about the power and potential of networks will be CEO of SelectMinds, Anne Berkowitch, along with SelectMinds Director of Product Marketing, Jim Milton. I hope you can join us for what should be an interesting and fun show. Call in 646-378-1086 | 2/3/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 83 - 'Leadership in the Social Age' - Jan 21,2011 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 83 - 'Leadership in the Social Age' Thursday January 20, 2011 - 8PM ET Social Networking and Social Media are changing, influencing, and at times making traditional approaches to management and leadership seem somewhat dated, and perhaps ineffective. Leadership and Leadership Development in particular face new opportunities and difficult conundrums driven by the rapid growth of social media, and for more traditional leaders, particularly when faced with the changes in expectations these challenges are more pressing and acute. This week on the show we will be joined by Kevin Eikenberry, leadership expert and author to talk about leadership in the social age. What new challenges does social present for leaders? What if the leader is not naturally 'social'? Are the expectations of employees, customers, and the public for more openness and transparency forcing many leaders out of their comfort zones? Finally, we will also look at how current and aspiring leaders can further their own development by leveraging resources and approaches in the social space, as well as how HR professionals can incorporate social aspects into current leadership development initiatives. HR Happy Hour - Episode 79 - 'The New Communities' - Dec 17,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 79 - 'The New Communities' Thursday December 16, 2010 - 8PM ET 'Community' might rival 'transparency' and 'engagement' as one of the most often repeated, and potentially misunderstood terms of the social networking age. 'Communities', especially online ones, take many forms, have a wide variety of platforms, and operate in so many different ways that it might be said that every community, be it a customer community, an employee community, or even the greater collection of people living in a city or supporting a cause, has it's own unique and distinct characteristics, needs, and benefits. With so many companies and HR organizations grappling the diverse and complex concepts of 'community', we thought it time to talk about communities, community management, and some of the ways organizations can extract the most value out of their supported communities, while simultaneously contributing to the community goals. Our guests will be Teresa Basich, Community Manager for Radian6, and two great guests from Kodak, Chief Blogger Jenny Cisney, and Community Manager Shruti Goradia. I hope you can join us for a fun and interesting discussion on communities and community management in this, the age of social networking. | 12/16/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 78 - 'Politics, Religion, and Work' - Dec 10,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 78 - 'Politics, Religion, and Work' Thursday December 9, 2010 When it comes to what drives alliances and differences in the workforce, generational lines have nothing on politics or religion. In a poll reported on by MSNBC just before the last election, over 70% of people admitted to not being able to control their passions when it comes to politics. Think about that... how many people get so worked up over their generation that they can't control their emotions? So on Thursday night, let's dive in. Here's what we already know: -The company policy exists. -It's bad business to discriminate for any reason, including religious or political beliefs. -It's also illegal. -It's socially dangerous to talk politics at work. -Religion and politics are both are facing major crises of confidence today. Bad business? Illegal? Social danger? Institutions in crisis? This is starting point... let's see where it goes. HR Happy Hour - Episode 76 - 'Wellness Strikes Back' - Nov 19,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 76 - 'Wellness Strikes Back' Thursday November 18, 2010 - 8PM ET The HR Happy Hour takes a second crack at the topic of 'Wellness' in the workplace with 'Wellness Strikes Back'. The first wellness show back in September had a few technical glitches, and we knew that the topic and our great panel of guests deserved a second airing, and the opportunity to do it right. Thankfully, our experts Tanya Barham, Greg Matthews, and Fran Melmed were able to join us again to talk about the increasingly important topic of wellness in the workplace. How do organizations try and sustain the momentum after Open Enrollment, what is the role that incentives and rewards play in workplace wellness initiatives, and why does it seem an evil conspiracy that McRib season and Open Enrollment season seem to totally overlap are just some of the topics we will hit. What is the role of culture and the importance of metrics in enterprise collaboration efforts? And can you do any of this without new technology? This week we will take on the 'HR and Enterprise Collaboration' topic with two guests that can share different but complementary views and expertise. HR Happy Hour: 'HR Horror Stories II' - Oct 29,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 73 - 'HR Horror Stories II' Thursday October 28, 2010 - 8PM ET Sequels are a funny thing. For every sequel that kicks butt and helps to further the story, (think Empire Strikes Back), there are about a dozen that are a ridiculous waste of time. Last year, just before Halloween, we held the first 'HR Horror Stories' show, and it was EPIC. Listeners called in to share some of the most incredible, frightening, and cringe-worthy tales from their time in HR, Recruiting, and general management. Look, we all know people do some crazy, inappropriate, and shocking stuff at work. And we know that most of the time HR has to come in and clean up the mess. Since we know that even though last year's HR Horror Stories show was off the chain, there are even more wild stories out there that need to be told. So this week, in the spirit of the season, it is 'HR Horror Stories II'. No scheduled guests. No agenda. Just you calling in to share your tales of shock and awe from your time on the front lines. Crazy interview stories, harassment, fraud, embezzlement? You name it, it is fair game this week. And if we don't get enough 'Horror Stories' called in, I will talk about basketball for the entire show. You have been warned. | 10/28/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 66 - 'Wrestling with Wellness' - Sep 24,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 66 - 'Wrestling with Wellness' Thursday September 23, 2010 - 8PM ET Subtitle - 'It is quite possible you are too fat to work here'. You can't swing a cat around the office these days without coming up against some corporate wellness type initiatives. Whether it is Sally in Accounting handing you a pedometer, a company sponsored Weight Watchers meeting (oddly they are always at lunch time), or the benefits team trying to convince, cajole, or badger you into quitting smoking, twinkies, or sitting on your butt all week. Wellness in the workplace is a fact of life for many of us now, and for the folks in the organization responsible for keeping the company's benefits costs under control, it is really a serious matter. But wellness at work is kind of a contradictory concept. We want folks to work like dogs, put in extra hours, fuel up on caffeine to keep going, and often engage in lots of behaviors that are not all the 'well'. And the idea of an employer monitoring your habits, diet, and really personal affairs does not sit well with many employees. And the last thing we want is for the company or employees to turn into the diet police at work. But health care costs spiral out of control, and orgs can't continue to bear these increases (and neither can employees). So where is the happy medium between 'big brother' monitoring and thoughtful, successful, and enlightened wellness programs. I am not sure, so this week Fran Melmed, Tanya Barham, and Greg Mathews will join us on the show to wrestle with wellness. I hope you can join us. | 9/23/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 65 - 'Tomorrow's HR Today' - Sep 17,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 65 - 'Tomorrow's HR Today' Thursday September 16, 2010 8PM EDT The future is a funny thing, no matter how much we seem to worry, prepare, and plan, it always kind of sneaks up on us, and before we know it, Bam!- it's smacking us upside the head. Perhaps it's because inside organizations and as leaders and HR professionals we get caught up in the day to day, burdened or even overwhelmed by outdated processes, tired information systems, and rigid, inflexible structures and hierarchies that may have served a noble purpose in the past, but now seem to keep us stuck and unable to do the important and interesting work we know we are capable of. We know we have to get smarter, more nimble, and better able to react to changing conditions in the external marketplace, as well as in the management of organizational information and unleashing of internal talent. It would be hard to argue those points, and while we know them to be true, the trick is how to go about making the changes needed, and as leaders and HR professionals how to raise our games to deliver on these objectives. Better technology, more business-savvy HR teams, and deeper understanding of how to tie employee efforts with personal and organizational goals - those are some of the keys to unlocking the future, and they will be what we will discuss this week on the show with our special guests Leighanne Levensaler, Vice President of HCM Strategy at Workday, and Jennifer Fitzpatrick, Director HR & Talent Management at Chiquita Brands International. Leighanne and Jennifer not only know the talk, but they know how to deliver, and they will share their insights and expertise to help you understand how to enable 'Tomorrow's HR Today'. HR Happy Hour - Episode 59 - 'About Your Performance Review' - Aug 20,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 59 - 'About Your Performance Review' Thursday, August 19, 2010 - 8PM EDT So let's talk about your performance this past year. I think you did do an overall excellent job, and you are a valuable resource to the team, but I am under pressure from HR not to give out too many 4's and 5's, so I have to give you a 3. Don't worry, you are still well thought of in the organization, and since we are looking to hold the line on annual salary increases, the ratings this year are not all that important. Any questions? Great, just sign and initial on the last page. How about those (choose from among) Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, Dodgers? Sound familiar? A little cynical? Only happens in 'bad' companies? Maybe. This week on the HR Happy Hour show we take on, and I mean take on, one of the sacred cows in HR and management practice. The annual performance review. Who among us actually looks forward to giving or receiving these? Why are they so dysfunctional, one-sided, and in many organizations, kind of meaningless? Our guest this week, Professor Samuel Culbert, author of 'Get Rid of the Performance Review!' argues that they need to be scrapped once and for all. That they do not serve any useful purpose, and actually degrade morale, performance, and results. You might agree, you might disagree, but you have to join us this week to really make up your mind. Yes, we want to talk to you this week 'About Your Performance Review'. We promise it won't be too painful. | 8/19/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 58 - 'Job Boards and the Future' - Aug 13,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 58 - 'Job Boards and the Future' Thursday August 12, 2010 8PM EDT So much has changed in the world of work and recruiting in the last five years. Global recession, rising unemployment in many countries, the maturation of social networks as a viable platform for job advertising and candidate sourcing, and oh yeah, an every three month or so prediction from someone that 'the big job boards are dead'. Despite all the turmoil and change, the big job boards are still around, and most of them are not simply sitting still, rather they have come to realize that innovation, adaptation, and flexibility are absolute requirements for survival in a world of reduced hiring, shrinking HR budgets, and the increasingly popular notion in many companies that big job boards are no longer needed, when direct access to candidates via social networks has never been easier. This week on the HR Happy Hour show we welcome Tom Silver, SVP of Dice.com, the leading job board for IT and other technical positions. You would be hard pressed to find an experienced IT worker that has not spent significant time in the last 10 years trolling Dice. Tom will share with us his insights on the world of the big job board today, what Dice.com sees as the major challenges in recruiting highly skilled workers today, and some of the new products and services Dice is rolling out in response to the dawn of social recruiting. An insider's view into the big job board scene - it should be an interesting show and I hope you can join us. | 8/12/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 57 - 'Exceeds Expectations with Sonar6' - Aug 06,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode - 'Exceeds Expectations with Sonar6' Thursday August 5, 2010 8PM EDT The words 'performance review' and 'suck' are so often in the same sentence that it really is not all that surprising to find that the vast majority of managers and employees look at the annual performance review with at best, trepidation, and at worst, dread. I mean, performance reviews suck, right? Well a few years ago a software company called Sonar6 was formed, and understanding the baseline assumption that performance reviews suck, set out to build a solution that would (gasp) actually make performance reviews and performance management, interesting, engaging, and assuredly not 'sucky'. Sonar6 makes some of the most innovative solutions for performance management and succession planning that you perhaps have never seen, (but you need to). They also have a fun and offbeat approach to marketing and communications that is a refreshing change of pace from the mainstream. I mean for a small company from New Zealand to make a name for itself in the crowded HCM space, you have to think differently, right? Joining us on the show will be Mike Carden, Co-founder of Sonar6 to share their unique story, their approach to performance management, and why more companies aren't as cool as they are. HR Happy Hour - Episode 54 - 'Enterprise 2.0 and HR' - Jul 16,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 54 - 'Enterprise 2.0 and HR' - Thursday July 15, 2010 8PM EDT Enterprise 2.0, defined as 'the use of emergent social software platforms by organizations in pursuit of their goals', has become an increasingly important concept for organizational leaders to understand and leverage. Enterprise 2.0, or E2.0 for short, is changing the way companies interact with customer and communities, how information is shared, created, and consumed, and in many progressive companies, is altering some of the fundamental processes and definitions of work. Certainly the proliferation of tools and platfroms on the social and participatory web, social networks, shared co-creation of knowledge repositories, and the realization of the power of networks have begun to impact the inner working environments of many organizations today. Success in E2.0 projects is much more about understanding and influencing people - their behavior, habits, and the collection of shared beliefs and practices that shape an organization's culture. Hey - those sound quite a bit like the topics that a great HR leader should not only understand, but should be able to help shape. In fact, many of the fundamental pillars for lasting success with E2.0 seem to be squarely in the HR pro's sights. So why does it seem like HR has been largely missing from the E2.0 conversations? How come HR seems to have ceded this ground to the IT folks? What can and should a savvy HR leader be doing not only to become more aware of the capability and potential of E2.0, but also to help lead organizational efforts. Joining us on the show will be Professor Andrew McAfee, the author of 'Enterprise 2.0 : New Collaborative Tools For Your Organization's Toughest Challenges'. Professor McAfee coined the term 'Enterprise 2.0', and is the most influential thought leader in the space. I hope you can join us for what should be a interesting and informative show. | 7/15/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 53 - 'Re-thinking Talent' - Jul 09,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 53 - 'Re-thinking Talent' Thursday July 8, 2010 - 8pm EDT The long lasting and lingering economic recession, shifting workplace demographics, access to information and talent growing exponentially, and likely the final days of the traditional 'employee/employer' social contract are all conspiring to make locating, acquiring, and retaining the talent that organizations still need ever more challenging. The recession in particular is forcing a new generation of workers to think differently about work and nature of their future relationship with an employer, or more likely the many employers they are going to have in their working careers. Workers and candidates have been forced to adapt, but what about organizations? Are the organizations that need to have access to and support from ever more capable collections of talented staff doing enough to adapt themselves to this new environment? What approaches and strategies for talent acquisition make the most sense in a world where compensation, benefits, and long-term security can no longer be promised? Does traditional internal career pathing even make an impact on the modern employee that fully expects a short tenure at an organization? What organizations are today are changing and morphing the fastest and best to remain competitive and successful in their talent acquisition efforts? Joining us to talk about these issues will be Susan Burns from Talent Synchronicity and Jennifer McClure from Unbridled Talent (and hopefully you too). | 7/8/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HR Happy Hour - Episode 52 - 'I Fought the Law' - Jul 02,2010 | HR Happy Hour - Episode 52 - 'I Fought the Law' Thursday, July 1, 2010 - 8PM EDT So now everyone, your dad, your kids, your grandma, and your employees are happily tweeting, friending, liking, and sharing information on public social networks like Facebook and Twitter. In the corporate world, reactions to this phenomenon have varied from outright bans on one extreme, to fundamental embrace of the tools on the other extreme. And no matter what position your organization stakes out along the continuum, risks, opportunities, and choices abound. How much transparency and openness is too much? What kinds of risks are there for organizations in policy making and in enforcement? Are there particular elements of employment law and organizational exposure that need to be considered? It is naive to propose outright bans on these tools, as it is equally naive to promote unfettered and unmonitored access and usage in the workplace. This week we will be joined by Eric Meyer, Paul Smith, and Joan Ginsberg, all HR and/or legal experts, to talk about these and other issues. Please join us! Is it just for the pay check, to get the bills paid and keep the lights on? Or is there more to it, like a search for meaning, community, or engagement in a cause that is important or meaningful? In their new book 'The Why of Work', Dave Ulrich and Wendy Ulrich describe that through our work we seek a sense of purpose and meaning, and that by tapping into that meaning we can enjoy more successful and positive workplaces, more engaged workforces, and more successful organizations. How can leaders strive to create more abundant organizations, that are better connected to the needs of customers, employees, shareholders, and communities while providing employees more opportunity to find their true motivation and get more connected to the work, to each other, and to the organization. Indie culture has its roots in the Beat poets of the 50s and stretches to the present day, as thousands of creators make, build, and showcase their ideas and themselves on and offline, and in a scores of constantly changing ways. Why is indie culture, and the indie ethos so enduring and what does it tell us about the modern workplace and the new skills needed to succeed in a global, fast-moving, and constantly changing business world? How does one stay indie once you start climbing up the corporate ladder? Or are big corporate interests always going to see indie creations and ideas as something to 'leverage' and use up? Money, perks, benefits, stock options, you know the drill. Organizations every day have to find the right balance in their compensation strategy.
