Loving it!
On chapter 2 now and loving it! Does it really only have 9 chapters?
Great, imaginative story that is a really excellent listen!
Most of us read Mark Twain in school and the characters and their stories stay with us. Never Been There does an outstanding job of imagining what happens to Tom and Huck when they grow up and get older and bringing the listener into their world.
It was easy for me to remember how I related to Twain's characters when I first read the stories in school. Likewise it was great relating to the characters' current predicaments and personal regrets. It has been about fifteen years since I first read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, so it was easy for me to relate to this story because about fifteen years elapses between the end of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the start of Never Been There.
Twain's old characters are recognizable in their "nearly-grown-up" age and the new characters imagined for this story fit well with the old characters. The story moves along quickly and the action helps the characters develop well for the listener. There are plenty of good descriptions and great dialogues that make the story come alive for listeners.
The actors are very talented and do a good job reading emotion and excitement into the action, and uniqueness into their characters. There is plenty of drama and humor in the story and it is structured so that each chapter really leaves you in suspense about what will happen next. After finishing chapter eight I described the story to a friend thusly "Lonesome Dove + Mark Twain + The Wire + Boba Fett"
This is the type of serialized story that podcasts and radio plays were invented for. The only disappointment comes when you realize that the story has come to an end. It is well worth your listening time.
