Podcast Description

The Self-Sufficient Homestead is an online radio talk show focused on becoming Self-Sufficient on the Homestead. Do not listen to this show expecting an organized structured classroom lecture and do not just listen to one or two shows and then judge it. Our goal is to cover many topics and get you to think of ways you can become more self-sufficient in every aspect, from frugality and growing your own food, to raising fish, poultry, and livestock to fermenting your own wine and beer and even your own wine coolers or even the popular Pomegranate Martinis. We think everything you can do and produce on your homestead is necessary in becoming self-sufficient. We deliver our show with a lot of fun and humor, with current news for the Homestead thrown in too. Do not judge the show by the earlier shows, because the listeners and the Queen are slowly reigning in Johnny Max, but they have a LONG WAY TO GO! -- Live Wise Today, Live Well Tomorrow! -- Johnny Max & the Queen

Entertaining / Not Educational

I was thrilled to see a podcast about homesteading and self-sufficiency as it's my main interest. Much of what I've learned is from books & magazines, but here was a potential new source of information from what I thought would be very experienced individuals given they titled their program The Self-Sufficient Homestead. I listened to four episodes and was very disappointed. Though their banter did grow on me to provide some entertainment, there was very little usable and concrete information to take forward for application. What was provided was quite basic at the lowest level and buried in disorganized banter. While I value their goal of self-sufficiency, I would have expected some solid experience to be backing the show. I would encourage Johnny Max and the Queen to read The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery, start taking some solid steps of implementing their dream and then sharing those experiences. Also, burping during the shows on a regular basis doesn't help give credibility to the homesteading movement.

It kind of grows on you.....

When I first saw the icon in the new podcasts window of iTunes I thought to myself, "what the hell are they gonna come up with next"? It took a few weeks before curiosity got the best of me and I downloaded the first show, that was three weeks ago. I remember listening to the first few shows thinking "who the hell is this guy and why does his wife put up with him, and why is anyone listening to this"? I kept listening and so should you. Admitedly, its not a perfect "NPR" type of podcast. They aren't trying to win any awards with this thing but the information is priceless. I listen to the podcasts everynight at work, they get me through it. Now I'm a believer. I've started a chicken flock, a small aquaponics experiment, I've brewed a gallon of apple cider, and have plans to grow my 13 acre farm into a self sufficient homestead. Thanks Johhny and Queen!

OMG it goes on forever

I thought this would be a good podcast but after listening to the first 5 shows hoping something useful would start getting into the discussion, all I got out of it was a headache from "Queen this, Queen that", belching, and cackling. The only thing it seemed to lack was loud flatulance and describing nose picking - maybe that would be in the shows I never got to. If they would put the beer down and put a little effort into this, it would be about 10 minutes for the information provided and keep me away from the apirin bottle.
