The SF Signal Podcast (Episode 127): Panel Discussion: NASA vs. Star Trek | In episode 127 of the Hugo Nominated SF Signal Podcast, Patrick Hester asks our irregulars to weigh in on: NASA vs. Star Trek! Expanded topic description: Does science fiction, and specifically Star Trek, lead to unrealistic expectations by the general public of space exploration, and an overall dissatisfaction with NASA in general for a perceived 'lack of progress'? Recently, Scott Pace, the current director of the Space Policy Institute at The George Washington University and a former NASA associate administrator, was asked to comment on the April 12th failure of the North Korean rocket launch. He noted that sending a vehicle into space is still a significant technical challenge, and added, “In many ways, the worst enemy of NASA is Star Trek...Captain Picard says ‘engage’ and the ship moves. And people think ‘How hard can this be?’” Filmmaker James Cameron supposedly made a similar comment about Star Trek’s depiction of space travel several years ago. This, so the argument goes, leads to unrealistic expectations in the public mind about where we should be these days on the Final Frontier. Reality has fallen far short of the galaxy-hopping future envisioned by Star Trek, and NASA takes the blame. The SF Signal Podcast (Episode 122): An Interview with Nick Hurwitch and Phil Hornshaw | In episode 122 of the SF Signal Podcast, Patrick Hester sits down to chat with Nick Hurwitch and Phil Hornshaw, co-authors of the new book, So You Created A Wormhole (Berkley Trade; April 3, 2012; ISBN: 9780425245583; $15.00). About the Book: SO YOU CREATED A WORMHOLE is a hilarious blend of science fiction and science fact. It is the world’s first and only field manual to the possibilities of time travel. With self-proclaimed nerds Hornshaw and Hurwitch as guides, readers can now learn the do’s and don’ts—and pros and cons—before embarking on an adventure through time and space. SO YOU CREATED A WORMHOLE gives readers a firm grasp of the history and science of time travel, preparing you in every imaginable—or unimaginable—way to face whatever comes your way. It is the ultimate guide to preventing a horrible death or being trapped forever in another time or alternate reality About Phil: PHIL HORNSHAW moonlights as a technology blogger when he hangs up his lab coat. A sometimes fanatical consumer of television and film as well as part-time payer of attention to Science, he has had a known fascination with time travel and its horrific effects on the human mind and body all his life. He currently lives in Los Angeles, alternating between conducting chrono-displacement experiments on Nick Hurwitch and writing about playing video games on his cellular telephone. About Nick: NICK HURWITCH read his first book on theoretical physics at age twelve and ever since, has been both fascinated by the Universe’s mysteries and content to let someone else figure that crap out. He is now a writer and filmmaker living in early-twenty-first-century Los Angeles. The imagination is his metaphysical realm of choice and although he technically lacks the credentials of a time scientist, he is happy to lend said imagination to the world of quantum physics. He hopes that publishing this book will mean no future time travelers will have to relive his awful experience in Budapest, 1903. Customer Reviews
Get to know SF personally
This podcast is a laid back, chatty, behind the scenes look at the speculative fiction genre. The SFSignal blog is fantastic, with lots of contributors and information and the Twitter feed gives up to the minute updates on happenings in the world of SF.
On the podcast they review books and ideas, talk to authors, have discussion panels etc. It is a great way to get to know the personalities behind some of the books you read. But talk is not limited to books. They also talk about movies, TV shows and comic books. Powered by the "functional nerds," listening to this podcast is like sitting around with a bunch of friends talking about speculative fiction, with the added bonus that sometimes the authors are there too.
A podcast with fingers on the pulse of the genre
Science Fiction and fantasy are a huge genre that, even for the most dedicated fan, can be difficult to navigate. How do you know what is happening? How can you find out about interesting books, personalities and ideas in the world of fantasy and science fiction?
Sf Signal is invaluable in this regard and is really two podcasts in one.
One set of podcasts are interviews with writers, both up and coming and long established, publishers, editors and other SF personalities.
The other set, their panel discussions, take on topics of interest to genre fans, ranging from Doctor Who, to the last SF book that blew their mind away.
Together, SF Signal is a valuable signpost for any SF reader in our wild and wooly genre jungle.
Essential Listening for the Genre Fiction Fan
This is essential listening for the genre fiction fan. A really great podcast from a site that is itself a great news hub for science fiction and fantasy.
