CleanMike Southon - Leicester Business School Guest Lecture | Mike Southon is well known for being a weekly columnist in the FT every Saturday, Mike Southon is also co-author with Chris West of best-selling business books ‘The Beermat Entrepreneur’, ‘The Boardroom Entrepreneur’, ‘Sales on a Beermat ‘and ‘Finance on a Beermat’ and Marketing on a Beerma. He has also produced two e books..’Tendering on a Beermat’ and ‘Networking on a Beermat’ Mike has had a varied career from Boarding School to selling scaffolding…corporate life to entrepreneur. He co-founded ‘The Instruction Set’ in January 1984 and five years later they had 150 employees in the UK and USA and a turnover of £7.5M. Eventually, they got an offer they couldn’t refuse and sold the company in 1989 to Hoskyns (now Cap Gemini Ernst & Young). His books are pithy and very down to earth and have been endorsed by famous names such as Karen Bilamoria ( ‘wisdom without jargon’), and Charles Dunstone (‘strong on the kind of people you need at the different stages of your business growth’) Mike is now a member of the Fellow of the Professional Speakers Association, and spends much of the year giving motivational and coaching talks to the business world These include keynote speeches, conferences and delivering ‘Sales on a Beermat’ workshops which show you how to increase sales immediately and get everyone involved in the sales process, without them feeling sleazy or uncomfortable. “People buy from people they like!”..and yes Mike Southon is an entertaining blend of likeable successful entrepreneurialism. CleanDavid Russel - Leicester Business School Taster Lecture | This lecture introduces cost behaviour and cost classification (fixed and variable) and leads onto breakeven analysis, through the role of contribution. Breakeven analysis is considered initially numerically, but later using formulae and also a graphical approach. The concept of contribution is fundamental to decision making in a variety of short-term decision making contexts(e.g. make or buy, acceptance of a one off order, discontinuing a product, choice of a product where a shortage exists) and this concept would be explored in more detail in subsequent weeks.
