Pups will be weaned faster: Megabats generally have pups 12% of their body size, and microbats give birth to pups about a quarter (25%) of their body size. That would be like an average woman giving birth to a 35 pound child! The reason for giving birth to such large pups serves a great purpose; weaning times are far less. A bat needs to grow up and eat solid food quickly, and as soon as the bat can fly, it is time to move on to solids. The bigger the pup starts out, the less time it will take for it to actually be able to fly. Go Daddy.com picked us for a Go Daddy campaign. CleanMostly Trivial 211 Bats [trivia] | Bats All of us know at least one scary bat story. One reason they show up in so many ghost stories is that they’re nocturnal, they hunt and fly in the dark, so on the rare occasions when we do see them, they seem to emerge from the heart of the night. But that’s just a bad reputation for this generally gentle animal. 1,000 species of bats Most of the nearly 1,000 species of bats worldwide use echolocation for food gathering and navigation, which basically means that instead of seeing where they’re going, as humans do, they hear where they’re going. Bats are nearly blind (hence the phrase, "Blind as a bat,"), but they have extraordinary hearing; they make sounds, and from the way that those sounds bounce back to them, they can tell what’s around them and how far away it is. What Do You Know, Joe? A microbat, like the hollow-nosed bat, for instance, will give birth to a pup that is about 25% of her body size. Why are the babies so large? A. Pups will be able to hold onto the cave ceiling easier B. Pups will be teens and they won't have to worry about "diaper days" C. Pups will already be able to fly D. Pups will be weaned faster Last Posts Answer: B. He was ultimately determined to be alive due to his grasp of abstract concepts, such as art and humor (and was granted US Citizenship at the end of the sequel). Not just cat history, but the history of all land dwelling carnivores can be traced back to the Miacis, and that includes dogs! The Egyptians loved their felines The Ancient Egyptians had developed a method of storing grain and other food supplies. Naturally these stores attracted rats and mice. It was not long before cats were tempted by the abundance of the rodent population. Cats were mummified after death and buried in sanctified plots, often with their supplies of mummified mice for the afterlife! One such plot alone has been found to contain the remains of 300,000 cats, and has proved an invaluable resource for studying the history of the cat. Go Daddy.com picked us for a Go Daddy campaign. CleanMostly Trivial 199 Barcode [trivia] | What is a UPC barcode? And how does it work? Universal Product Codes (also known as GTIN-12) appear as lines (bars) of varying widths representing the series of numbers commonly shown below the bars. Barcode scanners, as you will know them from your favorite retailers, read the bars and convert them back to the 12-digit UPC number that they represent. This number is then looked up within the retailer's inventory system to find the corresponding product name and price that you provided them with when you signed your agreement for them to carry your product. In short, the UPC is a 12-digit unique code for your product represented by scannable bars. Camera based scanners Camera based scanners are also very interesting and merit a closer exam. The technology is very fresh, and they are not very popular at this point, but they allow the average person to scan his or her own bar codes. Most favorite on newer smart phones, these scanners actually dissect a picture of a barcode and use software to decode the meaning of the code itself. For the 1st the right time, almost anyone can decode favorite bar code types such as ISBM and UPC wherever they are and can promptly determine information on mostly any product. CleanMostly Trivial 195 The Telephone [trivia] | How much do YOU know about Telephone history? Hello! Is any one there? Pick up the Phone! The first prototype of the sound-proof phone booth was built in 1877. Mr. Watson, Alexander Graham Bell's trusty assistant, used a bunch of bed blankets around a box. He created the booth to prevent his landlady from listening in on his conversations. Some callers didn't like using the early phone booths because the doors would get stuck, forcing users to fight their way out. In the early 1880's some well-to-do telephone owners started the unusual trend of paying to have a theatre employee hold a telephone receiver backstage, transmitting live plays and operas into their living rooms. CleanMostly Trivial 193 Cadavers [trivia] | Cadavers What happens to our bodies? The various stages of decomposition can help determine how long a body has been dead. The first stage is self digestion, and is where the body eats itself, also known as autolysis. This happens when the cells break down the body into elements the cells can eat; this creates a liquid that gets between the layers of skin and makes the skin peel off. During this stage, flies (when present) start to lay eggs in the openings of the body: eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears, open wounds, and other orifices. Hatched larvae (maggots) of blowflies subsequently get under the skin and start to eat the body. The night has been associated with a lady dressed in black velvet and bejewelled with glowing diamonds we know as stars. Almost everyone knows that there are twelve zodiac signs in the Chinese astrology, namely rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep (ram or goat), monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. CleanMostly Trivial 190 FIFA Soccer / Football World Cup [trivia] | Mostly Trivial 190 FIFA Soccer World Cup [trivia] The World Loves Soccer [football] Soccer IS Football except to the U.S. Early Kicking Games All throughout history, many ball games have emerged as well as perished independently to one another, often leaving us with nothing but speculations. Considering that many of these games were impulsive and had few or no regulations, it is likely that they also were quite violent. The roughness of these early games surely must have demanded involvement of the legs, for kicking. We have to emphasize the difference between such scuffles and today's skillful game. Even although modern football evolved from rugby, a major distinction stands between the two - the feet are not only used for kicking but also for controlling and moving the ball (dribbling). Using body parts other than the feet, like the head or chest, is another factor suggesting the development advanced technical skills. While most ancient ball games had no proven relation to rugby or simply diminished ignominiously long ago, they certainly must have produced skillful players or artisans, much like the superstars of today. Therefore, we must acknowledge these as predecessors of the world's most popular sport. ______________ Thanks for your support. ______________ Help Mostly Trivial out would ya? We've com a long way, learning about Podcasting, Mics, Hardware and recording techniques. Why Family Guy was cancelled is still a topic of debate. FOX claims poor ratings along with expensive production costs caused the show to cancel itself, but many can view that as a cover up. Perhaps if FOX didn't move their timeslot, or at least kept their time the same every week, poor ratings would not be a factor. While this controversy is going on, Cartoon Network was playing reruns, and their ratings prove to be excellent; beating Dave Letterman and Jay Leno. Did FOX want the show to be cancelled? CleanMostly Trivial 185 Magic [trivia] | Mostly Trivial 185 Magic [trivia] Cave men and how magic started Magic has been practiced for a very long time. In fact it goes back as far as 50,000 B.C. Can you believe it, 52,000 years ago magic was started? Prehistoric people who buried cave bears probably started "magic". They probably did this as a magic rite (spell). Scientists believe those drawings and carvings are a form of magic. For example, hunters would probably draw animals or hunting scenes before going on hunting trips. CleanMostly Trivial 184 Electrifying Personalities [trivia repost] | Mostly Trivial 184 Electrifying Personalities [trivia] repost Do you know what a Joule is? James Prescott Joule was born in Manchester, England, in 1818. Like Ampere, he was home schooled and was sent to university at Cambridge when he was sixteen. The Industrial Revolution was in full swing at this time, and one of Joule's ambitions was to replace steam-driven engines with electric motors, so his first investigations were into the production of heat. Since Joule's research was self-funded, he was free to pursue the areas he wished and this resulted in him establishing the equivalence between heat and mechanical work as well as the cooling effect of rapidly expanded gas (the latter of which is used in refrigeration systems). Joule can also be considered as an inventor; among his inventions were arc welding and the displacement pump. Netflix is our sponsor. Click on the Netflix Ad on the left hand side of the site. CleanMostly Trivial 176 Parking Meters [trivia] | Parking Meters Trivia It Pays to Park... But not to you! Hands Down The parking meter has been almost unchanged since it started driving in 1959: one meter per space; put your money in the slot. In driving in Northern Europe younever see parking meters; You buy a piece of paper at a parking automat (typically one per block) and put it on your dashboard. Why the difference? I assume that available technologies are the same on both sides of the Atlantic, so it must be that the lower wage in the U.S. of the low-skilled meter collectors leads us to choose individual meters. Why the change? One would think it’s because the price of the kiosks has fallen steadily while even low-skilled wages continue to rise — to the point where the European-style technology is now cost-effective. JULY 25, 2007 As a Windows user we all get tired of Windows Genuine Advantage validations. Turns out the investment Microsoft made in that may have shut down a counterfeit ring that has distributed more than 2 billion dollars of counterfeited software. The FBI and Chinese authorities have a bunch of people under arrest. Based on what we have seen overseas I am betting this is just the tip of the iceberg. How to Spot Counterfeiting Due to continuing improvements by U.S. mints, it's pretty tough to make counterfeit bills credible. However, there are still counterfeiters out there. It's not as hard to make paper money that will at least pass to a cashier's till, and new technology is used on the black market to create counterfeit bills. It takes a skilled eye to spot some counterfeit money, as well as attention to detail and a few moments to scan different parts of the bill. CleanMostly Trivial 172 Superstition [trivia] | Superstition Trivia Are You? I'm Not! Some people are just plain silly... The superstition that walking under ladders is bad luck is fairly widespread. In America and Europe, this belief originated around the late 1700s. There are a few theories as to the original thought behind this superstition. The first is that a ladder leaning against a wall forms a triangle--or trinity--with the ground. Walking through this triangle is disrespectful to God and may show your sympathy to the Devil. Whatever the origin of the superstition, there is a practical reason not to walk under ladders: you might get hit by something falling from above. Even those of who don’t think we’re superstitious have a reflexive fear of tempting fate. In theirexperiments, Dr. Risen and a colleague, Thomas Gilovich of Cornell, found found that students think that not doing their reading makes them more likely to be called on in class; that trading away a lottery ticket makes that ticket more likely to win; that an applicant to Stanford graduate school is less likely to get in if he goes around wearing a Stanford T-shirt. CleanMostly Trivial 168 Michael Jackson [trivia] | Michael Jackson Trivia How much do you know about the King of Pop? Michael Jackson was the subject of the controversial 2003 documentary "Living With Michael Jackson." It profiled Jackson's hectic lifestyle and included his children. Jackson has repeatedly referred to the special as inaccurate and unfair. Neither the host nor the show's parent network issued any retractions or modifications, but Jackson later released videos from his personal camera which he'd had present at every interview with Bashir. From that recording it showed Bashir's original answers to Jackson, which he excluded in his documentary, and it showed things in a different light. CleanMostly Trivial 163 Sports [trivia] | Sports Trivia. Scandals anyone? Pete Rose "Betting on Baseball" scandal One of the worst sports scandal is Pete Rose's banishment from baseball. The 1919 Black Sox scandal ultimately did more harm to the game, but Rose's case was much more tragic. Here you have the manager for the Cincinnati Reds, the sport's all-time leader in base hits, and he gets thrown out of the game for illegally betting on baseball. Pete Rose was a Hall-of-Fame player, but a dubious manager. He was a first ballot Hall of Famer, and he threw it away because he had zero self-control. And make no mistake about it, Pete Rose bet on baseball, he bet on the Reds, and he knew the consequences should he be caught. A manager who bets on his own team sacrifices the very integrity of the game, and Rose should never be allowed to manage or have a job in baseball again. He should, however, be recognized in the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a player, while noting his lifetime banishment for betting on baseball. To this day, ESPN has never covered a bigger story. ______________ Help Mostly Trivial out would ya? Netflix is our new sponsor. Click on the Netflix Ad on the left hand side of the site. CleanMostly Trivial 149 Holidays around the World [trivia] | Holidays Around the World Trivia Let's Celebrate! Here's one for example... Cinco de Mayo is frequently regarded as the Mexican equivalent of the United States 4th of July. This is simply not true. Actually, it is the equivalent of the 5th of May. LOL. Of greater importance is the battle of Cinco de Mayo that occurred in 1862. Juarez, who had been Zapotec Indian minister of Justice in Juan Alvarez' cabinet in the 1850's, entered Mexico City on January 11, 1861 and promptly expelled the Spanish minister, the papal legate, and members of the episcopate. Additionally, he took steps to enforce the decrees of 1859 disestablishing and disendowing the church. He could not have known at this time that almost a century later, "antidisestablishmentarianism" would become the longest word in the English dictionary.Although Juarez was recognized by the United States and had received both moral and military aid from the US, there were over $80,000,000 in debts at that time to Europe alone. The Mexican Congress in July 17, 1861 decreed the suspension for 2 years of interest payments on the external national debt, and 3 months later a convention occurred between Great Britain, France, and Spain calling for joint intervention in Mexico. ______________ Go Daddy.com picked us for a Go Daddy campaign. CleanMostly Trivial #118 More Animal Fun [trivia] | More Animal Fun This show is dedicated to Sprocket She was my 17 year old Wiemeraner. She passed away Tuesday Dec. 5th 2007, we'll miss her so much. The Weimaraner's written history begins around 1880, when this breed was first exhibited at a Berlin, Germany dog show, where they were referred to as "l'mongrels". The Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar (Germany), wanted to develop a multipurpose dog. It's nickname is the "Gray Ghost"; this comes from not only the Weimaraner's color, but also its ability to be quick, using an almost cat-like stealth while in the field, combined with a silent, almost shadow-like way of working. After World War II ended, many soldiers brought home stories of this wonderful, strangely colored dog known as the Weimaraner. As people heard of these stories many wanted this new Wonder Dog. Within six months a Weimaraner will go from a 3 pound puppy to a 70 pound dog with a mind of its own. It is not a plaything, nor should ownership be frivalous. Without proper training and socialization, this dog can become a neurotic, problem dog and almost impossible to manage. With hard work and love you will rewarded with an incredible companion. CleanMostTriv #111 Bubble Gum | Bubblicious! For better or ill, I sat on a stump, And was stuck by a lump, Of gum on my rump...And am sitting there still. Pop goes the Bubble Gum! For 12 years, the selling, importing, manufacturing and chewing of gum was illegal in Singapore. The ban was lifted in 2004 - - but the chewy stuff can only be bought at pharmacies. Customers must give their names and show an identity card before receiving their gum. Pharmacists who don’t follow these rules can be jailed for up to two years and fined $4,700! In some parts of the world, especially the South China Seas, piracy still exists today. Why? The common misconception among citizens is that personal use quantities of chewing gum are allowed into Singapore. However, according to the set of Regulations, "importing" means to "bring or cause to be brought into Singapore by land, water or air from any place which is outside Singapore ..." any goods, even if they are not for purposes of trade. The set of Regulations also does not make any provisions for personal use quantities to be brought into Singapore. Therefore, bringing chewing gum into Singapore, even small quantities for whatever purpose, is technically prohibited. What do you know, Joe? San Luis Obispo, California, is the home of 'Bubble Gum Alley'. What is it? A. An alley with brick walls covered with ABC (already-been-chewed) gum wads. B.The place where bubble gum was invented. C. CleanMostTriv #99 Sound Waves | Hey, Listen to THIS! I was just having fun yelling at you :-) Pete Townshend on iPods “Who guitarist Pete Townshend is warning iPod users they may face hearing loss if they pump up the volume on the devices. “Townshend, 60, said his hearing was irreversibly damaged from using studio headphones, and he now takes 36-hour breaks between recording sessions. The band was known for loud performances. “ "Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it cannot be repaired," Townshend said on his website. "If you use an iPod or anything like it, or your child uses one, you may be OK. But my intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead." Explaination on one of the questions in this show: Water vapor in the air increases this speed slightly. Sound travels faster through warm air than through cold air. This is to be expected because the faster-moving molecules in warm air bump into each other more often and therefore transmit a pulse in less time. For each degree rise in temperature above 0 degrees C, the speed of sound in air increases by 0.6 meters per second. In water, sound travels about four times as fast as it does in air, while in steel, the speed of sound is about fifteen times as great as in air. What do you know, Joe? Why do people often experience ringing in the ears after a loud music concert? A. Some cilia in the ear have been destroyed and are "dying". B. CleanMost Triv: #92 Adult Beverages 2 | Lets Have a Drink Together The Martini, gin and vermouth, is probably the most popular and widely consumed cocktail. Its origin is in dispute, but it dates back to about 1862. The Martini's popularity has waxed and waned, and its recipe has changed considerably over the years. CleanMost Triv: #91 Famous Toys | Toys Toys and MORE Toys Another popular but fabricated story of the yo-yo is that of a centuries old Filipino weapon. The story is about an assailant in a tree with a heavy oversized yo-yo waiting for a victim to pass below. At the critical moment the yo-yo would be hurled at the victim’s head presumably rendering him unconscious. A near miss would still allow the assailant a second opportunity. Physics of the yo-yo make the story improbable. Although there is no question that the toy existed in the Philippines for centuries, as a popular toy, there is no documented evidence that it was ever used as a jungle weapon. The story was popularized by Duncan yo-yo demonstrators in the ‘30s, many of whom were from the Philippines. It was a great story and helped to sell yo-yos, but it has been repeated so often that it has become an urban legend. What do you know, Joe? Despite these connotations, it was chosen to symbolize "caution." Perhaps because it contrasts well with green and red, and is highly visible without being too harsh on the eyes of motorists. CleanMost Triv: #88 Disney Names | Do we all love the Mouse? Although the Mickey Mouse Club TV series premiered on October 3, 1955, the Mouseketeers made their first television appearance on July 17, 1955 - on the ABC broadcast special celebrating the opening of Disneyland. Walt Disney was adamant that the Mouseketeers be regular kids, not actors. Producers searched schools looking for kids with that special spark. The Mousketeers went to school 5 days a week on the Disney lot. Not only did they work 6 days but Sundays were often spent performing for the public. Being a Mousketeer wasn't easy. The Mousketeers became close friends and remain so to this day. Sadly, the show only ran for 3 years and 360 episodes. ABC wanted to run more ads and Walt Disney refused. His contract forbid him from shopping the show to another network. Jimmy Dodd died in 1964 at the too young age of 54. Roy Williams died in 1976. Critics say that the term "reality television" is somewhat of a misnomer and that such shows frequently portray a modified and highly influenced form of reality, with participants put in exotic locations or abnormal situations, sometimes coached to act in certain ways by off-screen handlers, and with events on screen manipulated through editing and other post-production techniques. CleanMost Triv: #86 Birdies | We dig our Animals, So lets take care of them! Why are albatrosses so vulnerable? Albatrosses are exceptionally susceptible to longlining. They can't breed fast enough to cope with the rate at which they are being killed. Other species, with different life cycles, might be able to survive. Why is this so? Naturally, albatrosses are long-lived birds, some living up to 60 years. They only breed once they are fully mature - this can take as long as 12 years. They only produce one chick at a time, and several albatross species only breed every second year. go to link for more info... www.wfu.edu/news/release/2006.10.03.a.php What do you know, Joe? 5. Don't Read this, just download and Play!
Why are you bothering to read this? It's Johnee Bee man! His CrAzY sounds, fun assistants, wacky clips, and most importantly TRIVA questions make up this great show! And he doesn’t just ask questions, then give the answers, Johnee also goes into some fun facts and background. Overall the best short trivia podcast… Never longer than 10 minutes! (well except once, but that was only over by 5 seconds)- So dog-gone-it, quit reading and start downloading!
Johnee Bee .. Weeee
Entertaining and informative! His smooth voice, fun rock songs, random sound effects and not too winded explainations keep you interested and wanting more!
This is fun quick trivia
Each episode is between generally less than 10 minutes, has two questions and the categories are really varied. The neat thing about this is not only is the answer given, but a little background is also given. The sound effects can be a little annoying, but generally they are funny and add to the podcast.
