ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #213 | Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise. I come from an era of punk rockers who missed the golden ages. I was about ten years too young to grab onto hardcore in '81. Even younger for the first wave of punk. I became a self-professed, full-fledged punk in 1986. I went to school in rural towns, all the way through college. Ask around. '86 was a low point for punk rock and there were a rough several years afterwards. I wasn't in Berkeley when Gilman was exploding, got to see fIREHOSE instead of the Minutemen. ALL instead of Descendents. Those aren't complaints. If it were, I'd get to the root of it and blame my mom and dad and ask them why they didn't f**k ten years earlier, which seems vain and silly. I got in during a long punk lull, which was okay by me. One uptick was that punk vinyl was in abundance, not-yet-very-collectible, and budget priced. (The Feederz record probably set me back ten bucks.) So, for a good ten years, I bounced this punk thing around with a small group of friends who routinely got called f*gs by cowboys, rednecks, jocks, and random passer-bys. (What stung was when people called us hippies.) I've always been of modest means, so whatever music I bought, I played and played and played. I'm thankful for that. It made me appreciate music in and of itself. It also gave me ample time to form my own musical tastes. When I got into a position where I had abundant access to music, I promised myself that I'd never take it for granted. That I'd keep searching while continuing to appreciate songs and bands that helped me through culturally dark, bleak times. This s**t's all over the map, yet it all fits together somehow. ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #212 | After some quick scrambling around my room, opening some recently delivered mail, and doing some quick organizing; I discovered that I have a pretty decent set of songs to play. A mixed bag of sub-genres, with one main thing in common: punk vinyl. Last weekend was a whirlwind of shows and record stores. And although I didn't pick up anything new, it's always nice to just be around it and check in on what's out there. Whether I'm salivating over a copy of the Yes LA comp on the wall at Permanent Records or looking over the new “sold out” Tragedy LP at their show, it's affirming to see so much time and effort going into this culture I hold so dear. Hope you hear something you don't hate. -Daryl To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #211 | America! Who doesn't love America? (Well, okay. Yeah, I know.) America is a unique country—each of the fifty states that comprise the country has its own beauty and personality. I've had the good fortune to visit forty-six states (Hawaii, Alaska, North Dakota, and New Mexico, in case you're wondering) and have seen some gorgeous sunsets, awe-inspiring mountains, farmland as far as the eye can see, and the bustle and diversity of its cities. Although I'm by no means a nationalist and despite its contentious political stands, I still love living in a country that has so much variety (although it's still impossible to find a good burrito east of Chicago). So all that being said, the theme this time around is songs with American state names in the titles. Hope you hear something you like! –Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #209 | A batch of (mostly) darker, moodier stuff this time 'round, with a sort of 60/40 split between new and “classic,” stuff if you will. The X track is by the Australian group that was active during roughly the same period as their Los Angeles counterparts, and was a whole different kind of awesome. Also, if you can find a copy, I recommend the film Salo, by director Pier Paolo Pasolini, who is the subject of Coil's “Ostia.” Heartwarming film fun for the whole family, it is. -Jimmy To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #208 | Picking records to play on a podcast is f****d! Should I play all my pals' bands to be cool? Do I try and find the most obscure s**t that makes me seem hip and relevant? Hell, I could have taken the payola from Adam Alive and played a whole set of “It's Alive Records” crap. But the allure of an Adam b*****b has lost all the zing. Last time I had one from him, he didn't even cry once during the whole process. Looking at my vinyl, I decided to bring out some records that inspired me to play music as well as got me into this punk called rock. The process of picking fifteen records or so was also a tedious task. I like to say that I am really into power pop from the ‘70s and early ‘80s and I felt like I had abandoned my roots as I pulled out some of these oldies and blew dust off each cover. A few of these licorice pizzas haven't been spun in years. It really brought me back listening to them and picking what tunes I would play. My only problem with this was sharing the limelight with a gal who claims Bruce Springsteen is the voice of his generation (Christina) and a known terrorist (Donna) I know that I am on some friggin' list because of this. There goes my easy through the airport security white male ticket I used to have. It's worthless now..... The good that came from all this was that I was able bring the bad out of Todd. I have high hopes you people will see now him for the racist he really is. Bless his big bigoted heart. -Matt Phuzz To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #207 | Was gonna write this long, heavy rap about the role of music in my life, “how I rarely go three minutes without either listening, playing or even thinking about some band, album or song; how I've driven most of the people I know batshit at one point or another with all my blathering of facts, tidbits and so on about s**t most sane people could care a fig about; and how, contrary to popular belief, each and every release I pull from Razorcake's review bins is met with the thought that it's surely gonna be the greatest danged thing anyone's ever heard in the history of sound waves. But no, suffice to say I think music is mighty swell, we'll leave it at that and let the tunes do the heavy lifting here. A lot of different styles from different eras this time 'round, partly to keep things from becoming one long, boring blur of soporific sonic blah, partly 'cause these are songs I've been diggin' a lot lately. The obscurity hounds will note the Membranes track from their 1983 demo. As mentioned in the podcast, this is not the UK band, but rather the one that hailed from Hollywood that released (to the best of my knowledge) only two tracks on vinyl, “a version of Rick James' “Super Freak” on Mystic's Covers comp, and the tune “Hollywood Girl” on the Mystic Sampler #2 comp, “and included members that went on to figure prominently in Dead Lazlo's Place, I believe. A band I was in played Dollar Night at the Cathay de Grande with them, Mad Parade, the Steps and the Factor back in 1983, we became instant fans and as you can tell by the sound of the recording, that demo got a helluva lot of radio time. Speaking of covers, I think you'll find the cover of Stevie Wonder's “La La La” by East Los legends will indeed, “tear you up.” Music, man. In the words of the prophet Flava Flav, “Rock that s**t, homie.” –Jimmy To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #205 | Another podcast of tuneage both old and new submitted for your aural edification, kids. Some quick things of note about the stuff here: - Nervous Gender's Gestalt single is the first formal studio release by both band and label in a loooooong time, and I think most will agree it was well worth the wait. - "Sick" Rick Medina, vocalist for The Dysfunctionals, was killed 9/15/08 while riding his motorcycle to work. He was a natural-born front man” (charismatic, funny as hell, and a consumate showman who took care of business on the mic without ever taking himself too seriously) and a cool homie. Though it's apparently hard to find these days, I highly recommend seeking out anything by this band or his previous band, Sister Morphine. - When you have a few minutes to kill, look up the video for the Monsters' "Blow Um Mau Mau." Hope ye dig it. -Jimmy To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." It's a hefty file, so it may take some time to download to your computer. ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #204 | The longer I do podcasts, the simpler the process becomes. I play music I like. It's fun matching up stuff that I've enjoyed for a long time—like The Saints and Tragedy this time out—and mixing it in with brand new songs from active bands. Keeps the soils tilled; the scalp itchy, the radar blipping. I'm also glad that it's no longer 1996 for punk rock. That was the year I started reviewing for Flipside and was confronted with a landslide of so many bands trying to fit into subgenres that were selling really well at the time. (Ska punk. Very processed pop punk. Emo.) I've said this before, but I think it deserves repeating. Punk's a big umbrella. It's alive in unlikely places and is continuously changing. (But you know what it is, instantly.) Life's too short to cram yourself in one of its subgenres or to live and die by a rigid set of bands. Bounce around a little. Get stupid. Seek out your favorites, play the best. Otherwise, the internet and khaki pants win. -Todd To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." I visited L.A. in February 2012 and spent the afternoon at Razorcake HQ, playing some favorite music, with a focus on records I reviewed for Razorcake, and selections from Richmond, Virginia's fertile DIY scene. Expect eclectic. -Chris To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." It's a hefty file, so it may take some time to download to your computer. ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #200 | Bicentennial bazooka of tunes! Listen to two non-profit board members shotgun beers as thanks to large donors! (Not joking. Laughing while burping hurts.) Daryl and I went through several ideas for this podcast that got bogged down. I tried to find five punk songs I really liked that mentioned ice cream. Because ice cream's rad. And ice cream's a party. After a couple weeks, I only found song I really liked and about five I was ho-hum about (covers of “Ice Cream Man” run rampant). Eddy Current Suppression Ring's “Cool Ice Cream” was the sole survivor of my ice-cream-in-punk-song search. I thought punk would be lousy with ‘em. Being a responsible, legitimate non-profit takes a lot of paperwork, especially at the end of a year. Then that dim bulb went off. “Wow. We've been busy the past twelve months. We put out… five records? Really?” You want a party in one hand and tunes to that celebration in the other. Ding dong! Lightning bolt. Fuckit, let's play songs we really like by stand-up folks. We just happened to put them out. The crass will call it cross-promotion. Crass could, hypothetically, call it reinforcement of the paradigm of the self-dialectic. I call it, “Oh, yeah. Summer Vacation's rulin' it. That song's about Tiffany.” Daryl rolls his eyes. Daryl picked songs by bands that mean a lot to him. He put a lot of thought into it and we totally avoid talking about it in the podcast… silence… We'd also like to thank Phill Legault for the donation of the new podcast computer. We had to double check that it rendered the final file. So fast. So this is what the 2000s feel like? Civil war musket to space shuttle type of difference. Big ups also go out to Wes Chapman who's in the process of turning the previously janky podcast setup into a swanky one. My knee no longer thwaks the headphone jack and makes songs mono in the middle until we jiggle the wire again. Razorcake's done two hundred podcasts? No f*****g way. So f*****g way. -Todd To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." It's a hefty file, so it may take some time to download to your computer. ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #199 | Hey kids! Mitch Clem here, back with another slam-bang, action-packed podcast full of thrills, chills, and telephone bills. No theme this time around (some things never change), just some awesome punk rock jams and two bottles of wine. I hope I didn't come off as the obnoxious douche I normally come off as, though, truth be told, I made no effort to hide it, so what am I even saying? Thanks to everyone who wrote to Todd and asked if I'd do another one of these, and thanks to Bryan Static for being my copilot through this crazy adventure called LIFE. At least, the podcasting parts of life. No relevant photo to go with this one, so here's a picture of a badass vintage racing bike I just bought! ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #198 | Confession: I sat on a prototype of this playlist for the last three months. The transitions between songs just never felt quite… correct. What you are about to experience is the fourth or fifth incarnation of this playlist. Slowly, after much poking and prodding, this experiment has come to life and will soon haunt townsfolk of a small European village. I blame my “to-read” pile actually. That bastard never seems to shrink. Please listen to this podcast while reading a good book. -Bryan Static bryanstatic@gmail.com To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #197 | Punk has taught me a lot of things. Here's a short list I came up with when compiling this podcast. A.) $50 punk shows can blow me. Class war. B.) It's hard for me to call a band a “band” if they haven't made any new music in the past ten years. I feel that some bands should now be listed in air quotes. “Dead Kennedys.” C.) History's cool. Slavery to that history isn't. D.) Slavery still isn't cool. F.) I like Fugazi a whole lot. That's not an extremely revelatory statement today, but in 1989, it was. I'm glad I didn't toe the “Minor Threat or nothing” line. I've seen the alternative-universe Todd and he's an insufferable p***k. G.) I don't hate the internet. I wouldn't be so testy if the internet met its promise and potential, where the world would be smaller, closer; not more isolating; that'd we be playing on a more level playing field against forces much more powerful than us. We're not. It's not. I'm bummed. H.) Nostalgia. Why is it so expensive? And I'm not talking just about money. Don't you get any bit excited that there are new bands making new songs… that flat-out rule? I.) Over the past fifteen years, DIY punk's been more invisible because “punk” became a “sound” and, for the people who marketed it as such, it was business as usual... and many punks bought into the fiction. Curious. K.) Don't worry about killing your idols. Kill the idea of idolatry. Trade it in for mutual respect. L.) Let punk lead you by the hand to other awesome s**t. Here's a trajectory that close listening took me: Billy Childish-Oblivians-Goner-Stax-Otis Redding. Rad. Thank you. M.) If you listen to a band that's not singing in your native tongue, how you listen to music changes. N.) Anger and questioning are international languages. O.) If we don't make and preserve and maintain our own history, we're done. Erased. Or someone else turns it into nostalgia. P.) What the f**k? I never played “Hops and Barley” by Leatherface before on a podcast? I'm a dope. Q.) Enjoy the spectrum of punk, from past to present. Treat it as a living thing, not an ossified parody of itself. Interact with them s***s. -Todd To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..." ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #196 | Goddamn, this Marvelous Darlings LP is a much needed reminder of how fun music can be. To reiterate, keep a watchful eye on corporate interests in punk rock, keep an eye out for homophobic/racist/sexist/classist discrimination within the scene, don't let anyone get away with acting like a rock star, squash the b******t whenever possible, but also whenever you can; get your hands on records like this and let the melodies warm your soul. Punk is supposed to be an outlet, not a let down. ExplicitRazorcake Podcast #195 | Metal was the first non-mainstream genre of music I got into. In middle school I had some older friends that got me into metal (Christian metal, at that! Don't ask—it's a long story). Eventually, I found my way into hardcore and punk and, in the process, realized there were a lot of quality (non-Christian) independent metal bands, too. Metal still holds a special place in my heart due to its ability to express the rage and aggression I often feel, even though I'm way past my teen years. (It never really goes away. You just learn to live with it.) So I present to you some of my favorite independent metal songs (plus Slayer, because, well, they're Slayer.) ExplicitInterview Podcast with the Gateway District | The Gateway District is an excellent band. Yup, that about sums up my demographic research, my Gallup Poll, my “how many friends do they have?” I like them. They're getting stronger and stronger. Their second full-length, Perfect's Gonna Fail was one of the sleepers of 2011 for me. It never strayed far from the record player. It's got some marathon legs. That's some quiet Midwestern confidence for you. They avoid slickness and focus on songs with timely deliveries. They're from Minneapolis and surrounding environs. Two strong ladies—Maren and Carrie—handle the singing and play guitar and bass, respectively. Brad, a man who put all of his worldly possessions in a boat and sailed down the Mississippi, is their drummer. Their guitarist is one hell of a contemporary author. (Nate Gangelhoff couldn't make the West Coast shows. Dave Strait's no tour slouch, by any stretch.) Gateway District has been lumped into pop punk, but I disagree. This is punk that's agreeable to listen to without losing any sort of emotional or sonic edge. We over at Razorcake like the Gateway District so much that they made the cover of our 10 Year Anniversary issue (http://www.razorcake.org/store/razorcake-65). Since they were able to make the trip out to Razorcake HQ, we did our best to record the interview. I don't know about you, but I like it when people you respect are given the opportunity to talk for themselves instead of it being chopped up. Here you go. An interview with the Gateway District. If you've never heard them before, the podcast starts off with one of their songs. -Todd Taylor INTERVIEW WITH THE GATEWAY DISTRICT To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."
