I have been truly enjoying your podcast. As a new DM and new to AD&D, I am enjoying the freedom that it offers compared to its newest edition. What I do miss are what I consider some really basic information stats, such as "how far can a person not trained in jumping" jump, or what are some basic rules for sneaking around if you are not a thief, because a human fighter, trying to learn to sneak around and dual class into thief has to learn sometime. Do you just make it up on the fly or do you really have stacks and stacks of books you reference when you are playing. I am new and I only have a couple of the basics books so some advice would be appreciated. Also, and please keep in mind that I am a novice (as the last time I played was back in college in the late eighties), do you apply the martial arts techniques to a monk, or is that just for fighter specialization? Thanks guys! DM Rob: Love the show! I've been working my way through your back catalog and I'm almost caught up. I had been listening for a long while before picking up any first edition books but I am now a convert from 4e. I recently picked up The Compleat Spell-Caster by the Bard Games. It claims to be a system-neutral supplement but it is obviously intended for AD&D and AD&D only. The alternative classes include witch/warlock, mystics, necromancers and sorcerers. The new classes are pretty neat and I would like to convert them for a Castles & Crusades campaign. The only snag is that there are only 7 levels of spells for any of the classes, but first edition and C&C have 9 spell levels. Is this normal for third-party supplements? What should I do if a player gets one of these classes to high levels and expects 8 and 9 level spells? DJ Sir Mixalot: Yo yo! Bizzie let's do a demo togetha! Seriously. I noticed you guys stopped reading reviews, what happened? Plus your e-mails answered: DM Brendon - Hi RFI, Thanks for the great work on the podcast. With all your experience, I thought you might be able to help me with some ideas on how to run a "behind enemy lines" campaign. I'd like to run one soon, where as it starts off, the place where the PCs grow up is overtaken by an enemy force, and they just manage to escape, with most of the campaign taking place in enemy occupied territory. This scenario doesn't lend itself well to the "get a quest that requires a dungeoncrawl" sort of thing that I have done before. How do I fill it up with stuff to do, and expose a forward path for them, so that they're not just wondering "What the heck do we do now?" Looking forward to the next podcast, Hello guys. Just wanted to tell you how amazing your podcast is. 10 out of 10. I live in Essex, England and have been listening to you geezers while on the London Underground to work. It's bringing loads of memories of playing d&d back in the seventies when I was a nipper. I have always been a fan since then but stop playing for many years, but you have awoken my thirst for adventure! Thinking of how those Tube trains on the underground are about the same size and shape as a purple worm. Blimey, those beasts are big. See, you have even got me thinking like a kid again. Got all my old manuals down from the loft. My wife thinks I have gone barking mad. You guys are magical, thanks for such a great show. Best wishes, DM Robby from UK. Cheers Jonathan - Talks about his campaign experiences agains Orcs and how it ended badly. April is coming up soon, and with it April Fools Day... I remember looking online a while back and finding stats for Elmo (from Sesame Street) in AD&D... I remember it being kind of creepy and hard to hit, much less kill... I think it would be hilarious hearing your reaction to it... It should be easy to find online if you decide to go with it... Nick in Everett - After going threw most of your archive on iTunes, I picked up some old AD&D books off of Amazon. Well skimming the monster manual two, I found a monster that brought up Two interesting questions. The monster in question is from Page 80, is the foxwoman. My fist question is; have any of you used the foxwoman in a campaign, and two what would you say would happen to any pore soul who was not of the specified elven woman who catches lycanthropy off of her? would they gust become a were-fox or would you turn them into a foxwoman? Thank you for your time. DM Joe - Dear RFI I am currently running a campaign of my own creation, and was wondering if you guys could think of any stand alone modules I could run my PCs through. they will be 3-5 level. I am trying to plan out my campaign as quick as possible, as they might go quickly through the other adventures I have planed. My question is, how many cantrips may be prepared for and cast each day for a first level illusionist or magic-user? I assume four, but then does that mean that the illusionist may not cast any more spells for the day from her limited set of first level spells?" From DM Chris: I have just started up a new campaign, and we are about 5 sessions in, deep underground a great mountain, and the main plot has involved them discovering that people have been disappearing from the underground city, and they've tracked it to a Deurgar group who are hewing out a keep deep in the mountain. They have gained a group of henchmen, and are about to assault the fortress. My question to you guys, is how do you make a medium to large scale assault/siege interesting, and present puzzles to make the characters really think, rather than draw their swords and run in? They have a dagger hilt built into the outer side of the left boot. This will hold a stiletto or normal dagger (a Dirk would be too thick). When the wearer of the boots is surprised from behind (for the purposes of this item, Behind is defined as from 4 o’clock to 8 o’clock), they will automatically draw the dagger and attack the surprising person/s, gaining the first strike. This will be attacking at a +2 to hit (and +2 damage) if the dagger is not originally magical, an addition +1 to hit and to damage if it is – for the first strike only. On a natural 19 or 20 will add an extra dice of maximum damage (usually 5 or 6 HP, 4 for a normal dagger and the plusses) in addition to another die of rolled damage (with said plusses). The automatic attack does not discriminate from friend or foe, only that they surprise the wearer. If the wearer of the boots notices mid attack that their target is a friend (saving throw vs. Spell DMG:79), they will deal half damage, unless they roll the natural 19 or 20, where they will make two rolls of the damage die, and double the lower of the two (although, still with plusses). These boots were created to do good. If a poisoned dagger is sheathed within these boots, or a weapon with evil alignment, they will become ritually unclean, and must be Blessed in order to function again. If this happens when someone is shod in them, they will clench tight, lessening their movement rate to 3/4 normal rate, and they are unable to run. All magical abilities and bonuses will only be available for a naturally left handed character. If a characters entire race is ambidextrous, the bonuses will apply. They are resistant to mold fungus and other damages that will occur over time, and will keep the wearers feet dry and disease free in the most putrid of waters. If the wearer is about to perform an evil attack in which they attempt to draw their dagger, the boots will not release the dagger and if a saving throw vs. Spell is not met, the dagger’s handle breaks (magical items receive a +1 for every +1 they possess). CleanShow 2 - Where to Find Original AD&D Books | In our main feature for show number 2, we talked about where to find the books and other resources for 1st edition. Of course, eBay and Craiglist were the first places we suggested, but there are plenty of resources for those of you who have lost some of the books of your youth. Troll and Toad is a familiar face to anyone who’s looked for old school game books on eBay, and they have, in fact, got a section of their site devoted to 1st edition AD&D. Noble Knight is one of Vince’s favorite retailers, and a resource for high-quality books. Powell’s Books in Portland competes with Strand Books in New York City for the title of greatest used bookstore in America, and here’s their category for used role playing games. Amazon, of course, has used books from all over the country, and searching for the book you want will typically bring up a lot of results from different local bookstores, all of which can be purchased through Amazon’s checkout. Another good source of rare and used books, in general, is Alibris.com. The convention that Vince mentioned as a favorite is Mepecon And of course, if you want to try your karmic luck and see if you can find some books thrown out by a clueless spouse or relative, why not start out by taking a few tips from my own favorite book, the classic “The Art & Science of Dumpster Diving.” Email: RFIStaff@gmail.com Website: http://RFIPodcast.com | 12/8/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

When it's good, it's great. When it's bad...
When it's good, it's great. When it's bad, well... it can be painful to listen to.
Sometimes the hosts are well prepared and enthused for their topic, and that preparation translates into a quality show. For example, Issue 31 "Psionics" was entertaining because the former host Jayson went to great lengths to give psionics a run in his own games, even though he wasn't a fan of using psionics previously. The discussions surrounding his experiences was enlightening as a result of his prep, field testing, and his comfortable way with words (gift of the gab, I suppose). By comparison, Issue 55 "Take That Crispy" was painful, just painful. The episode meanders, there's no focus and each segment just accidentally lurches into the next "well I guess that's enough about that, Table Manners is next." It's like being at a party and the DJ plays Men Without Hats's "The Safety Dance," immediately followed by Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey." Might as well punch the listener in the ear. The chemistry just fails sometimes where it's a bit too much of host Vince having an inside conversation with guest host Crispy, and host Nick isn't part of the "gang."
Where the podcast shines, and I mean really knocks your socks off, is when they have special guests. Show 5 (Matt Finch), Issue 13 (Jeff Grubb), Issue 18 (Margaret Weis), Issue 26 (Frank Mentzer), Special Insert 3 (Larry Elmore), and Issues 51 and 62 (Tracy Hickman) delivered terrific content. Not always polished or refined, but really great material. The special guests, however, are not frequent enough to make the show a consistent winner.
The hosts are, of course, unpaid fans talking about a game they love, so their levels of facility with the talk-show format vary. Host Nick is that happy sort of guy you'd enjoy gaming with, who possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Dragon magazine and all the monster hardbacks. As a host, he struggles with the back and forth interaction, and on various segments often just reads verbatim from a source, rather than free-forming his own discussion (we all already have the books and could read them whenever we want, we listen because we want to hear the hosts' ideas and be a fly on the wall for their discussions). Advance prep and notes will help greatly. When he is speaking on topics that he feels comfortable with he does well, so the key is having him focus on those topics.
Host Vince has a great deal of gaming experience, and often provides entertaining anecdotes of his past game sessions. He is not a terribly electrifying speaker though, and often fails to facilitate the interaction between members of the show. The circus needs a ringmaster to keep it going, and I hope in future episodes he takes an active role in facilitating the discussions between hosts, and between hosts and guests; segues, follow-ups, and the like.
Former host Jayson provided a great depth of understanding of the rule dynamics (bordering on rules-lawyering). What he possessed, which was a tremendous asset to the show, was his comfort with speaking. Easy flow and choice of words, guiding his thoughts to provide a steady and enjoyable dynamic to the show. He did, however, have a tendency to be pedantic, which sometimes bordered on rude, but the breadth of knowledge on the game, and is ability to relate that knowledge was invaluable.
The show producer, Matt, provides an excellent addition to the show, albeit as an intermittent guest host, primarily because he is thoughtful and well spoken, which helps guide the rocky dialogue of hosts Vince and Nick along.
The big positive prospect for future episodes lay with their newest host Will. Will is fantastic. Give that man a contract. Honestly, his enthusiasm and knowledge of the system comes shining through very clearly, as does his preparation for each episode. He has a confident manner and facility of speech that smoothly guides the show along. He does not just go with the flow, and on occasion happily disagrees with his other hosts, but will always have a thoughtful addition to support the counterpoint. More Will, please! Issue 67 "Ravenloft" was particularly good, thanks to his contributions.
At the end of the day, the listener is getting a free podcast about a fun subject, and as a pleasant way to pass an hour, it will suffice. The show is more often quite good, than it is bad. Many listeners, like myself, will find themselves nostalgically reminiscing about the 1st edition they grew up with, but may find themselves wishing for a much more polished experience. New converts to 1st edition looking for a retro experience may find themselves a little lost, but will have a chance to experience the Byzantine mechanics of old-school, which has a quality all its own. With additional show prep, hosts finding a confidence in their speech, and a facilitator taking a more active role in moderating the flow of the show, playing upon the strengths of each host, and minimizing their weaknesses, the RFI Podcast will deliver a pleasant diversion to your day.
Keep it going.
The entire podcast is formed of a very knowledgable pair, and is very informing. Both host have a history of the game and are willing to share their experience. I don't play AD&D, but greatly enjoy the show. Thank you guys for the production, and keep it going.
I Miss Jayson!
Great podcast when all three hosts are present. Merely good when Jayson is not. While I like Nick and Vince as part of the complete team I don't enjoy the content as much as when Jayson is there to pontificate on the the more technical aspects of the rules. Jayson tends to keep the show on track, adds a wit and curiosity (and much needed focus) to Nick and Vince's lighter goofiness. Honestly, I'd rather wait a longer time between podcasts provided the three hosts were present than to listen to a compromised show. Don't get me wrong, I love all three of the hosts but they function best as a team.
