Game of the year Mass Effect 2 Our final category is “MMO of the year.” Before we get to our personal choices, we want to share some of the choices made by listeners who sent in. Brian a.k.a. Blue Kae My favorite MMO for 2010 is Star Trek Online. While Cryptic's had its share of difficulties, drama, and disappointments, I've been very impressed with their transparency via Engineering Reports, their communication through forums and podcasts, and most importantly how quickly they've improved the game (diplomacy, crafting revamps, featured episodes, and sector space). I can't wait to see what Stahl and his team manage in the next year. Solvanirn's personal MMO of 2010: Guild Wars. Thanks! Todd Edwards I vote for STO because it is the only one that I've had an urge to a) buy, b) subscribe after the 1st month, and c) keep on my system. While all that is true, there are a few reasons: Best ship combat. EVE is too spreadsheety and abstract, POTBS is a close second, but lacks the customization in STO. Innovative ground combat. micromanage a small team. It is a mmo tactical game. Reminds me of what an XCom mmo might be like. /drool Best stories. I love the episodic content. Lots of stories that all fit together with the universe. It isn't an epic tale like a BioWare game, but in an MMO, I want small stories that stand alone, yet go together, i.e. a tv show instead of a movie. Best fit for my niche. I don't have time for epic raids or getting pugs together. I like it because I can get in, have fun, and get out in short order. I can also quit mid quest and jump right back to where I was. Great for when the kid wakes up early from a nap. Beautiful. All the locations, ships, effects, etc. look awesome. Most Trek-like. ;) Coolit My favorite mmo this year, hands down is Darkfall. First let me clear up one thing about Darkfall, it is not filled with griefers. If you walk around alone with a nice gear, you will most likely get attacked and someone else will now own your nice gear. It can suck but it adds an element of excitement and challenge. I normally know when I'm risking my gear and I have about 5 ready bags filled with armor, regs, food weapons and a mount in my bank ready to go. I can make almost everything I wear, wield and ride. I'm not a big fan of doing quests and I don't see any satisfaction in PVP with out risk. A lot of mmo's have added conviences like quick travel, instances and even quest turn in on the fly. There is a market for people who want there adventure on rails but I prefer the realism and freedom Darkfall gives me. Maeve should do more bumpers and giggle more, it really helps sell the show as the serious business it is.
Casual Podcasting at Its Best!
Podcasts are best when the hosts are having fun, and the Multiplaying hosts are having a ball. The chemistry on this show comes out in every episode, and it is genuinely funny. Sometimes I catch myself pulling out paper to write down something that somebody said. They have great guests, they host great topics, and they cover great games. To top it all off, these are podcasters with families, and they find more time to play games, podcast, and share a drink than I can fathom. Somebody needs to stop them before they take over the world.
