We hope you enjoy, and that it provides some useful insight into what the blue oval is up to, right now. Our first sight of the radical Renault Twizy concept, which Renault chief Carlos Ghosn claims he's serious about putting into production in 2011. A single seat electric city vehicle with a 100 mile range, could they really be serious? Personally I love it. | 26 | VideoReflections on High Speed 2 | Mark Charmer and Joe Simpson discuss current proposals for a new high speed rail link in the UK with Marzia Aricò, a researcher in Innovation Design at Central St Martins College in London. Are we designing travel around a previous era? Is this the culmination of many people's lifelong work rather than the solution for the next generation of work? Rather like Concorde's designers and political supporters assumed that society and business would need ever greater speed, does HS2 risk misjuudging the future? We talk about alternatives that could create genuine integrated transport. The Movement Design Bureau. Bermondsey, London. Wednesday 26 August 2009. | 9/1/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
VideoInnovation in urban transportation | We had a visit today from Marzia Aricò, a researcher in Innovation Design at Central St Martins College in London. She's interested in how urban transportation changes much more slowly than society and policymaking does. If only that could change. Here we talk about how London's transportation is designed around Victorian mobility needs and how leadership in transportation design is usually organised around Mayors (be it their whims, short-term priorities or fleeting opportunities to have leadership in public authorities). Joe explains how there's a lack of research on user needs comparing key cities, Mark* talks about how little effort is done to incorporate theories on the future of work and how that impacts on urban design. | 28 | VideoUser research: what do you think of the Ford Fiesta's design? | The Ford Fiesta is Europe's best selling car right now, and the Blue Oval seems very proud of its funked-up new Fiesta. It's coming to the US in 2010, and there's a sense of excitement about the car among many of those that we speak to. Its design was the result of a 'Persona based design' approach, which you can hear Ford's chief design VP - J Mays, talk about here: http://remove.blip.tv/file/2099760/ . The Persona in question goes by the name of 'Antonella' - a 28 year old, Italian Brunette who lives with her parents in Milan. But what do young, London-based professionals think to the car's design? Ford has made a strong play toward women, inparticular, with the interior and it's phone-inspired centre console. So while we had a new Fiesta Titanium TDCi on test last weekend, we gave rides to a bunch of the people we know, and asked them what they thought... so over to Frankie, Andrew, Amy, Dom, Robb, Sarah, Jo and Vinay. We'd love to know what Ford's design guys make of their thoughts. | 8/24/09 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoFord's first electric Transit Connect on the production line at Smith Electric | The first vehicle in Ford's electrification strategy is the Transit Connect van, which goes on sale in the USA in 2010. As part of the strategy, Ford has partnered with Smith Electric vehicles - who are based in the UK, and who have a long history of making electric vehicles and converting regular vans and trucks to battery power. Here, Dan Jenkins of Smith walks us down the production line just after it has closed, and we see the first electric Transit Connect Tourneo (people mover) headed to the US to begin tests and demonstrations. | 8/19/09 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoMitch Altman and Vinay Gupta on open source design | Are a lot of the efforts of new networks of designers – often in the form of hackers or open source communities - too focused on arguing about the need to break down existing structures? Or is there more happening beyond that? What can those networks be doing now – to create real value? Do hackers and open source networks have an identity and meaning that can defined by what they are, rather than what they aren't?Here Mark Charmer talks with San Francisco-based virtual reality and hacker god Mitch Altman, inventor of, amongst other things TV-B-Gone, and Vinay Gupta, open source hardware guru and inventor of the Hexayurt open source refugee shelter.Design Museum, Butler's Wharf, London. 9 July 2009 | 7/27/09 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoDriving the 2010 Ford Flex EcoBoost | We've already spent a week in the Ford Flex - and like it quite a lot. It's a comfortable, spacious sector-buster which features really interesting exterior design language. The only issue we had with it, was that it seemed to be crying out for a bit more power (it's not exactly a light beast). So by fitting it's new turbo-charged, direct-injection V6 "EcoBoost" engine to the car, Ford hopes to remedy that. | 61 | VideoDrew Smith and the car industry's failure to do digital | We spent a fine afternoon at the Angel pub at Rotherhithe in London on Friday, talking with one of our favourite design commentators - Drew Smith, aka @drewpasmith on Twitter. The conversation was, in several ways, atomic. While in the 1950s and 60s cars stayed in tune with their age - the space rocket you could afford to buy - Drew argues that the auto industry has failed to connect with the digital age.We talk too about the role that notions of ownership, and how, as a result of social networking, they are perhaps starting to dissolve. | 75 | VideoScott Monty's 1 per cent goal | Joe and I had a drink with Scott Monty, Ford's head of social media, on Monday night. Scott's at the heart of some of the big developments going on at Ford about how it communicates its story more openly.Scott - aka @scottmonty on Twitter - is building quite a name for himself. As @amydoesdesign a design student at the University of Cincinnati put it this weekend. "Oh my god, you meeting Scott Monty is way more interesting than meeting J Mays (Ford's design chief)."We talked about the challenge of getting 200,000 employees comfortable sharing more about what they do, and bringing to life what the organisation is about and how it's changing. "Even if we get only one percent of our employee population doing this, that's 2,000 people - on Twitter, blogs, Facebook, discussion forums." The Dearborn Inn bar was DARK so excuse the image quality. The audio's fine though. Check out the splendid fake English accent of the local 'ostess Caroline right at the end. Golden Eagle Lounge. | 77 | VideoMeeting Carrie Nolan, one of the faces behind @thehenryford | Joe and I have decamped this week quite a lot to the cafe in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, because the wifi's so much faster than the Dearborn Inn, where we've been staying.Proving the power of Twitter to get people together, we tweeted we were here and were soon joined by Carrie Nolan, a PR manager from the museum, who came to say hi and tell us how things are going. The Henry Ford Museum is a must for anyone interested in the history of how we move, mass produced vehicles, the story of the American railroad, and its aviation history. One of my favourite exhibitions is its story of the transition of aviation from a dangerous sport to a credible, safe form of transport. The area had one of the world's first proper airports, and its first airport hotel, the Dearborn Inn. | 79 | VideoFord's Nancy Gioia talks EV affordability | Making affordable electric cars for the masses is one tough equation explains Nancy Gioia, Ford’s director of Sustainable Mobility Technologies and Hybrid Programmes. “At the end of the day, if there isn’t a sustainable, economic business model for everyone in the chain, then it won’t work. The models by which we have approached the business in the past may have to totally change in order to get there,” explains Ford’s Gioia.“Working with battery suppliers and manufacturers is a bit of chicken and egg scenario. Until you have a reasonable market and growth, the amount of cost to install capacity and do the development is an issue. We now feel we have enough data to say that for electric vehicles, the batteries meet the durability life requirements. So that’s a big plus.”Joe Simpson. One half of the Renault-Nissan alliance, a brand portfolio that includes Infiniti - who are successful in the US but until recently didn't exist elsewhere, and whose own range spans from the Micra Euro-mini, through the Cube and right up the monster GT-R. This Qazana concept, could signal a complete new direction for Nissan's next B-segment car. Ultimately, if the company is really brave, it's production version might replace the B-segment Micra altogether. Something Nissan has history of - launching the Qashquai crossover as replacement for the c-segment Almera hatch.Whatever, this concept was one of the stars of Geneva. It's challenging in some respects, but has plenty of design details to catch the eye. | 3/6/09 | Free | View In iTunes
