Tour of California: Stage 1 Files, Interviews, Videos and More | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/saxotocstage1small.png)The 2010 Amgen Tour of California is off to a great start, with HTC-Colombia's Mark Cavendish winning Stage 1 in the state capital of Sacramento. The day certainly started off fast as smaller domestic teams tried to establish a breakaway in the opening miles. All the pressure was on HTC today as they have the best sprinter in the race with Mark Cavendish and in the end he proved he certainly was the fastest man. As the race entered the final finishing circuits around the state capital in Sacramento the race was well under control by the sprinter's teams. This is where Saxo Bank's Jakob Fuglsang (http://home.trainingpeaks.com/races/2010-tour-of-california-files-team-saxo-bank/team-saxo-bank-taking-the-lead.aspx) sprung to life and helped his team sprinter, Juan Jose Haedo, move up to the front. Jakob recorded his highest CP20 value in the final 20 minutes of racing at 327w (348w normalized). Check out his SRM power data here. (http://home.trainingpeaks.com/races/2010-tour-of-california-files-team-saxo-bank/stage-one-2010.aspx) Another rider who shared his race data is Team Fly V australia's Jay Thomson, who set his highest CP20 value in the first hour of racing as he tried to bridge the gap to the early break. In the end HTC-Columbia only allowed the 4-man move get up the road to a maximum gap of four minutes before they brought it back within 20km's to go to the finish. Jay ended up taking it relatively easy until the final 30kms when he started working for his team sprinter Johnathan Cantwell who placed 5th on the stage. The roads were flat and slightly windy entering Sacramento but for the most part safe, until the finishing circuits. Several riders crashed with under three kilometers to go including some big names such as George Hincapie and Stuart O'Grady. Check out a video interview between Dirk Friel and Jay Thomson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaEk6Hyv-vA) Today's race to Santa Rosa will be even more action packed as the riders must climb some severe climbs near the finish in wine country. The Tour of California won't be won on Monday, but it certainly can be lost. Listen to a podcast discussion between Dirk Friel and Hunter Allen about the upcoming stage and yesterday's events. (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/HunterandDirkStage1ToC.wav) Dirk and Hunter discussed the contrast between Jay Thomson's approach to the race yesterday versus Jakub Fulgerson's strategy. "It was kind of opposing stories: you have Jay Thomson trying to get across to the early break, in the first 30 minutes of the race the guy was putting out 1300 watts... on the other hand Jakub Fulgerson was really trying to take it easy as much as possible yesterday until the circuits where he was helping out his team sprinter J.J. Haedo who ended up getting second, so that was good for those guys." Stay tuned for more race files, interviews, and videos this week! Giro d’Italia: Chris Anker Sorensen of Team Saxo Bank Takes Stage Win | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/chrissorensen.jpg)Across the pond, Team Saxo Bank's Chris Anker Sorenson won the mountain stage to Terminillo at the Giro d'Italia, after recovering from a broken collar bone just 7 weeks ago. Team performance manager Bobby Julich spoke with Dirk Friel at the Tour of California about how Chris used TrainingPeaks and WKO+ to help him make this miraculous recovery. "I've been working really closely with Chris, monitoring him closely on TrainingPeaks and WKO+ software," said Bobby. "He broke his collarbone in the last stage of the Vuelta a Cataluna, he ended up finishing the stage but he definitely broke his collarbone so he had to take 5 or 6 days completely off the bike... he had the injury right as he was coming onto a major peak, so he was going to take a break anyway, but it really shows how you can monitor a rider even during a period like that, get into their head, monitor their data... he only lost about 5% of his condition over that period, and when I was able to point that out to him it really improved his morale." Listen to the full interview below (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/Julich_CAK_interview.wav), and stay tuned for more race files, interviews, and videos this week! USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships: Ben Chaddock of Whitman | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/whitmancyclingsmall.jpg)Ben Chaddock of Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington discusses his cycling team's chances at Nationals in Wisconsin May 7-9, the new cycling class that the team started to help riders become familiar with the sport's terminology and techniques, and how the team uses TrainingPeaks and WKO+ to keep their training on track. Listen to the whole podcast below, and read on for a few excerpts. Discussing the cycling class that the team started, Ben is enthusiastic about how it has helped the riders. "We started a cycling class this year, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which goes through absolutely everything that you need to know. We had a week and a half of Computrainer testing and we went through every single person's results and looked at zones they should train in more, zones they should train in less... and that stuff's all logged in on TrainingPeaks, so in the future if you want to go back and see one of the previous tests for a team mate, you can just go right in there and grab it." In addition to a strong men's team, ever since Mara Abbott showed up on the Whitman College cycling team, the woman's team has also been excellent. "We have the strongest woman's team program in the nation, no question about it," says Ben. "Looks like we're going to have a full squad on the women's team this year for Nationals, if we have everyone get through these last few races, and we also have a lot of younger women, which is also very important." Aside from using the software for the team, Ben enjoys using it himself and with his coach. "Having the PowerTap and being able to look at the data in WKO+ helps me understand how to improve from year to year. Sometimes your coach can't be available so you have to come up with it yourself, so it's very important that you understand the reasoning behind your training program so you can figure it out for yourself." Happy training and best of luck to the whole team at Nationals! Tour of the Gila Stage 1: Phil Zajicek Post Race Interview | Stage 1: Silver City - Mogollon 151km 1 Levi Leipheimer (Team Mellow Johnny's) 3:48:18 2 Tom Danielson (DZ Nuts) :10 3 Cesar Grajales (Ouch-Bahati Foundation Pro) :16 4 Phil Zajicek (Fly V Australia) (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/philgila.png)Phil Zajicek of team Fly V australia placed 4th in stage 1 of the Tour of the Gila in Silver City, NM. Even though this is the first stage of the event it is always one that can ruin the chances of all but a few top climbers. This premier stage finishes with an 8km Category 1 climb known as the Mogollon. Zajicek is one of the top favorites in this years event as he placed 3rd overall in the 2009 Tour of Gila just behind Leipheimer and Lance Armstrong. Zajicek has been managing his training through TrainingPeaks products for three years and was kind enough to conduct a phone interview with Dirk Friel of TrainingPeaks just after the stage one finish. Zajicek explains how he placed fourth on the stage and the tactics that played out in the final crucial miles. He also discusses how the Tour of the Gila is an important event as he prepares for the Tour of California later in May. Stay tuned to TrainingPeaks for more interviews throughout the Tour of the Gila. TrainingPeaks will also gain behind the scenes access to Team Saxo Bank and Fly V Australia during the Amgen Tour of California May 16-23rd. Paris-Nice Stage 6: Team Saxo Bank’s Bobby Julich Comments on Chris Anker Sorensen’s Form and Race Data | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/300St6PN2010.C.A.Sorensen.png)If you are a fan of pro cycling you will recognize the name of Danish pro cyclist Chris Anker Sorensen of team Saxo Bank. Sorensen is well known for being a very valuable teammate of Andy Schleck in the 2009 Tour de France. Schleck finished second in last year’s Grande Tour in large part to the strong work of Sorensen in the mountain stages. If you were following the TrainingPeaks Blog last July you know how we posted Sorenson’s SRM power data after each day’s stage. If you missed Sorensen’s 2009 Tour de France SRM power data you can see it all here. (http://home.trainingpeaks.com/races/2009-tour-de-france-files.aspx) In preparation for the 2010 Tour de France, Sorensen’s first big race of the season was the Paris-Nice stage race which just wrapped up Sunday along the southern coast of France. The queen stage which worried most of the riders was Saturday’s 220km stage 6 between Peynier - Tourrettes-sur-Loup, France. Another name fans may recognize is past Tour de France podium finisher and current Team Saxo Bank Rider Development manager, Bobby Julich. Julich was kind enough to share Chris Anker Sorensen’s SRM power file from Saturday’s “mega” Paris-Nice Stage. Julich relies upon TrainingPeaks to keep up to date on race and training data from Team Saxo Bank riders. Stage 6 of Paris-Nice was a very important day in Sorensen’s preparation for this year’s Tour de France. To view Chris Anker Sorensen’s Paris-Nice stage 6 file visit http://tpks.ws/ufnB (http://tpks.ws/ufnB) Below are Julich’s thoughts and interpretation of Sorensen’s current form and race data: Chris did a great ride yesterday (Saturday) taking into account how hard Paris-Nice has been this year. The weather has been a factor with freezing conditions that tax the body in ways that no one can predict. The average speed has been impressive as well throughout the entire race. Anyone that finishes Paris-Nice should be proud of their efforts! Chris got into a very impressive group of motivated and strong riders. This group of 24 were never allowed more than 2 minutes because there were a few dangerous riders on GC, but pressed on throughout the stage. I can assure you that this was a difficult day for the entire peleton which is reflected quite well in his ‘IF’ of .85! Even with almost a week of hard racing in his legs, Chris was able to hit season peak values in his CP6 and CP20. This was a special day for me because it was my first day behind the wheel of the 2nd car. I was able to follow the group for much of the day and had a front row seat to the action in the break. It was quite exciting for me, but hope that I did a good job for Chris. Driving the Director Sportif car is not exactly my cup of tea, but it was good practice for me since I will be helping out Bjarne with this same task in the Tour of California this year. Chris started this race with a very good TSB (Training Stress Balance) and this is why I believe he is able to be in the front on such a hard stage. It will be interesting to see how he recovers from his efforts of yesterday (Saturday) going into the final stage. No matter the outcome on the final day, I believe that Chris has done a great race and will benefit from these efforts in future races.” Bobby | 3/14/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Bobby Julich of Team Saxo Bank Discusses TrainingPeaks, Paris-Nice and More | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/TeamSaxoBank_logo_200.jpg) Bobby Julich, Team Saxo Bank Rider Development Manager, discusses Paris-Nice and explains how the use of TrainingPeaks helps the riders to better prepare for their races. Listen to the whole interview below, and read on for some of the highlights. Bobby relies on TrainingPeaks so he can more objectively evaluate how his riders are feeling. "I think that's the best thing that I get out of TrainingPeaks software, just seeing if they're really fatigued. So much of that you can overcome with how hard you are mentally or how focused you are, but it doesn't really lie, what your body feels, it's very very accurate, and I think that the Training Stress Balance (http://home.trainingpeaks.com/articles/cycling/normalized-power-intensity-factor-training-stress-score.aspx) is what all these guys are starting to use." Regarding Paris-Nice, which starts this coming Sunday, March 7th, Bobby is confident that his team will do well as usual. "Our goal is definitely to have Frank Schleck where he was last year, which is on the podium, he finished in second place. This year we also have Jens Voigt going there who's riding very very strong, Gustav Larsson, Jakob Fuglsang will be there, we definitely have a great team going to the race." | 3/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Tour Down Under Stage 1 & 2: More videos, files, and interviews! | The Tour Down Under is off to an exciting start, with Colombia's Andre Greipel in the lead as the winner of the first two stages and Team Sky's Greg Henderson a close second. Both teams organized powerful lead-out trains at the end of the each stage as part of the effort to catch the breakaway groups that on the second day included Fly V australia's David Kemp, riding in this race for the UniSA-Australian National team. Watch the video of the finishing sprint at Stage 2: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLT1pd2FvY8) (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/kempstage2TdU.png)Stage 2 unfolded in similar fashion to Stage 1, with a main break-away group caught by the peloton before the first intermediate sprint but then reforming, led by David Kemp, to stay in front of the peloton until the approach to the final sprint. Click here to view David Kemp's file from Stage 1 (http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/4KAOMYNVXJELALA5Z5O3K3JPWM) Listen to Dirk Friel of TrainingPeaks interview David Kemp after the finish of Stage 1 (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/stage1DavidKemp.WAV) "I think it went pretty much to plan, from our race tactics. Basically we wanted to put someone in the move, and I raced really aggressively early, went with the first couple of moves, looked like it was going to stick... then Tim Roe got up the road with two other guys, so it sort of worked perfectly in line with what we wanted." In Stage 2, Kemp broke away up the Old Checker Hill Rd climb to keep his teammate Tim Roe in the King of the Mountains classification lead. “I was definitely just going for a stage win,” said Kemp on CyclingNews. (http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/santos-tour-down-under-upt/stage-2/results) “I wasn’t that interested in the King of the Mountain, I was just taking the points off of the other two guys to keep Tim in the jersey." “Kemp’s ride in Stage 2 earned him the Most Aggressive Rider's jersey for the day," said team Fly V australia owner Chris White. "The jersey is a great honour for David.” Click here to view Kemp's file from Stage 2 (http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/TA4FUXSLVR27ETWJWA5PNHVJBM), and read more about the race on Velonews. Tour Down Under: Video, Interviews, Photos, and Files | The 2010 Tour Down Under kicked off yesterday with the Cancer Council Helpline Classic in Adelaide, Australia. A small breakaway group including Lance Armstrong managed to stay in front of the peloton (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-eGWgQzDLU) for a surprisingly long stretch of the race, but in the end Team Sky dominated with a strong team effort in the final two laps, leading out team leader Greg Henderson for the win. "It was obviously a tremendous team effort, I can't say enough for my teammates," said Greg Henderson in an interview with Dirk Friel of TrainingPeaks after the race (http://www.clickcaster.com/items/dirk-friel-interviews-greg-henderson-of-team-sky-at-the-2010-tour-down-under). "The speed in which they delivered me to the line was incredible... It was just nice to have that feeling, to be at the back of a train that's going at warp speed, it's a tremendous feeling." Click here for an interview with Greg Henderson (http://www.clickcaster.com/items/dirk-friel-interviews-greg-henderson-of-team-sky-at-the-2010-tour-down-under) (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Kemp_TDU10_Crit.png)Team Fly V australia has also been enjoying a good group dynamic, thanks to the training camp on the Gold Coast they were able to enjoy for the week before the race. David Kemp of Team Fly V described the group dynamic to Friel (http://www.clickcaster.com/items/dirk-friel-interviews-david-kemp-of-team-fly-v-australia-at-the-2010-tour-down-under): "It's been really good Dirk, just to get the whole team together for the first time, so to see everyone for the 2010 season together, meshing, and just getting to know each other, building that mateship... without that I think it's hard for a team to gel, so I think we've got an advantage over the other teams who haven't really had a chance to get together yet." Check out David Kemp's file from the race here (http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/QRDW3OC62LCDZEQUAAS3PSSY3A), and listen to the interview here. (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/DavidKempAirportInt.WAV) (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/allenlimaustraliasmall.JPG)Aside from the group dynamic, another important consideration for training is the temperature difference between January training in the northern hemisphere and racing in the middle of the southern summer. Allen Lim of Team Radioshack described the methods the team has been using (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/AllenLim.WAV) to help prepare Lance Armstrong for Australia and ultimately for France in July. "We're taking this opportunity right now between Hawaii and Australia to really think about the heat for July. Being down under is a really great opportunity because it's summer here and so it allows us to think about what we need to do to prepare for the summer, especially with respect to thermal regulation and hydration which are two really important aspects of a performance especially at this level." "You can see a lot about how someone is adapting to heat by looking at core temperatures in a very hot environment. What you start to see is that the suffering capacity of the body to deal with heat is a lot stronger, so it takes a lot longer at the same temperature before his core temperature starts to rise because things like his sweat rate improve, his plasma bulion expands because of the exposure to the heat, so all things that help keep him cooler under stress." Listen to the interview with Allen Lim here. (http://www.clickcaster.com/items/dirk-friel-interviews-allen-lim-of-team-radioshack-at-the-2010-tour-down-under) Read more about the race on CyclingNews (http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/cancer-council-helpline-classic-none/results) and on Velonews, (http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/01/news/sky-nails-cancer-council-helpline-classic-with-1-2-finish_102439) and check back on our blog later this week for more possible updates! | 1/18/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

From Biggest Loser to Ironman Finisher – TrainingPeaks Interviews Matt Hoover | Matt Hoover wants more. He wants to be more than a winner of the Biggest Loser TV show, where he met his wife who also placed third. Last Saturday Matt crossed the finish line of the Ironman in Hawaii in a time of 17hrs and 3 minutes, but he admits that by not finishing within the required 17hrs, ”I’m not an official Ironman, but I crossed the finish line. I want that little medal that says you’re an official Ironman. I have to do another Ironman.” (http://prod.trainingpeaks.com/newsletter/Blog/MattHooverbyCruse_RBC60701_small.jpg)TrainingPeaks caught up with Matt while he was relaxing with his family in Hawaii a few days after the Ironman. Listen to his inspiring journey from not being able to swim one length of a swimming pool, to surviving a 2.4mile swim in the open ocean. A 112-mile bike was next, and finally listen to how Matt struggled through the run and only allowed himself to stop once to tie his shoes! This audio interview (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/TrainingPeaksinterviewsBiggestLos.m4a) will provide an amazing insight into Matt’s journey to complete the world’s toughest one-day event. You’ll also hear in his own words some of the secrets of his success and how to apply them to your own life experiences. Matt was teased and tortured throughout his 17hr Ironman where at times he was flying along effortlessly, and at other times nearly forced to abandon, but he always kept moving. “We don’t know what our best is because we quit before we get there. Keep pushing and keep fighting. Your body is capable of doing so much for you, and you owe it to your body to take care of it. I’m going to treat my body the way it needs to be treated.” No matter how hard the race became Matt remained focused knowing he was well prepared by his coach, Jim Vance of TrainingBible Coaching. “I was 100% confident in that day. When I started that race there wasn’t even a question that I wasn’t going to finish. If I hadn’t of had Jim Vance, TrainingBible Coaching and TrainingPeaks I wouldn’t have even gotten out of the water. I did what he had asked of me and it was time to perform,” Matt explained. Matt met his wife, Suzy, on the Biggest Loser season two. Now Suzy is also planning to participate in triathlons. Matt was proud to say “My wife is going to be doing an Irongirl. This wasn’t a one-time thing for us. We’re going to be doing this the rest of our lives as far as we’re concerned.” Matt expressed his appreciation for having TrainingPeaks to use throughout his training, “Thanks for the tools. I know I wouldn’t even have been able to get as closed as I did to finishing on-time had I not had your web site (TrainingPeaks.com).” Read more about Matt's coach Jim Vance and TrainingBible Coaching here. Tom Danielson wins Mt Evans hill climb by 5 minutes | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/tomdanielson.jpg) Tom Danielson sent out a tweet shortly after finishing today's Mt. Evans Hill Climb saying, "Killed Mt Evans today in 1:42:09 and won by 5 minutes. My best performance on this Mtn for sure." Danielson missed breaking his own record from 2004 by only 49 seconds. But in order to get that close, he used his 2004 Garmin GPS file downloaded from his TrainingPeaks account and loaded onto his Garmin Edge 705 as a rabbit to keep him on record breaking pace. Danielson also had help from Danny Summerhill who did an "amazing job", but as Danielson's sole "partner in crime" in the end he had to rely on his Garmin to keep him on pace. As it was he still lost 2:30 in the flat part and had a tough time towards the top due to the headwind. Altogether Danielson was very happy with today's race which shows he is right on track in his preparation for the Vuelta as he discussed with TrainingPeaks Dirk Friel (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/2009/07/garmin-slipstream-rider-and-trainingpeaks-member-tom-danielson-prepares-to-race-up-mt-evans.html) a few days ago. | 7/19/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Race Files and Interview – Stage 4: Tour of California | The cyclists racing the 2009 Tour of California finally saw the sun today for the first time in 5 days. However, the more pleasant weather didn't mean the racing got any easier. (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/kjellcarlstrom-bike-200-thumb.jpg)Kjell Carlstrom (pictured to the left) on the Liquigas pro tour team described the first 90 minutes of today's Stage 4 as "like a Tour de France start. Flat out. Really intense. It was quite hard. There will be a lot of tired guys tonight." Click here to listen (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/KjellCarlstromInterviewafterStag.WAV) (http://www.clickcaster.com/trainingpeaks)to the full interview with Kjell Carlstrom. (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/kjell-file-viwer-650-stage-4.png) Kjell Carlstrom provided his day's race file tracked with his SRM power meter and uploaded to TrainingPeaks. Click here to view Kjell's race (http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/5BDIZYUVSAED7AKP6TANSSUHGM ). (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/gl-tss-cp20-cp4-to-stage-4-4701.png)Once again, Team Saxo Bank's Gustav Larsson (The green bars represent his daily Training Stress Score (TSS) values, the yellow lines are the daily intensity factor, the red line is the daily mean maximal 20 minute (normalized power), and the blue line is the daily mean maximal 4 minute (normalized power) values. ) has uploaded his SRM power meter to TrainingPeaks and provided his File Viewer link to provide a glimpse into the effort and power required to race today's stage. View Gustav's race here (http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/NCX46FA25552ZVCUJ46XN4ETEA ). Or download his original SRM file (http://home.trainingpeaks.com/races/2009-tour-of-california-race-file-analysis/stage-4-larsson.aspx) to further analyze on your desktop in TrainingPeaks WKO+. Basically, what the chart means is that today's (2/18/09) Stage 4 was really hard and taxing on the body, but not quite as tough as Stage 3. In addition to Gustav's and Kjell's race files, Rory Sutherland riding for OUCH presented by Maxxis, has once again provided his data complete with GPS giving a complete map and elevation of the route. Rory rides with a wireless SRM paired with a Garmin Edge 705, both of which are compatible with TrainingPeaks. With the climbing in Stage 4 more than 12,000 feet (3,700 meters), it's amazing to look at Rory's file and imagine riding all those mountains in under 5 hours at an average speed of 24 mph (39 kph) with an average of 309 watts Normalized Power the way he did today. And as Rory's coach Adnan Kadir commented, "It's worth noting that there was 995 meters (3,264 feet) of elevation gain in the first hour and the average speed was still over 40kph (25 mph)." To see Rory’s File Viewer and download his SRM power file visit: http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/M4TQ2QAWX3IWBYQHKXB5MDOTI4 (http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/M4TQ2QAWX3IWBYQHKXB5MDOTI4) (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/rorysutherland-atoc-stage4-fv-650.jpg) Read Dirk Friel's article on Velonews.com (http://velonews.com/article/88174/over-the-mountains) analyzing Kjell's, Larsson’s and Sutherland’s races. Tour of California: Daily Power Files from Team Saxo Bank’s Gustav Larsson | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/image-thumb6.png) Want to know exactly what it takes to race in the pro cycling tours? Find out during next week's Tour of California, when TrainingPeaks will be posting daily power files from Team Saxo Bank's Gustav Larsson right here on the blog. (http://www.velonews.com/) You heard right. Team Saxo Bank and Mr. Larsson, along with the cooperation of the team’s official software system TrainingPeaks (http://www.team-saxobank.com/ny_news.asp?n_id=2239), have (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/image-thumb7.png)approved the sharing of Gustav’s SRM power meter files. Team Saxo Bank’s Gustav Larsson may not yet be a widely recognized name within American cycling circles, but that doesn’t keep him from being a legitimate threat for the overall victory in the Tour of California to be awarded on February 22nd in Escondido, CA. Not only did this Swedish professional cyclist finish 5th overall in the 2008 Tour of California, but he also claimed the silver medal in the Beijing Olympic individual time trial, only 33 seconds behind his Team Saxo Bank teammate Fabian Cancellara. If you just can’t wait to view some Pro-Tour level power data, feel free to review last year’s Tour de France power files (http://home.trainingpeaks.com/races/2008-tour-de-france-files.aspx). You can download the files to a free trial of TrainingPeaks WKO+ software (https://home.trainingpeaks.com/wko-desktop-software/free-trial.aspx) to view detailed commentary of each stage. No doubt the data paints a clear picture of the demands of professional cycling at the highest level. This year’s Tour of California has a newly expanded route with a major climbing day coming on the final day. Unlike past editions, this year’s eventual winner should prove to be not only the fastest time trialist on the start line, but also one of the best climbers. Check out a preview of this year's Tour of California (http://home.trainingpeaks.com/races/2009-tour-of-california-race-file-analysis.aspx), where you will be able to download files to WKO+ and view a graph of each stage in our File Viewer as the race progresses. You can also listen to an interview between Dirk Friel, co-founder of TrainingPeaks, and Bobby Julich, Team Saxo Bank's new Rider Development Manager (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/GustavLarssonTourofCaliforniaPo.WAV), about how the team hopes to improve their performance this season with TrainingPeaks technology. Stay tuned to see just how many watts it takes to finish the Tour of California, and possibly secure the overall victory. | 2/13/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

TrainingPeaks member Cadel Evans discusses the Tour and more | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/image-thumb11.png) As the pro cycling season winds down for the year, the TrainingPeaks team interviewed member Cadel Evans (http://storage.trainingpeaks.com.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/CadelEvansDiscussesTrainingwith.mp3) of Team Silence-Lotto. Currently racing in the Tour of Poland, Cadel discussed his season overall, riding in the Tour de France, and how he uses TrainingPeaks to manage his training. You can listen to or read the entire interview, below. TrainingPeaks: Congrats on your season so far. You once again showed you were one of the world's best stage racers. Were you happy with your preparation for Tour and will you try to replicate the same program next season? Cadel Evans: Yeah, it went better than I had expected, some of the results were much better than we had hoped for. I did have an injury problem caused by cleat problems in June, which was a bit of a worry, it caused a bit of tendonitis in my knee, but otherwise leading into the Tour I was very happy with the level I arrived at. During the first week, I was really good, I was really happy, but from that crash onwards, I was well below my normal level, and considering that, I think I rode a very good Tour. TP: You also crashed in the Tour on stage 9. Do you think that affected your overall result? CE: Absolutely. From that day onwards, I was far below even just my normal level. During the first week, I was really good, I was really happy, but from that crash onwards, I was well below my normal level, and considering that, I think I rode a very good Tour. When I take everything into consideration I think I rode a very good Tour to finish second. Bernard is a rider who Ive known for quite awhile, weve never been on a team together, but weve been good friends for a long time in the Peloton, so having him as a teammate, yeah, Im looking forward to it. TP: A lot of people say you were the strongest rider, but on some stages you lacked team support, especially on the l'Alpe d'Huez stage when Carlos Sastre attacked. To try and alleviate that situation next year the team has signed Bernard Kohl, who was third in the Tour. You have to be pretty excited about that move? CE: Absolutely, I couldnt have asked for a better acquisition for the team. Bernard is a rider who Ive known for quite awhile, weve never been on a team together, but weve been good friends for a long time in the Peloton, so having him as a teammate, yeah, Im looking forward to it. TP: How has your knee injury progressed since the Tour? CE: Yeah, Ive spent a lot of physio therapy time, and yeah, its coming back pretty well, already the recoveries are a bit premature, the Olympics was only 12 days, four of those days I was on crutches, and to be reasonably competitive in the time trial in the Olympics means I already had good recovery. From there Im just making up for the time that I missed during rehabilitation in order to get healthy for next year. TP: Can you describe your off season? Do you mountain bike or lift weights? What do you like to do? CE: In the off-season I follow a fairly careful and strict program of pilates and flexibility exercises, I used to like surfing, but now with my injuries I'll do some open water swimming, I still need to fix things up a bit, and then of course road training. Wherever I am in the world, my coach can access at all the information that Ive got there, not only volumes and so on leading up to the period we are focused on, but hes particularly interested in what I can do on the climbs, because, you know, thats a pretty important factor for winning the Tour and that is always what we are working for. TP: You manage your training through TrainingPeaks. Can you tell us why you use TrainingPeaks? CE: Because its the only program I know of that I can put any training I do into it and it puts it into a nice streamlined management. Baylor University: Training with TrainingPeaks | (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/image-thumb5.png) Peaksware has teamed up with the Baylor University Track and Field team (http://baylorbears.cstv.com/sports/c-track/bay-c-track-body.html) and exercise physiologist Corey Hart (http://www.physiopl.com/) to provide the worlds most complete fitness monitoring system. The system being implemented at Baylor consists of in-depth physiological testing, monitoring of every workout using a Garmin Forerunner 305, and then uploading the files to TrainingPeaks.com for communication and analysis of fitness trends over time, allowing the coaches to customize the training regimen for each athlete. TrainingPeaks founder Dirk Friel visited Baylor University in Waco, Texas to discuss how the track and cross-country team can utilize TrainingPeaks technology to improve the team's performance this season. Dirk spent a day describing the benefits of training with technology, touring the campus, and meeting the athletes and coaches that will be involved with the project. In an interview with Dirk, Head Coach Todd Harbour describes how excited he is about the opportunities that this partnership brings to the team. "We are extremely excited about the opportunity and just honored to be joining your team... last year, we ended up okay at the NCAA meet, but we almost didn't get there... So I said, you know, I need to look at opportunities and look at ways to make sure that I'm doing a good job of monitoring where they're at, and somebody told me about you guys and what you can do, and so that's kind of how it all started and it just went from there." (http://blog.trainingpeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/image-thumb6.png)Under Coach Harbour's leadership, Baylor Universitys Track and Field team, home to recent Olympic medalists Jeremy Wariner, Reggie Witherspoon and Sanya Richards, has introduced the first web-based fitness monitoring system within collegiate running. Each member of the endurance track team tracks their workouts with a Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS running watch. The Garmin watch keeps track of time, distance, pace, and heart rate and is then easily uploaded to TrainingPeaks.com where coaches review the data and plan future workouts. Coach Harbour recognizes the benefits of having more concrete information to work with when coaching a large group of runners with varying needs. "Knowing when there's a potential that we need to slow down a little bit or back off, that's not always easy as a coach, you use your intuition, but if you've got some information to help you in that area, to make it a little more objective, that's great." Exercise physiologist, Corey Hart, explains Baylor has introduced the most advanced fitness monitoring system in the country which has been proven to work. This same monitoring system has produced podium positions in the Tour de France and Olympic cycling events and will now be used for the first time with a collegiate running program. We will be monitoring daily fitness and fatigue in the hopes of creating top performances at the right times of the year. The team will be tracking their progress by uploading their workout files to TrainingPeaks - check back for update reports, including data file analysis, on how they do throughout this fall's cross country season!
