CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 14: Keep It Metal, Baby | You'd better pray to whatever deity you hold dear because on this episode, we've got Baby Metal. I don't know what sick, Akiba-frequenting, J-Pop-obsessed mind cooked up the idea to start a grade school girl dance troupe backed by heavy metal, but I simply can not turn away from it. Neither, I suspect, will you. There's a ton of other new music on this episode from the likes of Perfume and Asian Kung-Fu Generation. We'll also hear from three of bands represented by Buffalo, New York-based Good Charamel Records. They've got a new band called Tricot that I'm pretty stoked about. There's also TsuShiMaMiRe and Molice. Speaking of Molice, they have a new site out for their brand-new album, Neugravity. A few things I mentioned during the show: If you want to get into some of the Good Charamel bands, you might want to check out their new sampler album I Love J-Rock II (which I mistakenly refer to as "I Heart J-Rock II" on the show). Don't miss this epic music video for Asian Kung-Fu Generation's "Haruka Kanata." While you're at it, here's a little more information about the band's music festival, Nano-Mugen Fes. CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 12: After SXSW, I Need a Space Vacation | Yes, it's true. Somehow I've survived another SXSW here in Austin, Texas. I've spent the last five days fighting exhaustion while rocking out to a non-stop barrage of Japanese music showcases. As per usual, I'm wiped, currently in possession of a massive stack of CDs I did not previous own and yet totally ready for next year. So excuse me if I wax a little nostalgic by playing some of the bands I heard at SXSW on this episode. Don't worry, we've got some brand new stuff to get to as well. A few things I mentioned in the show: Kyarypamyupamyu's video for "Candy Candy" is guaranteed to make you smile. Peelander-Z also has a new video for their song "Star Bowling." Also, if you're wondering if Saito Johnny's cover of "Video Killed the Radio Star" is a cover, it is. It was written by The Buggles. It was also the first music videon on MTV. CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 11: More Japan Nite/SXSW 2012 Musicians Than You Can Handle | We are one week from Japan Nite! That's right, the annual Japanese music showcase that kicks off at Elysium in Austin, Texas during the South by Southwest (SXSW) music conference, is happening on March 16. To mark the occasion, I've collected tracks from all the Japan Nite bands as well as a few of the other Japanese bands coming to SXSW for this special, SXSW edition of Nihongaku Radio. Keeping all the various Japanese music performances going down at SXSW straight is an exercise in futility. To help alleviate that problem, I'm writing a post (come back tomorrow) guiding you through the who, the when and where to make sure you don't miss out on any of these great performances. Also, if you're not going to be in Austin for the Japan Nite showcase during SXSW, don't fret! The Austin show is the first in a tour that will continue through Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles before concluding in Las Vegas. Get to one of those shows! I'd like to extend my gratitude to Audrey Benten and the bands of Japan Nite 2012 who were nice enough to send their music to me for use in this episode. This episode would not exist without you. Thank you very much. By the way, doing two episodes in two weeks was no easy task–and I'm not finished yet! Come back for episode 12 on March 19. I'm giving myself a few extra days in the schedule to recuperate from SXSW. As always, thanks for listening. Want more Nihongaku Radio? Check out previous episodes right here on Nihongaku. You can also find the show on Ani.me, a great site for all your anime, manga and Japanese cultural needs. You can also subscribe to the podcast feed via iTunes. CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 9: L’Arc en Ciel All the Way Across the Sky | We've got a lot of new music to get through this episode. Porno Graffiti has a new track called "2012Spark." Chatmonchy's back with a new theme song for an anime about a roman architect who travels through time to a modern day Japanese bath house. It's crazy! I've also got a new track (and a really old track) from L'arc en Ciel. I mention in the episode that Japan Nite is coming up. If you live in Austin, TX, you're about a month away from the annual Japan Nite showcase at SXSW. The subsequent tour will hit New York, Chicago, San Francisco, L.A., and Las Vegas. For full details, check out the official Japan Nite 2012 site. Want more Nihongaku Radio? Check out previous episodes right here on Nihongaku. CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 8: I Can’t Pronounce This | Another episode of Nihongaku Radio!? Duh! This time I get down with some new tracks from The Pillows and Avengers In Sci-Fi before committing J-pop suicide with a little help from Kyarypamyupamyu. A few things I mention in the show: Patrick Benny has an excellent write-up of a Tower Records performance by Kyarypamyupamyu. Check it out and follow his blog. Great stuff. If you liked the Tomato n'Pine take on ZONE and want to hear the original group, head on over to Nihongaku Radio Episode 7. A big shout out to anyone who found the show from Ani.me. If you're not in the know, Ani.me is a fantastic anime, manga and Japanese culture site. Like Nihongaku, it's a labor of love—and it shows. I was fortunate enough to be approached by Ani.me to see if I'd be interested in sharing Nihongaku Radio with their readers. A little syndication if you will. From now on you'll be able to find the show by going to Ani.me or (as always) by checking it out right here on rockoutjapan.com. Here's to more listeners and more shows! CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 7: I Think I’m Going to Be Polysick! | Holy hell! It's the first podcast of 2012. My resolution for the new year: listen to more Japanese music. It's important to make achievable goals for oneself. This time we've got a mix of new tracks and old favorites. And for the first time ever on the cast, we'll hear some live tracks. I mentioned in the podcast that I would leave some links in the show notes to a bit more information about Polysics. Here's a Polysics concert review I wrote in 2010 for Phoenix New Times. I also wrote a Q&A with Polysics for Phoenix New Times shortly before Kayo, the band's former keyboardist, left. Nihongaku Radio Episode 7 Intro: "Yuke! Japan does crank out some good Christmas music and we've got three examples of on episode seven. Someone has to write some new Christmas tunes. We Americans sure as hell aren't doing it. I mentioned a few things worth noting in this episode. If you dig Shonen Knife's Christmas single, "Sweet Christmas," you'll be happy to hear that you can download another Shonen Knife Christmas song for free. CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 5: The Rock Episode | That's right! Welcome to the rock episode. As you might have gathered, it rocks particularly hard. Don't worry, there's an electro-dance section in there to balance things out. You know I like some bass. Let's get to it, shall we? In this week's episode, I mentioned a few interesting bits I promised to link to in the show notes. First up, if you're interested in a free download of "Flare" by Boris, you'll want to read this. I assert that MAA's video for "Ballerina Brain System" is Lady Gaga-esque. Check it out and tell me I'm wrong. Also, you can check out a remixed version of Kiyoshi Sugo's "Knocking On Your Door" by checking out his site. Nihongaku Radio Episode 5 Intro: "Yokubou wo Sakebe!!!!! CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 3: FLiP It and Reverse It | How long does it take to drive a moving van from Tempe, Arizona to Austin, Texas? Try about 18 hours. That was the grim reality I faced less than a weekend ago. Of course, that reality was made even more grim by the fact that your standard moving van comes equipped with a radio. That's it. Put your CDs in a box and kiss them goodbye. They won't do you much good until after you've arrived. That said, there were a few tracks running through my mind during that long haul through the desert; tracks like "Two of Us" by Azusa and "Oh Darling" by FLiP. You'll hear those two and 10 others in this third installment of Nihongaku Radio. A couple of things I mentioned in the podcast: Shonen Knife is currently on tour in the States. If you're in Austin, Texas come on out and see them at Red 7 on Oct. 29. I'll be there screaming like a fan girl and snapping photos. Check out the rest of the tour schedule on their official site. As always, please help me build a better Japanese music podcast by leaving your suggestions and requests in the comments below. Nihongaku Radio Episode 3 Intro: "Crazy Girl" - BENI (Buy It!) CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 2: Does this Clench & Blistah Look Infected? | Man! Two weeks has gone by in a flash! When I put together the playlist for this week's episode, I tried to vary up the genres as much as possible. For example, I don't listen to a lot of hip-hop. Usually I'm content to alternate between Japanese rock bands and electronic groups; or bands that blend the two sounds. On this episode, I said to hell with that. Get too comfortable and you might as well be dead, right? A couple of things I mentioned in the podcast: Read about Kylee and her double life in this post. I wrote about White White Sisters in my review for this year's Japan Nite. Crazy Ken Band's video for "Ippai Ippai is awesome. You can check it out on Tokyo's Coolest Sound. CleanNihongaku Radio Episode 1: Podcast This! | Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to interview Zac Bentz. Mr. Bentz is a critically-acclaimed writer, a musician and a true Japanese music aficionado. None of those are the reason I wanted to talk to him. I interviewed Mr. Bentz because he is the mastermind of what was until very recently a critical pathway to exposing Western fans to new Japanese music: Japanator Radio. On July 30, Japanator Radio and Zac Bentz officially called it quits in a blog post on Japanator.com. By the end, Japanator Radio had served up 169 episodes; that's four years of work. Sadly, except for downloaded episodes tucked away like precious treasure on the hard drives of dedicated fans, that legacy; the work is no longer available. Japanator.com pulled the plug. Blog posts for the old episodes are still there, but click on the streaming or download links and get an error message. In his closing post, Bentz said "I hope I've at least left you with a deeper respect for the modern Japanese music scene, as well as the tools to continue on your own path of discovery. And who knows? Maybe the show will return in the future in some form." I hope it does. For the last two years, I've anxiously waited for every episode. I burned them to CDs to play them in my car. I listened to them while jogging. I found out about a great many bands I probably never would have heard otherwise. Not having another episode of Japanator Radio to look forward to already sucks. And I'm not alone. Western fans are now without a valuable resource; a regular, curated look into modern Japanese music. Decent, regularly-updated Japanese music podcasts are rare even in the vast sea of information that is the internet (believe me, I've looked). So, here's the deal: I'm doing my own podcast called Nihongaku Radio. I'm going to release an episode twice per month. For now, I'm doing a four-set format with three songs each. Mostly I want to focus on newer music and bands that are planning to tour the U.S., but anything's fair game. I'd also like to do some interviews and possibly have a guest or two on the show talking about Japanese music and maybe even a bit of culture. The debut episode features a few tracks and bands I've been writing about here on Nihongaku; bands like Okamoto's, Boom Boom Satellites and Peelander-Z. So give it a listen. Let me know what you think the podcast needs. I promise to listen. I promise to keep improving. I promise to stick to the schedule...at least until Japanator Radio gets back on air. Nihongaku Radio Episode 1 Intro: "Stardust" - Piko (Buy it!) "Pee-Kaa-Boo" - NoaNowa (Buy it!) "A.B.C.Disco" - The Telephones (Buy it!) "So Many Mike" - Peelander-Z (Buy it!) Note: In case it wasn't obvious in the post, Nihongaku Radio's format is based largely on the format originally created by Japanator Radio and Zac Bentz. | 9/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

すごいpodcast!!
This podcast made me smile all morning! ^_^
Nihongaku Radio Continues to rock my face!
This podcast came just as hope was fading for a All Japanese Music podcast (after the passing of Japanator Radio) but Jonathan MAcnamara not only took the reigns, but rode this burning Oni out of the ashes and onto the celestial plane. I can't recommend it enough. Come for the J-pop but stay for the Giant Robot theme song!
Listen to it!
So glad I stumbled onto this podcast. My long travel trips and random times of the day have been filled with very enjoyable music.
