Eric Sponberg on Free-Standing Masts - May 22,2012 | Eric Sponberg joins us to talk about his work in developing free-standing rigs. According to Eric, "Free-standing rigs are inherently safer, simpler, and more aerodynamically efficient than conventional rigs. They are safer because stayed rigs are held up by hundreds of little parts, any one of which could fail or slip out and cause the rig to fall down. A free-standing mast is held up by just two parts—the partners and the heel fitting—so safety of the rig increases by the ratio of many hundreds to 2!" Want to learn more? Marine surveying is no different from other parts of the industry. We lack a common job description, and a “career path” as well. In this episode, we’ll talk about how the job of surveying can evolve from a person’s first interest in writing a report to the decision to grow a career. What are the common skill sets that need to be identified and acquired? Surveyors Roundtable: Why Masts Fail - Sep 06,2011 | Steve Knox covered this topic several years ago at IBEX, and we think its a good one for our roundtable members to discuss. According to Pat Kearns, "It’s quite remarkable that more sailing rigs don’t fail given the ignorance of those who confidently sail 30-year-old boats still equipped with the original rigging. This luck is probably the rule because (1) most of those boats are never pushed to their performance edge but it takes only one push to bring the whole thing down and (2) because, somewhere along the way, an insurance company required a survey or in the due process of a sale/purchase, a marine surveyor looked at the boat, including the rigging, and the underwriter dictated rigging renewals." Surveyors Roundtable: PBRadio's 100th Show - Jul 05,2011 | For our 100th show, we welcome back our Surveyors Roundtable: Pat Kearns, Jonathan Klopman, and Steve Knox. For almost two years, they have responded to listener questions about marine surveying on the first Tuesday of the month. For this show, we’ll review some of those questions and topics, which range from “What do I have to do to become a marine surveyor?” to “How do I make a good impression when Im called to testify?” We’ve also covered how to write marine survey reports, and what resources and tools to use to give those reports the professional finish that your clients want. More than once, we’ve focused on professionalism and ethic, a topic that is sometimes glossed over in the push to speed up report generation and moving on to the next job. Past shows also gave you some details on pre-purchase work, valuation surveys and how they differ from damage claims. We looked at severe damage in our show on catastrophes, and we discussed the details of surveying an older vessels in our episode on Classic Boats. At IBEX 2011, our Roundtable regulars will make a presentation on the hazards of marine surveying, following up on a radio show from a year ago. And in October, they talked to Dean Pike about Boat Moving and Lifting, a topic that ProBoat E-Training is developing as a hybrid course for boatyard personnel. And of course we’ve discussed technical topics including loose keels, coatings, corrosion, and more. We encourage you to submit your questions for our surveyors by sending an email to radio@proboat.com. (If you want to ask it on the air, be sure to include your name and phone number.) Kurt Hughes Multihulls - Jun 28,2011 | Multihull designer Kurt Hughes will fill us in on how boatbuilders in Africa and India are working with his designs. We’ll also talk to him about his concept of “post-apocalyptic boatbuilding,” or “Strategies and Substitutions to save Money on Boat Construction.” Hughes has paid close attention to changes in the market and offers some interesting ideas about how builders can make boats more affordable. “Conventional wisdom says that building light is costly,” says Hughes. “If building light means carbon fiber, that is true. If building light instead means using superior engineering to configure the materials in efficient highest and best use, it saves cost.” Join us for this engaging episode of ProBoat Radio West, hosted by Ann Avary of the Northwest Center of Excellence in Marine Manufacturing and Technology. | 6/28/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Surveying Classic Boats - Jun 07,2011 | “Classic” is one of those enticing but unregulated terms like “Lite” or “Natural”: The value may well be perceived rather than real. When a boat owner believes that his or her boat has special characteristics that qualify it as a classic, though, what extra precautions and concerns should be taken by the surveyor writing up a valuation report — or a damage survey? The Pat Kearns article posted here will get you started on this topic. Wind Blade Challenge - May 31,2011 | For the past three years, high school students in Maine have competed in a Wind Blade Challenge, learning through hands-on application with math, science, and alternative energy. Responding to the 2011 challenge, students from across the state tested their skills to determine which team had the best performing wind wind blade rotor using a given set of advanced composite materials. Interestingly, the majority of sponsors who devoted time and resources to this project are from the marine industry. Our guest, Paul Williamson is Director and Industry Coordinator of the Maine Wind Industry Initiative. He says, “The event itself is a very interesting subject for the boatbuilding community. We have also done a bit of market research on other wind-related opportunities that are developing that boat builders may be able to provide services to, so we’ll touch on some of that as well.” | 5/31/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Surveyors Roundtable: Expert Witness - May 03,2011 | You may have surveyed boats for many years, but does that qualify you to testify on marine-accident reconstruction in the eyes of your home state? If you advise boat owners on a regular basis, do you know whether or not you are breaching state insurance regulations for public adjusters? The first time that opposing counsel begins to grill you, you’ll discover what it really means to be an “expert witness” and you may leave the stand feeling somewhat shaken. Our surveyors will share their own courtroom experiences, and they’ll point out the key elements that could pose substantial barriers to your testimony in court, too. | 5/3/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Glue and You - Apr 19,2011 | For years, many of us have turned to J.R.Watson at Gougeon Brothers (Bay City, Michigan) when we had questions about glue. Or questions about epoxy resins, hardeners, and a lot of other products. After more than two decades of offering tech support to WEST System customers, J.R. has become a true storehouse of information, and for this show, we invite you to send in your toughest glue questions for J.R. But do it now, because he is going to retire soon. We may also ask him about the 30 or so boats he’s built for himself, and maybe he’ll be willing to tell us about some of his favorite projects, which have ranged from hovercraft to telescopes. How Not to be a Marine Surveyor - Apr 05,2011 | From the outside looking in, survey work – especially for damage claims – may look like easy money. All you need is a little technical knowledge of boats, a check list, a couple of how-to courses, and a clipboard, right? Print up some business cards, and you’re good to go. Except for a couple of key components: Professionalism and Ethics. What’s the real route to marine surveying as a career commitment? What is the proper place in a surveyor’s education for how-to courses and boilerplate protocol? While following a survey checklist may make the insurance adjustor happy -- and settle a claim sooner -- how can clients know they have gotten the best possible information? Join us to talk about how surveyors can build strong foundations for their practices, and how that solid ground will prepare them to handle damage claims and other processes as professionals. | 4/5/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Surveyors Roundtable Prepurchase Surveys - Sep 07,2010 | In the prepurchase survey, there are multiple dynamics of location, e.g, boat (afloat in one place; hauled out in another), buyer, seller, broker, each of which can be in a different location. The surveyor knows where to show up but the boat might live in a slip at a private dock and need to be moved to a yard for haulout. Who’s job is this? When do we want the boat hauled? What about the engine surveyor’s needs? Who’s operating the boat for the test run? Where do we start the job? At the private dock with the boat afloat or at the yard? For example, Pat Kearns says she will refuse (yes, refuse) to enter a hot engine space and the engine surveyor will want to start with cold engines. How does that get coordinated? Who is responsible to ensure that the boat is ready to survey? What about a boat with lockers that are stuffed with owner’s gear? What about a boat that has been in storage for several years? what are the issues? Fuel quality? What about the boat that doesn’t have the required safety gear onboard for the test run? Remember, though all this, that the surveyor may have traveled a hundred miles to the job. | 9/7/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Q & A on Ethanol for boats - Jul 14,2009 | NMMA's John McKnight joined us to answer your questions about ethanol. Here's some background: Today’s boats and marine engines are designed to operate on E-10. The EPA has received a waiver from Growth Energy to increase the ethanol content in gasoline to 15%. The EPA has until December to decide whether or not to allow 15% ethanol in the US gasoline supply. Engine manufacturers will be working with the Department of Energy this summer to begin testing E-15 on select engines. The move towards increasing the ethanol content in gasoline is being driven by the mandate that requires 36 billion gallons of bio fuel in the US fuel supply by 2022.
