| 4 | CleanVideoEncrypting Email | Email is something that everyone usesWhen email was first thought up, nobody thought the internet would be so bigAlso the creators didn't think of using email as a serious way of conversationso when they designed the email system, they didn't include encryptionanother thing that wasn't in the original spec was verifing the senderwhen the email system was tiny, and it wasn't possible to spoof someones email this was oknow, it is completely easy for someone to spoof another emailsomeone who isn't me could email you and it will look like it was meso now we have what is called signingsigning allows you to sign your email with a key, that only you knowthen the other person can decrypt that key with a publicly available key and see that it is youthis is all done through public key cryptographyNow a man named paul zimmerman came up with a company named pgppgp stands for Pretty Good Privacyinitially this was open-source and much of it still is but it has become a for pay productso a new project came up called Gnu Privacy Guard or gpggpg is completely open souce and freeit is also available for many different operating systems including the big three; linux, mac and windowsI am going to go over how to install gpg on the three main OS'sAlso, I will cover integrating gpg with different email clientsso first we are going to go over Windowsgetting email encryption with windows is one of the easier things to doyou want to go to this site and download that filethat comes with all kinds of things to get you started with email encryptionthe package has the actual encrypter gpg, it has a key manager a plugin for outlook and a file encrypterIt is easy to install just run it, and it is installednow what you are going to do is create a key pairthis is something you only have to do onceto do this lets open up WinPTselect the Generate a GnuPG Key Pairput in your real name and email addressthen put in a passphrasethen some stuff will go byyou are going to want to back up your ring to somewhere elseyou are doneyou now have a public and private keymake sure that nobody gets that private keynow you are going to want to send the public key to some key serversthis is easy to do with WinPtsimply right click on the key and go to upload to key servernow it will upload it to the one you wantso now you can easily set up encypting files and emailthere are different ways to sign emailsyou can get a thunderbird extensionalso the gpg4win includes a Outlook plug-ingenerally you will want to only sign your emailsthis is because encrypting them means that you need the other person's public keyso now that was windowslets go onto OS Xin OS X you can install with one of two waysthe easiest is to use precompiled binariesthat is the way we are going to show youthe other way is through compiling and is almost identical as the Linux installso if you are on a mac and using gpg macgpg is the place to goso first download the macgpg file itself and install itthis will install gpg for mac you can test it out by opening up a terminal and typing gpgnow the next thing you are going to want to download is the GPG Keychain Accessthis is like WinPT but for macwe are going to have to create a new key unless you did the creating on the windows sidein that case import the private and public key right from the backups that WinPT createdSo we are going to create a new onethen press nextthe default is fine choose continueI would say go up to 4096 for this next screenYou can put an expiration date if you want toI don'tPut your name and emailand then a passphrasemake sure everything is correctthen press continueIt will make the new key it might take a whileSo we are going to want to upload the key to a keyserver so go go to the key pull downthen choose send to keyserverNow that you have to key you can encrypt and ecrypt files, but lets integrate it with Mailwe are going to want the Sen:te GPGMail programthis is what integrates gpg with maildownload the file and install itwhen you do you wil | 9/29/06 | Free | View In iTunes |
