Music: Phil Collen, Lead Guitar- Def Leppard | An Interview with Def Leppard’s Lead Guitarists Phil Collen “It not everyday that you have an interview with a man that plays in a band that has sold 60 million albums. “ said Bob Barboza. Meet Phil Collen. As one of the world's best-selling music artists, Def Leppard has sold more than 65 million albums worldwide, and have two albums with RIAA diamond certification, Pyromania and Hysteria.[3] They are one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies in the U.S.[4] The band were ranked #31 in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock"[5] and ranked #70 in "100 Greatest Artists Of All Time".[6] Def Leppard continue to play concerts in stadiums, arenas and rock festivals around the world, and plan to tour again in 2011.[7 When I met Phil Collen at the 2011 NAMM Show, I did not expect to find him playing guitar with base player Mike Huckabee. He was a candidate in the 2008 United States Republican presidential primaries, finishing second in delegate count and third in both popular vote and number of states won (behind John S. McCain and Mitt Romney).[5] He won the Iowa Republican caucuses. Following losses to McCain in the Texas, Ohio, Vermont, and Rhode Island primaries, Huckabee exited the race on March 4, 2008 as McCain became the presumptive Republican nominee. The duo of Phil Collen and Mike Huckabee were playing blues in front of about 50 news reporters and a packed house of music lovers. This was part of a special press conference in Anaheim, California. (Photos) www.KidsTalkRadioLA.com. Kids Talk Radio would like to invite you to a special interview with Phil Collen lead guitar player and singer for the group Def Leappard. PS. Education: STEM Program & Hammerax Technology: The John Stannard Interview | How can we integrate the arts into the STEM program? We invite you to a very special audio podcast interview with John Stannard CEO of the Hammerax Company. We invited John on Kids Talk Radio to talk about how the STEM Program in American education has a bearing on the products that he produces. We interviewed John at the 2011 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. In addition, we are trying to find as many ways as possible to keep music alive in our schools. Kids Talk Radio has special plans to create a virtual demonstration of how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics play a complementary role in helping our youth understand the relationships of what they are studying and the world of work. What is the STEM program in America? As technology becomes an integral part of the workplace, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills are no longer just “good skills” to have; they are increasingly important to a 21st-century education. But training students for success in the STEM disciplines also is necessary if the U.S. is to remain globally competitive. Recent results from the Program for International Student Assessment suggested students from at least 20 other nations in math and science bested the top-performing U.S. high school students. Attracting students to the STEM disciplines is the first hurdle, and retaining student interest in these areas is the second. Solving the STEM education crisis won’t be easy—but with the American creativity and spirit we can accomplish amazing things. We are willing to take the lead. I welcome your thoughts? Not only do global learners create global leaders, but the world’s future depends on education focusing on creative and innovative science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning, said ISTE closing keynote speaker Jeff Piontek. “I think we need to focus on STEAM–science, technology, engineering, arts, and math,” Piontek said to loud applause from the conference attendees. “Arts and creativity are needed in the future.” Piontek, a Hawaii-based educator, was selected as “the people’s choice keynote” after a five-month modified crowdsourcing project. Piontek was nominated for his attention to excellence and his approach to delivering digital age education to digital age education to digital age students. “STEM is going to take us to the next phase of where we’re going in education because that’s where all the money is going. But it needs to be integrated with other fields…and creative STEM is going to lead us into the future,” he said. Bob Barboza of Kids Talk Radio commented, “ I think that Piontek is pointing us in the right direction. My goal is to push hard to get music in the mix. There are good reasons to integrate music and the arts into the STEM program. When you start making a musical instrument you are using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” We invite you to continue this conversation with John Stannard (Hammerax and Bob Barboza on Kids Talk Radio.) | 1/18/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

What is a Santana Tribute Band? Caravanserai is one of the best. | What is a tribute band? These are people that love the original bands so much, that they want to be and sound better than the original. A few select bands can do this. Caravanserai is one of the best. In many ways the Santana Tribute Bands are better than the real thing. Take for example the Santana Tribute band “Caravanserai.” You can actually go up to them before and after a concert and talk to them. Leo Herrera is the guitar player and bandleader that plays the part of Santana. You an actually talk to Leo. He will send you e-mail, answer your phone calls, and get right back to you whenever you need information about the band. When you go to his concerts often time they are free. Now here is the best part. I am going out on a limb to say this band sounds better that Santana. Do you know why? They are hungry, they try harder, and they are good people. Now this is not to say that the real Santana people are not all of the above. If fact, the people that know the real Santana say that he is fantastic as a person. But here is where things fall apart. Sometimes you can get so big and the management that you hire put a distance between you and the superstar. Common people hate this. They want to touch and feel the stars. If you want to touch and feel the stars you need to get to know the players in “Caravanserai.” Who is in the Santana Tribute Band, Caravanserai? Kids Talk Radio has the pleasure to interview: Leo Herrera (lead guitar and vocals), Frank D. Parise (timbales and percussion) Bernie Bersamina, (keyboards and lead vocals), Vernon Eakin (drums and vocals), Oscar Fernando Zavaleta (congas, percussion, vocals). The bass player and lead singer Hank Gibson was not at the Kids Talk Radio inter. We stayed around to hear him play and sing at the 2011 NAMM show concert. Hank is the real deal. Great bass playing and great singing is his trademark. He brings just the right amount of energy to the band to put it over the top. The man or women in the street who wants a Santana type experience need to go to a Caravanserai concert. When you go and you close your eyes, you will be at a Santana concert. This band, Caravanserai, gets the Kids Talk Radio five star vote for best Santana Tribute Band. We invite you to listen to their interview at the 2011 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. | 1/18/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Grading the Teachers: Investigative Journalism | Investigative Journalism: LAUSD “Grading the Teachers” A conversation with keynote speakers Doug Smith, Jason Song, and Jason F***h. Our speakers were on the stage at the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism. Welcome to high school journalism day. Kids Talk Radio invites you to hear the story behind the story. This investigation caused major controversy, phones rang off the hooks, and e-mails were coming in from all over the nation. Was this story necessary? Did the Los Angeles Times reporters treat the schools and teacher fair? Do they do their investigative homework? Does the public have the right to get all of the information? Is it fair to name, names? What goes on in the background behind one of our nations biggest stories on education? Who are the reporters involved in this investigation? What did the public think? We asked LA Times staff writer Jason Song if he would be willing to take some feedback from the students at Kids Talk Radio. Jason gave us his business card and we are planning to get kids involved in this important on going investigation and conversation. Additional Journalist in a Box distance learning lessons will be available on your Apple iPads, iPhones and Mac and PC computers. "Keeping Jazz Alive" is keeping jazz alive!
Thanks Bob Barboza for all that you guys do. It is a wonderful podcast, and I am so pleased that Richards Bros. Music was interviewed to help keep jazz alive! Dave & I didn't get the chance to mention the school in Milpitas, CA, where we, and many many kids like us, first got our start... the South Bay School of Music Arts run by Joe Santoro and Deb Goldstein. Without them, we would not be where we are today! You're the best, and keep on doin' it!
