Episode 0037: Interview with Michael Yon, Combat Photojournalist | LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. In this week's episode, Dave interviews Combat Photojournalist Michael Yon. Michael is a former Green Beret, who has been reporting from Iraq and Afghanistan since December 2004. No other reporter has spent as much time with combat troops in these two wars. Michael’s dispatches from the front lines have earned him the reputation as the premier independent combat journalist of his generation. His work has been featured on Good Morning America, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNN, ABC and FOX, as well as hundreds of other major media outlets all around the world. In this episode, Michael talks about combat photojournalism, whether he has ever felt the need to pick up a weapon, how his special forces background affects his images, how to be a successful combat photojournalist, controversy over mortally wounded American soldiers and flag-draped caskets. We created a special video of Michael''s images AND the interview because he did not have time to do a voice-over for each image. This is a little different than our normal format, but thought it would be a good way to have the same kind of video playing. The MP3 podcast interview is still below if you want to download it, or listen without the images. This is one of the shortest interviews I've done, but when you listen, it is clearly one of the most interesting. QHT 012: Interview with Tom Guilmette, Videographer and Filmmaker | This is a Quick Hit Podcast short and we’re going to talk to Tom Guilmette. Tom works in the television and film arena. A major turning point in his television life occurred when Sony released an inexpensive High Definition camera that used the newly developed HDV format. For the first time, Tom was able to shoot in 1080i and edit video at full 1440 × 1080 resolution. Tom says: This is my first film shot with the Canon 5DmkII digital SLR. This camera is simply amazing and it is really changing the "film-look for video" game. The idea for this film came to me a few days ago. I wanted to shoot in an old, abandoned house with no electricity. My goal was to light the entire film with available light and light from a single oil lamp. The low light capability of this camera is unlike anything I have ever used before. This camera is amazing when shooting with the light from a single flame. I called my friend, Adam, and asked him if he would meet me at on old vacant farm house in Attleboro, Massachusetts so that we could shoot a film. We brought a few props, like the old tin, oil lamp and photograph for the film and shot non-stop from 11am to 5pm. We started outside in the rain and then moved into the dank dirt-floor basement. Later in the afternoon, we shot upstairs in the decaying house. All sound was recorded separately with the Zoom h4 stereo recorder with the built in microphones. I used Vinten tripods, and especially loved my new Vinten baby legs when shooting with the Vision 3 (spring#1) to get the low angles. I edited this project with very little grading to the final film with Final Cut Pro and Magic Bullet Looks. If you have any questions about the Canon 5DmkII or the making of this film, please visit my website and post your comments there. Link: tomguilmette.com I have also posted the untreated rough cut of the 1960 farm house flashback. This rough cut includes reference audio directly from the 5Dmk2 microphone. I figured this might be helpful to those who want to hear how the built in mic sounds. Episode 0028: Interview with Canon Photographer Aggie Villanueva, the Grandma Moses of the Southwest | LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. In this week's episode, Dave interviews Canon Photographer Aggie Villanueva. Aggie lived in rural New Mexico's Madrid/Cerillos area without water, electricity or plumbing, hauling water by hand, the only light the kerosene lamp, with no phones or cell phone. In 2001 she moved to an even more remote sector, into a tiny log cabin in the foothill forests of the San Pedro Wilderness area, getting snowed in for most of every winter, but with the luxury of "water pouring right out the wall when she turned the knob." In this episode, Aggie talks about her nickname and background, why she decided to be so remote and what every photographer can learn from that experience (one that is clearly NOT for every photographer), things she learned from that isolation, her work, Aggie Logic, her virtual photo shoots, where her work is being shown, and how she uses social media to promote it. Kevin is an award-winning filmmaker, graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts and founder of Pacific Pictures, a boutique film production company based in Los Angeles, CA that produces live event, corporate and original concept productions for clients around the world. Can a love story be told as a thriller? Megan & Narbeh's true romance seemed to inspire the myth, conventions, and iconography of the great international suspense films, set in the iconic Uppsala winter of their hometown. Knowing only that Narbeh was a member of the Swedish Air Force, and that he used to sneak off the base at times just to see Megan, we took a little dramatic license in this one-of-a-kind love story-thriller hybrid, and hope to have celebrated the places that remind these two what made their very first moments together unforgettable. Episode 0018: Interview with Melvin Sokolsky, Canon Explorer of Light and Fashion & Advertising Photographer | LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. In this week's episode, Dave interviews Canon Photographer Melvin Sokolsky. Melvin was born and raised in Manhattan’s Lower East Side during the lean years of the pre-war era. Here he witnessed the entire spectrum of the human condition played out across a tough and tight-knit community. Upon learning that photographers could make money for “just taking pictures,” Sokolsky was seized by visions of a previously unimaginable career path. He took up an all-consuming regimen of photographic experimentation with a singular focus and determination that have since become his trademark process. This is a pretty unusual episode, in that it is MUCH longer than normal - one hour and almost 23 minutes long! The video itself is an additional 45 minutes in length. But, at 75 years old, Melvin has a LOT to say, and I just had to record it all. I have almost another hour worth of his discussions, that I COULD put in an out-take reel if enough people make a comment (below). In this episode, he talks about how he got started, what his first break was, about the fashion and advertising world of photography, Harper's Bazaar, Photoshop, and so much more! QHT 001: Interview with Dr. Illah Nourbakhsh about the GigaPan | This is a Quick Hit Thursday Podcast short. This week we're talking with Dr. Illah Nourbakhsh of Carnegie Mellon University about the GigaPan Platform. The GigaPan was developed at CMU by Dr. Nourbakhsh, an associate professor of robotics, with the help of the NASA Ames Intelligent Robot Group. The GigaPan idea originated with Randy Sargent, formerly of NASA and now a CMU faculty member based in California. He, Dr. Nourbakhsh and their research team developed an earlier version of the imaging technology for the Mars Exploration Rovers that NASA used to create and explore panoramic images of the Martian surface. It is a robot which transforms your digital camera into a powerful image-maker. The GigaPan robotic platform takes continuous snapshots of a place or an event. Then the software provided by the research team produces a panoramic image built from all these snapshots. The final image is zoomable, so you have the best of two worlds - big panoramas and startling details. Here's a sample image of the Cape Vincent Lighthouse in Upstate New York. There is a ton of data on the image, but here are some of the important points: Size: 0.43 gigapixels Field of View: 111.03 degrees wide, 42.8 degrees high Panorama size: 427 megapixels (33308 x 12840 pixels) Input images: 105 (15 columns by 7 rows) Field of view: 111.0 degrees wide by 42.8 degrees high (top=34.1, bottom=-8.7) Camera make: Canon Camera model: Canon PowerShot G10 Image size: 4416x3312 (14.6 megapixels) Aperture: f/8 Exposure time: 0.008 ISO: 100 Focal length (35mm equiv.): 142.3 mm Digital zoom: off White balance: Automatic Exposure mode: Manual To listen to the full podcast interview, click on the player's forward arrow below. Episode 0007: Interview with Butch Skynear, Artist and SOMETIMES Canon Photographer | First question everyone is going to ask is "why an Artist - what has this got to do with Canon Photography?" Or..."have you gone off the wagon and it's only Episode 7?", and finally "why an abstract Artist - we're photographers, we deal in realism!" Well, I've known Butch Skynear for a long time, in fact well enough to 'trade' him a Canon 10D and an Epson 7600 printer. In return, I got some of his paintings and I felt it was a fair trade. He used the camera to record things that interested him for his paintings, and a couple of times used some images that I shot for his Abstracts. However, spending that time around the old man taught me a LOT about my photography, and maybe myself. Let's face it, you have to be REALLY motivated to work at something for decades, have people constantly saying one thing or another about it, going through good times and bad, making money and sometimes not. Wait a minute - it's starting to sound like photography, isn't it? Anyway, my feeling was that an Artist can teach us a lot about photography and how to visualize things, and maybe give us some ideas about how to transition from being just a photographer, to a photographic artist. In this episode, Butch talks about how he uses a camera in his work flow, the role it plays in his finished product, art concepts that would be appropriate for photographers to know, the melding going on between technology, art and photography and a host of other subjects. His work is featured in private collections around the world, he's shown in several galleries across the United States and has had an exhibit in the Smithsonian. Episode 001: Why an All Canon – All the Time Blog? | First, a little history. I have a picture of myself standing in front of an aircraft (image at left) when I was eight years old and in my hand I had a little Brownie camera. Ever since I was that age, I have been interested in photography. I went into the military in the 1970s and had access to a great photography darkroom almost all to myself. I got my first professional camera - a Minolta - and I went out with the idea that I was going to take pictures of every aircraft in the Air Force inventory. When I moved to the San Antonio Texas area, that hobby of having a Minolta camera and working in a darkroom turned into a full-time portrait studio called Double Exposures (now called David Warner Studio). For many years I did weddings, portraits and photojournalism in a six county area of South Texas. In the 1980’s, I was transferred to Biloxi Mississippi and didn't do much photography while I was there. However, I kept up with the technology and the changes that were happening in the world of photography. I had seen my first digital camera in either the late 1970’s or early 1980’s at a trade show. It was an RCA camera. When I saw that first digital camera, I was convinced that the world of photography was going to be changed forever as soon as it came out. It took a lot longer than I expected but the revolution hit in the 1990s. By that time, I had acquired a large collection of Minolta equipment and lenses and I kept waiting for Minolta to come out with a digital camera. I finally decided that I had waited long enough because nothing had shown up, so I went into a camera store in Austin Texas; went to the sales rep I had been dealing with for many years and asked him which camera should I switch to? All he said was “wait here just a minute.” He returned with a photograph of sports photographers on the sideline of an NFL football game. He asked me “what color are the lenses that most of the photographers have on the sideline?” Well, I looked at the photograph and the majority of the lenses were white in color. He said “who makes white lenses?” I didn't know and I told him so. He replied “Canon makes those lenses and cameras.” Well, that convinced me to take a look at Canon equipment for the first time. I bought two 10 D's and some lenses. From that point on, I was hooked on Canon cameras and digital photography in general. Not that I still don't shoot some film - I have a Mamiya 645 system and an Arca Swiss 4x5 camera. But my real love is the Canon system that I now own. One of the things I had noticed over the last few years, was a real lack of a Canon community - one where you could get conversations, tips, video tutorials and all of the things that you find in the Nikon world, but specifically targeted at the Canon community. I decided that it was time to get one started. So, here we are with LensFlare35 and the idea to put as much Canon camera information as possible in one location. Interesting interviews with Canon professional photographers, their tips, tricks and highlights from the latest equipment that they use, and accessories that work with Canon digital cameras. Hopefully, you'll enjoy what we're trying to do here and you will participate in the experience. We are open to suggestions and comments and look forward to your feedback. So, let's get started with the journey. To listen to the full podcast interview, click on the player's forward arrow below.
