Podcast Description
This is the podcast for everyone interested in 'pirate' politics - the global movement that understands the potential and threats that technology poses for a 21st century society. The podcast features interviews and discussions with people who have something to say about pirate politics – people who believe in the philosophy that ’sharing is caring’. The host is Eric Priezkalns, one of the founders of Pirate Party UK (PPUK). In 2006, the first Pirate Party was formed in Sweden. Now there are Pirate Parties campaigning for political change in dozens of countries, including the UK, Germany, and the US. Two Swedish Pirate Party MEPs sit in the European Parliament. Together, we can change the world, but only if we break down the barriers that turn free thought, art, music and invention into ‘property’. The pirate movement understands that the law needs to change to match the realities of life in the 21st century. Pirates are interested in: the reform of copyright and patent law; ending excessive surveillance, and ensuring that everyone has real freedom of speech and freedom to enjoy our shared culture. The podcast explores these topics by talking with pirates and others engaged with these themes. In recent years we have seen an unprecedented onslaught on the rights of the individual. We are treated like criminals when we share entertainment digitally, even though this is just the modern equivalent of lending a book or a DVD to a friend. We look on helpless as our culture and heritage, so important for binding our society together, is eroded and privatized. The arrival of the pirate parties means now there is a democratic alternative. The pirate podcast gives voice to that alternative. Listen to the podcast to hear from those at the forefront of the campaign for change. As befits a political movement born from the internet, we speak via the internet to pirates and fellow travelers all around the world.

CleanLily Allen: The New Arthur Scargill | Like so many people I was outraged by the discovery Lily Allen infringed the copyright of other musicians in order to promote her career whilst lambasting pirates for just wanting to enjoy music. This is what I had to say about it at my other website, halfthoughts. | 1/2/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
