Each half-hour episode contains several short videos about the underwater world from a wide variety of perspectives: art, science, poetry, etc.
| Name | Description | Released | Price | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
VideoEpisode 22 Crabs and Eggs | This episode begins with a short animation from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Crabs, crabs, and more crabs are also part of the fare, along with microscopic eggs found on the beach. We'll also visit the 2011 Dive and Travel Expo in Tacoma and talk with a local diving legend, Karlista Rickerson, who has spent decades helping non-divers peer into the depths of Puget Sound. | 1/31/12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 20 Halloween | This special Halloween Episode begins with an interesting slant on the Jack-O-Lantern tradition -- a pumpkin carving contest that takes place underwater. After that, we’ll see some young people visiting one of the strangest Halloween parties on earth -- where the creatures are actually from another world! | 11/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 19 Hard Hat | On the surface, and under the surface, this episode shows a bit of the history of diving -- techniques used more than 60 years ago. The setting is reminiscent of beating swords into plowshares, a Canadian military ship turned into an artificial reef that provides additional habitat for sea creatures as well as an attraction for divers that boosts the local tourism industry. | 10/30/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 18 Perspectives | This episode illustrates that there are myriad methods of portraying the mysterious world beneath the surface of our waters. It begins with two very different ways of looking at oysters: the ecosystem point of view and a poetic perspective. These are followed by an impressionistic parody of a nature show and a, well, a nature show about sea pens and sea slugs with some of the best underwater cinematography I’ve seen in the Pacific Northwest. Then a beach in Montenegro is the site for juxtaposing the silent world with that above the surface, and another cinematographic master piece shows some inter-species relationships that even divers seldom see. | 10/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 17 Underwater Parks | In this episode, we'll look at what California is doing to protect parts of its offshore coastline -- something like the large natural parks we have on land, like Yosemite, where the wildlife is protected and where people can experience the natural splendor that is disappearing in other places. We'll also visit some of the unusual animals that live beneath the surface of California waters. Shifting our attention again to the Pacific Northwest, people in the western Canadian province of British Columbia have been embracing a new type of tourism -- SCUBA divers. We'll hear about some of their projects that are much like man-made wildlife parks, only they're underwater. | 9/15/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 16 Knowing Your Limits | This episode begins by hearing what Rick Steves, who has been taking TV audiences on tours of Europe for 15 years, has to say about the large water body near his home: Puget Sound. Then we’ll learn how marine havens can help ensure abundant wildlife, profitable fisheries, clean beaches and vibrant communities on the Oregon coast. Lastly we’ll see highlights of what goes on underwater over the course of the year below the Newport Pier in southern California. | 9/4/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 15 Ecosystem Art | This episode begins by looking at what one Puget Sound organization is doing to help prevent pollution in our waters. Then we’ll visit a very talented third grade class who made a quilt to depict many of the creatures they saw in the movie “Return of the Plankton.” We’ll briefly hang out with some of the fish in southern California. And finally, we’ll see some underwater creatures created in an artistic style borrowed from the opposite end of the earth. | 7/31/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 14 Out Of Sight | This episode begins with two short glimpses of our waters through the lenses of pollution and art. Then we’ll see some of the underwater world through the lens of a man who teaches photography for a living. After that, we’ll tour an artificial reef near the Port Townsend Marine Science Center in Washington State. Finally, we’ll warm up after all that cold water by going south of the equator for some muck diving. | 7/14/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 13 Fast Slow Free | This episode begins with a special tribute to the first two years of this TV series. After a stroll through those visual memories, we’ll take a look at Puget Sound through the eyes of some people in the fast lane, the slow lane, and even in the free-throw lane. Finally, if you don’t know what a diveathon is, you’re not alone. Stick around and we’ll take a look at one first hand. | 6/24/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 11 Harvest and Knowledge | In this episode, we’ll see one of the icons of the Northwest, salmon, portrayed as food prepared by chefs from all over the country. We’ll also see another local icon, Art Wolfe, and some of his Puget Sound imagery. We will see marine scientists setting off on an expedition. We’ll float up from the black depths to visit some strange creatures living in the green waters nearer the surface of our West Coast oceans. And finally, after all that cold water, we’ll warm up in some tropical water with a little fishy togetherness. | 6/6/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 09 Underwater Robots | There’s a variety of things we can do to look after our oceans. In the long run, they depend on two things: a good understanding of how our oceans work, and engaging tomorrow’s decision makers in caring for our waters and their inhabitants. Our first video shows how a Marine Science teacher tackles both of these challenges. His students have built devices that can see and propel themselves underwater. These are called Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). In our second video, we’ll see how scientists use similar but larger ROVs to learn about creatures that live more than a mile below the ocean’s surface in our National Marine Sanctuaries. | 4/13/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 08 Surreal Education | In Episode 8, we’ll see the wintry conclusion of “Return of the Plankton,” a movie about what’s beneath the surface of Puget Sound throughout the seasons. Then we’ll take a look at the underwater world with the help of a technique almost 100 years old. The third short video will appeal especially to elementary school age children. | 4/6/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 07 Human Structures Underwater | To shed some light on the mysteries of our waters, Episode 7 takes us from underwater sculptures in British Columbia to oil platforms off the California coast, from Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains to an island in Washington’s Puget Sound. | 3/12/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 06 Count Measure | We see a nearshore marine creature census in action, a slide show that blurs the lines between photographs and drawings, and part 2 “the Summer Season” of the movie “Return of the Plankton.” Just for a little diversity, there is some underwater romance from the tropics. | 2/17/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 05 Painting and Sharks | This episode begins with an unusual tour of the waters around Whidbey Island by an underwater photographer and artist who draws himself in his underwater neighborhood. Then seldom seen 6-gill sharks will glide past the camera, and the episode ends with part 1 of the movie “Return of the Plankton.” | 2/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoSEA-Inside: Pacific Northwest Trailer B | See surprising colors, contrasts, cold water creatures seldom seen on TV that look like they came from outerspace. These submarine neighbors are part of the same ecosystem we are -- we all share the same fate. This is a 1 minute sample of past episodes of "SEA-Inside: Pacific Northwest". | 1/21/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 04 Dead Zone Travel | This episode takes the viewers for an underwater tour from southern Alaska to the South Pacific. The tour begins with a faux submersible ride through the nutrient rich waters near Monterey, California. Then we have a look at the low dissolved oxygen problem that has many scientists concerned about the health of Hood Canal. Diving below the chilly waters of southern Alaska is a precursor to watching one of the many relationships between different underwater species in the warm waters of Papua New Guinea. | 12/6/10 | Free | View In iTunes
| 18 | VideoEpisode 02 Art And Adventure | Episode 2 combines art and adventure with “just hanging out” underwater.
