CleanRelated Recap #273 - Sequart Research & Literacy Organization | Sequart Research & Literacy Organization is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting comic books as a legitimate artform. Our mission is twofold. First, we promote research into comics-related topics, publishing books, producing documentary films, and maintaining online resources that encourage comics scholarship. Second, we promote comics literacy by promoting the medium and encouraging others to experience the unique artform known as comic books. The term “sequart” is an abbreviation of “sequential art.” It is used as a term for the medium itself, independent of particulars such as genre (e.g. super-heroes) or format (e.g. comic books, graphic novels, manga, newspaper strips, illustrated text, children’s picture books, and even sculpture such as the stations of the cross). | 5/18/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanRelated Recap #271 - Jay Fosgitt | Jay Fosgitt www.jayfosgitt.com Raised on a steady diet of Muppets, newspaper comics and classic television (which, thirty years ago, was just called "television"), my taste for pop culture developed early on. For no specific reason, I took to drawing at age two, and evidently was pretty good at it. Two years later, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be a cartoonist when I grew up. Working towards that goal, I won awards in grade school for my art, corresponded with my idol, Jim Henson, and began getting some positive attention for my work. High school held similar successes, ushering me into my earliest forays in freelance commercial art and professional caricaturing, and garnishing me even more attention and awards. In college I saw my comics published for the first time in my school paper (the Delta Collegiate, which ran my "Highschool: Part II", "Cartoon Ruckus" and "Chicken Strips" comics for five years). After I transferred to Central Michigan University I got further experience in cartooning with the publication of two new comics in my school paper (CMLife, which ran my "Mother's Goofs" and "Waste Products of a Warped Vision" comics for three and a half years). It was also at CMU that I met the love of my life, Laura Tanner, who, for the first time ever, gave me something to cherish that I didn't create on a sheet of paper. In 2006, I dusted off Dead Duck, a character I'd created when I was fifteen, and began to create my first graphic novel featuring him and his sidekick, Zombie Chick. "Dead Duck" was published by Ape Entertainment in December 2009 and was a big success. In 2008 I was inducted as a member of The National Cartoonists Society, an honor which I still enjoy today. These days I'm a happily successful cartoonist living in Ann Arbor, MI with his true love, his life's passion, and a cat named Goonie. | 5/11/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanRelated Recap #268: Matt Anderson and Vinnie Firello | Matt Anderson Bio via Ape Entertainment ape-entertainment.com Somewhere between the time of being able to properly pronounce "spaghetti" (instead of, "pascghetti") and turning five years old, Matt Anderson became a lifelong comic book fan. Over the next two decades Matt unapologetically collected a wide assortment of comics - ranging from Xerox-quality independents to chromium enhanced superheroes. Despite some sporadic downsizing, he remains the (all too) proud owner of a complete run of both DC Comics' Justice League Task Force and Extreme Justice. In 2007, comics ceased being just a hobby and took a legitimate step towards becoming a career when Ape Entertainment published his all-ages sci-fi series, White Picket Fences. Recently, Matt officially joined the Ape staff, where he works as Assistant Editor. In his rapidly decreasing free time, he can be found writing scripts for the next volume of White Picket Fences, and the forthcoming Kung Fu Panda series. Matt lives in Illinois with his wife, son, and dog - all of whom are way more awesome than he probably deserves, and he is endlessly grateful for that. Vinnie Firello Bio via Wikipedia paperandplastick.com Vinnie Fiorello (born June 24, 1976) is an American drummer, lyricist and founding member of the ska punk band Less Than Jake. As a child, Vinnie's family owned a dog named Jake who was "treated like a king" according to the band's website FAQ page. As a result, everything in the house became "Less Than Jake", spawning the band's name. Vinnie is known to be a collector of Pez dispensers, along with Less Than Jake bandmate Roger Manganelli. Vinnie grew up in New Jersey, having moved to Gainesville, FL at the age of 16. As a result, almost every Less Than Jake album features a reference to New Jersey. Though his drumming style does not reflect it, Vinnie was influenced by Dave Lombardo of Slayer. It was his idea to record two Slayer covers ("Evil Has No Boundaries" and "The Antichrist") and release a 7". These two covers are found on rarities collection "Goodbye Blue and White". As the lyricist, Vinnie is generally regarded as the symbolic frontman for the band, despite being the drummer, and is usually the subject of any interviews with the band as it was he and Chris Demakes, the band's guitarist, who founded the band at the University of Florida in 1992. Vinnie is the founder, and former owner, of the Fueled by Ramen record label. Originally a small project to release music of bands he personally liked, the label expanded, releasing music from such high-profile artists as Panic! at the Disco and Fall Out Boy, and list the likes of Yellowcard, Jimmy Eat World and Home Grown as label alumni. Vinnie stated in his blog that he left Fueled by Ramen in late 2006, having been at odds with the record company's direction for a while as well as lacking his personal influence, but the split is not widely considered to be acrimonious. Since then, he and his Less Than Jake bandmates have created a new record label: "Sleep It Off Records". He also owns the online designer toy and clothes company Wunderland War, formerly Monkey vs. Robot. The company have previously sponsored a Threadless competition. They are currently manufacturing their third series of toys, entitled "Symptoms", and is creating a new music management company called SETAFIRE. Fiorello has also recently started Paper + Plastick, a record label focused on joining artwork and music. As well as musician, Fiorello is now a children's author. His first book "Sometimes Robots Like Being Robots: 13 Stories Looking Into the World of Robots" is due for release in December 2008. | 5/6/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

I've been a fan of comics since before I could read, and have seldom in my life dreamed of becoming anything other than a comicbook illustrator. I've been in the business since 1999, when I started work on my maiden voyage, Battle Pope. Since then, I've lent my hand to books such as Masters of the Universe, Brit, the Eisner Award-nominated series The Walking Dead, and my new creator-owned books Fear Agent and The Exterminators. CleanRelated Recap #252 - Jeff Balke | Jeff Balke Like most kids at a young age, Jeff doodled with pretty much anything you put in his hand (crayons, markers, pens, pencils, chalk, rock on pavement...). Nothing could have made him happier. In 1993 Jeff went to his first comic book convention "Chicago Comic-Con". This was the turning point in his life. There, he met the man himself... Mr. Stan "THE MAN" Lee! Stan was full of energy and talked to everyone who wanted his autograph. When Jeff got up to him, he put down Amazing Spiderman #41 and he signed it while taking a Polaroid of him and Jeff. To this day, Jeff has never forgetten what Stan said to him right before I left his table..."Keep pushing true believer, dont give up, it will happen", all with a smirk on his face and a slight head nod. At the time, Jeff didn't really know what he meant but later that day he realized he wanted to work in the comic book industry. All throughout high school, Jeff's work was published in magazines, businesses, banners, brochures, fliers and schools. In 1998 (just one year after he graduated Warren High School), he was invited back to the school to show the students how to draw the comic book way, or at least the way he did it. For 2 weeks Jeff taught the art classes his style. It was a huge success and he was invited back to be a guest speaker for future classes. Up to about mid 2005, all Jeff wanted to do is illustrate comics. That all changed on myspace where he posted a few black and white illustrations to his profile and received a few good comments. When he was asked if he had any "colored" work, he colored one up right away in Photoshop and posted it. That drawing got more comments than any of his b/w illustrations and that put him on the path he's still traveling today. In 2007 a "color artist" was born when he got his first gig on a comic called Foxwood Falcons (After Hours Press). This was the beginning of his professional career. Since then, he's worked on the Sire, Velvet Rope, Jesus Hates Zombies, Zombies vs Cheerleaders, Jeff (just to name a few). Currently he's working on a graphic novel called Foot Soldiers and working on a few projects with Art Baltazar and Franco along with getting hired at Zenescope Entertainment. In 2008, he created something called Sketch Coloring. This is where he takes a sketch cover of any comic book and colors right on the actual cover with special markers. This was his way of creating a sketch. Since most colorists really don't sketch "traditionally" (like Jim Lee, Micah Gunnell and so on...) Jeff wanted to come up with my own way to give something to the fans so they can take home and have a "one of a kind". Sketch Colorings do just that. No two Sketch Colorings are alike (even if he were to color the same cover 100 times for 100 people). Did you know? Jeff has made it into the Top 5 in the Favoriate Colorist category of the Eagle Awards. You can vote for him in the Favorite Colorist category (question #8) here. | 3/23/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

The series, co-written with Cindy Goff, and based on her experiences, told the story of Cathy Grant, a Peace Corps volunteer stationed in Central Africa in the 80's, chronicling her trials and tribulations as a 'stranger in a strange land'. Illustrated by artist William 'Seitu' Hayden, the series garnered much praise for its depiction of real people in unreal situations. TALES FROM THE HEART spawned two full-color one shots published by Epic, Marvel comics' creator-owned label, and the latter, Bloodlines, was nominated for two Eisner awards in 1993 (BEST SINGLE ISSUE, SELF-CONTAINED STORY and BEST GRAPHIC ALBUM - NEW). Since then, Nieves has worked for a number of publishers, including Marvel (HELLSTORM, PRINCE OF LIES), Caliber (ORLAK, EDGAR ALLAN POE'S THE BELLS), Comico/Northstar (COLD-BLOODED), and Moonstone (THE PHANTOM, WELCOME BACK, MR. MOTO, VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE). Currently, Nieves is working on THE APOCALYPSE PLAN, a graphic novel drawn by Dan Dougherty, to be published by Transfuzion Publishing, a company he co-founded with former Caliber publisher Gary Reed, as well as projects for Moonstone Books. Nieves lives in Chicago with his wife and two puppies, and when he isn't toiling on making repairs to the couple's 80 year old bungalow, he likes to read and watch Gene Simmon's Family Jewels. rafwrites.blogspot.com transfuzion.biz apocalypseplan.blogspot.com bobhoward.blogspot.com facebook.com/raf.nieves | 3/2/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanRelated Recap #247 - Bob Corby | Episode #247 (55 min, 50 seconds) Bob Corby About Bob Corby and S.P.A.C.E. In 1988, Bob put together the first Oh, Comics! an annual anthology title and sold it at the Mid-Ohio Con here in Columbus. There was only one table and about 13 small press publishers showed up, but that planted a seed in Bob's head. He continued with Oh, Comics! and then in 1995 Dave Sim announced his "Spirits of Indendents" tour. The very first one was here in Columbus. The following year though the Spirits show disappeared he continued exhibiting at regular conventions. But all of the sudden, all of the regular conventions became "Pop-Culture" conventions in an attempt to bring more people though the door. The net result is that the small press folks seemed to be selling less. At that point Bob decided to bring the "Spirits" show back. He wrote a letter to Dave Sim and asked if he could continue the Columbus Spirits show. Dave answered back and said to go for it but he wouldn't be able to attend because he was concentrating on keeping Cerebus on schedule. Without Dave's involvement, Bob didn't feel that he should continue with the Spirits name so he came up with the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo or SPACE. The show hit a rough patch starting out. In 2001, Bob was putting the second show together kind of going through the motions half expecting it to bomb again when he got a phone call from Dave. Dave had decided to start up the Day Prize and wanted to do it at SPACE. Bob quickly accepted his offer. The Day Prize or more formally The Howard Eugene Day Memorial Award is named in honor of Gene Day, Sim's mentor during his early years in comics. Entries are submitted by the exhibitors of SPACE with the nominees and winner chosen by Dave Sim and Gerhard. (before his departure from Aadvark-Vaniheim) With Dave's help, attendance improved and things began to smooth out. Part of the fun of the show is watching exhibitor's work blossom over the years. Some continue on with cartooning. Some move on to gallery work. Some go to work for the 'mainstream' crowd. Some of these include folks like Jim Rugg, Paul Hornschemier, Andy Runton, Alex Robinson, Mike Dawson, Farel Darymple, Esao Andrews, Kevin Huizenga, Nate Powell and John Porcellino. You never know what you'll find at S.P.A.C.E. A new favorite. An old one. Multiple genres represented. People from the webcomics world. People who just do mini-comics. The show has creators just starting out. As well as creators who have been working on their craft for quite some time. Pro... amateur... the common thread is they're all creating their own thing. Since 2008, the Day Prize has been merged with the Joe Shuster awards, but in 2009, Bob began the SPACE Prize. A juried festival award given to the best small press comics at the show. Entries are culled from submitted works at the show. | 2/23/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanRelated Recap #245: Steve Scott | Comic artist Steve Scott's work can currently be seen on "Batman Confidential, "X-Men Forever" series with writer Chris Claremont and a recent Green Lantern special project at DC Comics. Not to mention that Steve is also the ONLY artist tapped by DC Comics to do any work relating to "Batman Forever," depicting the now legendary turn of Heath Ledger as The Joker. Steve's work is featured on the Blue-Ray disc release of the movie! But then, Steve is no stranger to media tie-in's. His work has also often been seen on the television show "Smallville" and in other special projects for DC Comics. As well as doing some darn good likenessess for the recent "Indiana Jones--Tomb of the Gods," comic book series for Dark Horse to tie-in with the recent Harrison Ford movie! In fact, George Lucas liked Steve's work so much that he purchased most of the originals to keep for himself! Beginning his comics career at Malibu Comics and his wildly popular stint on "Razor" for London Night, as well as "New Warriors," "Hourman," and "JLA" for Marvel and DC Comics--With a resume like that, one wouldn't think that up until recently, Steve led a duel life as firefighter by day and artist by night-- for more than sixteen years, in fact! Even then, it took one horrible event to bring those two identities together. On September 11, 2001, he watched, with the rest of the nation as the Twin Towers fell. Soon afterwards, DC Comics published "The Worlds Finest Comic Book Writers & Artists Tell Stories to Remember." Steve was selected among the few to contribute to this historical collection, which was later exhibited, and is now archived, at the Library of Congress. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina and his work as a firefighter in Buloxi during that catastrophe, Steve decided to pursue comic work full time, relocating to the renowned community of artists in Atlanta, Georgia. Immediately, Steve's work began to appear in the pages of "Shadowpact," "The Creeper" with writer Steve Niles, "Batman Legends of the Dark Knight," and "Checkmate." He got a particularly special kick out of bringing to life some of DC Comics strangest characters like Detective Chimp, Rex the Wonder Dog, Rag Man, The Phantom Stranger and many others. Recent and current projects at Marvel Comics, and DC Comics include working with industry legends Louise Simonson and Chris Claremont on the titles "Magik" and "Exiles," the "Marvel Adventures" line featuring Fantastic Four, Avengers, and the Hulk, work on "She-Hulk," And a Kyle XY one shot for Disney/ABC with writer Jeff Parker. In other words, he's busy making comics, which is a good thing for his ever growing number of fans. Recently returned from a signing tour in Belgium, France and the Netherlands, look for more of Steve's work in several secret projects to be announced soon, including the upcoming "Ajax" series. CleanRelated Recap #241: Lora Innes / Comic Creators Alliance | Lora Innes Discusses the Comic Creators Alliance Comic Creators Alliance announced today the launch of their second annual fund-raising drive to raise funds to fight against Human Trafficking. Last year's drive raised a staggering ten thousand dollars and had over eighty seven artists working together on a special image just for the event. This year they hope to top not only proceeds, but the number of artists working on the project. In the spirit of upping the odds, this year's drive will include a print version of the piece available for purchase as well as the digital download. Artists have until the end of the year to contact the creator of this project, Lora Innes, at comiccreatorsalliance@gmail.com to contribute artwork. The donation drive starts on National Human Trafficking A wareness Day which is January 11, 2011 and ends January 24, 2011. The official website for the drive is comicalliance.weebly.com. Comic artists currently participating are Adam Withers & Comfort Love (The Uniques), Crystal Yates (EarthSong), Lora Innes (The Dreamer), Billy Tucci (Shi), Scott Sava (Dreamland Chronicles) and Alan Evans (Rival Angels). As artists join the cause you can follow participants by visiting comicalliance.weebly.com/the-people.html. 100% of donations are being split between Love 146 (www.love146.org) and Grace Haven House (www.gracehavenhouse.org). To learn more about what you can do to end human trafficking visit comicalliance.weebly.com/links.html. Innes organized the endeavor after being particularly moved at a seminar on the issue. Innes states "There are currently 27 million enslaved people worldwide- more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. With this many people being affected I just couldn't sit there and not do something." SPREAD THE WORD TODAY! CleanRelated Recap #240: Erik Larsen | Russell Burlingame Talks Savage Dragon With Erik Larsen Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen has been in the comics business for over 20 years. He has worked for most of the major publishers and shows no signs of slowing down. He is the creator/writer/artist of Savage Dragon and current Publisher of Image Comics, the company he helped found in 1992. Real Name: Occupation: Legal status: Former aliases: Identity: Date of Birth: Place of Birth: Marital Status: Known relatives: Group affiliation: Base of operations: First appearance: Height: Weight: Eyes: Hair: Powers/Weapons: Special equipment: Erik Larsen Comic Book Creator US citizen with no criminal record Name Withheld Public December 8th, 1962 Minneapolis, Minnesota Married Jannie (wife), Christopher (son), Joseph (son) Image Comics Oakland, CA When he was born 6' 3" 210 lbs. Brown Blonde None Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 2H pencil, Staedtler Mars Plastic Eraser, Hunt 102 nib and Higgen's Design ink. Uni-ball pen, Pentel Rolling Writer. Home Run Pies. Origin: As a child growing up in Bellingham, Washington and Albion, California, Erik Larsen created seveal comic books featuring versions of a character named 'Dragon.' He eventually published a fanzine, which led to his doing professional work on a comic book called Megaton for creator Gary Carlson. It was here that he introduced the Dragon, a super powered superhero, to the comic-reading masses. After a multitude of mailings, showing his work, Erik became aquainted with Jim Shooter, who was, at that point, Marvel's Editor-in-Chief. Erik eventually met Jim at a convention in Chicago and Jim was impressed enough with Erik's work that he consented to co-plot a story with him on the spot. That story was a battle between Marvel Comics characters Hulk & Thor. Although it wasn't actually published until years later, it did impress a variety of Editors enough to get Larsen some more high-profile work in the funnybook field. Erik jumped around various books in this part of his career. He did an Amazing Spider-Man fill-in story at Marvel, a few issues of DNAgents for Eclipse, and he eventually took over the art chores on DC's Doom Patrol. Soon afterwards, he left DC and moved on to the Punisher for Marvel. Five issues of that book was about as much pain as that poor Minnesota boy could stand. Erik wanted to write and when a Nova serial was given the thumbs up to run in Marvel Comics Presents with Erik as the writer/artist, he gladly left the Punisher. But it was not to be! The powers that be had other plans for Nova and Erik's yarn didn't fit in with the impending New Warriors series. Editor Terry Kavanaugh gave Larsen an Excalibur serial to draw for Marvel Comics Presents while the poor bastard waited for his big break. When ever-popular artist Todd McFarlane left his artistic duties on Amazing Spider-Man, Larsen was chosen to be his successor. That run was astoundingly well-recieved, and included popular stories like 'The Return of the Sinister Six', 'The Cosmic Spider-Man', and 'The Powerless Spider-Man'. Although he was comfortable with his position as Amazing Spider-Man penciller, he was frustrated drawing other people's stories. Larsen found that his ravenous desire to write had only gotten stronger. He left Amazing Spider-Man, quite pooped. By this time, the New Warriors was going full tilt and Erik tossed together a proposal for a Nova ongoing series. While he waited for it to get the nod, Todd McFarlane left the new Spider-Man title that he had launched. Erik was called upon once again picked up the torch - and he ran with it. Larsen created a memorable albeit brief run on that title, despite a traumatic event in his personal life - his house burned to the ground, destroying all of his chi | 1/19/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanRelated Recap #201 - Erik Hendrix / Carpet Bomb Comics | Carpet Bomb Comics with Erik Hendrix Erik Hendrix is a Creator and Writer who has been reading comics since the age of six & writing since the same, but 2008 brought the two together. His influences are diverse, ranging from years living and working around the military to a childhood filled with guns & computers on one side and b-movies and fantasy novels on the other (and that's just the tip of the iceberg). His education is as diverse as his upbringing with a BS in Information Systems, minor in programming, but has taken classes ranging throughout Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Music, and even Administration of Justice. Somehow aspects of all of these various influences make it into his works. These days, Erik lives in Oceanside, CA, with his lovely wife, Amanda, who (don't tell anyone) reads comics and is Erik's #1 fan, too. Erik has credits in anthologies, three iPhone books in the works, two magazines, Faction through Carpet Bomb Comics and other books in production and in the works. carpetbombcomics.com | selfpubmag.com | zedura.com You can also follow him on his blog at The Last Bard's Blog | 6/3/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanRelated Recap #181 - Tom Stillwell, Toy Boy and Unscrewed | Tom Stillwell Tom Stillwell is the founder of Spinner Rack Comics. He started Spinner Rack in 2005 with one simple goal: Make fun superhero comics readers of all ages could enjoy. No, not kiddie comics. All age comics. These days we mostly have two kinds of comics. Comics for adults and comics made just for young kids. There's very little in between. Tom wanted to create comics that parents could sit down and read with their kids. Or that an adult could read on their own. Or a teenager could enjoy. Comics for everyone. Remember so vividly the days of buying comics off a spinner rack and how much fun those books were, Tom set that as his goal... bring back fun. The Fun is Back with Spinner Rack!!! Leading the way with his first series Honor Brigade and follow-up Toy Boy Specials, Spinner Rack Comics has been strong out of the gate providing solid stories that really do appeal to all ages. | 3/17/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanRelated Recap #172 - Mike Cavallaro | Tom Brazelton is the writer and illustrator of Theater Hopper. He lives in West Des Moines, Iowa with his wife of 9 years, Cami, their 2 year-old son Henry and 7 year-old beagle, Truman. He works professionally as a web consultant for a large financial institution and has an educational background in graphic design. He is a self-taught web designer. Tom's movie taste range from populist to erudite. He enjoys dumb comedies like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Airplane!, classics like Citizen Kane and Rear Window and more contemplative fare like Lost in Translation and Once. He would not be a card-carrying geek if he did not admit to loving all things related to Star Wars, Indiana Jones or comic books. He greatly enjoys movies like Spider-Man and even Dardevil (despite how awful he knows it to be.) He will wet his pants in nerd glee if you talk about that new Iron Man movie. Animation is an interest of his as well and anything from Pixar is gospel (yes, even Cars.) He considers The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Spirited Away to be the best examples of the medium. Bow down to Brad Bird and Hayao Miyazaki. Tom is also a student of comedy and is quite enamored with the recent crop of Judd Apatow "frat-pack" comedies. He'll give a pass to the most awful Will Ferrell movie and is convinced that Michael Cera is "going places." Mark his words. He also highly advocates the classics like Young Frankenstien, Blazing Saddles, Stripes and The Blues Brothers. Mel Brooks, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray are all names you should know. When not obsessing about film, Tom also enjoys music. He counts Elliott Smith, Fugazi, Rollins Band, Helmet and Ben Folds among his favorite artists. He is also a casual reader who enjoys the works of Douglas Coupland, Sarah Vowell, Nick Hornby and Jim Carroll - but will probably get just as excited talking about comic books written by Brian K. Vaughn, Matt Fraction or Robert Kirkman. If that weren't enough, he'll talk your ear off about some of his favorite TV shows like The Simpsons, Lost, 30 Rock, The Soup, Saturday Night Live and Modern Marvels. Why Modern Marvels? Because he is white and getting old. When he's not writing, drawing, watching movies, listening to music, reading, watching TV or working, Tom enjoys spending time with his family. He only sleeps when he absolutely has to. | 1/13/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanTara Normal with HC Noel | Featured Guest - Howie Noel About Howie - HC Noel is an artist, a writer and an all around amazing creator. From illustrations to caricatures to the stories he tells, he's a talented individual we're thrilled to have on the show. His work includes titles such as... Mr. Scootles - When two college students watch a cursed film reel starring the forgotten 1930's cartoon character Mr. Scootles, they unknowingly set off a chain of events that could lead to Hell on Earth. Featuring a cast that includes a beautiful skirt-wearing demon, a bloodthirsty professor, a warrior angel, Judas, and the Devil herself. Mr. Scootles is a mystery-filled tale that is a tribute to the art of animation and its creators. Vincent - Meet Vincent. He's a brilliant painter and a brilliant murderer. Watch him create as he destroys. Each copy of this book is handmade and comes complete with a Vincent mini-scarf bookmark. Just about as cool as a mini-comic can get! Tara Normal (Webcomic) - Tara is a licensed paranormal investigator who solves the bizarre, otherworldly mysteries that haunt each episode using her inherited supernatural abilities. In each small town in America, unexplained phenomenon occurs every night. Hauntings. UFO reports. Elvis sightings. The one person best suited to solve these mysteries is an extremely intelligent teenage girl named Tara Normal, whose greatest gifts are a host of paranormal abilities and a quick, deadpan wit. Daring to investigate super secret government warehouses even after her curfew, no task is too dangerous for Tara Normal. Through her investigations of the extraordinary, Tara hopes to one day solve the greater mystery of who her birth parents are, and whether or not her abilities played a part in their decision to give her up for adoption. Guided by her mysterious spectral friend, the Shadowman and encouraged by her adoptive father, magic store owner Abe Normal, Tara's ultimate quest is for the truth. Each time Tara proves a ghost story is real or confirms the existence of extraterrestrials she feels vindicated by knowing that the world is full of wonderfully uncategorizable people and things. It validates her pride in her abilities and her lack of shame about embracing what is considered strange by society. Tara's spooky adventures first lead her to a quiet farm in western Pennsylvania where she seeks to uncover the facts behind a simple farmer's claim that aliens are raiding his pet cemetery. Her next case brings her back home to Maryland to investigate the cryptozoological mystery, the Goatman, and its connection to a young couple mysterious murdered on Crybaby Bridge. As her investigations continue, she will have to face a werewolf, pirate ghosts, more aliens and her toughest adversaries of all, skeptical adults. Her search for the truth brings her closer to danger when a mysterious FBI agent with evil intentions discovers Tara has a connection to the paranormal other than simply investigating its mysteries. www.hcnoel.com | www.taranormal.com | twitter.com/hcnoel | 11/25/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanDead Duck with Jay Fosgitt | <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="swf/player.swf" id="audioplayer1" height="24" width="280"> <param name="movie" value="swf/player.swf" /> <param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&soundFile=http://media.libsyn.com/media/comicrelated/relatedrecap0164.mp3" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <param name="menu" value="false" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> </object> Featured Guest - Jay Fosgitt About Jay - Raised on a steady diet of Muppets, newspaper comics and classic television (which, thirty years ago, was just called "television"), Jay's taste for pop culture developed early on. For no specific reason, he took to drawing at age two, and evidently was pretty good at it. Two years later, there was no doubt in his mind that he wanted to be a cartoonist when he grew up. Working towards that goal, he won awards in grade school for his art, corresponded with my idol, Jim Henson, and began getting some positive attention for his work. High school held similar successes, ushering him into his earliest forays in freelance commercial art and professional caricaturing, and garnishing me even more attention and awards. In college he saw his comics published for the first time in his school paper (the Delta Collegiate, which ran his "Highschool: Part II", "Cartoon Ruckus" and "Chicken Strips" comics for five years) and began correspondence with cartoonist Greg Evans (of "Luann" fame), who became his professional mentor. After he transferred to Central Michigan University he got further experience in cartooning with the publication of two new comics in his school paper (CMLife, which ran his "Mother's Goofs" and "Waste Products of a Warped Vision" comics for three and a half years). It was also at CMU that he met the love of his life, Laura Tanner, who, for the first time ever, gave him something to cherish that he didn't create on a sheet of paper. Today he's a self described "moderately successful cartoonist" living in mid Michigan with his true love, very happy and always looking forward to creating something new. His first graphic novel, Dead Duck, is about to be released through Ape Entertainment in December. www.jayfosgitt.com | apecmx.com/deadduck/ | amazon | 11/18/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanLauren Mondaro, Stephen Lindsay, Ham and Eggs | Featured Guests - Stephen Lindsay and Lauren Monardo About Lauren - Lauren Monardo first splashed onto the comic scene in Jesus Hates Zombies: Those Slack Jaw Blues with friend and collaborator Stephen Lindsay. After completing three JHZ tales and additional artwork, Lauren and Stephen went on to develop their new ongoing comic The Slightly Askew Adventures of Inspector Ham and Eggs. Second only to working on comics is Lauren's love of storyboarding! Lauren's first storyboard revision job was on the World Leaders/Granada Kids production "Super Normal". From there Lauren took a storyboard/animatic position for the "League of Evil" Net 10 commercials. These experiences ultimately lead to her position as Storyboard Revisionist on the hit Cartoon Network series "Venture Bros." About Stephen - Who am I? Well, I'm a husband, a father, a writer and a fairly average dude living his life as best he can. That's about it. I was born and raised in Rochester, New York where I still live. I went to SUNY Fredonia in Western New York and graduated with a degree in English. After college I dabbled in filmmaking - writing, producing, directing and editing no-budget flicks along with my best friend Michael Bartolotta. Film will always be a love of mine, but it burned me out really quick. After a few years of constantly struggling to find the resources to try to tell the stories we wanted to tell on film, I'd had enough. But the desire to tell stories is a strong one. If it takes hold of you, you'll have the desire all your life. So I needed a new outlet for my storytelling. One that wouldn't have me away from my family so much and one that wouldn't require constantly begging for funding. It was around that time that I rediscovered comics. Books like 30 Days of Night, The Goon and The Walking Dead really opened my eyes to where comics had gone since I stopped reading them as a kid. And I was impressed. Really impressed. So I decided to see if I could make a comic happen. Luckily, I live in the wonderful world of the Internet and was able to connect with terrific artists from all over world. So that's how it all started. Where I go from here is anyone's guess. All I know is that as long as people keep reading my stuff, I'm gonna keep writing it! | 11/11/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanIndy Comic Book Week | Featured Guest... Jake Ekiss, one of the principal organizers of Indy Comic Book Week, stops by to chat up the "call to action" that is this end of year event for independent and small press comics. What is Indy Comic Book Week? Quoting their official site for all the details, most of you know that Diamond Comic Distributors has announced they will not ship any new comics for the last week of December. As this company is a primary distributor of comic books in North America, event organizers took what was a sad week without our favorite mainstream titles and retooled it as an opportunity to fill this vacancy with independent and small press comics allowing the creators to claim the week as their own. Indy Comic Book Week challenges writers and artists to self publish new material for the week, and offer it to their local stores. Event organizers ask retailers to take this as an opportunity to showcase local independent talent on the new release shelves. They're also encouraging fans to break from their buying habits and try something new. "Raise your fist and proudly declare that comic books are more than an industry, more than a handful of corporations - it is a creative outlet for independent-minded artists and storytellers. This last week of 2009 belongs to you. Power to the people. Right on." | 10/28/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanComic Creator and Novelist Greg Rucka | Over the past weekend, I had the great pleasure to spend a few hours hanging out with Ron Fortier, Bill Gladman, Raichal Gladman, Mark Maddox, Rob Davis and others at Pulpfest (www.pulpfest.com)! "The Summer's Leading Pulp Convention," PulpFest 2009 was a new and improved version of the venerable convention of years past catering to fans and collectors of vintage popular fiction and if what I saw was any indication, it was a massive success. During the event, as part of the con's The New Fictioneers programming, Ron Fortier tooks to the stage and read a chapter from his latest Captain Hazzard novel,Cavemen of New York. If you don't know Ron, you must be new to Comic Related as he is one of the site's true founding fathers. Ron has also been a professional writer for over thirty years, best known for his work in the comics field but quickly making an equal name for himself in the world of pulp. In comics, his Green Hornet series for Now Comics is fondly remembered. With artist Rob Davis, he launched Airship 27 Productions, a company devoted to producing new novels and anthologies starring classic pulp heroes from the thirties and forties. Among these is a series based on the 1938 one-shot pulp hero, Captain Hazzard. That, as they say, is where our story (or in this case podcast) begins! | 8/8/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanChris Claremont For The Hour | Chris Claremont has encountered more success than most writers ever dream of. His stories have achieved best-seller status, won numerous awards, and are trend-setters for the industry. Although best known for his work on Marvel Comic's X-Men series, he has written other seminal characters such as Batman and Superman; originated several creator-owned series; is published throughout the world in many different languages; authored nine novels; and even had his first video game premiere in Spring 2006. His initial unbroken 17 year run on Marvel Comics The Uncanny X-Men is the stuff of industry legend. During that tenure he took a lackluster title and transformed it into the dominant, best-selling title in the industry. His run culminated with the launch of the new title, X-Men, whose first issue sold over 7.6 million copies. No one has yet come close to breaking this record. It is a conservative estimate that Chris has sold in excess of 500,000,000 comics, world wide. | 6/10/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

This is not only for the obvious reason of that is where we feed our “addiction”, but also because they become like a second home to us, a place away from our everyday realities where we can become lost in fanciful things and where discussion of topics that might illicit vacant stares or raucous laughter elsewhere, are giving true, insightful and in-depth thought. It is a place to hang, to be part of the “tribe” again…a watering hole…an oasis…or maybe a little piece of nirvana placed strategically in a strip mall.
