ExplicitEpisode #82 – Dark Shadows | // NEWS * VAMPIRES: New Orleans - A Great documentary web series about real vampires living in New Orleans, just wrapped up their first season. (10 short episodes.) - Episode 3 is of special note, as it shows how Belfazaar feeds. All of the episodes have been well done. * I AM LEGEND by Richard Matheson was named Vampire Novel of the Century - "The one-off prize was dreamed up by the Horror Writers Association in conjunction with the Stoker family estate to mark the centenary of Dracula creator Bram Stoker's death". - The other nominees were: The Soft Whisper of the Dead by Charles L. Grant, Salem's Lot by Stephen King, Anno Dracula by Kim Newman, Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, and Hotel Transylvania by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. * Tom Cruise to star in a new "Van Helsing" movie - For a new Universal movie but as Abraham Van Helsing, so this is not a reboot of Hugh Jackman's Gabriel Van Helsing. // FOOD * Monsterland Bar & Grill, in Mesa, AZ - Cool place, decent prices considering the atmosphere (atmos-fear?). // SHOUT OUTS * Brad Adair, thank you for the kind words! // PROMOS * Underwood and Flinch and other podcasts by Mike Bennett * Horror Addicts podcast, hosted by Emerian Rich, author of NIGHT'S KNIGHTS and DUSK'S WARRIORS. // BUMPER * GAIL CARRIGER // TV * Lost Girl - I realized that one of the main reasons that I love LOST GIRL on SyFy so much is that the relationship of Bo and Kenzie is just like Lilith and Anna. The show itself, with all of the different mystical characters, reminds me very much of the environment of LILITH'S LOVE. In fact, one could argue that Trick is Malcolm and Dyson is Michael. The big difference, of course, is that all of the mystical creatures on LOST GIRL are ALL Fae. Even the werewolves, succubi and vampires! * The Vampire Diaries - Season finale "The Departed" SPOILER ALERT! // MOVIES * Dark Shadows - Good news: It didn't suck. It's a Tim Burton vampire movie, to be sure. If you go in expecting it to be over-the-top (especially if you are a fan of Tim Burton's movies) I think you will enjoy it. It is as much an homage to the vampire genre (with a cameo by Christopher Lee) as it is to the original Dark Shadows TV show. It's not perfect, but it is NOT the non-stop parody the trailers would have us believe. It does poke a lot of fun at the 70's, like a Gothic Austin Powers movie, but since the point is to illustrate the absurdity of Barnabas being in the ground for 200 196 years, it wasn't that obnoxious. The 70's music was too much, though. There were much better choices. At least Alice Cooper saved us there. - Dan gives it an 8/10. Michelle gives it a 6.75/10. We realized eventually why we liked but didn't LOVE this movie. To borrow a phrase from the movie itself, "she likes to pretend she's Rock & Roll but she's a Carpenters kind of chick for sure." // FAREWELL * We wrapped the show by playing "Twilight" by 11 Steps, with thanks to Jamendo. * Our intro music is "Alchemists Tower" by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech.com. That wraps up this episode of the Out Of The Coffin podcast. Thanks for listening! ExplicitEpisode #77 – Renfield The Un-Dead | // HAPPY (BELATED) HALLOWEEN * We humbly apologize for the delay in not only recording an episode for you (which we did on the 31st) but then in editing and posting for you. - Work has been extremely busy for myself, Michelle's assignment as a temp ended, so she is actively looking for a new position. Then there's our continued issues with our apartment, and we are now beginning to look for a new place. Then there's NaNoWriMo and I'm dedicating as much time as I can to getting butt in chair to write. We both hope you understand and we shall get another episode together as soon as possible (probably after watching Breaking Dawn Part One). // COOKBOOK * We talked about absinthe, including the one I made by maceration of herbs and spices into Everclear (190 proof), but there was no distillation. So by legal definition, this is not really "absinthe". - Wormwood was also not macerated into the spirit (since I cannot distill the result) -- instead I added a wormwood extract after the herbs were macerated and filtered. This produced a gorgeous olive green color, minimally bitter, but high proof alcohol. I prefer the Everclear because it helps break down the natural oils in the herbs better than the vodka did. This just means you need to use about half as much absinthe in your cocktails because it is WAY too strong. - We did a taste test between ours and two other commercially available absinthes (in small bottles). - We made a Corpse Reviver and an Obituary Cocktail. Poorly. (Some substitutes do not suffice.) // PROMOS * Underwood and Flinch and other podcasts by Mike Bennett * The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster, produced as an audio drama by M.J. Hahn // NEWS * Winners at Scream awards! - Best Horror Movie: Let Me In - Best Horror Actress: Chloe Grace Moretz, Let Me In - Best Horror Actor: Alexander Skarsgard - Breakout Performance - Male: Joe Manganiello, "Alcide Herveaux", True Blood - Best Ensemble: True Blood // BOOKS * Gail Carriger's new series for Prudence! * LILITH'S LOVE eBook is now only $2.99! // MOVIES * Twilight: Breaking Dawn trailer -- what do you think? * Renfield The Un-Dead - Michelle gives it a 6, Dan gives it a 7 // HALLOWEEN MEMORIES * La Bal Masque Nocturne * Vampires & Victims Ball in Salem // FAREWELL * Our intro music is "Alchemists Tower" by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech.com. Hahn * Underwood and Flinch by Mike Bennett * GothHaus Season One on Podiobooks.com * DUSK'S WARRIORS podcast novel, the sequel to NIGHT'S KNIGHTS by Emerian Rich * Horror Addicts podcast, hosted by Emerian Rich // FAREWELL * We wrapped the show by playing, "Dracula's Cat" by Dance Monkey Dan, a Marc Vale Production! * Our intro music is "Alchemists Tower" by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech.com. Awesome Show~!
Dan’s podcast show Out of the Coffin is one of my favs. He and I seem to share the same interests, views, and love of vampire lore. Vampire fan? Movie fan? You will not be sorry to sink your teeth into this one! Dan and his gal give a fresh, original, in-depth view on all things vampy! emzbox.com
Broadspectrum Bites
Dan and Michelle are true vampire fans, covering the broad spectrum from the classics to the Twilight saga to anime and beyond. I love that extra oomph where they bring the kids in for even more view points.
Sink Your Teeth Into This!
This is a great podcast about things that go bump in the night! I particularly enjoy the "news roundup" at the beginning of each podcast. Each episode brings you up to date on the goings on in Vampire comics, movies, TV, and everything in between. Give this podcast a try, and I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I do.
