This is your friendly neighborhood controller, keeping this segment going for those of you who love tactics. Usually, we highlight the move or series of maneuvers that most lead to victory. However, this time around, no play really stuck out. Instead I would like to focus on why my allies continuously make me look malicious by running into controlling zones on their own volition. That’s right, no forced movement, no rhyme, no reason. Here we go: In this fight we ambushed two demons and three cultists from all sides (Picture 1). Tactical use of a storm pillar interdicted enemy movement against Errador and Mikail, funneling half of their forces into Harne lockdown. While Camulus held his own on the northeastern front, Timaeus was kept busy protecting our rear and healing when necessary (Picture 2). Okay, chock it up to dwarven impetuousness. Mikail then moves into an enemy square within the cloud to activate one of his assassin powers, damaging himself in the process (Picture 3). Why? Total collateral damage to this point is only 30. Timaeus is wincing. (http://www.nerdbound.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Cult-Meeting-Exhibit-C.jpg) Round three brings more unnecessary damage as Errador teleports into the cloud to gain concealment. Really? Total collateral is 46 now. (http://www.nerdbound.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Cult-Meeting-Exhibit-D.jpg) During round 4, we mop up the southeastern front and Empyron moves the stinking cloud towards the remaining resistance. After Errador and Mikail wipe out the last vestiges of hostility, Harne decides to charge through the stinking cloud…again. He could have merely delayed one position in initiative order to avoid it, but at this point, it’s funny. Timaeus is no longer laughing, as these wreckless adventurers make his job of healing untenable. Total collateral damage is 63. Luckily, the battle ended next round with no more foolishness, but keeping in mind that we are only level 8, 63 damage would wipe almost any of us out, including Empyron almost twice over. The thief, however, is not intimidated or compelled to talk; membership at the dock, he demonstrates, is signed in blood … Empyron’s Keys to the Battle Empyron’s game changing moment for the fight in the dock warehouse against the thief, Beagle, and his allies. Howdy loyal listeners. This is your friendly neighborhood controller, back by popular demand. Thanks to Buddhafrog and Shadowalker for the feedback from the last one. Today we will detail the move that saved our party (and specifically Timaeus) from total disaster. 4 rounds into our battle, Timaeus had fallen due to inhaling unnamed noxious fumes. Rather than cast blame and launch an official investigation into whether it constituted friendly fire, our hero, Harne, sprang into action. He initiated a “Come and get it” attack, pulling off 4 enemies from other targets, including one standing over the unconscious body of Timaeus. This effectively locked down 80% of the remaining foes at the time, at least 2 of which were best suited to ranged fighting. During the first round, a surprise attack by Errador and strategically placed Stinking Cloud affected a mass exodus of enemies from the room…right into the oncoming traffic of Harne and Camulus. With these foes bottled up, our attention turned to the second front, and Timaeus bravely holding it down alone. Fast forward to round 4. With Timaeus down, and the enemies spread throughout our ranks (due to the enemy breaking ranks, not vice versa), Harne pulls the enemies towards him with Come and get it. This power does not require an attack roll, making it especially valuble against tough opponents. With disaster averted, Empyron gave Timaeus a Healing word allowing the cleric to get back into the fray with combat advantage, and effectively blocked any hope of escape to regroup. Tactics 102: Drawing ranged enemies or casters into the thick of battle, forcing them to take opportunity attacks should they try to escape, will quickly reduce enemy ranks and preserve healing surges. However, my key to victory today goes to Harne, our diminutive defender, for his relentless pursuit of the enemy. From our initial positions near the entrance, Harne chased the shadow of our mercurial adversary across the treasure chamber in a bid to lock him down, which he ultimately did in a most strategic position. Empyron's Keys to the Battle Empyron’s game changing moment for Episode 31, battle outside the Lemurian ruined city against the lizard clan sentries Greetings loyal listeners, this is your friendly neighborhood controller. In this segment, I will highlight the tactical move or series of maneuvers that most led to party victory, or in the rare case of a DM Neil victory, total party wipe. This battle was actually over even before it started, without the need for any fancy tactics. Errador, played by Jason, made a series of successful sneak checks in order to get into position. Normally, splitting the party is downright foolish, but if you can get enemy tanks to move right past your striker unnoticed, he can really mess up that artillery. The artillery in question for this battle consisted of two lizardmen blowgunners and a lizard shaman. Beginning positions are documented in the photograph, with Errador in a very dangerous, but concealed position top center. During the first turn, the enemy front-rankers, in the upper right and left corners, made a beeline towards the remaining party members pictured bottom center. This allowed Errador to strike against the enemy rear-lines from his covered position. Normally, being outnumbered 3 to 1 is a big disadvantage, but back to back critical hits against one blowgunner (with at-wills) by first Errador, and then Empyron (pictured in our first cartoon) dealt a devastating 31 and 20 damage respectively. Once their rear-lines went down, and we had localized numerical superiority up front, it was a matter of mopping up remaining enemy positions from three sides, with Harn completely taking one of their attackers out of the action, while getting his licks in. Alexander gave huge incentives for Camulus and Empyron to knock off the remaining foes. Tactics 101: Any time you can get separation between enemy warriors and shooters/casters, while being able to exploit the gap, the odds are shaved in your favor. Some were captured, others killed, and others lost … Many “Talents”, as they would be called, began wreaking havoc across the globe. Governments did their best to combat them, but nothing proved effective. Then came that fateful day, two months into the chaos, when an 11-year old boy protected his mother from a rogue talent by unleashing a massive bolt of lightning and tearing through the fiend’s chest. The playing field was evened, and the “Age of Talents” began. Dayman (Ian B.), AKA “The Specimen,” was the robotic guardian of an alien “prison ship” transporting disembodied criminals within containment units. When the ship crashed, these inmates were released from their prisons and forced to either usurp the bodies of bystanders, wiping away their mind, or dissipate into nothingness. Nightman (Ian M.), an energy being capable of inhabiting various constructs, was among them. Dayman awakened several years later and was found by the Talent and Mutant Neutralization Team (TMNT). Acknowledging his potential, they offered the robot full rights in exchange for his help nullifying dangerous superhuman threats. Nightman escaped and took possession of the body of a young bystander, in time integrating into the local culture as the peculiar “Lord Baltimore.” Max Power (Nick), was a once a famous actor. This all changed the day he was caught cheating on his wife, a burn victim. He was blacklisted by the film industry and publicly shunned. One day while attending a sports game, Max was attacked by a drunk ripping out and hurling chairs. As one of the projectiles came flying at Max, the former star blasted it away, through sheer will … The world was watching; this was his chance. Max defeated the fiend after a stunning showdown of superpowers and soon became the symbol for the responsible use of talents. Currently, as spokesperson for the TMNT, he fights to keep the world safe from unregistered, dangerous Talents. Aaroniero “Aaron” Arruruerie (Jose) was a young man who developed his powers soon after the first Talent emerged. Being one of the original bystanders at ground zero, his life was saved when local outcast Billy "Freaky" Fryer unexpectedly pushed him out of the way of a blast. Billy’s head was struck by a crackle of energy and the hero went seemingly insane … While Billy was sent away to an institution, Aaron’s fate remained unchanged. The kid hid his powers and never registered with the TMNT. Aaron comes from a particularly rough neighborhood known for its mafia connections and it’s his goal to stay out of their sights and keep his family safe. Mark Cooper (Jason), AKA “The Hunter,” is a masked vigilante hell-bent on avenging the murder of his family at the hands of the mutant psychopath Chronos. Once, after running through the streets to escape the madman’s rampage with wife and child, their grip suddenly loosens. Mark turned around to find his family slaughtered, blood smeared everywhere. As Chronos readied to finish him, a deep cold permeated the alley as ice began coating everything in sight. Our brave adventurers awaken to ominous memories from a few hours before. After much … persuasion … their battered prisoner had finally revealed his kind’s sinister plan: a “goblin hulk” would soon be treading on their colony’s shores. Dreading the worst, our heroes spring into action and … handle some other errands first. Empyron pays another visit to Falstaff, plantation owner, in an attempt to make him the ultimate offer for one in his trade: an unlimited source of water. An ideal proposal it seems, certainly, until the farmer realizes the sly wizard had also been tempting his competitor … Does the mum mage close the deal or does he buy the farm … or milk the cow … or choke the chicken …? Alexander visits Mordecai, the two clergymen now part of a holy alliance. After standard niceties/double entendres, Alexander begins outlining what appears to be foundations for much grander ploys … Just what does the narcissistic youth mean when he speaks of “Twin Spires”? (Hint: It is not the second entry of a fantasy trilogy.) And almost as soon as Erador makes his way back to the colony, the importer/exporter must answer to the law. The tacit adventurer is accused of stealing a mysterious artifact … one that just happens to be in his possession … Will the cunning profiteer prove his innocence or will he be read his Miranda rights? And, more interestingly, where is Miranda? Later, the boys finally find the time to visit the captain. wonderful!
This is a really wonderful actual play podcast. I've listened to far too many and this rates as the very best along side of icosahedrophelia. It's so good that I will use a version of this "New World" game in my next campaign. The story roleplaying is the best available on the internet - hilarious and clever. Oh, and I'm in South Korea and I expect a shoutout!
Fantastic Podcast
A thoroughly enjoyable, high-quality RPG podcast. I had entered NerdBound expecting DND, but the Fear Itself session was highly intriguing. Highly recommended for those somewhat initiated with RPGs, but anybody can enjoy the antics of this crazy group.
Interpretive Dance FTW!
I just discovered this podcast and am stoked that I have 45 more episodes to listen to! If you enjoy no-nonsense D&D play sessions...then you may want to find another podcast. However, if you're looking for a great blend of combat, role-play, and bizarre side conversations then NerdBound is the podcast for you.
