Special Edition 6: Science... sort of Theater 1 - Jurassic Park | And now for something completely different! We Paleopals figured it might be fun to watch a movie together. We also figured it might be fun for you to join us. Thus this experiment was born. So the entire crew sat down and watched the 1993 cinematic classic Jurassic Park, while simultaneously on Skype and these are the results. This show is intended as a fun and scientificially informed running commentary to be listened to while watching the movie. Jacob provides instructions in the first few minutes on how to sync up your viewing with ours then it's off to the races! Hold onto your butts and enjoy the show! Thanks for listening! Ep 113: Science... sort of - Mo' Money, Mo' Science | 00:00:00 - Jai Ranganthan joins Paleopals Charlie, Jacob, and Ryan to update everyone on the #SciFund Challenge. First and foremost, congrats to our own Kelly Weinersmith on being the very first project to get fully funded! Yay! But the Paleopals go one further and actually highlight a few projects that caught their eye. Jacob was intrigued by the dolphin with the backwards fin, mostly because he lives near a beach and this was the closest to an engineer project he could find. Charlie really liked the idea of domesticating bacteria to create petroleum products and other goodies suit our needs. If yeast can make beer, why can't bacteria make oil? Ryan wants to use social networks and cell phones to help children in Tanzania get the vaccinations they need. It's ambitious, it's complicated, and it just might be crazy enough to work! And finally, we have to give a shout out to the project that wants to investigate methods for artificially aging red wine. A very Science... sort of, kind of project. Ep 32: Science... sort of - Gets It Together | "Gets It Together" originally referred to one thing, but should really be accredited to Ben Tippett, who kept this show on track by sheer force of Canadian will and charisma. For the Science-minded and Otherwise
I am not a science-y person. I just don't have the science-mind to remember and catagorize facts. The Paleopals, however, present science news in a format that is both informative and entertaining. Interesting stories and funny hosts - they call themselves paleopals for crying out loud - make this an al laround solid podcast. I enjoyed the interactivity of their website as well, an online poll asking if Superman is photosynthetic or photovoltaic really shows their commitment to making science interesting to a diverse audience. I actually didn't know there was a difference (or that photovoltaic was a word), but I listened to them discuss it, I looked it up myself, then I had a friend explain it to me really slowly, and I learned something. Alright, I forget the difference now; but I had fun listening to them argue about it, and my ignorance did not prohibit me from voting. That's right: Science...sort of, it's for scientists...and other sorts.
Carry that torch you paleopals
Science... Sort of reminds me why scientists are some of my favorite people. This show is relaxed, entertaining, smart and knows good beer. It ties my week together nicely. Keep on keeping on.
A New Favorite Podcast
There are very few podcasts I listen to as soon as new episodes are released, that list is about 5 or so podcasts long, but when I heard Science... soft of, that list grew one more. Rarely is a podcast insanely interesting, very entertaining, and while it does bring a ton of really scientific knowledge, I have never felt left out by a word or idea that was not clearly explained immediately afterward. Of my favorite podcasts, this is most defanitely in the top 3, and I will continue to listen and help spread the word of how great this show can be.
