| 8 | VideoApril Show #1 (part 2 of 2) | As a Christian who cares about Gods Creation, the environment, I am one of the 38 thousand people in Texas who will be taking advantage of a government program meant to get consumers to junk their working appliances and buy new ones to help stimulate the lagging economy. As someone who does a good job of tax planning, I havent had any tax liability in years. This means our household is one of the 50% of American households with no tax liability. In other words, odds are that half of my readers are the ones who paid for my (soon to be) new dishwasher. Part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment act (aka Obamas stimulus, or pork-ulus to you Rushl listeners) was to provide money for Americans to purchase energy efficient appliances. Still, should the program really stipulate that you must get rid of a working appliance in order to get the rebate? Dont get me wrong. I am glad to get a new dishwasher, and glad that Im gonna get a deal. As a Christian who cares about Gods Creation (environment) Im all about this stuff. But, the programs motive seems to be stimulating corporations instead of lowering energy usage. But thats another story. The real story is the mess that was the TexasPowerfulSmart campaign to get us to trade up in appliances. They announced that the program would start taking applications at 7am this morning (april 7th). So, at 7:01am the site went down I tried with no luck to get through until 10am. Then I found their twitter feed. I found out that the site ... | 4/13/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 9 | VideoApril Show #1 (part 1 of 2) | Pres. Obama announced that he will open large parts of the Atlantic coast of the USA to drilling, as others for exploration. The NY times article makes it sound like the areas were decided on in a way which would garner support for his upcoming climate bill. Is this a choice based upon his view of the environment? The state of Maine has two senators who may be swing votes on the climate bill, and their states waters were left off limits. Alaskas senators want drilling, and got it. Florida got a section carved out to be off limits so as to please their democrat senator (according to the article). Though there are certainly oil and gas reserves in those areas opened up by Pres. Obama, it remains to be seen how much it actually is. Meanwhile, his climate plan (and green view) seems to have a component of oil and natural gas in the short term at least, while he claims that green jobs will power Americas recovery and future. This may seem a bit contradictory to some, but I applaud him for at least recognizing that energy costs affect the economy and this measure may lower those costs eventually. It does seem that he promised not to do this in his campaign though If this is a somewhat politically motivated action, it will not surprise James Lovelock who recently said that humanity is too stupid to stop global warming. In the war of opinions and data on climate change, it seems that Pres. Obama may attempt to find a middle ground (in the eyes of the international community). | 10 | VideoMarch Show 2 pt 3 of 3 | In Zech 1:17, Yahweh proclaims that (My cities will again overflow with prosperity).[1] The verb usually means to spread or disperse, but has a secondary meaning in the Qal stem, which is used here overflow.[2] The Qal form is used in this sense also in Pr 5:16. This verb when used in the Hifil stem can mean to disperse or scatter things, such as mountains in Isaiah 28:25, which is a creative act.[3] The use of this verb implies that blessing will flow in torrential fashion.[4] Similar ideas can be found in Isaiah and also in Deuteronomy. Isaiah 44:26 describes Jerusalem being, and also does it in the context of the Creator acting in history (creatio continua). The verse is located within a description of God as Creator. Isaiah 51:3 depicts Zion being comforted, and in terms of re-creation. It will be restored to an Eden-like state. Deut 6:10 speaks of cities which are bAJ also. These are cities which are given to the Israelites when going into the land God is giving them. I think that it is important for a Christian who values ecology (environment) to base that view upon ideas found in the Bible. As I will be discussing in the future, Zechariah demonstrates a certain understanding of God as Creator which implies that humanity ought to value and care for Gods creation (the earth). [1]The Hebrew text is from the MT, as shown in BHS, and the English text is from the NASB unless otherwise noted. [2]HALOT, 919. [3]Ibid. [4]George Klein. Zechariah, 105. David L. | 11 | VideoMarch Show 2 pt 2 of 3 | Im not against healthcare for the poor, even if it costs me money. But, I would prefer that the church provide that service. Im afraid that the government is replacing the church in the role of caring for the poor. James 1:27 This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. Personally I am unable to agree with the healthcare bill because I feel that supporting it would be endorsing government to take over a mission given to the church. Now, I know people other Christians who take the exact opposite position. They argue that by supporting more government intervention in health care, they are doing their Christian duty of caring for the poor and sick. I respect their opinion, but disagree. I think the church should be the lamp which shines the light of Christs love to the world, not government. I also think that churches (or The Church) should take care of people who need a place to live. Yet, nowadays when someone needs help with a house they go to the government. Tim Geithner recently purposed ending the ambiguity to whether Fannie May and Freddie Mac are really publicly (or government) owned agencies. I also feel like churches should take the lead in caring for the environment. Once again, government will be taking the mission of caring for Gods creation. To sum up, I disagree in principal with government taking any responsibility or mission away from the ... | 3/29/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 12 | VideoMarch Show 2 pt 1 of 3 | North Texas residents have a unique relationship with Natural Gas drilling. While we enjoy the prospect of having a clean(er) source of energy coming from our own back-yards, and many residents enjoy getting a royalty check, some questions still linger. I have previously mentioned the city-wide query of Benzene emissions in Fort Worth. Now, North Texans have reason to suspect that Gas Well operations may have caused earthquakes in the area. Some potential problems cited in gas well operations include: Benzene emissions, groundwater pollution in Parker County, sinkholes in New Mexico, and now potentially even earthquakes. While I am not one to call for a cessation of Gas-Well operations, I do think that more responsibility should be taken by the companies involved. I realize that the cost will just be passed on to the consumer, but I think that the cost increase would be for a good reason safety. Cheap Natural Gas (as its usually advertised) may be a good source of energy, but it seems to also have some potentially hazardous effects on people and wildlife in the area where wells operate. In light of these issues, I think about the charge in Genesis 2:15 in which God commands humanity to care for the garden (creation). Old Testament Theologian Walter Brueggemann demonstrated that God uses land as a mediator in relationship to his people. When Gods people act injustly, the land becomes barren. When the people are in right standing, then the land is bountiful flowing with ... | 3/29/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
