How To Write, Direct, & Produce Urban Theatre With Je'Caryous Johnson - Oct 05,2010 | Je'Caryous Johnson will discuss how to write, direct and produce urban theatre. He is currently touring his hit stage play, "Cheaper to Keeper Her," starring Vivica Fox and Brian McKnight.. With over 14 years of experience in the performing arts, Johnson has trained with such theater masters as Edward Albee, Jose Quintero, and Sir Peter Hall. The Rewrite Mentor, Paul Chitlik, on "Inside Urban Hollywood" (Sept. 20th) - Sep 21,2010 | Clutter is one of the single biggest reasons projects are so hard to get made in Hollywood. Every night, studio executives drag home a pile of scripts, 99% of which will end up in the reject bin. The way you decrease your script's chances of suffering the same fate is by doing your due diligence and not sending it out until it's at its absolute best. Unfortunately, too many writers, directors, and producers aren't skilled enough to know when that is. On Monday, September 20th, Paul Chitlik, The Rewrite Mentor, and author of "Rewrite" will appear on Inside Urban Hollywood to discuss how to know when your script is ready. Paul Chitlik has written for all the major networks and studios. He was story editor for "The New Twilight Zone," and staff writer for Showtime's "Brothers." He has written features for Rysher Entertainment, NuImage, Promark, and others. He received a WGA award nomination for his work on "The Twilight Zone," a GLAAD Media Award nomination, and won a Genesis Award for a Showtime movie. He has taught screenwriting at UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, and ESCAC, the film school of the University of Barcelona. He began teaching advanced residential workshops in 2008, in Cortona, Italy, and will lead workshops in Telluride, Colorado, and Spain in 2010. TV Writer-Producer-Director Kellie R. Griffin on "Inside Urban Hollywood," Mon. April 5, 6pm PST/9pm - Apr 06,2010 | Writer-producer-director Kellie R . Griffin will discuss writing and producing for television and cable on the April 5th edition of "Inside Urban Hollywood." Kellie R. Griffin started her Hollywood career as a receptionist on the hit sitcom, "The Parkers" where Griffin worked her way up to become a Writers’ Assistant. During the show’s fifth and final season, Griffin wrote one of the show’s three-part episodes for the series finale, which allowed her membership into the WGA. Her pivotal career break came from a referral by Ralph Farquhar (“Moesha") to write a spec script for Tyler Perry and Reuben Cannon (“Woman Thou Art Loosed”) who were producing a new TV sitcom. Impressed by Griffin’s script, the duo offered her the position of Associate Producer and Head Writer for the runaway TBS hit “House of Payne,” where she personally hand-picked her own writing team of 8-11 writers and managed them as they wrote a mind-blowing 100+ episodes in less than a year! The show debuted as the highest rated comedy series in cable television history and the #1 TV show in African-American households. In 2008 and 2009, the show won three and four NAACP Image Awards, including Best TV Comedy Series both years. Despite the show’s success, it was not covered by the WGA. After fighting a good fight, Griffin and her staff were successful with getting Tyler Perry to join the WGA and now the current writing staff receives the benefits they deserve, one of Griffin’s proudest accomplishments. Currently, Griffin lives in Los Angeles and is in the process of creating a television drama based on her real life experiences as the director of a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C. and she’s co-writing her first action feature film. | 4/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Producer & distribution specialist Jerome Courshon on "Inside Urban Hollywood" - Mar 16,2010 | Producer & distribution specialist Jerome Courshon will talk about concrete, specific and proven strategies to achieve distribution for your film. Jerome's first movie was the critically acclaimed indie God, Sex & Apple Pie, released by Warner Bros. After acquiring enormous experience & knowledge from playing "the game" of getting distribution for his own movie, he began assisting his colleagues on their movies -- with some of them achieving distribution in as little as 4 months by applying his information. The simple truth is this: While the so-called 3rd battle of moviemaking is getting distribution -- generally considered the hardest battle to wage -- it is not as difficult when you really know what to do. After the persistent urging of colleagues to share this closely-held industry knowledge with other producers & directors, "THE SECRETS TO DISTRIBUTION: Get Your Movie Distributed Now!" was born. Jerome initially began presenting a very short version of this class with the Learning Annex in Los Angeles, October 2006. Three months later, by January 2007, it had become a comprehensive 1-Day event to cover all the necessary material to truly achieve distribution. In 2009, it expanded once more to a 2-Day event, to cover traditional distribution and DIY in even further depth, as well as the emerging & developing non-traditional options for filmmakers. Jerome has written primers and articles on distribution for MovieMaker Magazine, Indie Slate Magazine, Film Festival Today and other film publications. You can view some of his latest articles here. On the creative front, Jerome recently produced a pilot for a television series and is currently in development on his next movie. | 3/15/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Guests Michael Ajakwe & Reggie Gaskins talk the Digital Production Revolution - Mar 02,2010 | The new frontier in filmmaking is creating and distribution digital content for and on the web. The opportunities to monetize online video are rapidly increasing. You need not find anymore a distribution house to make your video- or filmmaking passion pay back for your hard work. On the Monday, March 1st edition of "Inside Urban Hollywood," guests creator-writer-director-producer Michael Ajakwe Jr. and actor-writer-director-producer Reggie Gaskins talked about creating and distributing content on the web. Ajakwetv.com came to be due to the lack of diversity in original programming on web channels currently servicing the Internet. Instead of boycotting these channels or singing "We Shall Overcome" for what is likely an unintentional oversight, Michael Ajakwe Jr. decided to simply start his own web channel showcasing his original series and the original series of other Creators of Color. Encouraged by new challenges and motivated by limitless worldwide distribution, Gaskins has ventured into cyberspace with the release of his first weekly dramatic webisodic series The Lawyer, the Thug and the Princess. “I love creating new and exciting stories for audiences as I don't see enough new and original content on TV," comments Gaskins. " The first season of "The Lawyer, the Thug and the Princess" consists of 15 episodes and is available at www.reggiegaskinstv.com. | 3/1/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
