| 1 | CleanVideoSharps Terminator Wins Product Innovator Pick and EMS Safety Kudos | Once in a while you find a gem of a product at conferences like EMS Today (http://emstoday.com/) and I was very excited when I stumbled across the Sharps Terminator from Medical Safety Solutions, Inc. (www.SharpsTerminator.us) (http://www.SharpsTerminator.us) In this video I interview Dennis DeCiancio, Sr. while he demonstrates this small device that may eliminate the need for giant sharps container everywhere we work in the health care industry. The Sharps Terminator works at the point of use to melt and sterilize the sharp end of a syringe or butterfly needle using battery operated electrical current and ultra-violet light. That's right, I said MELT. In just 3 seconds, the needle is slagged and snipped off the plastic syringe barrel leaving plastic for the standard red bag and a tiny pile of melted metal and plastic that is inert and is as safe as an office paper clip. This not only got our Product Innovator pick for the show but also won the same recognition from JEMS and EMS Today. I urge you, EMTs and paramedics in the field to check this device out and find out how you can equip your units with one today! We here at the MedicCast and ProMed Network want to again thank JEMS.com (http://jems.com/) and Elsevier for allowing us to come in and cover this trade show for our audience. | 2 | CleanVideoSudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation Features Rescuers and AED Saves | The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (www.SCA-Aware.org) (http://sca-aware.org) is one of those groups who support EMS and emergency health care systems by calling attention to the things that can be done to improve cardiac arrest rescue rates. Carissa Caramanis O'Brien returns with a special interview with two "rescuers" responsible for saves using prompt and high quality CPR, AEDs, and 911 rescue services. This is one of the many non-profit and government organizations you'll find at EMS Today (http://emstoday.com/) and that's one of the reasons this conference is among the top health and medical conferences out there. | 3 | CleanVideoTed Setla Talks about Code STEMI Series Project at EMS 10 Awards | Ted Setla is one of the innovators to watch in emergence medical services because of the ways he tells stories about what we in EMS do every day. His new Code STEMI project he has been working on alongside co-creator Tom Bouthillet (http://ems12lead.com) is just one example of that powerful story telling style he brings to his video projects. Code STEMI is a project that looks at how systems handle cardiac emergencies from all perspectives from the patients and their loved ones to the health care professionals who come in contact with them on their journey through the emergency care systems. Ted and Tom interview them all including the responding paramedics, ER and CCU nurses, physicians, and system medical directors and administrators in order to tell the story of a cardiac care survivor and to highlight the things that other systems can implement to improve their systems of EMS care. You can find all of the Code STEMI episodes and the special behind the scenes highlights at www.CodeSTEMI.tv (http://www.codestemi.tv/). | 4 | CleanVideoCam Pollock from Physio-Control on Future Plans and Innovations | Whenever I get a chance to sit down and talk with Cam Pollock, VP of Marketing at Physio-Control, I take it. While at the EMS 10 Innovator Awards ceremony at EMS Today 2012 this year, Cam was gracious enough to sit down and talk about some of the changes at Physio-Control, Inc. after their divestiture from Medtronic Corporation. These opportunities to see how our product vendors think and view their important work providing us the tools of our emergency medical services trade is vital to making sure we keep the communication channels open between these companies and the customers and patients they serve. I urge you to listen carefully whenever you get to meet an EMS vendor representative and see where their commitments are when it comes to serving the patients you serve through your hands and their products. While you're at it, stop by the Physio-Control Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PhysioControlInc) where they post many interesting articles on topics all over the EMS and health care industry on things that might be affecting you. | 5 | CleanVideoClear Collar Innovates on the Old Standard Cervical Collar | I always enjoy checking out all of the new things I see at conferences like EMS Today. I get to see what is new and innovative in emergency medical services tools and techniques for patient care. Clear Collar (http://clearcollar.com/) is one of those items that takes an old standard concept like cervical spine immobilization and says "we can do it better." I think they've definitely improved on the standard of care with their adjustable clear collar product. The entire collar is made of a flexible, TRANSPARENT, plastic that allows for both patient comfort and visualization of injuries under the collar. Now if we can just perfect the xray goggles, we'll be able to see through our other interventions as well. Until then, the Clear Collar is the best alternative. EMS Today (http://emstoday.com/) is one of the top health and medical conferences out there and focuses on emergency care and emergency medical services. | 6 | CleanVideoTake a Ride in Our EMS Past with the National EMS Museum Project | Ever wonder what it was like back in the early days of emergency medical services, before we had the very specialized vehicles and equipment we have today? The National EMS Museum is doing that right now by keeping track of the tools of the trade from the history of EMS. At EMS Today 2012, host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic checked out an antique ambulance along with some of the early equipment used by the pioneer paramedics around the country. In many cases, before there were paramedics, ambulance service was run by concerned volunteers with little or no first aid training. The used converted hearses to transport patients and with very little room to do any type of care beyond simple transportation to a hospital emergency department. The National EMS Museum is now just a virtual museum project but through fund raising efforts and by traveling to conferences, the organizers hope to have a physical location someday. Find out more about the roots of EMS and how you can support this project at EMSMuseum.org (http://emsmuseum.org). | 16 | CleanVideoInternational Paramedic Certification Standards Discussion from EMS World Expo 2011 | Chris Montera, Scott Kier, and Natalie Quebodeaux were joined in the Finale Video segment from EMS World Expo 2011 by Paramedic Educator Michael Touchstone from the Philadelphia Fire Academy. They discuss a recent white paper calling for an international paramedic certification level that would allow paramedics from different countries to travel, work, and provide care worldwide. This is one of the most common questions in to the MedicCast from listeners and site visitors. "How can I transfer my paramedic education from country A to country B?" There is most definitely a need for this but I fear the U.S. standard for paramedic education will hold this initiative back. The reluctance to move paramedic certification from a "Training" model to an "Education" model is keeping many systems in this country below standard simply to appease organizations like Fire Fighter labor unions. Check out this discussion and all of the video segments, EMT and paramedic guests and full episodes both here at the MedicCast.tv (http://mediccast.tv) site and over at the ProMed Network medical and health conference channel (http://blog.promednetwork.com/category/promed-conference-podcast/). | 9/23/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 17 | CleanVideoSudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation Draws Attention to Survival and System Improvement | Dr. Ben Bobrow shares some of his thoughts about system and community awareness of sudden cardiac arrest. This segment of the Day 3 Finale Video Episode was recorded LIVE from EMS World Expo 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada in the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (http://sca-aware.org) sponsored ProMed Podcast Studio. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is one of the biggest public health failures affecting the U.S. right now according to some experts. It requires a system-wide approach to recognition and treatment starting with community based CPR training, Emergency Medical Services system improvements, individual EMT and paramedic code management training, and close integration with hospital based cardiac care services. | 19 | CleanVideoJon Cloutier from ZOLL Shows Innovative CPR Feedback Technology | In this video episode segment recorded at EMS World Expo 2011, Jon Cloutier from ZOLL shares a look at their heart monitor CPR feedback and rhythm see through monitoring ability. When paramedics and EMTs are working cardiac arrests in the field, it is imperative to minimize interruption of chest compressions even to check the underlying cardiac rhythm. By enabling the ability to see the rhythm "through" the ongoing chest compressions, this ZOLL technology allows emergency responders to be much more effective managing cardiac arrests. ZOLL was the Finale episode sponsor on the final day of the ProMed Network coverage of EMS World Expo 2011. In the rest of the finale video episode, the various hosts from the ProMed shows shared their picks for other innovative products and services seen around the conference. You'll find more video coverage from the expo in Las Vegas here at MedicCast.tv (http://mediccast.tv) and at the ProMedNetwork.com blog conference channel (http://blog.promednetwork.com/category/promed-conference-podcast/). | 9/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 20 | CleanVideoHeart Rescue Project Defines Sudden Cardiac Arrest Care Best Practices | As part of the ProMed Network EMS podcast coverage of EMS World Expo 2011, several groundbreaking projects, companies and organizations came on board for sponsorship support. One of these was the Medtronic Foundation Heart Rescue Project, a program that highlights success stories in selected EMS systems where they are improving sudden cardiac arrest survival rates. They sponsored this video episode of the EMS Leadership Podcast with host Chris Cebollero (http://EMSLeadership.com). These improvements are being demonstrated in various demographic and geographic locations and encompass different styles of change and adaptation of the ECC Cardiac guidelines. With such a diversity in EMS systems and cultures in the U.S., it makes sense to approach improvements from different directions. You can find more about the Heart Rescue Project including reports of ongoing findings and best practices in the study at HeartRescueProject.com (http://HeartRescueProject.com). Scott brings experience from other "higher risk" industries including airlines to talk about building a "Culture of Safety" from the ground up. That may not be the case and Scott has been brought in to this project to show how other industries with inherent, defined, and calculated risks all have implemented successful safety culture changes. People (including some EMTs and paramedics) were actually alarmed and shocked by this! The problem is that no one with any real knowledge (like an EMT or paramedic) is providing that information from a credible source. Your agency could be that source for your surrounding community. Create videos that reflect real situations that might be encountered in your community. You could educate about water and boating safety, hiking and camping safety, pedestrian and cycling safety, car seats . . . You get the picture! One of the best and cheapest ways to do this is through the multitude of free or inexpensive training resources, coned classess, PSA's for radio and TV, and downloadable handouts, posters, and study aids from the federal government. Federal and state websites like the National Institutes of Health (NIH.gov), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC.gov), and others are full of ready to use training and community outreach materials for your use. You can download them for printing or order pre-printed materials from them for minimal fees. I recently focused on this for stroke education and outreach but there are many other pieces of literature, posters, videos and more for lots of other health care topics. Recent MedicCast episodes on hyperglycemia and stroke (http://www.mediccast.com/blog/2011/01/24/stroke-stress-hyperglycemia/) and on stroke awareness and assessment for EMS (http://www.mediccast.com/blog/2011/01/16/stroke-assessment-prehospital-treatment-and-episode-252/) with links to sample resources on stroke education and outreach. --- In the meantime, don’t forget that you can also subscribe to the MedicCast TV weekly commentary using the links below to catch more commentary and coverage of the world of EMS here at MedicCast.TV (http://mediccast.tv/)!
