Podcast Description
Selected lectures presented by the New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (NECOEM) annual conferences and dinner meetings. Handouts to some of these lectures are available by going to the library section of necoem.org. NECOEM is a not-for-profit, regional component society of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the pre-eminent organization of occupational and environmental physicians in the United States. NECOEM has over 200 physician members and is dedicated to preventing and treating occupational injuries and illnesses. NECOEM provides continuing medical education for its physician members in order to enhance the care that they provide to men and women in the workplace. NECOEM is an advocate for workplace safety, occupational health research, raising public awareness of occupational and environmental health issues, guiding public policy, and recognizing outstanding achievement by individuals in occupational and environmental health. This podcast is provided by NECOEM and ACOEM solely for professional education purposes and is not offered as a substitute for the personal care of a licensed medical professional. CleanWhat Mind Body Medicine Can Do for You and Your Patients | Herbert Besion, MD delivered the 2011 William B. Patterson Memorial Lecture. He is the Director Emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He has authored or co-authroed more than 180 scientific publications and twelve books including The Relaxation Response (1975 and 2000), Timeless Healing: The Power and Biology of Belief (1996), and Relaxation Revolution (2010). He is a pioneer in midn/body medicine and is one of the first western physicians to bring spirituality and healing into medicine. In his 35+ years career, he has defined the relaxation response and continues to lead teaching and research into its efficacy in counteracting the harmful effects of stress. He spent 15 years as corporate medical director for GlaxoSmithKline based in Research Triangle Park, NC. He is the co-author if Physical and Biologiical Hazards of the Workplace, now in its second edition and a basic core text in the ACOEM recommended library. He also co-edited the State of the Arts Review in Occupational Medicine on the Pharmaceutical Industry. He is the author of numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles. CleanThe Challenges of RTW after Hip or Knee Replacement | Daniel Ward, MD is a board certified orthopedic surgeon affiliated with the New England Baptist Hospital, Boston, MA and has performed hundreds of knee and hip joint replacements for many years. He is joined in the panel by James Montana, PT who manages his physical therapy private practice, Precision Health Studio's LLC based in Guilford, CT. He also works as the physical therapy director of St. Francis Occupational Health in Torrington, CT. Laura Sorafine, JD currently serves as labor and employement counsel in addition to being manager for Employee Relations for Boston Medical Center. The panel reviews mutiple medical and legal factors involved in return to work issues for employees following hip and knee replacement surgery. CleanFitness for Duty and ADA Issues in the Compromised Worker | Carolyn Langer, MD, JD, MPH is medical director of Medical Management and Policy at Harvard Pilgram Health Care. In this role, she provides medical leadership for utilization, medical policy, new technology assessment, quaility and other related functions. Dr. Langer is an Instructor at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) where she teaches a graduate course on Occupational Health Law, Policy and Administration and sits on the HSPH Occupational Medicine Residency Advisory Committee. She serves as an Adjunct Instructor in Public Health and Family Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Alan Rodgers, MD: provides physician services and medical directorship for multiple occupational health and employee health clinics in Eastern Massachusetts. The various health care delivery settings he has been involved with inlcude urgent care and occupational health clinics, episodic primary care and urgent care clinics, chronic disease management, health coaching and preventive wellness services. Dr. Rodger currently provides services for Concentra Healthcare Services. 2. Rich Haugen, COHN-S: certfied occupational health nurse working at Proctor and Gamble/Gillete Compnay and is also the Health Service Manager of the Vibrant Living Health Center located with the World Shaving Headquarters in South Boston, MA. 3. CleanChildhood Lead Poisoning | Paul Hunter is the Director of the Department of Public Health's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program based in Boston, MA. He is repsonsible for all aspects of program management including regulatory development, case management, environmental intervention and data analysis. He has more that twenty years experience in lead poisoning prevention and child health. He has worked closely with DOHCD and Mass Housing on the implementation of state and federally funded lead abatement programs. CleanIntroduction to Reactor Safety | Mr. Tom Shedlosky has over forty years of experience in the nulcear industry. While employed by the Nuclear Regulatory commission, he assisted formulating regulatory policy and contributed to developing portions of its reactor safety review program. He has a broad background that includes reactor operations, maintenance, power plant design and construction, root-cause analysis and risk analysis. He has recently focused on developing methods of risk reduction and formulating startegies to reduce the consequences of severe reactor accidents. CleanBasic Radiation Principles and Medical Management Principles for Victims of Radiation Accidents | Joseph Albanese, PhD currently serves as Assistant Professor of Therapeutic Radiology and Pharmacology for Yale New Haven Health. He established and currently supervises the State of Connecticut Biodosimetry Laboratory which provides radiation dose estimates for medical triage and diagnoses in the event of a large scale radiological casualty incident. He received his PhD in Experimental Medicine from McGill University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University, where he focused on understanding the effects of ionizing radiation on intracellular communication and gene expression. He has provided subject matter expertise and oversight for the development of clinical and response guidelines for radiation emergencies intended to provide clinicians in healthcare delivery facilities with a startegy for responding to large scale emergencies involving catastrophic radiological incidents. CleanShiftwork and Sleep: Optimizing Health, Safety and Performance | Phyllis C. Zee, MD, PhD is Professor of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Physiology as well as the Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. She has published more than 120 articles and chapters in the area of sleep medicine and neuroscience. Her reserach has focused on the effects of age on sleep and circadian rhythms, genetic regulation of circadian sleep disorders, behavioral interventions to improve sleep and performance, and the relationship between sleep and metabolic and cardiovascular disease. In her lecture, she explains the effects of sleep restriction on overall health and occupational perfromance and safety while reviewoing the complex pathophysiology of sleep and circadian rhythm. She also discusses the prevelance and health ramifications of shift work sleep disorders (SWSD).
