Video(MV293) What Do You Say To Parents of a Dying Child? | According to the CDC http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5648a1.htm Cancer is the fourth most common cause of death (after unintentional injury, homicide, and suicide) for people 1- 19 years old. The survival rate of childhood cancer has increased. That’s the good news. The bad news is there are still children dying every year from cancer. Monday night a dear boy I know, Hunter Zen Thawley died in his parent’s arms. He has been fighting leukemia since he was about 16 months old. He was not quite 3 and half. He has wonderful parents, Lenore and Zen who are my friends. Lenore has chronicled their lives with cancer in her well written blog www.healinghunter.com. They have done everything they could do to save him. What they have gone through no one would wish on their enemy, let alone such good people. I am devastated that Hunter has passed. When I taped this momversation I knew he was terminally ill, but I guess I still held out hope for an 11th hour miracle. This kid has been tough and his parents have been amazing. Staying positive, persevering through it all. The injustice of this staggers my mind and breaks my heart. What can I or anyone say or do for his parents or for any parent who is losing or has lost their child? There is no greater hell. That is what lead me to ask Heather Spohr ,what I should do? Sadly, Heather has first hand experience with this. She lost her beautiful daughter Maddie to a respiratory infection when she was 17 months. Somehow Heather has gone on and now has a new baby girl. She kindly allowed me to ask this very tough question. She is a dear person who is permitting us into her painful journey. Nothing funny or idle today folks, this is as rough as it gets. | 3/10/10 | Free | View In iTunes
Video(MV294) Who Decides Who Should Fly | Recently, director Kevin Smith took to Twitter to complain about being kicked off of a Southwest flight for being, well, too fat to fly. And while no one likes to be cramped on a flight, is it right to call a person out for being "of size" after he's been seated? And isn't the real problem that the seats are really too small for everyone? And which group is going to be ousted next? People with children? Alice Bradley of Finslippy asks, "Who decides who can fly?" | 3/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes
Video(MV292) How Do You Talk To Your Kids About Sexual Abuse? | As a parent, your job is to tackle the tough issues. And sexual abuse has to be one of the toughest topics to discuss with your kids. Unfortunately, it's also a necessary one. After all, to be forewarned is to be forearmed, and children need to know about the dangers of the world so they can protect themselves. The question is, how do you broach the subject? Asha Dornfest of Parent Hacks asks, "How do you talk to your kids about sexual abuse?" | 3/3/10 | Free | View In iTunes
Video(MV290) Is It Ever Okay to Use the "R" word | Sarah Palin recently made headlines (surprise, surprise) condemning Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for using the "R" word... and giving fellow conservative Rush Limbaugh a slap on the wrist for his use of the arguably pejorative term. And while we're all for free speech in the USA, some words sting a little more than others, such as using the word "retard" as an insult. So, should we place a moratorium on the word, or is that just PC garbage? Daphne Brogdon of Cool Mom asks, "Is it ever OK to use the 'R' word?" | 2/26/10 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoDo Your Finances Affect Your Friendships? | Your friend wants to dine at La Cher Riche. You can't afford it. Or maybe you want to enjoy a weekend in the Poconos, but your friends can barely afford "Poc." Money can be a great separator in relationships. At best, it can be a point of awkwardness. At worst, it can be a bone of contention. But should finances really affect friendships? Or, more importantly, do they? Is it OK for parents to pull children out of school for educational experiences, vacations, and family bonding time? Or do you think it's harmful, disrespectful, or disruptive? And should we judge parents who sometimes decide to value life experiences over the classroom? Sure, you've been married for 10 years, and V-Day seems like an unnecessary expense, especially in this economy. But, but, but! Pink tulips and a sweet Vermont teddy bear? How could you not melt? And when your hubby acts like Valentine's Day is the same old, same old? It's hard not to feel just a bit disappointed. So, will you be going all out this February 14th? Or will it be just another day at the office (i.e., home)? Heather Armstrong of Dooce asks, "How important is Valentine's Day to you?" | 2/4/10 | Free | View In iTunes
Video(MV285) The Vaccine/Autism Debate: Is It Finally Over? | Vaccines and autism: for years, there have been talk that the MMR immunization caused autism in otherwise healthy children. Many in the health field, however, dismissed the link. Last February, it was shown that the doctor who first made the link had faked the results. And now the medical journal The Lancet retracted the article in which those results were published, an unusual move on the part of the British publication. But will the debate rage on? Do parents like Jenny MCarthy still insist that the MMR vaccine caused their children's disorder? Daphne Brogdon of Cool Mom asks, "Vaccines and autism: debate over?" | 2/4/10 | Free | View In iTunes

After all, accidents happen, but that doesn't make you feel any less guilty. So, how did you deal? But why do parents get so competitive when it comes to developmental milestones? | 50 | VideoMV277 - How Do You Teach Your Children to Be Grateful? | With the devastation in Haiti, we've taken stock of the blessings that we have: food, shelter, family, and friends. Do you wrap your kid in head-to-toe cling wrap before she goes to the playground? OK, maybe that's going a little far, but there are plenty of germaphobes out there; just ask the manufacturers of anti-bacterial products. And with H1N1 still making the news, it's easy to get nervous about the microscopic creepy-crawlies that pervade our environment. But are our fears somewhat unfounded? | 57 | VideoBusted: When Your Kids Catch You In a Lie | OK, Ms. Pinocchio, has your child caught your nose growing? OK, so maybe what you do shouldn't be labeled as "lies." You're... stretching the truth. Misrepresenting reality. Exaggerating a tad. OK, OK, so you might occassionally lie to your children. But it's harmless, right? But what do you do if your kid catches you lying? Has that ever happened to you? Dana Loesch of Mamalogues wants to know, "Has your child ever caught you in a lie?" But we didn't ask the important question: do you even tell your kids that Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny are real? After all, Santa is one of the most magical aspects of the holiday season. But are you "lying" to your children when you perpetuate the myth? It's not that moms don't love to sleep; it's that moms don't get to sleep, what with crying babies, sick kids, and driving middle schoolers from lesson to lesson. And when you don't get enough sleep (or any sleep), you get so flippin' tired that you start to lose it a little. You put your milk in your clothes closet; you call your baby by your hubby's name; you go to the grocery store when you meant to pick your kids up from school. So what crazy things have you done when sleep deprived? Daphne Brogdon of Cool Mom asks, "Just how flippin' tired are you?" | 12/10/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

VideoAre Mommies Allowed to Have Tantrums? | If toddlers can throw temper tantrums, then why can't moms? After all, there's a lot of frustration that comes from raising kids who have very definite opinions on such things as the proper time for going to bed (never) and what constitutes a good dinner (ice cream). And though we all try our hardest to maintain an even keel, sometimes a mom can't help having a good ol' fashioned freakout. Guest Sarah Burns of The Ohana Mama asks, "Are moms allowed to have temper tantrums? | 11/25/09 | Free | View In iTunes

Are these simply harmless costumes or something you wouldn't let your child be caught undead in? Why can't Halloween be one time in the year where kids can just be kids? And do we need to buy these questionable costumes, or is it better to make your own with your children? Dana Loesch of Mamalogues asks, "Have kids' Halloween costumes crossed the line?" | 10/23/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
VideoDo You Let Your Child Watch Scary Movies? | It's October, and it seems like everyone is lining up to see the latest creepy flick, Paranormal Activity. But for little kids, movies as seemingly benign (at least from the commercials) as Coraline can be traumatizing. After all, kids and scary movies go together like ice cream and ranch dressing. Or do they? Are your kids not bothered by frightening films? Mindy Roberts of The Mommy Blog asks, "Do you let your kids watch scary movies?" | 10/22/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoTalking To Your Kids About Race | One of the most difficult issues to discuss with your kids is race. From an early age, children can recognize the surface differences between kids, such as the color of skin. And as well all know, where kids go, so go questions. So how much of an emphasis do you put on race, and how can you relay your attitudes towards diversity to your children? Alice Bradley of Finslippy asks, "How do you talk to your kids about race?" | 10/20/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoDealing With a Miscarriage | A miscarriage can dredge up myriad emotions: guilt, sorrow, anger, and isolation. A miscarriage truly is a loss, and it's natural to grieve. It's also natural to ask yourself questions such as, "What did I do to cause this?" even though the majority of miscarriages have nothing to do with a mother's actions. And though it's difficult to talk about, miscarriages should be discussed because such a large number of women experience them; talking through the pain can often lead to a healthier recovery and less stigma. So, today on Momversation, the panelists are speaking about miscarriage, the feelings associated with them, and the reaction of friends and co-workers. Our guest Megan Meany of NBC 4 New York asks, "How do you deal with your or a friend's miscarriage?" | 10/16/09 | Free | View In iTunes
