The good people at Cooperative Press have found a local printer who can bring you our new book still printed in the USA! Mwah! Have I told you how much I love indie publishers? And speaking of Cooperative Press! Two new goodies for you! First, the CP Sock & Mitt Club. Second, the CP Mag! Both of which yours truly will be working on! Yay! What is CP saying about the Magazine? Let me share what CP says: Our intentions are as follows: as with all things CP, we compensate our contributors fairly, work with indie designers and dyers, and generally keep great content coming at you; we will be publishing 3x per year (though we’re doing a special “issue zero” in time for TNNA, the big pro fiber arts tradeshow in June) via our own app. This app will eventually also offer other Cooperative Press content, too. Ebooks, special issues, etc.; by popular demand and in response to some early feedback, we’ll do a PDF version of the magazine, which will be available via our website and Ravelry. It won’t have the video/audio/interactive functionality of the main version, but for readers who aren’t interested in reading via app, it’ll offer access to most of the content; each year, we’ll collect the magazine content into a book book -- think the way Food&Wine or Martha Stewart republishes their "best-of" each year. Hopefully having multiple access points for the content will make everyone happy. And by having several digital options, it makes it possible to buy it from anywhere (even Australia and the UK!), because as we’ve learned selling books, not everyone feels like paying the (frankly absurd) postage rates these days. It makes me ill to have to charge half again the cost of a print book just to ship it to Europe, and from a purely capitalistic perspective, I’d rather you put that $12 towards another one of our ebooks! :) And, more happiness—the husband gets more good press for his book, too! Yay books! Yay literate people! * * * And my new pattern (that I'm so proud of!): Hunger Games-inspired Life and Death socks—designed for those of us who tend to give their socks a beating (more details on knitting blog). * * * Ehren, I think you'll agree, rocks the Gulliver text. grab the code (working on the JtB version...) (Sorry, no idea how to pronounce that one) On the plus side, they do appear to be easy enough to deal with-all you have to do is force the obour into a bottle using an Eikon, stopper it up, affix the Eikon to the bottle, and then chuck the whole enchilada into a fire. Karen Wessel Just remembered what I've been meaning to mention - not sure if you don't know already but - the "Leiterwagen" mentioned in Dracula? the literal translation is Ladder (=Leiter) cart/wagon (=wagen). So called because the sides of it look like ladders. Clean224: Chapter 2—Dracula | Chapter 2 of Dracula! Whoot! (Scroll to the bottom of the page for a player or grab the show on iTunes or via this feed.) The husband’s new novel and his lovely review from Kathleen: Andrew Ordover's novel is an entertaining introduction to a fresh new detective. Jordan Greenblatt, a Long Island transplant to Atlanta, has a smart and funny Southern wife, a group of jazz musicians for whom he plays bass, and, oh yeah, a one-man PI firm specializing in routine investigations: philanderers, insurance cheats, and other run-of-the mill cases. He also has some personal baggage that will soon be unpacked. Although he enjoys his self-described "slacker lifestyle," he is a bit bored and when a New York businessman asks him to investigate the three-year old hit and run death of his daughter, a woman whom Jordan knew as a teenager, he takes the case. Jordan's main gift as an investigator seems to be his impulsivity, and with his initial lack of either foresight or self-defense skills he manages to ruffle a lot of local feathers in what eventually becomes a very personal quest for justice. Ordover's gifts as a writer include a terrific ear for dialog, excellent pacing, and a sense of humor that is neither cynical nor snarky. He's given us an intriguing supporting cast as well, and I like his taste in classic jazz. After reading the last page I was delighted to see a teaser for a second book in the series. Although fans of feline detectives may be disappointed, I was charmed that the only four-legged cat in the book is Jordan and Susannah's pet cat, Eliot, who has a walk-on part in one scene and who appears to have absolutely no super-spidey-powers of detection. New Slains Castle may have inspired Stoker--New Slains Castle is a ruined castle near Cruden Bay in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, overlooking the North Sea. This is what an Aquiline (roman) nose looks like: Slovak costumes referred to in the story: and another page with traditional Slovak dress on it. Here's a caleche A Note From: Irish Clover Some 411 on Bram: First, he worked in the tax department at Dublin Castle, a government building, in his early working life. (The people of Dublin say he was a bloodsucker before writing about a bloodsucker.) Also, Stoker spent his summers around Killarney as a small boy. If one were to go on the Ghost Tour of Killarney, she would hear of the story of a man who lived in the ruins of Muckross Abbey. The man would be a part of living society during the day, but at night, he would retire to the ruins. The towns people would hear horrible shrieks and tortuous sounds from the Abbey that would last until almost dawn. When the sun was close to rising, the man would lie down in an empty coffin and sleep for a few hours. Lore has it that Stoker heard the stories about the man when he visited Killarney. Also, the Gaelic word drochfhuil (pronounced drak-ul) means "bad blood." I have no idea how much of these stories are true, but the lore around Stoker really adds to the tale of Dracula. Possible etymologies for nosferatu: A leading alternative etymology is that the term originally came from the Greek "nosophoros" (*νοσοφόρος), meaning disease-bearing.[10] F. W. CleanShort Stories—021: Stockton, Chopin, Twain | This week's stories are all about IRONY! I was famous at my school in NYC when, on 9/11, while we were standing on the southernmost tip of Manhattan, I "taught" irony to my students. We had evacuated, and were in that brief moment between the airplane crashes and the towers' collapse. I was standing on a park bench by Castle Clinton, whistling for more of our students to join me. As we stood around, trying to look calm, I had the kids look at the Statue of Liberty, then look at the terrorist attacks. Liberty. Terror. The kids got it. This week, however, we play with two fun short stories and a deeply satiric essay. The first is one you may or may not know, "The Lady or the Tiger," written by Frank Stockton. He lived from 1834 to 1902. Here he is. Nice lookin' fellah, eh? The second story we'll listen to today is one of my favorites. In fact, if you have kids who are in junior high or high school, have them listen to these stories a couple of times, then talk to them. They'll never have a hard time with Irony again (which is good, because it's the easiest way for them to mess up on those high-stakes tests!). The second is "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. Here's Kate. The last piece I've been forced to read myself as it was obvious to me that the Librivox reader kinda missed the point...or wasn't able to communicate it clearly enough when reading it out loud. It's Mark Twain's "War Prayer" and it's pretty brutal. However, it's also timely and something important that we should probably all think about. Twain wrote this when he was unhappy with US actions in the Philippines. Whether you're encouraged by our current overseas actions or not, it's not bad to sit back and think about the point Twain brings up in his short essay/story/parable. He's a master of satire, and like all satire, if taken at face value, he'll simply look like a monster and that will be the end of it. Either way, I hope you enjoy this, our first day of short stories. Today, "The Lady or the Tiger" was read by Alice (that's all she wrote, folks!), and "The Story of an Hour" and "War Prayer" was read by Yours Truly. As always, the theme music was "Chasing Hiro" by Joshua Christian, podsafe music from Garageband.com. | 9/5/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanAusten--017: Chapters 50-52 | I'm relegated to podcasting from my local coffeehouse again, sorry about that. The ambient noise is MUCH worse than before as this joint has tile floors--a local hazard. Apologies. I should have DSL at my Mom's house by tonight, but I wanted to get this posted before that. I'm already mighty late by previous East Coast standards. The trip, however, was successful, and we're all here safe and sound. Though, this morning's news filled me with dread as my darling husband has to fly back to New York Saturday morning. World War IV, is what I'm hearing. WWIII was the Cold War, according to People I Trust. Sigh... Can't we all just get along? Even 'Liz and Darcy? This week, chapters 50-52! But not before a little Rascal Flatts, who I hope will forgive me the brief use of their CARS song. In turn, I hope that you all visit either their website or iTunes and buy either the CARS soundtrack or (and?) some Rascal Flatts music. These guys are HOT! And, honestly, the movie is sweet. Both my boys loved it. I can't apologize enough for the lousy audio on this one. Next week I'll podcast from under a blanket again if I have to. This is ridiculous. I need a studio. Many thanks for the posters and emailers while I was on my journey. I'll tell you more about it next week. Until then, you can read some on my travel blog. Because my son is a questioner...well...so am I, so...apples/trees, you get the picture. I fully expect this road trip to be one of fun and learning. The country is so big and so wonderful...I feel an Emily-from-Our-Town-Moment coming on! If there is internet access and time, you'll hear some audio from the road. If not, you'll notice this post popping up, and a small-ish podcast appearing in your iTunes ontime. Why? Because I love you! Here's the link to our On The Road blog. On a serious note: We need to get serious on the next book. Please, PLEASE record your wishes at the Libsyn site (for some reason the poll HTML didn't work on Blogger) and email me if I left off something you're dying to hear. I'll be much happier if I don't have to make the next book decision on my own. Sorry about the lameness of the poll layout by the way, but it was free. And thank you again, to everyone who's sent in ideas. What a great bunch of people you all are! In fact--late breaking news! I got an audio response which I'm going to play for you from the fabulous Kathryn Pope! Just in time to fill some space while I'm losing my mind...and throwing out pretty much everything I own! CleanAusten—014: Chapters 42–43 | Chapters 42-45! WRONG WRONG WRONG! 43 was much longer than it said on the tag. This week we only have 42-43...but its an hour long episode regardless... Next week, chapters 44-??... Sorry about that! Well, I'm in the homestretch! This week and next week are the last two I'll be podcasting from Croton-on-Hudson...boy I'll need to change the intro, huh? I'll be podcasting from the road the week of August 1st, then from Tucson the next week. IF I can, I'll get my son in on the 'cast...but no guarantees. He's quite the ball-o-goof. So this week! A little discussion of ChickLit and Austen... Jane Austen's novels have been repackaged as chick-lit to reflect our modern conception of her as a romantic novelist. But her world is less comforting than we think, argues Laura Thompson... On 07/09/2006, Laura Thompson created a bit of a stir in the literary world when she said that Chicklit--the girlie romancified summer book lit that's gotten to be so popular among the young--had co-opted Jane Austen, and specifically, Pride and Prejudice. ...It all started in fine non-literary style: with Colin Firth. The scene in the 1995 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice in which Colin got his shirt wet was, almost certainly, the moment that opened the door and let the modern world in upon the quiet, oil-lit writing desk at Chawton Cottage. And when Firth played Mark Darcy in the film of Bridget Jones's Diary, the deal was sealed: Pride and Prejudice was on its way to fame and fortune. Which brings her to a point we've discussed on this podcast: ...What on earth would Jane Austen have made of it all? Well, she would certainly have laughed - "I dearly love a laugh," says Elizabeth Bennet, in the voice of her creator - and she would have enjoyed all the money, because nobody was more aware of its importance. Elizabeth and her sister Jane might have charm to spare, plus wit and good temper to keep fear of the future at bay, but their genteel poverty means that the men who marry them are not just lovers; they are personal relief missions from lives beyond contemplation. And this acute alertness to the significance of money - to the humiliating gulf between the shillings that buy Elizabeth's hair ribbons and Darcy's £30,000 a year - is just one of the many aspects of Jane Austen that has been lost to a contemporary audience. She goes on to say that too often, readers today just think it's neat that Elizabeth wound up with a rich guy--rather than noting that it was her job to find a rich husband or live a life of drudgery. In reality, loving Darcy is the bonus. The real marriage is that of money. ....Actually, there is rather more to Elizabeth than the perfection we behold in her (and ourselves). What, for example, is one to make of her ambiguous joke that she began to love Darcy on "first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley"? Sir Walter Scott, for one, thought she meant exactly what she said; and I think he had a point. ....But the novels as a whole are rather less comforting. Indeed, they are, in some ways, terrifying. There is something appalling about the lack of illusions with which Jane Austen viewed her little world. To censor out such a judgment - or to condemn it as "male" - is to do her an extreme disservice. And the point she makes next made me feel bad for not making a bigger deal out of what Charlotte did, and why: Take, for example, the character of Charlotte Lucas, one of Austen's finest, who cuts through the nonsense now waffling round Pride and Prejudice like a particularly acid lemon. Her presence lurks sombrely behind Elizabeth's lovely lightness: the two girls are faces of the same coin, expressions of their creator's joyful esprit on the one hand and cold eye on the other. Like Elizabeth, Charlotte has a lively mind, but, unlike her friend, she has no physical allure. A quirk of nature has taken her out of the orbit of men such as Darcy. And, because she is plain, she sees the world plainly | 7/19/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanAusten—013: Chapters 38-41 | This week, chapters 38-41! Next week--42-45! A brief episode because I'm behind at work, sorry about that. Today, listen for some more wonderful Collins idiocy. And as far as pride and prejudice go, Elizabeth’s refusal of Darcy’s proposal due to her new understanding of how she misjudged Darcy’s motives knocks them both down a peg. They’re on new footing now—-a lot of their assumptions about each other have been challenged and now there’s room for…well…something to happen. Watch for the groundwork of an eminent disaster…these are the chapters where doom comes a knockin'. As always, Pride and Prejudice is narrated by Karen Savage. | 7/13/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanAusten—011: Chapters 31–34 | This week, Chapters 31-34 (next week 35-37) My 9/11 story, just in case you wondered. And links to poetry/stories from my students too. And then The Soapbox. Sorry about that, but it's been bugging me so much. I hope that one of us will come up with some great idea for how to save the planet and all the people on it. I suppose it's genetic in me--my Dad is a Geographer working on Desertification, so I've known we were in trouble for a long time... Anyway. The Gandhi Institute is a nice place to visit. All the books, none of the crafty talk
I have always enjoyed CraftLit but must confess that I often would skip the beginning chat about knitting, spinning, scrapbooking, and so forth in order to get to what I consider the meat of the podcast: Heather Ordover's excellent and insightful commentary and the audio of each book being featured. Just the Books solves my problem by trimming the crafty-talk and leaving us with the meat. Heather is like the English teacher you always wanted, informative without being pedantic, engaging without being facile, and thoughtfully open-minded to her listeners' contributions. Moreover, when the only available free audio of the out-of-copyright classics is poor quality, she recruits readers who will make the listening a pleasure instead of a chore. Just the Books (and CraftLit) is clearly a labor of love and an example of the best that podcasting can be.
