Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under This is the first episode to feature John Mahon as Kate's dad Trevor. He appears later in the season in "The Prodigal" (S1E15). So let’s get to the disussion Rate the episode Starts at about a 6 bonus points actually make it fall even farther down to a 5 which probably makes this episode the lowest ranking so far even though I didn’t intend for that to happen. IA 0105 – Room With A View | Case Summary 0105, here is the Investigating Angel podcast for the Angel series - Season 1 Episode 5 "Room with a View". Join me and my co-host Angie as we take a look that the beginnings of a new family being formed here in Los Angeles. Don't forget to join the new Facebook Group 'Hellmouth Empire' which will be replacing the old Facebook pages for both podcasts. IA 0105 “Room With A View” - Angel Case File # 0105 its time to start investigating Angel, Season 1 Episode 5 titled “Room With A View” Case Summary Everybody’s got problems. Doyle has a bounty hunter out to get him and more than just a bounty. Cordelia is in search of a new apartment and is currently homeless and living in Angel’s place. Angel’s problem is Cordelia. So Doyle agrees to help Angel by helping Cordelia find an apartment. Angel agrees to help Doyle with the bounty hunter if he agrees to help Cordelia. Cordelia agrees to help no one. Doyle does manage to find Cordelia a great apartment there is just one tiny flaw, a wall that Cordelia needs to remove. Oh that and it’s haunted. Initially, Cordelia decides that a tough girl from Sunnydale can handle a measly little ghost but this ghost manages to trick, manipulate, and wear Cordy down. This ghost makes one atal mistake however, in the end when the spells aren’t working and Doyle and Angel are busy dealing with a bounty hunter… the ghost calls Cordy a bitch. Cordy responds – that’s right, I’m not a sniveling little cry-buffy. Lady the bitch is back. The true reason for the haunting is revealed, the ghost killed her son in that apartment and died from a heart attack. Once the ghost of her son is released, it attacks and removes her. Then however, phantom dennis remains in the apartment to watch after Cordy and be the silent roommate. Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under Steve Paymer (who is said to live in Cordelia's apartment building) in actuality does live in the same apartment building as episode writer Jane Espenson. On the DVD commentary, Jane Espenson takes credit for creating phantom Dennis. She also mentions that whenever a character is re-introduced, the original writer gets a small residual payment. However, since we never actually "see" phantom Dennis in any later episodes (only special effects), Jane has not received any residual payments. Aura is the same Aura who found an "extreme dead guy" in her locker in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Welcome to the Hellmouth". Angel is listening to Beethoven's "Ode To Joy" in his apartment when Cordelia arrives, which is also the song he was whistling when he visited the hospital in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Killed by Death". Episode Discussion Rate the episode Bonus Point Phantom Dennis Bonus Point Doyle is a slightly more interesting character in this episode. Bonus Point Cordelia’s reaction to being called a bitch. Bonus point for every scene in which Angel and Cordelia are roommates. This episode starts at a 7 for me ends at a 11 Reminders New Hellmouth Empire Group on Facebook is taking the place of the two separate podcast facebook pages. IA 0104 – I Fall To Pieces | Here is the Investigating Angel podcast for the Angel series, Season 1 Episode 4 - I Fall To Pieces. This podcast is a week behind schedule because it took me a little extra time to find something nice to say about this episode. It's going to hurt a little bit but here is the podcast... IA 0104 “I Fall to Pieces” - Angel Case File # 0104 its time to start investigating Angel, Season 1 Episode 4 titled “I Fall to Pieces” Case Summary Cordelia stresses to Angel that they need to start making money before too long because coffee doesn’t grow on trees. Well, actually it does, but money doesn’t and money buys coffee so… you get the picture. Doyle’s vision points Angel to Melissa who is in some kind of trouble. Turns out that some kind of trouble is that she is being stalked by a Dr. who has delusions of a deep meaningful relationship between the two of them. But this is no ordinary Dr. The reason he can so effectively stalk Melissa is because he can separate his body parts and send them off to do his bidding, then reattaches them when they are done. Angel and the group find out how he has managed to be such an effective stalker but things are escalating and now it looks like he is out to hurt Melissa. Hijinks ensue, Angel kills all the pieces of the Dr. and Melissa regains control of her life, oh and she pays her bill. Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under The courtyard of Melissa's apartment building will later be used for the courtyard of the Hyperion Hotel starting with Season 2. In this episode, Christopher Hart plays the disembodied hand. It's basically his way of life - he also played the role of "Thing" in The Addams Family movies and the evil hand in the movie Idle Hands. This episode was originally a BtVS script, but the producers decided it was more fitting to Angel's style. The title "I Fall To Pieces" was a hit song by Patsy Cline in 1962(In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Prophecy Girl", Xander listened to this song in his room after Buffy refused to go to a dance with him). Andy Umberger, who played Ronald, is one of the few actors who Joss Whedon refers to as "hat trick" actors (meaning that they've appeared on all three of his TV series). Mr. Umberger also played the demon D'Hoffryn in four episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the captain of the Dortmunder in the pilot episode of Firefly. So let’s get to the disussion Why do the eyes float? Angel’s exposition is very forced Kate shows up in this episode, I almost kind of like her as a straight cop character. Cordelia and the charging customers for their help Ethical Necessary Angel get’s darted and drugs knock him out, why? Stalking as a topic, it’s about fear and control The guy has issues and tries to exert himself over women The capabilities, the potential of the human mind is explored a little bit. Didn’t like it. Sunnydale has the hellmouth which is their get out of jail free, this was a pit of a stretch. The cop who comes into her apartment was a horrible bit of acting. Ronald was creepy Talk about all the things Ronald was and Ronald did The whole shooting out body parts as a method of attack was horrible. Melissa – does she represent anything specific? Seems like a very shallow character to me. Didn’t like this episode. Too much cheese and forced exposition, the weakest episode of the series so far by a long shot. It felt like the writers had the idea of what they wanted to do but had no idea how to make it all tie together and just kind of forced it. Rate the episode Episode starts at a 2, I would be tempted to give it a 0 but there were a few scenes that were tolerable. Bonus point… I am trying to think of something that merits a bonus point and I can’t think of anything. I could take tons of points away but that would mean a big negative score. I don’t want to give it a negative score, | 5/6/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Tim Minear Interview | A huge, giant, obscene amount of thanks goes out to Tim Minear for agreeing to do an interview with the Investigating Angel podcast. This interview will give you a glance into the inner workings of the writing and directing of some of your favorite Whedon shoes. Mr. Minear gives candid, honest answers to some tough questions. It is a captivating interview that really highlights the talent and passion that Mr. Minear puts into all of his work. Again I can't thank him enough for being willing to share his thoughts and insights about the Angel series and his other works. I would be remiss if I didn't thank Angie from the Hellmouth Empire crew who coordinated and conducted the interview. Angie did a fantastic job (as usual). | 4/13/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

IA 0103 – In The Dark | Here is the Investigating Angel podcast for the Angel series, Season 1 Episode 3 - In the Dark. Here is a reminder that this podcast will make more sense after you have listened to the Hellmouth Podcast 0403 The Harsh Light of Day! IA 0103 “In The Dark” - Angel Case File # 0103 its time to start investigating Angel, Season 1 Episode 3 titled “In The Dark” Case Summary Oz arrives in Sunnydale with the Gem of Amara for Angel. Spike arrives as well and is willing to do anything to get it back. Spike captures Angel and tortures him to reveal the location of the ring. Cordelia and Doyle desperately search to find it and bring it to Spike Angel has a few revealing moments while being tortured. The creepy guy gets the ring but Oz, Cordelia and Doyle manage to save Angel. His first priority is finding the creepy guy. He ventures out into the daylight to find him, safely tucked in Oz’s van. He finds the creepy guy, kills him and spends one day with the gem of amara a vampire in the sun. Strangest thing, he doesn’t sparkle. Spike didn’t get away with his ring but he did escape with his life. We have not heard the last from Spike, he will soon be back in Sunnydale. Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under The opening scene where Rachel is cowering to Lenny is shown in the opening credits of each episode. This episode is the second part of the story begun in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "The Harsh Light of Day" (4x03). The two episodes were originally aired back-to-back. Despite editing more than five minutes worth of footage,'In The Dark' still roused the anger of the ITC in the U.K. With viewers complaining about the Violence and adult tone. It wasn't long before the show was switched to a much more suitable, Later, time slot than the original time of 6pm. So let’s get to the disussion Episode Tie In If you didn’t listen to the Hellmouth Podcast, first of all shame on you. Let’s kind of catch you up on what happened. Spike went back to sunnydale looking for the gem of amara which grants a vampire invulnerability. Basically anything that normally kills a vampire doesn’t kill them anymore. So Buffy gets the ring from spike and sends it to LA with Oz and that is were this episode picks up. How does Angel view the gem of Amara vs. Spike? Oz arrives in LA Vampire/Torture Expert/ P*******e Angel and Cordelia really fear Spike Spike captures Angel and tortures him to get ring Great scene when spike first arrives and narrates over Angel talking to the girl Angel gets his moment in the sun Doyle – doyle doesn’t understand why Angel won’t use the ring If there is no threat then Angel might loose some of the meaning behind why he fights and what he is fighting for. Would the gem of amara had any effect on Buffy? Was Angel truly prepared to die to protect the ring? It does not come across heavy handed but one of the key elements of this series is explored – forgiveness With gem series becomes boring if angel can’t die This torture guy is a bit reminiscent of Angel himself, Angelus was a master torturer in his own rite. Would Buffy have given Angel the ring if she knew he would destroy it? Spike’s development through the series so far… Rate the episode Bonus point for Angel as a whole, really handeled this episode well a great performance. Bonus point for first cross over Bonus point for Spike and Angel, all of those scenes are fun. That is going to wrap things up for Investigating Angel, thanks for tuning in, I will see all of you at the Hellmouth Podcast next week for the episode “Fear, Itself” or back here at Investigating Angel for “I Fall to Pieces” the week after. IA 0102 – Lonely Hearts | Here is the Investigating Angel podcast for the Angel series, Season 1 Episode 2 - Lonely Hearts. It seems that whenever I am doing the podcast for an episode that I was not a big fan of then the podcast goes in some kind of weird direction. This podcast is no exception. Hopefully you will find it somewhat entertaining. IA 0102 “Lonely Hearts” - Angel Case File # 0102 its time to start investigating Angel, Season 1 Episode 2 titled “Lonely Hearts” Case Summary Doyle gets a vision that someone in a bar is going to be hurt. Angel and the crew go to the bar and while Cordelia hands out their new business cards, Angel tries to find someone who needs to be saved. They don’t find the victim in time. It turns out there is a burrowing demon trolling through the singles scene looking for a host that the demon is compatible with. If the two aren’t compatible, the demon finds another host and kills the current one. Angel meets Kate a single girl living in LA. The two of them seem to have a bit of awkward chemistry but a lot of this goes kapooey when we find out that Kate is a cop and she finds out that Angel has a tendency to show up around dead bodies. Angel continues looking for the demon to try and stop it before it kills again. When he finally catches up to the demon it is after Kate. There is a big fight, hijinks ensue but Kate and Angel make it out alive and the demon does not. Kate confesses that she illegally searched Angel’s place because she wants to have a fresh start with him. Angel doesn’t go for the relationship, but he does tell Kate that if she ever needs help he will be around. Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under Originally, David Fury had written a darker script called "Corrupt." In that script, Kate was a prostitute, and Angel licked blood off of a murder victim. Copies of the script are floating around on-line. The phone number on Angel's business cards is; 213-555-0162. The "555" exchange is commonly used in entertainment because it is reserved for information services. This means that no active number will use the exchange. The "213" area code identifies the location as Los Angeles David Boreanaz does the "previously on Angel" voiceover for the first time on the series. Tracy Stone, who played the Pretty Girl (Marcie), also played on Malibu Shores with Charisma Carpenter in the episode "The Fall" in 1996 Doyle explains that the invitation rule for vampires only stays in effect while the owner of the home is alive So let’s get to the disussion Was not looking forward to this podcast. This episode is a little bit disappointing for me and I felt like this was not the strongest follow up to the City Of episode. But when I sat down to prepare for the podcast, I asked myself “Bryan what are the writers trying to say? What are they trying to get across or explore in this episode? Lets talk about Kate. We get introduced to a new character in Kate. Even on first viewing it is obvious that the original intention was to have Kate be a recurring character. I think they probably even wanted Kate to help create sexual tension between her and Angel. Cordelia and Doyle No Wolfram and Heart in this episode This episode is about loneliness and that search for the ‘special someone’ I am going to use a very immature and cheesy metaphor in this episode but it was the only way that I could think of to try and tie a lot of this stuff together so here it goes. So why is dating like a twisted game of go fish you ask? Well let me break it down for you. Lets talk about where people go to meet people. In this episode we see them go to a bar or a club and I think that is kind of representative of all the various places you ‘could’ go to meet people. Work, school, club/bar, church, meet someone through a friend A lot of these are even mentioned in the episode. Is it any wonder that people hate dating, hate going through that pain and having to start over. | 3/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

IA 0000 – IntroCast | Here is the IntroCast for the new Investigating Angel podcast. The Investigating Angel podcast is an episode by episode review of the themes, story arcs and character development of the Angel series written by Joss Whedon. The goal of the podcast is to take a show that you have seen many times and make you love it and think about it in a completely different way! Here are the important links for this episode: Facebook Page Twitter Hellmouth Podcast Hellmouth Empire Forums IA IntroCast – Joss Whedon’s Angel Series Case File number 0000 He lurks, he mopes and he broods like no human ever could. He is Angel, the vampire with a soul. He left Sunnydale and the love of his immortal life to come to Los Angeles and find his purpose in the world. What he found was far more than he ever anticipated and so where one story ends, this one begins. Theme music? Hello, my name is Bryan and I wanted to introduce the Investigating Angel podcast. This is a podcast for all you Whedon fans out there who love the Angel series and since the show went off the air have been looking for a place where you can interact with myself a community of fans who love the show as much as you do. So who am I? Well you may know me from the Hellmouth Podcast. In 2009 I launched the Hellmouth Podcast to chronicle the adventures of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series one episode at a time. The Hellmouth Podcast is approaching the end of season 3 and so it made sense that it was time to continue both Angel and Buffy’s story beyond season 3. I am a big fan of all of Joss Whedon’s shows and I try to bring my love and enthusiasm of the shows into each and every podcast so I am very excited to be starting investigating angel very soon. Here’s what you can expect from the new podcast. Case Summary – A the beginning of each podcast I will summarize the events of the episode in 2-3 minutes just to refresh everyone on the events of that episode so that we are all on the same page, but that is the extent of the hard core recap. From there it is going to be a discussion of the themes, story arcs, character developments and any and everything that randomly pops into my head while watching the episode. The goal of the podcast is to give you a new perspective on the show, make you watch it and love it in ways that you had never thought of before. We will get down and dirty and if I like something I will tell you, if I don’t like something trust me I will tell you. If you don’t believe me, ask one of the Hellmouth Podcast listeners about the Ted Debacle earlier this year. I also will have co-hosts from time to time. Podcast listeners are welcome to go to the forums and signup for an episode that you love and would like to co-host and let everyone know what you thought about the episode. I will rate each episode so you can get a feeling for where I think it stands in relation to the rest of the episodes in the season or series and then it’s a free for all from there. Sometimes it will be listener emails and voicemails. Sometimes it will be me updating you on things happening in the Investigating Angel community. That community is something that I wanted to talk about as well. As I stated earlier, I started podcast last year (2009) for those of you listening ‘from the future’ and the Hellmouth Podcast has built itself a nice little community we like to call the Hellmouth Empire. The Hellmouth Empire Forums, the Facebook Page, Twitter, email, voicemail and the monthly newsletter are some of the different ways that I interact with the Hellmouth Empire and the Hellmouth Empire interacts with each other. So hopefully I will be bringing a lot of them with me to this new podcast so is you are listening to this intro-cast just know that we are coming and we are anxious to meet you and welcome you with open arms to our family.
