Check it out! (http://youtu.be/kNz8msJronE) RPPR friend, Pagan Publishing has a Kickstarter going on. Take a look at it. (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/460966263/bumps-in-the-night) Arc Dream has a Kickstarter for Sense of the Sleight of Hand Man, a Call of Cthulhu Dreamlands campaign. (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/arcdream/the-sense-of-the-sleight-of-hand-man) Synopsis: The World of Darkness is a massive family of role playing games spanning from 1991 to today. We invite Jason and Aaron, both regulars from the RPPR AP podcast, to discuss the wide range of horror games. As we are more familiar with the old World of Darkness than the new, we spend more time discussing that the new World of Darkness but neither side is neglected. We also discuss how to jump in the World of Darkness, common pitfalls for running games in this universe and some of our favorite books or settings for it. Oh and of course, the metaplot. Tom also has a letter, and we have shout outs and a horror related anecdote from a listener email. Shout outs: * Drifter Broken Road: (http://www.drifterseries.com/) A post-apocalyptic Western. Shoot outs in the ruins of a bombed out world. * Kindred the Embraced: An ill-fated television show based on the role playing game, Vampire: The Masquerade. * Destroyer: A horror movie starring Anthony Perkins. * Feed: A dystopian sci-fi novel about inserting the Internet in your head. It was my introduction to the One Roll Engine and the source game for my first two books, Curriculum of Conspiracy and Road Trip. So in this episode, Tom and I discuss playing the game. 1001 uses for Zombies seminar at Gencon 2011 | (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/wp-content/uploads/artifical-169x300.jpg)At Gencon 2011, I ran a seminar on how to use zombies in role playing games - not just as low level enemies to fight but as elements of drama. I also went into how to world build with zombies. They can be used in nearly any genre as enemies, obstacles or even unlikely allies. Enjoy! I've also included the two handouts I made for the seminar: 1001 uses for a zombie in role playing games (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/wp-content/uploads/1001-uses-handout-v2.pdf) If you liked this, then perhaps you might be interested in buying my book? Get your print copy autographed by the RPPR group or get the PDF for only $2.99 (http://www.zombiesoftheworld.com/the-book) Synopsis: We've been talking about adventure and campaign design lately, so we thought it would be appropriate for an episode on horror campaigns and how to run them. The pacing for a horror campaign is different because characters in these games tend to wear down through attrition. Thus, you have to take into account their reduced capabilities when designing adventures or plan for a new way to insert new player characters when the existing ones die or go mad. Furthermore, less is more when it comes to horror. A slight aberration from the mundane is often more terrifying than random tentacle monsters. Tom did not write a letter but we do have shout outs and anecdotes. Shout outs: * Nostalgic Critic: The Hauntin (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/32771-the-haunting)g - find out which was the best version of this haunted house movie. * Z.N.A: Journey: (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0057U3THY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=rolplapubrad-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B0057U3THY) A zombie apocalypse ebook. RPPR Episode 64: Adventures in Adventuring | (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/wp-content/uploads/300x250_060711_umberto_1_green.jpg)News: This episode is sponsored by Audible Books. Sign up today and get a free 14 day trial and audiobook. (http://www.audiblepodcast.com/roleplaying) Zombies of the World is on sale during October! Save $5 off the print edition or $2 off the ebook edition. (http://www.zombiesoftheworld.com/the-book/) Synopsis: Adventure design for long term campaigns is different than designing for a one shot scenario. Keeping up with the entirety of a complex ruleset is impossible for a campaign so you must determine what rules to keep track of and what to ignore. RPPR Episode 63: Stylish Substance | Ad: Critical Miss magazine edited by Jonny Nexus. (http://www.criticalmiss.com/issue11/index.html) Synopsis: Adventure design is a complex topic so we'd thought we would delve into it once again. In this episode, Tom and I discuss the difference between good design choices and style choices. While good design is applicable to any genre of RPG scenario, it is possible to make choices in creating an adventure that only work under certain circumstances. The choice to emphasize one aspect of a game over another isn't necessarily right or wrong. It's a style choice. Hack and slash versus political intrigue? Style. Dungeon crawling versus mass battles? Style. Tom also has a new letter entailing the virtues of various cinematic firearms. Shout outs: * Americus: (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1596436018/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=rolplapubrad-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=1596436018) A graphic novel about a student dealing with a book banning. Excellent writing and art. * Island of the Fishmen: Bizarre Italian horror flick about fishmen. * Cthulhu Dark: An ultra rules light RPG of Cthulhu inspired insanity. * Messiah of Evil: Public domain 1970s Lovecraftian zombie horror film * Bastion: Amazing indie RPG with unique setting, art and music * Cargo: The most Eclipse Phase-ish sci fi movie I've seen in a while * Seven Minutes in Heaven: Hilariously awkward interviews. I also interviewed George Strayton, (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0833971/) creator of The Secret Fire (http://legendsandlabyrinths.com/), a new fantasy RPG. It's a short interview but I added in place of Tom's letter. He discusses the design philosophy behind the game, his background as a screenwriter and more. So, we discuss how to take cliches like traps, prisoners and treasure in dungeons and make them new and exciting. Also, because we are horrible, horrible monsters we read another excerpt from the rpg.net FATAL review. Also, Tom was too busy to write a letter. Be sure to let him know that you like his letters. | 16 | Ruins of Lemuria – A New World Campaign Sourcebook | (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/wp-content/uploads/RoL-cover_withlogo-225x300.jpg) The New World is the grave of Lemuria, the greatest of all nations. The barbaric tribes that live in the New World now walk upon its bones, the ruins of temples and palaces, ignorant of the wisdom and power buried beneath their feet. When a colony from the kingdom of a distant continent settles on the shores of the New World, whispers of Lemuria flutter through the winds. Adventurers from the colony find the ruins and marvel at their beauty. Scholars listen to the legends told by tribal elders and connect them to ancient stories of a lost empire. Native warriors and mystics commune with spirits awoken by the colony’s arrival. The Ruins of Lemuria stir the blood of the ambitious and curious. Soon expeditions will be mounted to crack open the dusty tombs leading into the Stygian depths to learn their secrets and plunder their treasures. Little do these adventurers know that the doom that befall mighty Lemuria waits to greet them. The Ruins of Lemuria describes a massive network of ruins that spread across the entire continent of the New World, the remnants of a powerful civilization more advanced in science and magic than any other in the history of the world. Fragments of their knowledge lie deep within the ruins, along with powerful magical items and vast amounts of treasure. Needless to say, if the knowledge or magic items are found and brought back to civilization, it could change the course of history. Lemurian magic and technology is still more advanced than anything else the world has ever known. A few adventurers armed with this power can end wars, curse diseases or doom their own civilization. This supplement provides a framework to incorporate the Ruins into most high fantasy RPG campaigns. | 7/12/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

RPPR Episode 59: Bildungsroman | Zombies of the World is now available in print, PDF (http://www.zombiesoftheworld.com/store/) and Kindle format! (http://www.amazon.com/Zombies-of-the-World-ebook/dp/B005A1J6TA/) My book, Road Trip, has been nominated for an Ennie! (http://www.ennie-awards.com/blog/?page_id=2156) Synopsis: Bildungsroman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bildungsroman)is a fancy way of describing the 'youth to adulthood' genre - stories like "to Kill a Mockingbird" where the character grows from a child to become an adult or closer to an adult. Role playing games are often like these stories - characters grow from being relatively weak and naive to eventually becoming epic badasses of destiny. However, many game systems do not encourage character growth - advancement is slow, ponderous and mechanically difficult. Furthermore, most campaigns are relatively short - interrupted or abandoned for myriad reasons. If you want players to grow at a faster pace, what should you do? How is mechanical growth different from role playing growth? Tom and I discuss these issues and more. Plus, instead of a letter, Tom and I read an excerpt from the infamous rpg.net review of FATAL. It's definitely NSFW. (http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/14/14567.phtml) Shout outs * Attack the Gas Station 1 and 2 (http://www.amazon.com/Attack-Gas-Station-2-DVD/dp/B004YHK39I): Hilariously insane Korean comedies. * The Eliminators: (http://www.amazon.com/Eliminators-VHS-Andrew-Prine/dp/6301805534) An action sci-fi movie with ninjas, mandroids, cavemen, robots and time travel. Follows the conventions of RPGs coincidentally enough. * Ugly Americans: an animated sitcom about monsters and normal people living together. * Killing Floor: Steampunk/circus summer event going on right now! RPPR Episode 58: The Games of Tomorrow | Synopsis: Science fiction is an under appreciated genre in role playing games. Fantasy (Dungeons and Dragons) and horror (World of Darkness) dominate RPGs and most of the popular sci-fi games out there aren't really science fiction or are horribly anachronistic. Tom and I discuss the state of science fiction and how it is different than fantasy or horror. As the literature of ideas, sci-fi should play differently than other genres. Everything from thematic content to the design of the game should be affected. We also have a letter from Tom, shout outs, an anecdote and reader letters. Shout outs: * Phenomena: A dreamlike horror fairy tale from Dario Argento. * Dinosaur Rap: A Whitest Kids You Know comedy sketch * The Found Footage Festival: The most bizarre and surreal videos of the past. If you want to contribute art for the Lemurian Ruins - email rpprpodcast@gmail.com. Synopsis: Game balance is a tricky thing. While in some cases, it's easy to spot an unbalanced system like Palladium or Synnibarr but other times, a game's imbalances won't be revealed until you've played it for a while. So what do you when you find out that the game you're playing is unbalanced? We discuss how to deal with these situations. It's possible to change systems, house rule it so that it's balanced or use the social contract to keep things fair. Also instead of a letter, Tom talks about having a cyst cut out of him. The Ruins of Lemuria PDF Ransom was a success! We are hard at work behind the scenes creating many cool things for you (http://www.zombiesoftheworld.com) and running games over Skype for the ransom contributors. Synopsis: Rhetoric is a divisive issue in tabletop games. Where do you draw the line between a player's skill in speech and the PC's ability? Tom and I discuss how rhetoric touches on game design, running a game and player vs. player conflicts. I've also started a superheroes campaign, using Wild Talents for the rules, and this time around we have seven players. RPPR Episode 51: Info Dump | Synopsis: In fiction, revealing too much information right away is a sign of bad storytelling. In role playing games, it's often essential for a good session. Game masters have to realize that what they think the players should know is often not enough for the players to actually understand what's going on. We discuss the importance of information and how to make sure that everyone know what's going on. Tom has a letter and we have shout outs and an anecdote. Shout outs * Rise Again (http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Again-Thriller-Ben-Tripp/dp/1439165165) - a zombie novel with evil mercenaries * Police Squad (http://www.amazon.com/Police-Squad-Complete-Leslie-Nielsen/dp/B000H7JCFK) - a funny as hell TV comedy * The Unwritten (http://www.amazon.com/Unwritten-Vol-Tommy-Taylor-Identity/dp/1401225659)- A meta-fantasy epic comic from Vertigo * Gamma World (http://www.amazon.com/Gamma-World-Roleplaying-Game-Setting/dp/0786955082) - Gonzo sci fi role playing game * The Walking Dead (http://www.amctv.com/originals/The-Walking-Dead/)- an amazing TV show about surviving a zombie apocalypse Forum Shout outs * Order66 Tribute: (http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?topic=1052.0) A very special tribute for a very special forums member * Pick the Best of RPPR: (http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?topic=1049.0) Help us pick the very best RPPR material for Youtube * Pirates and Cthulhu (http://slangdesign.com/forums/index.php?topic=812.0): a winning combination! RPPR Episode 50: Danse Macabre 2: Electric Boogaloo | Halloween is right around the corner so we are once again talking about running terrifying games. RPGs can't really provide shocks like film or TV, but it's still possible to run a truly scary game by keeping a few principles in mind. Specifically, a GM should focus on presenting ambigious information, giving players some but not total control and characterizing NPCs and monsters well. Tom finally has a letter and some shout outs and a reader letter. Shout outs: * Night of the Hunter: (http://www.amazon.com/Night-Hunter-Criterion-Collection/dp/B003ZYU3U0/) A brilliant and terrifying film blending film noir and fairy tales. Robert Mitchum's preacher is legendary as the villain. * Virus (http://www.amazon.com/Virus-George-Kennedy/dp/B001NFNUG2): A 1980 Japanese post apocalyptic sci-fi film. Sonny Chiba's in it! Hard to find though. * Four Dragons (http://dianabotsford.com/?page_id=349): A new Stargate novel written by Diana Botsford. * Smother Brothers' Comedy Hour: C (http://www.amazon.com/Smothers-Brothers-Comedy-Hour-Season/dp/B001BGRWRG)omedy in an era of censorship. Funny stuff. * Salvage (http://www.amazon.com/Salvage-Neve-McIntosh/dp/B003B2UK18): A British horror film with great acting and very gameable material. * Ghost Stories: (http://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Stories-Artist-Not-Provided/dp/B000Y7WGT2/) a horror-comedy anime series. RPPR Episode 49: Morality Role Play | Morality and alignment are two of the trickiest issues in tabletop RPGs. Every player has their own perspective, beliefs and biases and they frequently come out during play. How do you deal with conflicts over moral dilemmas? We go over several possible reasons why this occurs and how to resolve it. Tom forgot his letter at work, but we do have several shout outs and anecdotes: * Minecraft (http://www.minecraft.net/): A highly addicting computer game of building and violent death, still in alpha but worth the $13 * The Daily Show: Earth (http://www.amazon.com/Daily-Show-Stewart-Presents-Earth/dp/044657922X). A book about Earth by the writers of the Daily Show. It's funny, I am guessing. * A Dirty World: (http://www.amazon.com/Dirty-World-Greg-Stolze/dp/0857440012/) Excellent film noir inspired RPG by Greg Stolze. * Brian Regan: Epitome of Hyperbole (http://www.amazon.com/Brian-Regan-Epitome-Hyperbole/dp/B001AXU1FK). | 31 | Codex of War – A New World Campaign Sourcebook | (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/wp-content/uploads/Codex-of-War-v1_Page_01-232x300.jpg) At long last, the Codex of War is finished! This is the third book in the New World Campaign setting (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/the-new-world-free-4e-dd-campaign-setting). The colony has survived its first winter in the New World, a testament to the courage and fortitude of its inhabitants, but now a greater threat looms over the fledgling settlement. While nearby native tribes have decided to live peacefully with the colony, a powerful coalition of tribes farther inland is ready to make war. Led by an enigmatic tyrant, these tribes see the colony as a cancer growing in their homeland. The brave adventurers who protect the colony must stop the coalition before all is lost. War takes on many forms. Simple and sporadic raids on neighboring tribes, civilized duels and battles that follow complex rules of etiquette and protocol, or all out war between determined foes who fight to the bloody end. No matter what type of war, the colonists have only two options: defeat the tyrant or face utter obliteration. The tyrant will not settle for anything less than total victory. | 7/20/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

RPPR Episode 45: Of Dice and Men | For this episode, we have Cody and RJ as guests and we discuss how to deal with improbable and implausible player devised plans. Have Ross run a game of YOUR CHOICE over Skype! In this episode we discuss how to add a sense of wonder to your game. Tom has realized this after running several Call of Cthulhu games so we decided that talking about the differences in structure from an action to an investigative game would be a good topic for the show. We go over how to prepare a mystery game, what you should read to learn more about them and how to run them. RPPR Presents: Doom – Repercussions of Evil | During the holidays, we got together to record some classic fanfiction for your enjoyment. First off is Tom reciting Doom: Repercussions of Evil a classic story of horror and rocket missiles. Read the entire story below the fold. John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway. John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy." Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS" There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons. "This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!" So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall. "HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons "I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill. "No! I must kill the demons" he shouted The radio said "No, John. You are the demons" And then John was a zombie. | 1/13/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

RPPR Episode 39: 2009 Year in Review | In this episode, Tom and I review 2009 in terms of gaming. The most memorable moments, games we played, games we wished we played and more. We also go over some of what we have planned for 2010 and Toms has some 'anti-resolutions' for New Years in his letter. Shout Outs * Eclipse Phase Quick-Start Rules (http://eclipsephase.com/eclipse-phase-quick-start-rules) * Dead Snow (http://www.deadsnow.com/): Nazi Zombies plus college students FTW * Russian versus fights (http://www.youtube.com/user/presola88#g/c/F1024743B7124DD7) - crazy cartoons of various people fighting to the death * Tetris God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVFCbK0JbUo) - a funny video from college humor * We got That B-Roll (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SItFvB0Upb8) - as long as it isn't too specific Song: New Year's Resolution by Bill DeRome. Ab3 Rant 01: The Team That Couldn’t Shoot Straight | THE GUY WITH A JETPACK AND A HIGH POWERED RIFLE: When combat broke out he would zoom up into the air and start sniping. He had a kind of code against killing, he only killed villains if they fought back, or sassed him. Ab3's first proper rant is now immortalized by RPPR! Listen to find out the worst heroes ever made in a horrible superhero campaign. This rant was originally posted on rpg.net. RPPR Epsiode 38: Fight me or Give me a Quest | (http://www.slangdesign.com/RPPR-AP-Podcast.jpg)If you are a fan of our Actual Play episodes, head over to the brand new RPPR Actual Play Podcast. (http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/) It will feature a new AP episode every single week! We've already got over 11 hours of Call of Cthulhu ready for download. Don't forget to comment on the episodes or post about them in our forums if you enjoy them. As you might have realized, it's been a while since we've done an episode. I've had to move, get the Goblin Hulk PDF out (http://slangdesign.com/rppr/2009/11/rpg-pdf/the-goblin-hulk-a-new-world-campaign-sourcebook/) and set up the new podcast feed. Fortunately, the Goblin Hulk has already gotten some good reviews (http://www.neuroglyphgames.com/?p=625), so if you haven't, be sure to check it out. But all is now well so we can go back to the basics: gaming advice, shout outs and Tom bitching about the announcer voice. In this episode, we focus on improving a game by talking about NPCs who aren't enemies or quest-givers. Many GMs forget to include this type of NPC, thinking of only the bare essentials in their game, but a great game needs NPCs who just do their own thing. I also go over some game design advice as described by Jordan Mechner (http://jordanmechner.com/blog/2009/11/designing-story-based-games/)which relates to the discussion. We also have several anecdotes, a rant about the POS movie 2012 and more! Shout outs: * Creature Feature: The Greatest Show Unearthed - horror rock music that Tom approves of. * Eisenhorn: A Warhammer 40k sci-fi action pulp novel trilogy. Very slick, bad-ass fiction. * E-collapse: A new superhero RPG put out by Greg Stolze. Postmodern ideologies and super-science. * Hobocon: If you are curious about Gencon, check this documentary about it. Interesting but flawed. * Time Travel T-shirt: A very useful t-shirt. * L4D2: The bestest vidya game ever. My Xbox Live gamertag is Clockworkjoe13 * The Room: The bestest movie ever. WATCH IT. * Black Dynamite: The most super-bad outta sight movie ever. Music: The Quest by David Cyr (http://www.myspace.com/davidcyr) Promo: Swing and A Miss Podcast. | 11/19/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Brilliant!!!
This is probably the best gaming podcast I subscribe to. It is extremely funny, well thought out and overall well done. The actual plays are very good, the sketches are gut busting hilarious, and the advice segments on better gaming, anecdotes, etc... are very well done. Ross and Tom are very good together. Give this Podcast a try, you will NOT be disappointed.
Absolutely awesome
By far the best gaming podcast available. As for all the cursing , I find it really adds that extra touch of class I look for in a podcast. " Good news I'm not fired!" I would have wrote more , but the hepatitus C is killing me.
Consistently entertaining and informative, RPPR is a must have for any role playing enthusiast.
Regardless of your level of role playing experience, RPPR has something to offer you. The hosts do a fantastic job of explaining the tricks of the trade when it comes to creating and running games that are memorable and fun. A great Game Master is like a great magician; they entertain their audience by making a fantastic experience seem to materialize from out of nowhere. What this podcast essentially does it take you beyond all the smoke and mirrors of running a game, and reveals all of the things that go on behind the scenes to make it all possible. These often include simple shortcuts or rules to being a good GM that don't require hours of preparation, and are universal enough to apply to any gaming theme or system. The Actual Play sessions are where you can hear it all come together, and where people new to role playing can actually be a fly on the wall to hear what gaming is all about and why we love it. It will make you want to pull up a chair with them and roll some dice!
