Episode 2: Podcasts from the New York Open Center Workshop | The following podcast was recorded during a one day workshop titled "Integrating the Shadow: Hiding and Seeking on the Spiritual Path" held on October 30, 2011 at the New York Open Center. This workshop ran from 10AM to 5:30PM and the podcast episodes will be published over the next few weeks in 1-hour (approximate) installments. The audio quality reflects the raw and unedited nature of the content and has been minimally processed. We apologize that it is less than studio quality this time around. The workshop description: For many seekers, the spiritual path is considered to be a movement toward “the light” and does not include the equally important process of delving into, identifying and integrating repressed aspects of our psyche (the shadow). Today we will explore this often overlooked aspect of spiritual work and examine how we often fool ourselves using spirituality to hide our shadow (from ourselves and others) rather than honestly facing ourselves. Through four guided meditations through the day, lecture, experiential exercises, group discussion, and Q&A sessions, we will examine some of the common masks we use to hide our shadow side and ways we can begin to productively integrate these aspects of our psyches. New episode installments will follow every week. Relationship as Yoga: Podcast #2 | Relationship is the ultimate and most arduous yoga. If we understand yoga to mean union, then relationship is a direct path to that union. A truly intimate relationship can be a powerful vehicle for spiritual development. It can be a safe place where we learn about ourselves while we dig beneath our socially accepted masks and learn what makes us tick. And yet there is one word that best describes the response we all have toward intimate relationship: terror. In this workshop aspects and issues that keep us from entering into or fully engaging in relationships are examined. This workshop was recorded on October 25, 2009 at the Downtown Yogaworks in NYC. This is the second half (Episode 2, 1:03:04 running time, 29.5MB) of the two-hour workshop. In email or via RSS, you may use the following link to access/download the podcast directly to your computer (warning: approximately 29.5MB): http://abdiassadi.com/podcasts/abdi_assadi_yogaworks_v1_episode2.mp3 Or, you may access this podcast episode via your iTunes application: Launch iTunes and Subscribe to the Podcast | 1/4/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Maharathi - "Outstanding Warrior"
I'm biased because I consider Abdi a dear friend as well as a teacher/ally, counselor, oracle, shaman, warrior, and healer. But it's this close relationship that exemplifies an important aspect of the great teachings - that a personal teacher/guide/ally is an important relationship to develop and maintain, while not blindly handing-over your personal power or capabilities of discernment. Abdi is truly honest, insightful, and gifted (and humble) – and can help us all see our issues more clearly – and more importantly, illuminate our blind spots.
thank you thank you
such wise simple words. i love how much he acknowledges the beauty of the questions that people pose. his honesty about his own vulnerable humanity is phenomenal. it is inspires me so much to be straight up about my shadow and all parts of me as I work to accept fully who i am...then i can give the gift of accepting others! thank you thank you thank you abdi
No Joke!
I listened to this podcast this morning and literally went through the process as if I was there. This is not a lightweight experience, food for thought, or just one more thing to do! I have known Abdi for over ten years and still I was stopped in my tracks- thank God- and stripped bare of my pretenses. The questioning and deliberate action of being honest, humble and vulnerable is brought to the table with a wonderful alchemy of love and tenderness. This kind of work is rare and we are so lucky to find it. I do not take it for granted, in this moment I hold it dear to my heart and pray moment by moment to not forget, and most importantly, forgive myself when I do.
