ExplicitJapantics Live Episode #13: The Incredible CIRs Episode | In this episode, we have two very special guests. They are Tokushima Prefecture's CIRs. Coordinator for International Relations (or CIR) is another position within the JET program that is very different from the Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) position. Today, our guests introduce themselves and speak about becoming a CIR. (3:30) Our two guests give us their Jikoshokais. (8:25) One of our CIRs talks about his experience as a German, and the relevance of Japan/ the JET program there. He talks about how many German participants there are in the JET program & the status of Japanese studies in his home country. (11:28) Our American CIR talks a bit about her application and interview process. She mentions that, in general, the application process is the same for both CIRs and ALTs, but the interview goes a bit different. Then our German CIR jumps in and talks a bit about his experience. (18:00) Next, we have the CIRs speak some about their daily routines and responsibilities. Their responsibilities are in many ways the same, but they also have some very unique duties. (28:00) Our CIRs are also PAs. What's a PA???? and what the fudge do they do? Our CIRs conclude with their overall thoughts on the process and their early assessment of their new positions. Special thanks to Sarah and Kim for being on the show! As always thanks for listening, and if you have questions send them to christownsend@japantics.com | 10/4/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Sorry for the long break, we're gonna try to get back to regularly posting episodes. (2:25) B & myself start off complaining about the Japanese summer. Then we talk a bit about what we do doing these wonderful summers at work. (6:10) Next, we talk a bit about social activities that Japanese students engage in. My school bunkasai (culture festival) is coming up and we compare these types of school events to American school events. We delve into our typical school schedules and how ALTs need to remain flexible and expect sudden changes. (11:40) I had the opportunity to climb the glorious Mt. ExplicitJapantics Live Episode #9: 2 Dudes & a Japanese Lady | Konnichiwa ladies & fellas. CALL THIS NUMBER & LEAVE US A VOICEMAIL 1-214-613-8020 (3:56) In this episode of Japantics Live, B & Chris tackle an epic piece of hate mail. One individual decided that Japantics Live was a terrible production and that the two of us had no right to speak about Japan. We dissect this email and reply to each of the (ridiculous) criticisms. Enjoy! (18:24) Next, we answer a very kind listener who simply wants some recommendations about Japan-related media/material. We talk movies, manga, and books that all influenced our interest in Japan. (25:42) Finally, a listener from Utah asks about culture shock. He wants to know specifics about what culture shock we experienced when we made our moves to Japan. He also asks about the possibility of experiencing reverse culture shock when returning to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!! YEA! (34:30) Next we introduce a special segment featuring a wonderful special guest. Joining us for this segment is Satoe, a lovely, kind, and hilarious Japanese lady (B's wife). She tackles some of the questions we previously covered specifically about dating between Japanese people and foreigners, what it's like being married to an American, and why many Japanese people are interested in English. Please remember to call this number and ask us a question or leave a comment 1-214-613-8020. ExplicitJapantics Live Episode #8: Branchin' Out | B & I kick this week's episode off talking a bit about what has been happening in our lives. We mention some of the strange things that may happen in a Japanese school, the school field trips that students take each year, and a hot new Japantics Live feature. You can now call and leave your questions via an automated voicemail. Call 1-214-613-8020 (free for residents in the USA, not sure for you other guys) and leave us a voicemail. (10:48) First we have a pretty simple question from a listener that will be visiting the Kansai area here in Japan. He simple wants to know where he should visit and what's fun to do in the area. We cover a few of the touristy must-sees, shopping, partying, and authentic Japan. Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Nara are all places we touch a bit on. (22:05) Next, we have an email from a newly accepted JET participant preparing for his eventual journey to Japan. He has a few of the typical questions that can come up when attempting to ready oneself for living in a new country. He asks about omiyage (the giving of small souvenirs to co-workers), how much money to bring, what furnishing we had to purchase, the weather situation, and hobbies we were able to bring/continue here in Japan. (34:17) Finally, we are asked whether or not we are into Japanese anime. We both talk about our personal history with anime. B exposes his involvement in the art of anime fan subbing. This listener also talks a bit about being personal attacked for her love of anime. Should she give it up? The answer to these questions and more on another epic episode of Japantics Live. Send your questions/comments christownsend@japantics.com or test out the new voicemail feature by calling 1-214-613-8020 and leaving your questions/thoughts. ExplicitJapantics Live Episode #7: Back At It | Back from our respective breaks, Balazs & I talk a little bit about our trips over the Japanese Golden Week holidays. Then we get right into your listener questions. (We had quite a few stacked up in waiting) (8:56) Our first question asks how easy it is to make friends in Japan, particularly for someone that considers themselves shy or introverted. We talk a little bit about our experiences making friends here and about the JET/foreigner communities. (12:23) Next, we jump into ways to motivate our students to learn/participate in our various English lessons. We've both found that getting students motivated can often be challenging and may depend on the age range you happen to be teaching. What about prize incentives? Are they appropriate for use in the classroom? (19:43) B & I continue with our thoughts on the general age of JET participants/assistant language teachers(ALTs) here in Japan. Is 27 years old really considered "old"? AGEISM!? (23:44) We received a slew of interesting questions from one listener. Favorite drink discovered here in Japan? Been to a Sumo match or baseball game? Oddities on the JR rail? Escalator etiquette? (37:19) Finally, we tackle a question submitted by a young listener and her very specific dilemma. Should she renounce her Japanese citizenship to participate in the JET program? Would it be worth it? That and much more in yet another episode. Remember to send your questions to christownsend@japantics.com. All day, everyday. いちにちじゅうまいにち。 | 5/20/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitJapantics Live Episode #6: Should You Stay or Should You Go? | Hey everybody!! I'm back from the good ol' U.S. of A. and ready rock some Japantics LIVE. B and I are back (in a previously recorded episode) chattin' it up and answering your listener questions. In this episode, we address a few very difficult to answer questions that may not have definitive solutions. But hopefully we can help a little bit with our advice and suggestions. The first question asks about finding fellow foreign friends in the Japanese countryside. This listener really wanted to know how likely it would be that he could participate in a fluid/fluent English conversation with a fellow native speaker. Our second question is a particularly difficult one. A listener recently found out he has been accepted on the JET program! Hurray! But.... he also landed a pretty epic job at home that he seems to enjoy. What should he do? The third and final question is all about Mary Jane. How is marijuana accepted in the land of Japan? How much trouble will you be in if you're caught with it? We answer these questions and much more in this new episode! Thanks for listening everybody and please, please remember to send all of your questions and comments to christownsend@japantics.com | 5/13/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitJapantics Live Episode #4: GETCHA OWN TEA MR. PRINCIPAL | This episode covers our weekly activities living here in Japan & once again we answer a few of your listener questions. First, we discuss what was the biggest thing that we had to get used to (in a negative way) when adjusting to life here in Japan. The group mentality of Japan was something very different from our American, individualistic culture. We continue with what we miss from America that just isn't as available here in Japan, and follow with what we like here in Japan that isn't so great in America. Next, we tackle a question about what Japan-specific activities we have had the chance to participate in. On the flip side, we discuss activities we loved in America that we can't do here in Japan. Finally, we get an email asking about the other English teaching options here in Japan (other than the JET program). There are several options regarding teaching English throughout all of Japan.
