Podcast Description
This podcast feed is connected to the Reverse Thieves blog and encompasses our audio musings on anime, manga, conventions, and anything else that comes up. The Speakeasy is an ongoing conversation between the two of us about themes, trends, and concepts present in anime and manga and along side that sometimes there will be a critical analysis of fandom. We sometimes have guests as well. S.W.A.T. Reviews are where we watch the first episode of a series and then immediately sit down a record a review podcast. The reviews are five- to ten- minutes long and entirely off the cuff. Crime Scene Investigations are random bonus podcasts that we record live from various events. There is no regular schedule for these. We will put them up as quickly as we can when the opportunity for one of these occurs. We suspect they will mostly be from conventions but we might work in some interviews and conversation from NY events as fate allows.

ExplicitREPOST – The Speakeasy #004: The Pink Lady, Invasion of the Beautiful Boys | Various people start watching the latest show for manly men who live and fight for manly things. They notice the men in this show for guys are pretty handsome. Some of them are even gorgeous. Parts of audience cheers with delight, most of them continue to watch without batting an eye, and the rest run to their computers to rant at the injustice perpetrated against them. In this episode we begin to examine this phenomenon. Is there anything wrong with throwing some service to the females watching a show theoretically for guys? Also what makes the male fans go nuts over this phenomenon in the first place? And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink The Pink Lady *1 1/2 oz gin *1 tsp grenadine syrup *1 tsp light cream *1 egg white Shake ingredients with ice, strain into a cocktail glass, and serve. | 5/23/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitThe Speakeasy #029: Red-headed Stepchild, A Macross II Discussion | Every long-running franchise has its shinning stars; those parts of the larger series that are held up as the pinnacles of what the franchise has to offer. At the same time, every franchise also has its low points that everyone tries to sweep under the rug and forget about the best they can. Macross II is definitely not in the highly regarded category when it comes to Macross in general. It was enough of a shame on the House that Hikaru built that it was barley recognized as anything but "a story from an alternate timeline." Andrew from the Veef Show on Collection DX joins us to discuss what Macross II did to earn itself the reputation it has and in turn what it did right. And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink: Red-headed Stepchild 1 oz DeKuyper Watermelon Pucker schnapps 1 oz Jagermeister herbal liqueur 3 - 4 oz Minute Maid fruit punch Shake ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker. Pour into a chilled whiskey sour glass, and serve. | 5/17/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitThe Speakeasy #028: The Portal Two-A Talk About Sequels, Re-tellings, and Extended Universes | Drink #028: The Portal Two-A Talk About Sequels, Re-tellings, and Extended Universes Inspired by the new season of shows that include a new Lupin III, more Eureka Seven, and newbie-friendly Saint Seiya, we jump into a discussion about anime which expand their settings or characters over time. Not every series is written in a way to extend it into an ongoing franchise so when a series is ridiculously popular the creators usually have to work some major mojo to be able to create new material. The simplest way it to create a sequel or a prequel but you can't always do that especially when a story has a very hard beginning, middle, and end. Sometimes they must find a way to retell the same story with a new twist. Other times they explore different parts of the universe they created away from or only tangentially related to the original story. This podcast focuses on what works and what does not when you expand on a story. Also we give our secret wish list to what stories we would love to see more of. And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink: The Portal Two Blue Curacao Vodka Lemonade Cointreau Rum Orangina “This drink is, of course, designed to resemble the two coloured portals from the excellent sci-fi puzzle game. For the blue version, get a small tumbler and pour in 10ml of Blue Curacao, 10ml of vodka and top up with lemonade. For orange you’ll need another tumbler, this time filled with 10ml of Cointreau, 10ml of rum and Orangina. If you fancy, you can jazz the glasses up with coloured sugar rims. Simply pour some sugar into a sandwich bag with the relevant food colouring, shake them up, pour the resulting mix into a dish and dip your tumbler in. “You can mix the portals together if you like,” says James. “It’s a very orangey flavour, which we thought tied in with The Orange Box, the compilation in which the original Portal appeared.” | 4/23/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitREPOST - The Speakeasy #003: Coconut Monkey, Can you feel the One Piece love? | Drink #003: Coconut Monkey, Can you feel the One Piece love? I will mercifully refrain from singing modified lyrics to one of Elton John’s contributions to the Lion King soundtrack and merely ask in written form why is there not as much love for One Piece in the U.S. (and most of the English speaking fandom) as there is in Japan. How does the number one shonen franchise in Japan become a third tier property here? We will be looking at One Piece’s popularity in Japan, why it is so good, and what we think is holding it back. Let go on a voyage to find the answers to . . . One Piece! And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink: Coconut Monkey *1 oz. white rum *1 oz. apricot brandy *3/4 oz. coconut cream *1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice Shake and strain into a double-cocktail glass filled with crushed ice. | 3/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitThe Speakeasy #027: Pirate's Grog-The Navy, Buccaneers, and Anime Piracy | Drink #026: Pirate's Grog- The Navy, Buccaneers, and Anime Piracy Th debate about piracy in anime and manga might not be as old as the fandom but it certainly seems that way. The debate itself has changed with the size of the fandom. the accessibility of legitimate media, and the technology involved to name a few factors. But no matter what, the debate comes down to if and when do you think it is ethnically acceptable to view any non-licensed media. We are looking in on this debate since there have been several changes in the industry as well as the fandom. Both extremes in the piracy discussion see the other side as harmful zealots where as most people are caught in the middle. We weigh in our opinions and make some suggestions on what could be done to make most a little happier. And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink: Pirate's Grog 2 ounces dark rum 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon brown sugar 4 ounces hot water 1 cinnamon stick 1 slice orange Preparation: Mix all the ingredients in a mug and garnish with a cinnamon stick and a slice of orange. | 3/19/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitThe Speakeasy #026: Pucker Up, Love in the Most Unexpected Places | For our after Valentine's Day podcast we decided to go with a twist on the normal February topic. While we look at relationships in anime we examine couples in series where they are not the key focus. There is often romance in all genres of anime and we look at some of our favorites. A bit of warning in the fact that to speak about most of these relationships we have to spoil most of the series we talk about. Therefore be warned that we discuss BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, Spirited Away, Cardcaptor Sakura, Planetes, Hayate the Combat Butler, Here is Greenwood, Crest of the Stars, and Princess Tutu in part 1. And in Part 2 we discuss Gundam Seed, Eureka Seven, Gundam X, Turn A Gundam, The Vision of Escaflowne, RahXephon, and the Macross series. We ask the audience many questions so feel free to answer them in the comments. And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink: Drink 1 oz lemon vodka 1 oz lemon juice 1 candy lemonhead 1 tsp sugar Preparation: Wet the rim of the 2-oz shot glass with lemon juice and put sugar around the rim. Pour lemon juice in the glass with the vodka. Next drop a Lemonhead candy in and wait a few seconds. Lick the sugar around the rim, shoot the shot down fast. Don`t swallow the Lemonhead, but instead suck on it after swallowing the shot. | 2/20/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitThe Speakeasy #025: The Flying Penguin, A Revolutionary Girl Utena & Mawaru Penguindrum Discussion | Drink #025: The Flying Penguin, A Revolutionary Girl Utena & Mawaru Penguindrum Discussion Kunihiko Ikuhara is undoubtedly one of our favorite directors so it seemed only fitting for us to devote a podcast to two of his most recognizable masterworks. For each show we brought on a guest to talk with us a bit about the selected show. We started with Clarissa from the Anime World Order podcast to chat about Revolutionary Girl Utena. As she recently did a paper for grad school on the show she seemed the only logical choice for a guest to talk about pink-haired crossdressers. After that we talk with Patz from Insert-Disc about Ikuhara's recently concluded work, Mawaru Penguindrum. With both titles we do an in-depth analysis of characters and themes and don't hold anything back on the spoiler side of things. If you have not finished either series be warned that we give away pretty much anything that could possibly be. If you want a review just know that both shows are 100% recommended so you can just watch them and then come back and listen to the podcast. And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink: The Flying Penguin 1 1/2 oz vodka 1 1/2 oz white rum 1 1/2 oz gin 1 splash Angostura® bitters 5 oz pink grapefruit juice 1 oz lime juice 1 1/2 oz sugar syrup Preparation: Pour 1.5 ounces each of Vodka, White Rum and Gin into a highball glass over two ice cubes. Add a good spash (approx .25 ounces) of angora bitters and swirl with a metal stirring rod. Add 5 ounces of Pink Grapefruit Juice. Add 1.5 ounces of sugar syrup. Slice a fresh lime into a slice approximately 1/2 of an inch wide. Cut in half, squeezing one half directly into the drink (then drop the squeezed lime half in). Make a small nick 2/3rds of the way up the second halfof lime and use to rim the glass then as a garnish. Include a metal stirring rod. | 1/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitREPOST – The Speakeasy #002: Heart of Fire, Go Nagai VS. Gurren Lagann | Drink #002: Heart of Fire, Go Nagai VS. Gurren Lagann. This is THE match-up of manly madness made for men who marvel at mechanical monsters. The battle for the hearts and minds for those who love robot designs. A grudge match started in the land of the rising sun but ends in the home of the stars and stripes. In the red corner we have the dreamer from Wajima and the father of the Super robot, Go Nagai and Mazinger Z. In the white corner we have and the kings of boob bounce that are ready to pounce, Gainax and Gurren Lagann. Actually this is an examination of why Gurren Lagann is so popular with anime fans in the U.S. and Shin Mazinger only really has a fandom among Go Nagai fans despite seeming like shows that have almost identical appeal. What are the key factors that earn one show such a broad audience but keep people out of the other even though both show are awesome. And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink: Heart of Fire * 1 to 2 measures Whiskey * Tabasco sauce to taste Serve whiskey of choice in a shot glass, add a few drops of Tabasco sauce, and down in one swallow. Speedy intoxication may be the intended result for this fiery cocktail, but go easy with it, as not only the whiskey but also the capsaicin in the peppers in the Tabasco sauce can have adverse side effects if taken to excess. ExplicitREPOST - The Speakeasy #001: Bloody Mary, A Discussion of Strong Female Characters | Kate and Alain from the Reverse Thieves decided to go back to the roots of their blog for this inaugural podcast. They start off with the initial question: Is anime actually filled with good, strong female characters or is that dream much like a Satoshi Kon movie? The discussion then unfolds as they look at what their initial expectations of strong female characters were when they started watching anime, the realities of the medium, and its future. [6:20] We start with my shattered dreams and expectations. Rainbow Bright is a cherished childhood memory but you too can give a slutty edge to your childhood. Jem and the Holograms. She is truly outrageous, Truly truly truly outrageous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20BZID081Vk I was talking about the Pink Bishoujo Ghetto not the phenomenon of "pink-collar" professions. Lady Jaye, Scarlet, or the Baroness are great examples of strong female characters from GI Joe and American cartoons in general. Cool people will write in to give us more great strong female characters from cartoons in general. Lisa Hayes was what they called Misa Hayase in Robotech. In my defense I have not seen Robotech since I was in junior high school. Princess Allura is the name of the princess from Voltron or Princess Fala for all the Beast King GoLion purists. The Super Dimension Fortress Macross was the show that part 1 of Robotech was based on. Robotech never gave us Robotech 7 sadly enough. Oh Lynn Minmay. You are such a memorable character for better or for worse. Instead of going into more detail I will just leave you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aH0H_idMtHI I have mixed feelings on Lynn Minmay but goodness I hate you Lynn Kaifun. Kagero from Ninja Scroll is such a bizarre contrast of strong and weak in the same person. Characters like her could be their own podcast onto themselves. [13:50] We begin to wonder where did this ideal of anime being populated with nothing but strong females and the reality start to be two separate things in the eyes of fandom. The Dirty Pair is used as an example for the shame of fan service. OGT aka One Great Turtle aka Caleb Dunaway. Might as well | 11/16/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitS.W.A.T. Review - Guilty Crown | With the success of the S.W.A.T. reviews last season we're trying it again with the autumn line up. The premise of these reviews is simple: watch the first episode of a series and then immediately sit down to record a review mini-podcast. The reviews are five- to ten-minutes long and entirely off the cuff. As always we only review new shows (so no sequels or continuations) and try to avoid anything that just looks outright awful. These are the last two (for us) of the new season: Listen - Episode 1 of Guilty Crown from Production I.G with the opening "My Dearest" by supercell and is streaming on Hulu. | 10/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitBatman, Spider-Man, Luke Skywalker, and Naruto All Under One Roof - Pre-NYCC Podcast | It is once again time for one of the biggest conventions on the East coast for any and all geeks, nerds, gamers, and otaku. The 2011 New York Comic Con and New York Anime Festival is at the Jacob Javits Convention Center and it is bigger than ever. This year it is going to be 4 days and take up the entire convention center. Comic companies of all sizes are going to be bringing their A-game along with plenty of TV, movie, book, and video game materials as well. The New York Anime Festival is just a small portion of the larger convention but we are still getting Makoto Shinkai, Hiro Mashima, and Junko Takeuchi as well as several premieres and industry panels. That is more than most conventions outside of the Top 10 Anime Conss would ever dream of having. So like last year we did a little mini-podcast detailing our plans. So if you see us at any events feel free to say hello before we run off to our next event. As a helpful tip: they don't seem to be updating the website as often as necessary, especially for Japanese guest info. For autograph sessions check here. | 10/12/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Customer Reviews
Great podcast and brilliant hosts
I've been listening to the Reverse Thieves for a while now and I find it indispensable when looking for a sounding board for opinions and insights into manga and anime. Kate and Alain are great hosts and the guests, special reports and reviews they do support the even larger written "Investigations" portions of the website.
Great way of getting into anime and manga without worrying about being swamped.
Excellent Podcast
This monthly podcast is an excellent information source that makes sure not to just be reviews but to take an in-depth analysis of shows and news. They manage to get a range of opinions from the anime fandom which makes for excellent listening, one of the best anime podcasts around.
