Podcast Description

Named after a popular 19th-century minstrel song that stereotyped African Americans, "Jim Crow" came to personify the system of government-sanctioned racial oppression and segregation in the United States. Listen to these compelling first-hand accounts by people who experienced, endured, and survived Jim Crow. None of the following people is famous, but all are noteworthy in their unique abilities to face -- and, often, thrive under -- extremely difficult circumstances. These are their stories.

Excellent Resource

I am an educator. To have actual audio feed of individuals who encountered these experiences is a beautiful thing. Reading about this paart of history in a social studies textbook is not as powerful as this Podcast. I know for a fact that this will touch the souls of many students and spark great discussion. Thank you iTunes!!!

Excellent Pod Casts

Compelling stories. I would like to have more to listen to and understand the effects of prejudice on the regular person. As people die, due to age, this history will be lost, unless it is documented. Some of these are funny (i.e. the blood transfusion) and some are sad (i.e. father having his wages stolen from him by the employer). However, they all chronicle how horribly we can treat and feel about each other and miss the greatest understanding of all...that we are all in this tigether to help one another.

Amazing history for my iPod

I was delighted to come across these personal stories of life under slavery. Amazing that this content is free and accessible to download. Hope they've got more like it coming soon.
