| 3 | CleanVideoGeocaching Faux Paux | Geocaching Faux Pas Andy Smith steps through mistakes that beginners and experienced geocachers often make. Accidentally damaging a container... don't mention it in the log Spoilers in logs. Logging a find when you didn't actually find the container. Submitting a cache online when you have not placed the container out yet Assuming you have permission to place a cache because it is publicly accessible Leaving caches exposed to the general population. Non family friendly language in logs. Hiding 20+ caches in a series and not taking care of them. Any cache near electrical equipment, or masquerading as electrical equipment. Finding your own caches. How about placing a cache with deliberately soft coordinates to "make it harder" - sorry i skipped Replacing a cache container with something different than is in the description, and not updating the description. Listing an event at a restaurant that's closed. Using the Scuba attribute on caches on dry land to make it easier to search for power trails. Using cheap plastic containers instead of something that will withstand the environment. Keeping travelers f-o-r-e-v-e-r instead of moving them on. Making a geocache that easily can be thought of as dangerous Lying to the police about what you are doing Speeding away from a geocache placement when spotted Deliberately stomping down landscaping or other natural flora to get to a geocache when not necessary Not replacing the geocache as found or better Putting a geocache hide where you think it should be instead of the actual coordinates. Parking where you should not be just to make the find easier Hiding a geocache in a residential are where muggles are not going to appreciate the hide location | 2/9/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

| 6 | CleanVideoCleaning the Closet | Geocaching World - Cleaning out the Closet Episode It's getting towards the end of 2011 and time to clean out HeadHardHat's video closet so we can have room for all the new video geocaching goodness that will be coming in 2012. While going through all the hours and hours of video clips we have three great videos to show you. Each with some interesting geocaching discussion. FTF (First To Finds): FTF Video What are they? First to Find. An acronym written by geocachers in physical cache logbooks or online when logging cache finds to denote being the first to find a new geocache. What is the big deal about them? There are a lot of people who say they are not into First To Finds. That is a shame because when you commit to a FTF hunt your heart is pumping. The anticipation of being FIRST is a very addictive sensation and then finally the satisfactions of actually being first is always fun and exciting. How can you set yourself up to become a FTF Hound? - What is an FTF Hound? An FTF hound is a common lable for FTF engrossed geocachers. In many places around the world there are groups of them that all go for the FTF the second it is published. So the race is on. FTF hounds are the reason a newly published geocache is found within minutes rather then days or weeks. There are geocachers out there with thousands of FTFs and many have driven upto hundreds of miles to get one. They are in a phrase - obsessed to be first. Notifications: Emails and Smartphones - Notifications are automated messages that can be sent to you from geocaching.com when a new geocache has been placed. - Go to your Profile on the geocaching.com website. - Under Premium Features click the Set Up Notifications link - Select Create a new notification - There you can set up conditions of the notification itself based on what type of geocache to watch out for, central place and it's radius based on GPS coordinates and the email address the notice will be sent to. *Note since most smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices automatically tell you when you get an email you now have the fastest way of getting that newly published geocache. Multicaches: Multicache Video What are they? A Multi-Cache ("multiple") involves two or more locations. The final location is a physical container. There are many variations, but most Multi-Caches have a hint to find the second cache, and the second cache has a hint to the third, and so on. An offset cache (where you go to a location and get hints to the actual cache) is considered a Multi-Cache. Give some examples of different waypoints or stages Nighttime or Fire Tacks, Hidden coordinates, A message or statement to the next stage. Are they popular in the US? Believe it or not multi-caches are not as popular in the United States as say in Europe. For the US there are some geocachers that do love doing them but you will not fusually have as many geocaching finds as you would a traditional geocache. Wonder why that is? How are multicaches different than puzzle caches? Puzzle geocaches are The "catch-all" of cache types, this form of geocache may involve complicated puzzles that you will first need to solve to determine the coordinates. Mystery/Puzzle Caches often become the staging ground for new and unique geocaches that do not fit in another category. PVC Geocaches: Fire Hydrant Geocache Video What are the good and bad points to PVC geocaches? PVC geocaches are great because PVC is used heavily just about everywhere so it makes finding a particular PVC geocache harder to key off of. The problem with them is it is very difficult to make them waterproof. Mainly because many of the screw on tops of PVC pipes allow water to enter. Many times you have to put an inner sealed geocache into a PVC geocache host. What are some of the basic componants of PVC geocaches? Pretty simple, a combinations of Tees, Elbows, Pipes, Caps and Tops. Usually put together with PVC pipe glue. | 12/24/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

| 11 | CleanVideoWinter Geocaching | WINTER GEOCACHING PREPAREDNESS It’s winter time out and that means cold weather for many of us. Depending on the climate you may find a great many challenges when geocaching during this time of year. So before you head out into the frozen tundra you might want to consider a few safety measures to keep your adventures fun for both you and your family. Urban Geocaching - Watch them roads Now depending on how you geocache in general presents certain challenges during the winter months. For example, if you are urban geocaching and you want to get a fair number of finds in a trip you will be driving from one geocache to the next relatively quickly. Not speeding per say but a lot of starts and stops. If the roads are slippery or snow covered you are going to want to make sure your car tires and breaks are in good working order. Be aware that there are usually a lot of muggles out there and you need that extra distance to stop in time. Also just getting in and out of the geocache-mobile can be a possible hazard so watch your step. Always be mindful of what could happen if your transportation suddenly runs down. Do you have blankets for everyone just in case? Geocaching on the Open Roads As much as we geocachers take for granted our vehicles while geocaching some real consideration and planning needs to be done if you are going into areas where there are not that many people around. Some areas are prone to snow drifts and can cause you to get trapped miles from the nearest help. Let’s face it, a lot of us don’t even think twice going into extreme conditions when the weather is nice. When you are playing with the dangers of winter it is a whole other ball game. So please be sure you have all the necessary items in your car to keep you and your family dry, warm and nourished if something unexpected happens. Remember that all too handy cell phone may not have signal as you go further away from cities and towns. Get stuck and you may be looking at a long walk back. Did you remember your boots? Winter in the Woods So the roads are pretty good today and you decide to do some geocaching in the woods. The scenery is amazing and you plan on spending quality time outdoors all day. Sounds great and quite frankly I wish I was there with you but did you consider what to do if something unfortunate happens? A simple 2-3 mile hike in the summer may be no big deal but in the harshness of winter an injury or getting lost could be tragic. Unexpected storms could happen with you miles from the car or a twisted ankle at the wrong time can become life threatening so go with the number one rule of geocaching, “be prepared”. Okay I know it’s the Boy Scout motto but it is a dang good one and needs to be followed… Here is a few suggestions that are pretty much common sense but it is always good to prepare for the worst. When geocaching in more secluded areas you should: Try not to geocache alone. Allow time to get back before bad weather or darkness is upon you. Let someone know where you went geocaching in case you don’t report back. Dress for winter. Just because it is sunny and nice out now doesn’t mean it will change. Carry an emergency day pack including: Dry clothes (especially socks) Water Matches Flashlight Map and Compass (GPS batteries can go weak in cold weather) Energy Bars Day Shell - If you are really on a hike and get snowed in. Geocaching is a fun and exciting game, sport, obsession for the whole family. It is up to us to take that few extra moments to make sure that we and our loved ones are safe while out there. The last thing we want is to get frostbite or worse while looking for our treasures. Being prepared for what might happen will help us most when it does happen. Be safe out there. | 11/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
