Rep. Dan Winslow on lack of basic reform on Beacon Hill | Rep. Dan Winslow brings a ton of great experience to Beacon Hill, including 15 years involvement in local government, he served as a Judge at the Wrentham District Court and as chief legal council to Gov. Romney. He has hit the ground running on Beacon Hill, looking for people of good faith to reform our broken state government. How broke is it? Here’s the Globe on Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, and the broader @MassDems patronage problems, But the larger system of alliance-building through state and municipal government, greased along by dubious fundraising and the awarding of patronage jobs, is a deeper threat to Massachusetts. Murray has rejected McLaughlin, but he and other elected officials need to be far more forthright in declaring that the system of rewarding political supporters with jobs is morally wrong, unfair to other applicants, and damaging to the credibility of the state government. It simply shouldn’t happen. Among the most basic, commonsense reforms Rep. Winslow is pushing is Rule28.com. Called an election year ploy by the hopelessly arrogant and clueless Massachusetts Democratic Party, this measure simply allows a majority of representatives to demand that a bill get out of committee and brought to the floor for a vote. There are some brave Democrats involved in this. They are bucking a party that is against any diminishing of power that has been granted to Leadership, because we all know how well that has worked out with three Democrat speakers in a row who became felons. A simple majority means that the Democrats, given their huge advantage, could do this at almost any time. The fact that the Leadership is against it says everything. They don’t want to cede power to their own members. This has nothing to do with Republicans or politics, only maintaining the status quo. We are up against it on Beacon Hill. Someone You Should Know: Lance Corporal Cody R. Goebel | Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Lance Corporal Cody R. Goebel. From his Silver Star citation, "For seven minutes, he ignored his life threatening wounds and delivered devastating machine gun fire on the enemy’s position, all while refusing medical attention until he was properly relieved. Finally, but only after a fellow squad member had manned his machine gun, Lance Corporal Goebel moved 25 meters under his own power and under heavy fire across the observation post’s roof and down a 20-foot ladder to the casualty collection point. Upon reaching the ground, he collapsed due to the loss of blood and had to be carried to a helicopter landing zone for subsequent medical evacuation. His courage, heroism, and dedication to duty after sustaining a life threatening injury resulted in the successful blocking of an enemy attack and six enemy fighters killed. By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Lance Corporal Goebel reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service." David Leavy and another side of the New Hampshire primary | I can’t think of the New Hampshire primary without thinking of my winter up there working as a volunteer. I was a senior at Colby College in 1992 and went with my friend and fellow political junkie David Leavy to volunteer. I worked for the Tsongas campaign and David went to work for the Clinton campaign. My campaign, Tsongas’, may have won the primary, but I think the real winner was David! Within a few weeks, David had worked hard and made a great impression and he was invited to go to Little Rock to work on the campaign straight away after graduation in the spring. From there, he met DeeDee Myers, becoming her aide and eventually a White House staffer. David spent an incredible seven and half years in the White House pressure cooker, rising to be spokesperson for the National Security Council. That amazing ride started as a volunteer working the phones and knocking on doors during the New Hampshire primary. Hard not to wonder about the young volunteers working up there right now who may end up working in the White House. The New Hampshire primary is more than an election, it is political theater and a great opportunity for voters to get up close to the candidates. It is also a great opportunity for people to get involved in the process, you never know what can happen! One last point that made this interview so fun for me was getting another chance to thank David for giving me one of the greatest non-kid related experiences of my life, two consecutive afternoons in the West Wing, meeting with President Clinton in the Oval Office, watching the national radio address from the Roosevelt Room, walking the Rose Garden, briefing room, etc. It was just an incredible experience I will never forget and it was very gracious of David to make it happen. It has been awesome to follow David’s career. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer person! He is currently Executive Vice President, Global Communications and Corporate Affairs for Discovery Communications. His current job looks almost as fun as his White House job! Daily Caller's Matt Lewis on the New Hampshire Primary | In addition to being a rising star among conservative journalists in Washington DC, the Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis is about as nice a guy as you’ll ever meet. This segment was a ton of fun, because another guy who could not be nicer, WRKO morning host Todd Feinburg, checked in after attending a Chris Christie-Mitt Romney event. He and Tom Finneran will be broadcasting live from NH through Wednesday on WRKO. It was great to welcome Matt back to the show, especially with the New Hampshire primary staring us in the face on Tuesday. Matt wrote one of the most interesting article’s of the weekend, Tragedy of the conservatives: Why Romney’s wimpy foes are acting rationally. "Don’t understand why Mitt Romney’s Republican opponents won’t lay a mitt on him? This started way back when Tim Pawlenty wouldn’t say “ObamneyCare,” but who could have imagined Romney would skate this long? It boggles the mind, but there are actually several good reasons why Romney continues to get a pass. One way of explaining the phenomenon might be to compare it to “The Tragedy of the Commons, which Wikipedia describes as, “a dilemma arising from the situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource, even when it is clear that it is not in anyone’s long-term interest for this to happen.” In this case, the conservative alternatives to Romney aren’t being selfish by overusing a shared resource — they are, instead, selfishly preserving their reputations." Someone You Should Know: Sergeant First Class Javier Camacho | Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Sergeant First Class Javier Camacho. From his Silver Star citation, "Sergeant First Class Camacho maneuvered his tank between the brigade scout vehicle and the enemy fire from the north while B24 covered the south of the scouts so Sergeant First Class Newby and himself could go to ground and administer aid to two litter urgent victims of the attack, with reckless abandonment of personal safety of their own. Gaining security on the area and establishing an evacuation route, Sergeant First Class Camacho then loaded the two casualties onto B34 and sped them to medical attention. Once the wounded were out of harms way and B21 arrived, Sergeant First Class Camacho then guided this section in a tactically proficient and expedient manner that caught the enemy forces by complete surprise and enabled him to annihilate all the enemy forces in the immediate area that allowed his troop to secure passage through a very canalized area. Sergeant First Class Camacho’s personal bravery, tactical expertise and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, 3d Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry, Third Infantry Division (M) “Rock of the Marne” and the United States Army." U.S. Senator Scott Brown on veterans jobs bill | It was great to welcome back U.S. Senator Scott Brown to WRKO’s Pundit Review Radio. The topic of the night was returning veterans and the challenges they face finding work. We had Iraq vet Sam Bowlby and Vietnam vet Bruce Mcquain with us when Sen. Brown joined the conversation. He has been a leader on this issue and shared in a bipartisan victory for veterans this week, "WASHINGTON (AP) – Heralding a rare moment of bipartisan agreement, President Barack Obama signed into law Monday legislation aimed at helping unemployed veterans find work while putting more cash in the hands of companies with government contracts. The legislation, which creates tax breaks for companies that hire jobless veterans, marks the first proposal from Obama’s $447 billion jobs bill to be signed into law. The rest of the package of new taxes and spending has largely failed to garner support from Republican lawmakers. “Because Democrats and Republicans came together, I’m proud to sign those proposals into law,” Obama said during a signing ceremony Monday. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said passage of the bill showed that it is possible for both parties to reach a consensus….McConnell praised Obama for inviting Republican Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts to attend the ceremony. It was Brown who had introduced the 3 percent withholding bill." The job market for returning vets | What can say you do but say thank you and show admiration for anyone who has joined the armed forces since 9/11. I am always especially astounded when students from our finest universities and colleges join. I will always remember meeting a Purdue graduate at Walter Reed. Tonight it was my honor to welcome to the WRKO studios Sam Bowlby, a 2004 graduate of one of America’s finest schools, Hamilton College. He didn’t choose Wall Street or law school after graduating but the United States Marines. Sam did two tours in Iraq, including one in Fallujah, and returned home and earned an MBA from Babson. He is currently working as a contractor for Google, one of the most desirable employers in the country. Sam is looking for permanent employment and like many people is finding it quite challenging, despite his well rounded background and experience. The unemployment rate for veterans is double the national average, which is itself extraordinarily high. We were also honored to welcome Major Liza Tomko, the New England representative of Marines for Life, "The goal of Marine For Life is to harness the skills, contacts and personal and professional networks of Marine Corps veterans and others in the community—to form a network to help Marines. From his Silver Star citation, "Staff Sergeant Baldwin demonstrated an extraordinary degree of heroism under fire, by rallying his Special Forces detachment in the successful repelling of an over-whelming superior battalion-sized enemy force, which maintained the integrity and authority of the Diyala Police Station and the Iraqi Interim Government Counsel. His heroic actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of gallantry and intrepidity, which reflect great credit upon himself, the Special Operations Command Central, and the United States Army." Chris DeRose on Founding Rivals: Madison vs. Monroe | Chris DeRose has written a terrific book about a little understood period of American history, those years between the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the first session of Congress under the Constitution in 1789. Founding Rivals: Madison vs. Monroe, The Bill of Rights, and The Election that Saved a Nation Beyond the story of Madison and Monroe, one thing that struck me time and again was how similar the country’s problems were as a nascent nation and today as a world superpower. The very first tax bill that came before Congress went nowhere and was punted to a “Committee”. Really. On day one of the first session of Congress, the country had a “staggering” $54 million debt, 12% of which was owned by foreign governments. Sound familiar? Madison did a study of failed governments throughout history and the common thread he discovered was paralysis. They were no longer able to govern. Super committee anyone? Overseas rivals mocking our government’s ability to function, not to mention our balance sheet. China and Russia do this regularly. Even intransigent politicians ignoring directives goes back to our Founding. When Pulitzer-prize winner Ron Suskind joined us to talk Confidence Men, he told a story about Treasury Secretary Geithner ignoring a directive from President Obama to break apart Citigroup. Geithner disagreed so he simply ignored it. In Founding Rivals, the order was to strike a deal with Spain to secure access to the Mississippi River. New York’s John Jay didn’t agree and set out to do the exact opposite. Thanks largely to Madison and Monroe, he was unsuccessful. It was remarkable how relevant this book is today. At it’s core, it is the story of life long allies who ultimately became political rivals without becoming personal enemies. Buy this book for any history lover on yopopur holiday shopping list! This week Bruce told us about Lieutenant Colonel Matthew A. Lopez. From his Silver Star citation, "On 17 April 2004, demonstrating extraordinary combat endurance and command presence, Lieutenant Colonel Lopez led a 48-hour urban assault to destroy an estimated 300 insurgents in the city. His brilliant action resulted in more than 120 insurgents confirmed killed, destroying whole insurgent cells and groups, numerous foreign fighters, and the enemy’s will to fight. Throughout the battle, he placed himself with lead platoons, assaulting insurgent fortified positions in house-to-house assaults and employing mortars and rotary wing close air support. By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Lieutenant Colonel Lopez reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service." Talking guy movies with Producer Rob | Well, we can't solve ALL the world's problem each and every Sunday night. On those weeks we need a break from the madness that is state and national politics. He has developed a well-earned reputation as a truth seeker, someone who is uninterested in currying favor with the companies he covers. According to the LA Times review of his fantastic book Exile on Wall Street: One Analyst’s Fight to Save the Big Banks from Themselves, "Stock analysts are not known for being a rebellious sort -– their jobs generally involve writing up dry technical reports on public companies. But Mike Mayo is not your typical stock analyst. It details the conflicts, crony capitalism and greed that helped bring us to the edge of chaos. Mike provides a look behind the curtain, how companies co-opt analysts, curry favor and manipulate their ratings. He tells of his experience on the Street, how he has struggled to do his job, simply because he has always been about getting at the truth about the companies he covers, good, bad or ugly. At a time when there are so few people to admire in public life, especially as it relates to Wall Street, Mike Mayo is the exception. A man of great integrity, character and insight. I was deeply honored that he spent the full hour with us. This is one of my favorite interviews in six plus years of doing this show. Someone You Should Know: PFC Steven J. Cornford | Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about PFC Steven J. Cornford. From his Silver Star citation, "Private First Class Cornford stubbornly defended his position for several minutes, refusing to leave his stricken comrade. He continued to engage the enemy with small arms fire and apply pressure to his Platoon Leader’s wound until his Squad Leader arrived at his position. On his Platoon Leader’s final order, Private First Class Cornford and the Squad Leader engaged the enemy position with hand grenades, knocking it out of action. Private First Class Cornford and other squad members then rendered first aid to the Platoon Leader until additional forces and the MEDEVAC aircraft arrived. Private First Class Cornford’s bravery under fire in close contact was instrumental in his squad’s destruction of the enemy. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Infantry and of military valor." Someone You Should Know: First Lieutenant Colin Cremin | Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about First Lieutenant Colin Cremin. From his Silver Star citation, "His calm demeanor under extreme danger and ability to lead elements of a transportation company, three tank companies, a Headquarters company, and a scout section through a counter-attack to retrieve lost and endangered army equipment is a credit to his leadership and bravery in the face of heavy enemy fire. His strong leadership was a major factor in motivating the members of the convoy to fight fiercely in the face of such an organized attack. Had First Lieutenant Cremin not taken control of the situation once the convoy entered the ambush, there would most likely have been many more friendly casualties and destroyed or captured vehicles. First Lieutenant Cremin’s exceptional bravery while under intense fire during a three-hour attack is in the highest traditions of the 2d Cavalry Regiment, the 1st Armored Division and the United States Army." Someone You Should Know: Staff Sergeant Robert Gutierrez, Jr | Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Staff Sergeant Robert Gutierrez, Jr. Here is the citation to his Bronze Star Medal (With Valor), "Staff Sergeant Robert Gutierrez, Jr., distinguished himself by heroism as a Special Tactics Combat Controller, 21st Expeditionary Special Tactics Squadron, Combined Joint Special Operations Air Component while engaged in ground combat against an enemy of the United States in Afghanistan on 6 April 2008. On that day, Sergeant Gutierrez was attached to Army Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha 3312 as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller, in support of Operation COMMANDO WRATH. He provided critical Airmanship skills during a violent 6 and a half hour battle against heavily armed and entrenched enemy fighters. While approaching the objective, while climbing near-vertical terrain, the assault force was ambushed by anti-Coalition forces which pinned down the lead team on a 60-foot high rock cliff and produced several friendly casualties. Sergeant Gutierrez coordinated with the engaged element and directed lethal gun, missile, and bomb attacks from AH-64s and F-15Es. Despite these strikes, the attack intensified onto his team’s position. Despite being struck twice by 7.62 millimeter bullets in the helmet, Sergeant Gutierrez maintained his calm demeanor and continued to prosecute targets. As the fight continued, the insurgents shifted their efforts toward arriving helicopters and engaged them with heavy fire. Sergeant Gutierrez coordinated with the ground force commander to delay friendly force extraction until the enemy positions could be suppressed. Enabled his systematic control of air power during the fight, all 17 friendly casualties were safely evacuated and 40 enemy fighters were killed. By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Sergeant Gutierrez has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force." Coffee with Caesar's Jack Kelly on OccupyBoston | A few weeks back, I was contacted by Jack Kelley, a former staffer for Mayor Menino, who blogs at Coffee with Caesar. He shared with me his post on the Occupy movement and asked if I would be interested in discussing. Since the post was so thoughtful, and hopeful about the Occupy movement, I said hell yea. I enjoyed having Jack in the studio and having a civil, thoughtful discussion about Occupy specifically and politics in general. At the end of the day, politico’s need to be able to state their case, make their points and agree to disagree. Someone You Should Know: Timothy P. Haney | Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Gunnery Sergeant Timothy P. Haney. From his Silver Star citation, "Gunnery Sergeant Haney’s leadership, personal sacrifice, and calming influence enabled his platoon to repeatedly engage and defeat enemy forces in close combat. From 23 to 26 March 2003, Gunnery Sergeant Haney participated in firefights with Iraqi Military and Paramilitary Forces in An Nasariya, Iraq, during which his personal example while under fire set the tone for the platoon’s tactical success. During a direct fire engagement against a heavy machine gun, he dismounted his vehicle to gain awareness of the enemy’s positions, exposed himself to enemy fire, and provided higher headquarters with vital situational awareness. On 26 March 2003, while the Battalion’s Main Command Operations Center came under attack from two directions, Gunnery Sergeant Haney raced through intense fire to emplace Marines in defensive positions and orient their fires. After an explosion riddled Gunnery Sergeant Haney’s body with 60 pieces of shrapnel, he ignored his wounds and continued to transport injured Marines to the Battalion Aid Station. He refused medical attention until everyone else had been treated. By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Gunnery Sergeant Haney reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service." Someone You Should Know: Col. Charles P. Murray | Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Retired Col. Charles P. Murray Jr., Medal of Honor recipient, who recently died at age 89, "He had joined the 3rd Infantry Division in France in 1944 after the Normandy invasion that June. Over the course of several brutal days in December, casualties thinned the ranks above him. He became the company commander. On Dec. 16, he was leading a platoon of about 35 down a mountain path near the town of Kaysersberg, in northeastern France, when he eyed about 200 Germans attacking another battalion of U.S. troops. Rather than take his men into a position where they would be devastatingly outnumbered, he moved forward alone and radioed for an artillery attack. It missed, and before he could correct the coordinates, he lost the radio signal. He then began launching grenades, revealing his own position and opening himself to a counterattack. Under heavy fire, he exhausted all the available grenades, according to a 2009 Army news release. He returned to his patrol, grabbed a rifle and returned to his position. He fired with such intensity — taking down 20 enemy soldiers and wounding numerous others — that the Germans began to withdraw, according to the Medal of Honor citation."
