A detailed look at how to prevent
These podcasts offer a detailed look at how to confront the various threats facing humanity that threaten to inflict upon it humanitarian catastrophes unparalleled in all of human history. All indications are that we beat the odds when we survived the Cold War. Numerous close calls owing to political tension and human error nearly resulted in a nuclear exchange that would have caused the murder of billions of human beings. As recently as 1995, a norwegian weather experiment, mistook by the Russians for a Moscow bound missile, came within 10 seconds of inciting such an exchange before it veered off course. Several other earlier incidents as severe occured. Dr. Helen Caldicott is a veteran anti-nuclear activist who rejected societal complancy in the face of a nuclear standoff that plausibly threatened to kill billions of people. Government records indicate that the anti-nuclear movement succeeded in moderating the policies of both sides, and thereby the movement was successful in substantially reducing the liklihood of an exchange and in facilitating the way for the negotiations that ended the Cold War. Today, the nuclear threat is lessened by still significant. Both sides have thousands of nukes on hair trigger alert aimed at eachother, and the early detection systems, as always, are not fool proof. However, now new dangers are also present: global warming chief among them threatens to flood Bangledesh, a country of a 162 million people. The neo-conservatives of the US and certain other countries incite new wars, according to the only statistical studies done on the matter, the war in Iraq killed as many as 1.4 million people and as few as 500,000. Dr. Caldicott has dedicated her life to saving humanity from itself by educating it about the threats it foolishly and complacently ignores and organizing likeminded folk into a politically significant force. She continues to do this through means such as this podcast. She feels an urgency to preserve the future and to judge it candidly. Dangerously few have this level of courage, love, and dedication for the mother of all life, the Earth.
Required Listening
Dr. Caldicott should be a Nobel Laureate for all she has done to help this planet and save humanity from itself. Her program is very insightful and educational. Her passion is combined with the scientific evidence offered by herself and her guests. Very well done!!
