Shut the F*** Up! (podcast #8)
|
I’ve always felt like instrumental rock tunes get a bum rap, like people look down on them as merely background music not worthy of their full attention simply because there isn’t some egotistical frontman babbling incessantly over the music. So podcast 8 is dedicated to the gems of the genre – the Link Wrays, the Dick Dales, the Booker T and the MGs. I’ll admit, it’s hard to write a solid instrumental tune but when it’s done well, it’s powerful. And I’m not talking about jazz because that’s a whole other thing in and of itself. So, before you turn your nose up at this one, dear listener, remember it’s still chockfull with the kind of film samples you’ve come to expect from these podcasts, and you’ll definitely recognize more of these tunes than you realize, (probably from numerous Tarantino movies). Anyway, I bookended this one with two of my favorite tunes of all time, Soul Finger and Sleepwalk. I hope you dig it. It’s good driving music. Play loud. Play often.

Summer Summer Summer (podcast #7)
|
It’s the first day of summer, and nothing compliments driving around town with the windows down and inhaling in the warm night air, than some good tunes. So whether you’re BBQ’ing with the homies, relaxing solo in your hammock with a margarita in your palm, strolling the boards down at the beach or just hanging in at the homestead, here’s the soundtrack to your summer. This one’s nothing but shameless fun – like the best summer’s always are. I hope you like it. Enjoy.

An Earful of Monkeys (podcast 6)
|
Well, you knew this one was coming sooner or later. I mean, what’s a “Mighty Joe” podcast without an episode dedicated to our primate namesake, right? Besides, I love monkeys, apes, chimps, the whole bit. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching the Planet of the Apes movies on TV or maybe BJ and The Bear, Any which Way But Loose, Grape Ape, King Kong – the list could go on and on. And obivously, I’m not the only one fascinated because songwriters have been penning tunes about primates for years, as proven here on podcast #6. This is easily the most mainstream collection of tunes so far, but – hey, they all rock so go with what you know. I’m sure you’ll still find a few surprises hidden in there as well. It’s a lot of fun. So tune in, turn on and drop out to An Earful of Monkeys. Enjoy.

Songs About Joe (audio narcissism) Podcast #5
|
Narcissism (nahr-suh-siz-em) – noun: Inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self love; vanity.
The idea for podcast #5 was pretty simple – I wanted to see if I could come up with an entire playlist of songs about guys named Joe. I mean, there’s gotta be tons of them right? And, if you’re an average Joe like me, maybe you’re tired of people randomly approaching you and spitting out “hey Joe, where you going with that gun in your hand?” It just gets old after the first 50 times. So, allow me to present to you (and the rest of the world) a cornucopia of other quotable lyric options, so that the next time we’re lucky enough to cross paths, you can say “Look at Killer Joe go” or maybe “Rise and Shine Sleepy Joe, There are places to go….” After all, variety is the spice of life or so they say. You’re welcome, internet.
Anyway, this one was a lot of fun to put together, and I think it’s a good listen with hopefully a lot of tunes that you’ve never heard before. I hope you dig it.
So strap on your ear goggles – here’s Songs About Joe (audio narcissim) aka podcast #5.

Mad Monster Party (podcast #4)
|
With Halloween just around the corner, I decided to go all out for podcast #4 and present a collection of some of my favorite fun & spooky monster tunes. This one was a little tricky, as I had to pick through 6+ hours of music in an effort to keep it under an hour but trust me, this isn’t your typical dollar store “halloween music cd” – there’s no Monster Mash, there’s no Werewolves of London and there’s no Ghostbusters. So open your ear drums and hopefully you’ll find some new favorites as well as some rare gems.
So…..Welcome to Mad Monster Party -enjoy!

Coffee For Your Ear Hole (Podcast #3)
|
We’re coming in hot with podcast #3 – this one’s a musical tribute to our lifelong friend and favorite beverage, coffee. No, not these mocha-frappa-milkshake-sugar-lattes the kids are drinking these days – we’re talking straight, hot black coffee, warm and strong, just like Flo at the diner used to make. The good stuff.
Believe me – this one took a bit of research and even I was surprised by the amount of tunes written over the years about the mighty mud. So, by all means, brew a pot of java, throw on your head phones or crank up the hi-fi but sit back and enjoy a little Coffee For Your Ear Hole. I hope you like it.

Something to be Proud Of (the Delaware Music podcast)
|
The idea of doing a Delaware Music podcast has been in the back of my mind ever since I started transferring my collection of old 7 inch vinyl to digital. I thought it would be a shame if this music got lost because, even though most of these bands never really broke through nationally, or sold a million records, the songs here meant a lot to me growing up, and they meant a lot to the hundreds of kids who came out to see these bands over and over again in the local church halls and school gymnasiums. They’re a part of our youth and our history, and that’s something worth savoring and sharing, no matter how corny you think that sounds. And, if you’re not from Delaware, I hope I can turn you on to some great music. There’s something on here for everyone, I’m sure.
Overall, most the tracks on this collection are from the early to mid-90s, when I spent most of my time hanging out in Newark, playing shows and seeing bands, but I did include a few from the past decade as well. In no way am I claiming this to be the end-all, be-all documentation of the music scene or Delaware’s Greatest Hits or anything silly like that. Unfortunately, there are many, many bands that I originally planned to include in this podcast but didn’t because I either couldn’t track down the tunes or was trying to keep this beast under an hour. These are just some of my personal favorites – much respect to all the artists included here.
And finally, this podcast is dedicated with love and respect to Art Callahan, former owner of the Barn Door, who gave many of these bands their first shows as well as a second home. Thanks for the support and the good times, Art.
So here’s Something to be Proud of - the Delaware Music podcast – enjoy!

Don’t Knock the Rock, Billy (podcast #1)
|
It’s been a long time coming, but I’m happy to announce that I’m starting a regular music podcast via this site, with plans on posting a new installment every two months. There’ll be no one particular music style or anything but each episode will have it’s own theme or vibe to it. And, down the road, I’d like to have special guests throw a playlist together as well, which should be cool.
So, for the inaugural episode, I decided to take it back to the roots and drop a rockabilly flavored mix. As a little kid in the 70′s, I was exposed to lots of early rock-n-roll records, thanks mainly to my parents and the slew of 50′s themed movies (American Hot Wax anyone?) that were popular at the local drive in, and that music has always held a special place in my heart. Most of the stuff on here’s fairly rare so don’t expect to hear Johnny B. Goode or anything like that. Much of the vibe takes inspiration from Lux Interior’s infamous Purple Knif radio show, which I first heard a few years ago and immediately fell in love with, so this podcast is also an homage to Lux for all his inspiration. RIP Mad Daddy,
And I know some of you are probably scratching your heads thinking “But Castro, weren’t you called Joey Marr at one point? Shouldn’t you be dropping a classic Brit-pop mix?” or “What about that old school hip-hop!” Don’t worry – it’s coming. But, regardless – no matter which way your prejudices swing on rockabilly – give this podcast a chance. It’s a lot of fun – and this isn’t your everyday bag of oldies but goodies. I tried to give it that Quenten Tarantino kind of vibe, if you get what I mean.
So here’s Don’t Knock the Rock, Billy – I hope you enjoy it. And for those interested in downloading it – click here and rave on children.
