Building a Sangha | “In my many conversations with folks who live remotely from the temple probably the question I am asked most often is about building a Sangha, about cultivating a community of people with whom to practice the Dharma with. You all truly understand the value of practicing with others of like minds. Since you all know the benefit of a Sangha and most genuinely desire a Sangha or community to practice with let me move on to how we build a Sangha. First of course you should work closely with a teacher, that can be me if you are interested in practicing in the Nichiren Shu tradition or some other Nichiren Shu priest of your liking. Or you may wish to practice in another tradition and so you should seek out the appropriate teacher.” | 7/31/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jodoe Commemorating the Enlightenment of the Buddha - Dharma Talk 12/12/10 | Dharma Talk recorded live on December 12, 2010. Roughly 3000 years ago a young man, a prince who had lived a life of luxury and comfort took it upon himself to find a way to enable every person to overcome the sufferings of life. According to legend he left his palace and encountered a mother giving birth, an old person suffering from sickness, a person who had died, and a holy man. After these sightings there arose within him a great desire to take it upon himself to lead all mankind to indestructible happiness. This is not to be confused with mere elation at some temporary phenomena, but instead a joy and happiness that can set one free from the afflictions of daily life. After many years denying himself of comfort and even inflicting great depredations upon his body he came to a realization that this could never lead to the solution to life’s problems. It was then he cleaned himself, took a small bowl of porridge milk and began silent meditation under a type of banyan tree that is called pipal. | 12/12/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Perceiving - Dharma Talk 11/28/10 | Dharma Talk recorded live on November 28, 2010. How often do we, in the course of our day, overlook the beauty around us? How often do we also fail to see the Buddha in others and in ourselves? How often do we fail to see the Buddha’s pure land in our own existence? Chapter II of the Lotus Sutra says: “The profound and Wonderful Dharma is difficult to see and difficult to understand.” Chapter II Expedients Notice it says difficult, not impossible. It does take effort on our part to perceive the Wonderful Dharma, we have to make effort. Just as in the story above, we can choose to walk swiftly by without regard to the Dharma in our lives or we can choose to slow down and view our lives as the Buddha teaches us, with great appreciation. | 11/28/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Thanksgiving - Dharma Talk 11/21/10 | Dharma Talk recorded live on November 21, 2010. The day of Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate the bounty of the harvest, a day to celebrate friends and family, a day to ‘give thanks’. It is this the giving of thanks that I would like to talk about briefly today. As Buddhists we understand how important it is to express our gratitude, to give thanks. All of our prayers are in fact an expression of our gratitude for the countless benefits we have received, many without our even asking. When we think of the wonderful gift of the Dharma that we have received we may wonder how can we repay our debt to our teachers or even to the Buddha. In Chapter IV from the Lotus Sutra the Buddha says the following; “When you attain enlightenment infallibly, you will have already repaid the favors I gave you.” | 11/21/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Faith And Belief | When we come to Buddhism and in particular to the teachings of the Lotus Sutra we, even today have very similar feelings about it as those present who heard the teaching directly from the Buddha. We may be amazed, we may like what we hear, we perhaps even have a propensity for belief, and we may even doubt its truth depending upon how we view our own potential. I have experienced that in most people their lack of belief, or their lack of faith is often rooted in their own self doubt, they fail to believe in themselves. Buddhism and Terrorism | Today as we think about those events years ago and what has happened until now we can find clear evidence of the truth that violence breeds only violence. In the past five years more Americans have been killed as a result of our efforts to punish terrorists than were killed on September 11, 2001. Even more innocent people in other countries have been killed. And still there is no end to terrorism. The violence has only led to more violence. | 7/19/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Going in Circles | Frequently people make assessments about the success of a particular activity by how quickly they can move on to another set of activities. Prayer in this instance is about ever deepening our relationship with our faith. Yes, it is true that while we may have specific prayers for things we wish to change or overcome, on a more fundamental level prayer is about enabling us to delve ever deeper into our relationship with the Eternal Buddha and the teachings of the Lotus Sutra. | 7/12/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Daily Service - Dharma Talk Jun 27, 2010 | At its core, our daily practice is about participating in the events that take place in the Lotus Sutra. We are in one sense recreating the actual Sutra in our daily practice, even if it is only an abbreviated form. The heart of our daily service is the recitation of some chapters from the Sutra itself. So it is easy to see that connection to the Sutra, but what about some of the other things we do. Significance of the elements in a Nichiren Shu daily service | 7/3/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

What We Believe - Setsubun - Dharma Talk February 3, 2008 | Today we celebrate Setsubun, which demarcates the division of the seasons, winter and spring. It is customary in Japan to toss beans to drive away Oni or demons. For Buddhist and for many in other religions once we make that decision then we must begin the process of determining how we will act in accordance with that decision. The deeper we internalize that decision the deeper we can go into how we will act. And of course what we end up believing in will also determine how we act. | 7/3/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Time - Dharma Talk May 1, 2009 | Sometimes when we sit before the Honzon of the Eternal Buddha we may be in a hurry, or we may have thoughts about some problem or challenge or even some fun activity that awaits us. Or perhaps in the evening we may be stressing out over something that didn’t go right during the day. We need to remember that we need to recall all the ‘eminations of our own mind’ so that our entire unified being can participate in the joyful expression of faith by reciting the sutra and chanting Odaimoku. | 7/3/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
