Why Do These Kids Rock, Jam and Amaze Us So Much? | During this episode of Live Fix Radio, we explore the topic of teenage performers and how the live music experience impacts their creativity, inspiration and psychological development. We're excited to dive into this topic and share with you the music of 14 year-old singer-songwriter Kate Diaz and soul-blues-jazz-hip hop octet Kids These Days. Ever since we first saw Kate amaze us at the Metro we knew she was well beyond her years. And we had the chance talk with her before a recent show at the Abbey Pub and ask her about her favorite live performers and how she got started as a musician. Even though they're all under the age of twenty, Kids These Days is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in Chicago. And it was a blast talking to them at Lollapalooza about why they embrace making mistakes during their live show and how the WWF and James Brown influence what they do on stage. You'll here why their debut EP Hard Times is one of my favorite of 2011. Note: A couple f-bombs do get dropped during the interview, but it's for a good cause. It's nothing to fear. Subscribe via iTunes. Show Notes: We've featured the Thrillcall.com concert widget on Live Fix (in the right column) since last year and we're excited to have Courtnee Rizzo, Social Media Manager of Thrillcall.com, give us the inside scoop about how the San Francisco-based startup helps connect fans to the live music experience. Courtnee also filled us in on what she enjoys the most about reviewing concerts on the Thrillcall blog, and why she'll never (ever) forget seeing Coldplay live. Chicago-based DJ, entrepreneur and hearing protection advocate Carolynn Travis tells us what inspired her to create Earlove for live music fans and bands, and why she ranks Orbital live in 1999 as one of her all-time favorite concerts. Product Review For You Continuing our exploration of cool stuff for concert fans, we also tell you why we give Earlove earplugs and the Etymotic HF2 earphones "Two Ears Up" after we put them through a very thorough concert fan examination at SXSW 2011 and other live shows this year. Who Really Wins The Battle of the Bands: Fans, Bands or Brands? | Battle of the Bands contests have been going on for decades. Hundreds take place every year. But who wins, and who loses? The bands, the fans, or the brands who sponsor them? In this latest episode of Live Fix Radio we continue our exploration of this ever evolving culture of artist competition, brand promotion and fan discovery. To get the band perspective, we talked with Don Mitchell (guitar, vocals) from string-rock quintet Darlingside, one of the finalists in the Sennheiser Hear. I Am and picktheband.com contest. We asked Don why the band entered the contest, how they mobilized fans with social media during the voting stage, and what they learned after they won the trip to play the SXSW 2011 showcase. And going beyond the contest, Don shares a fun, yet bizarre, personal concert story that involves an unexpected connection between Spinal Tap live and A Mighty Wind. During the show we mentioned that we didn't have the chance to talk to a fan at the time we recorded the show. Well, we've got some great news! We did hear back from Scott Warren, one of the concert fans who won a trip to the SXSW during the Sennheiser contest showcase. Our email chat with Scott follows the show notes below. Subscribe via iTunes. Show notes: Ongoing Live Fix explorations and interviews with BOTB bands and brands: JanSport, Shure and others. The Darkside of BOTB: Supernova.com and NeverPaytoPlay.com History of Battle of the Bands via Google and via Wikipedia. "Battle of the Band" Movies: Bandslam, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, Freaky Friday... Facebook Battle of the Bands App Music from the episode: "Battle of the Bands" -- The Turtles "Blow Down the House (Live)" - Darlingside "Big Bottom" - Spinal Tap "Old Joes Place" - The Folksmen "Good Man" - Darlingside "The Catbird Seat" - Darlingside Interview with winning fan Scott LF: What did you enjoy the most about the Sennheiser contest? Do you think Sennheiser did a good job of creating a contest that showcased new music and celebrated the concert fan experience? What could they have done better for the fans? Scott: Obviously, I enjoyed winning the most! In all seriousness, I appreciated how the contest promoted indie artists to new fans. By offering such an exciting prize to both fan and band, Sennheiser created the perfect incentive to participate, promote and discover. I'm friends with two of the bands (The Robotanists and Ryan Hill), but I enjoyed checking out the other bands in the contest as well. What was your most memorable moment at SXSW 2011? Have you been there before? I swear they didn't pay me to say this, but I loved the moment when we finally arrived to the Sennheiser showcase. Their representatives bought us drinks, we were taking pictures with everyone. The treatment was so nice, I felt like we were the headlining act. Then I turned around and realized The Antlers (an indie artist I'd recently come to love) were performing. It was all working really well. I'd been to SXSW before, but this was the first time I had a chance to bring people along with me. Having my brothers on board made the trip pretty special. What are your 5 most memorable live music experiences? And how have those experiences changed your life? - Jackson 5 at Dodger Stadium (1984). - Page and Plant at the Hollywood Bowl (1998) - Bob Dylan and Paul Simon at the Hollywood Bowl (1999) - Roger Waters at Hollywood Bowl (2007) - Rage Against the Machine at the Hollywood Palladium (2010) Honorable mentions: Paul McCartney at Coachella (2008), Brian Wilson at Disney Concert Hall (2009), Radiohead at Hollywood Bowl (2008), Nine Inch Nails/Queens of the Stoneage at the Hollywood Bowl (2005) Jackson 5 was my first concert ever. If that didn't change my life, I don't know what would. If you could make the Sennheiser contest more fan-centric, how would you do so? | 5/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Yes, my friends, that's right! We have a treat for you today with a special bonus episode of Live Fix Radio. I met with Phil on stage at Metro in Chicago to talk about his inspirations for creating the tour, a live memorable "Material Issue" moment, and why the celebrated label and record store Wax Trax! records, that introduced Ministry and other bands to the music world, plays a pivotal role in the history of Metro. A history, by the way, which is being celebrated this weekend. Tunes from the Tour and Podcast While you cruise around on the tour bus, Phil, who's also a former Chicago musician, plays DJ and shares classic tracks with you as he explains the backstory of the tour's sites and stops. I included a few of the tour tunes below, plus a few extra tunes I included in the show. Here's my interview with Phil and a listing of the music from the show: Subscribe to the podcast via iTunes. "Elephant's Graveyard" -- Strike Under "Can't Stand It" -- Wilco "Valerie Loves Me" - Material Issue "Everyday is Halloween" -- Ministry "Stigmata" (Live) -- Ministry "Cherub Rock" -- Smashing Pumpkins Our Punk Rock Exploration Continues Another part I loved about the tour was how part of it takes you to locations mentioned in "You Weren't There," a film that chronicles punk rock history from 1977-1984. And together the tour and the movie are an excellent continuation to our ongoing exploration of the punk rock history of Chicago. Get a Sneak Peak We've also got an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek video below of the Metro part of the tour, which includes info about a secret performance spot at Metro. Introducing Live Fix Radio: The Official Podcast For Concert Fans | Yes, my friends, the time has come to launch Live Fix Radio! And we're starting this new and unique podcast with a live music memory experiment and celebration focusing on The Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga, Grinderman, LCD Sound System and more bands that rocked live in 2010 and are currently blazing a tour trail in 2011. Over the last few months we've been creating the next evolution of Live Fix and now it's finally here. Our very first podcast is ready for your listening enjoyment. This first show was recorded February, and due to a few technical difficulties we weren't able to post it at the time we originally wanted to, but nonetheless the kick-off episode is a fun and rockin' ride that's grown sweeter with time like a fine wine. So drink up and enjoy this first episode as we look back at 2010 to celebrate our favorite concerts. We'll explore the details of these unforgettable shows and discover why fans went crazy over Gaga at Lollapalooza, got primal like Dexter during Grinderman at the Riviera and danced their hearts out with LCD Sound System at Pitchfork and Lissie at Perez Hilton's One Night Stand in Chicago. We'll tell you why these shows won the top spot in our hearts and minds as the best of the 2010, and, in some cases, ended up being some of the best shows we've ever been to. What Can You Expect From The Live Fix Podcast? Good question. For starters, it's co-hosted by myself and my wife Colleen. You already know my background. But you might not know that Colleen, in addition to being the Live Fix photographer, is also a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC), and a ten-year expert in counseling, psychology and addiction. Since Colleen's a trained guru in human behavior, during the podcast we're looking forward to combining my curiosity of concert fan behavior and her professional expertise to lead us to explore the past, present and future impact of live music on our hearts and minds. On the way home from shows, Colleen and I always have fascinating chats about why concert fans behave the way we do. We've talked about things like concert fan process addictions and other psychological concepts that are a part of the live music experience. And we're looking forward to sharing those conversations with you during each podcast. And in addition to those psychological discoveries, discussions and experiments during each show, you can expect unique interviews with and stories about your favorite bands in rock, pop, dance, rap, and other genres; insights about new emerging artists; and you'll get to hear stories from other concert fans and key players in the concert industry as we talk with them about how live music has changed their lives, and where the future of live music is headed. What Else Can You Expect To Discover? Yes, during each show we'll dive into the psychological and sociological impact of classic concerts, report on the latest live music news and tell you about our favorite new live albums, DVDs and theatrical concert releases. The Blue Microphone Snowflake Rocks! We also want to thank the folks at Blue Microphone for sponsoring the Live Fix podcast as we use the Blue Microphone Snowflake to record the show. If you're looking to start your own podcast, the Snowflake is great portable USB microphone for podcasters that records excellent audio for your show. It also plugs easily right into your USB drive on your laptop and you're ready to start recording. We used it to record this first podcast and the other Live Fix podcasts that we'll be releasing in the coming weeks, the Snowflake has been working great! So here's the podcast below. Enjoy it, rock out, sit back and chill, or do whatever it is you do when you listen to your favorite podcast. Speak Up and Be Heard And, by all means, let us know what you think.
