VideoGood Ideas Through Collaboration | This past January PSFK held Good Ideas Salon in London, bringing together the most forward-thinking tastemakers, innovators, and experts from around the world to discuss key areas steering innovation and opportunity. The last panel of the day focused on Good Ideas Through Collaboration, where Colin Nagy (PSFK / Attention) moderated a talk between Pat Connor (BBC), Jeremy Ettinghausen (Penguin), Sophie Howarth (The School of Life), and Simon Waldman (The Guardian). While the idea of collaboration is nothing new, the way we use it are still being developed and reinterpreted. Jeremy Ettinghausen noted that collaboration is relatively new in relation to corporations, who are currently struggling with the concept and may be afraid of outsiders. While people are already comfortable collaborating and working together on things they're passionate about, the concept of collaboration is dawning on corporations and the media. Collaborators drive innovation through their ability and willingness to share and cultivate ideas, and through third party tools, anyone can find a way to do what they want to do. But, Simon Waldman argued, successful collaboration is really about the ideas, not the technology. While the collaborative process has its obvious merits, there is always the possibility of exploitation. The panel shared its advice for best practices, such as distinguishing between users creating for the benefit of other users and users creating to benefit a corporation. www.psfk.com. | 3/23/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoGood Ideas in Storytelling | This past January PSFK held Good Ideas Salon in London, bringing together the most forward-thinking tastemakers, innovators, and experts from around the world to discuss key areas steering innovation and opportunity. As part of the day of inspirational ideas, Colin Nightingale, Creative Producer of Punchdrunk and Founder of Gideon Reeling, introduced the audience to a new form of meaningful storytelling. By creating platforms for individuals to participate in their own entertainment, his storytelling design allows users to be part of the story as spectators, performers, and directors. Colin summarizes his work as part theater experience, part art installation, and part night out. Elements that Colin incorporates include the freedom to explore, design through detail and sensory involvement. The work that Colin and his teams at Punchdrunk and Gideon Reeling produce demonstrate different ways to create engaging, interactive works. www.psfk.com | 3/20/09 | Free | View In iTunes

Panelist include Jenny Owen (Ruby Pseudo), Paul Graham (Anomaly UK), Terry Guy (Monorex / Secret Wars), and Brett Booth (MTV). Questioning whether or not youth can always be seen as a barometer for what is to come, the panel explores the nuances of today's youth culture and discusses what sets them apart from previous generations as well as what it takes for organizations to cut through to them. www.psfk.com | 3/19/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
VideoGood Ideas in Mobile | This past January, PSFK held a Good Ideas Salon in London bringing together the most forward-thinking tastemakers, innovators, and experts from around the world to discuss key areas steering innovation and opportunity. For our mobile section, PSFK's Piers Fawkes moderated a panel that included Dan Hon (Six To Start), Mike Butcher (TechCrunch UK), Matt Jones (Dopplr) and Jonathan MacDonald (Ogilvy) on how the everpresense of mobile is unveiling new, exciting ways for us to explore, work, and play. The panel laid the groundwork by emphasizing that mobile development is about people, not technology, and the intersection of these two will be increasingly-defined by applications and tools that are uniquely combined by people to suit their individual needs and desires - not provided from a single, global source. The other key take away from this panel was the distinction between place and location. Brought up by Dopplr's Matt Jones, he explains that computers and phones are great at ‘location,’ but we describe where we are as ‘place’ - where culture meets location. www.psfk.com | 3/18/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRichard Banks on Good Ideas Over Time | This past January, PSFK held a Good Ideas Salon in London bringing together the most forward-thinking tastemakers, innovators, and experts from around the world to discuss key areas steering innovation. There, Richard Banks (Microsoft) spoke about what he refers to as "digital heirlooms" and discussed the histories we are creating about ourselves through digital media and how future generations will interact with the artifacts we leave behind. Richard considered the current products of our technology, such as the thousands of digital photos taken by people each year, and discussed their endurance over time. While previous generations left tangible objects, our current generation has digital ones-- and multitudes more. Our digital objects (physical or virtual) are rarely thought of in the long term. Instead, they are instantly consumed and then disposed of. Richard also discusses the 'breadcrumbs' that we are leaving behind and how future generations will find them. He questions the existing customs and rituals involved with inheritances and how these mores could be applied to our technological heirlooms. www.psfk.com | 3/17/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoGood Ideas Across Disciplines | This past January, PSFK held a Good Ideas Salon in London, inviting our favorite innovators and thought leaders to present their current projects and share some of their own good ideas. Eva shared insights into the philosophy and ideas behind Troika’s varied work, covering graphics, communication, art, product design and engineering, with a focus on the iterative process employed in the development of their projects.www.psfk.com | 3/16/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoGood Ideas in Design | This past January, PSFK hosted the Good Ideas Salon London. For our Good Ideas in Design session, long time PSFK contributor Amanda Gore led an eclectic panel, including Cameron Leslie, founder of the Fabric and Matter nightclubs, Coralie Bickford-Smith, designer of amazing book covers for Penguin books, Kate Moross, creative extraordinaire, and Nicolas Roope, founder of Poke and Hulger in a conversation on how design can-and must- weave a story between an audience and a product, service, and brand. The panel spoke quite extensively about the creative process and there seemed to be a general consensus amongst the panelist that playfulness and experimentation are crucial to good design. A well designed product should reflect a designers commitment to the product - and by creating appealing products, designers have the ability to build authentic relationship with their communities. www.psfk.comOn April 2, 2009, PSFK will be hosting our 8th PSFK Conference in NYC. | 55 | VideoChristian Nold on Good Ideas for Communities | This past January, PSFK brought together our favorite innovators and thought leaders for our Good Ideas Salon London. There, Christian Nold, artist, designer and educator famous for his Biomapping project, discussed how design can create systems of trust within communities. Picking up where the design panel left off, Christian elaborated on how new, performative and embodied approaches to engaging our surroundings and those around us can create powerful change and how designers can leverage technology to develop social relations through democratic procedures. Coupled with a background in fine art, Christian describes the various ethnographic techniques he employs to find out what the real issues are, and then how he works closes with communities to provide solutions. They key he explains, is working with people so that when they walk away, they feel like they were really heard - inadvertently building a relationship of trust. www.psfk.com | 3/12/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoGood Ideas From London | This past January, PSFK hosted the Good Ideas Salon London. After Mark Earls spoke on Why Good Ideas Matter, the discussion moved to a panel of Londoners who discussed Good Ideas from London. Given the question: "What positive inspiration is growing out of London's creative renaissance?", moderator Matt Hardisty (AnalogFolk), Matt Brown (Londonist), Justin Quirk (FHM), Taryn Ross (Urban Junkies), and Paul Andrew Williams (Steel Mill Pictures) explored empirical evidence used to compare the current creative climate of London to previous years to prove that London is still thriving culturally. The panel discussed particular reasons why London was creatively unique and how the city incubated cultural developments. Panelists extracted examples from London's schools to its pubs to explain why the city of London encourages the sharing of ideas. The current recession's influence on London was a reoccurring topic, especially, as the panel pointed out, because it has the potential to positively influence creativity in the city. Another theme was the idea of breaking down barriers: within London, between occupations, and as a result of technology. Through the discussion, the group made a convincing case for why London is still one of the best places in the world for creatives to live and work. www.psfk.com | 3/9/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoMark Earls on Why Good Ideas Matter | This past January, PSFK hosted the Good Ideas Salon London. Starting the day off, Mark Earls, author of Herd, began by discussing the importance of gathering inspiration across categories, market sectors, and groups - and ultimately, how to turn those insights into mass change. Effectively, Mark explains why innovation is important. Mark Earls stressed that innovation is an exercise that needs to be practiced. The mere process of looking for new ideas allows you to challenge whether or not your existing ones are any good. Even if a new idea is not perfect, it can still shine a new light on existing ideas. On an individual level, Mark explains that keeping your ‘new ideas radar’ running prepares you for the real game-changing opportunities when they do come. On a corporate level, the quest for new ideas is good for business because it simply makes everyone’s jobs more interesting. If people are interested and engaged, they produce better ideas of their own and are more inclined to see them through.www.psfk.com | 3/9/09 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoRob Campbell on How Creativity Can Liberate Buisiness | At the PSFK Conference Asia 2008, Rob Campbell (Sunshine/M&C Saatchi) explains why he believes the future of brands is about creating fate - not advertising. Claiming that ad agencies don’t know the difference between an idea and an “ad” idea, Rob describes why true creativity is more cost effective than common philosophies of formal research & development, distribution and brain-washing media spend.Rob explains why companies who are looking for the ’single insight’ are wasting their time and that companies who understand people and culture - not category - and who have a way to transform it into something that is motivating, will ultimately win.www.psfk.com | 1/6/09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoCharles Ogilvie on Look & Feel | At the PSFK Conference Asia 2008, Charles Ogilvie (Panasonic), Creative Designer and Inventor of RED, the award winning in-flight entertainment system for Virgin America, speaks about service innovation, new revenue models, and the use of airborne technology throughout Asia and the world at large. From the drab grey seats and drop down projectors of just ten years ago, Charles describes the process he and his team went through when challenged by Richard Branson to figure out “What’s next in aviation?”Interestingly, Charles explains that in addition to personal entertainment systems, mood lighting, and all the wizzy-wig technological concepts being tossed around, Asian airlines in particular may actually excel best on a service level. Where rules regarding uniforms or service mentality have traditionally held back American companies, Charles encourages any business operating in Asia to take advantage of all that is possible.www.psfk.com | 1/5/09 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoChina & Identity | At the PSFK Conference Asia 2008, Floydd Wood and Jerry Clode (Flamingo International) look at the specific ways Chinese youth are creatively re-working their identity - an emerging trend vital to those wanting to address this demographic on their own terms.Focusing on 'retro' and 'youth identity,' the two researchers explain how Chinese youth are re-interpreting their past to construct new identities. Drawing upon historical events and traditional lifestyles for inspiration, today's youth are carefully extracting aspects of the their past to form their own identity. But as Jerry states, "looking back [in China] is not always a comfortable process. Tumultuous events like The Great Leap Forward, the demographic effect of the one-child policy, and the current economic and social transformation have all contributed to influencing a unique group of young people who are delicately balancing an enormous sense of national pride with a growing influx of global culture.www.psfk.com | 12/17/08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoNick Barham on the Chinese Middle Class | At the PSFK Conference Asia 2008, Nick Barham (Wieden Kennedy, Shanghai) explores the anxiety, opportunity and extravagance of the Chinese middle class. Deliberately not speaking about the "Olympics, the Dali Lama, Tibet, the earthquake, their amazing economic growth, or all the reason why the West is scared or worried about China growing," Nick focuses on the aspirations of China's middle class and the broader social changes that are happening at that level.Noting that the number of new credit cards issued in China jumped from 3 million in 2003 to 90 million in 2007, Nick describes how the middle class are embracing the growing pains of achieving their middle class dream. He explains how the word "nu," which literally means slave, has been re-appropriated by white-collar middle class individuals to refer to themselves - people, who through credit card payments, mortgages, and car payments, use the term in a positive light to assert control over their life and associate themselves with this growing middle class. He also discusses how the middle class are 'under pressure.' both on a city level, due to the shear number of inhabitants and the speed at which that's growing, but how the people themselves are also under growing pressure to perform and keep up with all the changes that are occurring.www.psfk.com | 12/16/08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoMake It With Us | At the PSFK Conference Asia 2008, Colin Nagy (Attention!) interviewed social media/grassroots expert Andrew Hoppin (NASA) and noted architect Mark Dytham (Klein-Dytham/Pecha Kucha Night) on the subject of collaboration. To get the ball rolling, Mark Dytham demonstrated the format of a Pecha Kucha presentation - a ’show and tell’ slide show where individuals present a topic of their choice and are restricted to telling their story with only 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds - a primer to his topic for the panel: the evolution of Pecha Kucha Nights.Andrew Hoppin then took the stage to explain how NASA is trying to re-invent itself by engaging their community through everything from virtual meetings and co-working events to robots and raves.Following their Pecha Kucha presentations, both speakers sat down with Colin Nagy to explore the nuances of collaborative co-working and how companies and institutions can benefit from engaging their audience, staff, partners and the community to drive innovation.www.psfk.com | 12/15/08 | Free | View In iTunes
