Entertaining and informative, but has room to grow
This was my first regular podcast, and it's a great place to begin. The hosts are mostly interesting, passionate PC gamers, and they have a lot of experience within the industry and a lot of experience with games and the history of games as well. Unfortunately they are members of the press (and part of the industries' PR machine) so you don't get their unvarnished opinions very often, and especially not as it relates to games. They pull no punches talking about game POLITICS, but they regrettably haven't figured out how to let their hair down and tell it like it is when they're talking about the games. It's fun to listen to, though, and I always feel like I'm getting info and a perspective that, while available elsewhere, isn't presented as professionally or as personably. The hosts are good at seeming like normal human beings (they are obviously not broadcasters, which I prefer: super slick sounding stuff like The Video Games Show is predictable, dumbed-down, and boring) but they could benefit from just totally cutting loose. It would really help the podcast seem even more human and warm, and it would cut some of the formality that still pervades the episodes. They seem like they're still warming up a bit. Let it out, you guys, let it out! I think the biggest problem is that they are under time constraints from their IT dept., who don't want to provide the crazy bandwidth required to distribute a show that's more than an hour long. This inhibits the creativity of the hosts by keeping them 'on task' the whole time. They have to self-police in order to get in everything they want to talk about, and don't get the chance to just hang out and have fun like they obviously want to. A great peanut butter digression in Episode 35 is an example of the kind of fun they have when they just relax and go with what's happening. Still, it's a lot of fun. It's a podcast that I look forward to every week, and they're a lot more interesting than the other 'big kid' games podcasts out there. Check it out.
Great, informative podcast
this is an excellent podcast that the guys at PCGamer do. the quality of the podcast in excellent overall, some of the interviews are a bit scratchy though. there's plenty of funny banter and lots of nice tidbits of information.
Decent, but could be better
I can't help but shake the feeling that these guys aren't "real." The atmosphere just doesn't feel authentic to me. They have some good information and catch up on the news, but they worry about selling their magazine and not offending anyone more than making a good podcast. I especially dislike the listener questions segments, the majority of the questions aired are pretty uninteresting, and lately I've just been turning it off when that segment starts. I'd strongly suggest anyone interested in PC gaming check out the GFW Radio podcast, although one advantage of PC Gamer is that it's kid friendly (clean), while GFW is not (Explicit).
