Shift Cast #63, Spiritual Awakenings are Gifts | Yooper Notes This show was inspired by Maria Erving's blog post... http://mariaerving.com/shift-in-consciousness-not-caused-by-us/ - Spiritual Awakenings are not our doing...or about "changing your mind" they ARE NOT related to the intellect, or your "free will" - We don't decide when we "wake up", become enlighted, or what have you...it more like "happens to us" as a curse/gift depending on your point of view - Being OPEN, and in the moment helps you cope and make the best of any situation, or crisis, but can't induce or hasten a spiritual event - It happens to nearly everyone as a life crisis that they are FORCED to respond to...or an amazing event that changes you forever... We discussed the two films below as examples of spiritual awakenings seen as curses and gifts... - Wake up (the film) http://wakeupthefilm.com/ - Hereafter http://hereafter.warnerbros.com/dvd/ Notes from Jindai Song by the Bellamy Brothers "Let Your Love Flow" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_Your_Love_Flow The commercial for it is from the UK, I think I saw it on one of the World's Greatest Commericals shows, and it really is one, it's for "Barkley Card" a credit type card in the UK, but the visuals and music are definately what I remember. Best commute from work to home EVAR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdXCcQZB06s It was also in a Prius ad, with trees and plants flowering as the car drives past, but I'll let you find that one yourself, it's not as cool, even though the music is the same. And folks, the literary device/word I struggled to find so hard during the show is "Allegory" The names of most characters in the bible are allegorical, meaning the names themselves are part of the teaching story. It's related to the the word parable, but has a more distinct meaning. And the story I tried to relate from memory, turns out I came pretty close, but way off, too. His name was Simeon Stylites, and he was a Christian, and is now a Saint, and it was 37 years, not 47. (Still listed as longest polesit on record in the Guinness World Book Of Records 2010) He didn't get torn to pieces as I said, he just died. I must have gotten his story mixed up with another in my head. Here's the wikipedia article, which if you're interested, is a good starting place. Remember, Wikipedia is not always accurate, but it's a good enough start. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simeon_Stylites Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #62: Connected but Alone | Mobile Devices Has the internet, social media, mobile devices, txting, et al fundamentally changed the way people connect and relate? Maybe... First, we discuss our limited use of cell phones and txting...Rick and I both have dumb phones and an iPod touch...Rick has a pay as you go mifi device that he uses on the road when the need arises... We are not addicted to our mobile devices in the same way as many others, but we both still have them and take them with us nearly everywhere we go...hmmm I (yooper) leave my phone off during school, and don't use it much...it's pay as you go... We have both noted that people that are hooked on cell phones, txting, IMing on mobile devices sometimes interrupt live interactions to keep up...and we both think that sucks...then again, we are probably a little jealous that we don't have as many "friends" (maybe?) Fear of Real conversations The ability to craft and edit everything you tweet, post, text means communication is more thought out and less spontaneous...does this cause the "Skill" of having a person to person live conversation atrophy? Maybe... In my (yoooer's) experience, the younger folks in my college program really struggled with doing presentations, some of them refused to speak in class at all...it was pretty weird... Robot Companions This is something new to me that the elderly and others in long-term hosptial stays are using robots for companionship...WOW! That means we are only a few steps away from being wiped out by the cylons!!! :-D Links discussed in this podcast... Shift Cast #61: Cure for Boredom | Legal disclaimer: This page and podcast are not a cure for anything...including boredom. This page and podcast are intended for informational and entertainment purposes only. Notes From Jindai: Rick admits many of the points that boredom can come from fear, but doesn't completely jump on board as that is the ONLY source of boredom. Listen in to this conversation, and see where you stand. From Deepak: I Am (Do I deserve to be here?) I am Blissful! (I can't feel) I Will! (I Can't) I Know! (I Doubt) I Act! (I don't know what to do) ...(more from Jindai) I just want to say, I'm not completely incurious about spirituality, but this is the point I'm at. If THE TRUTH has been reached, and understood, why should I change away from that truth? I feel I get it, and I'm done. Feel the way you feel, it's all good. Notes from Yooper This show was inspired by my realization that people are looking for ways to alleviate pain when they buy things...makes sense...boredom could be thought of as a form of pain...okay, it's not really "PAIN" more like dissatisfaction, but you get the point... Also, The book linked below by Deepak Chopra served as an inspiration as well... Distraction is not the answer Almost all of the top 10 Google results for "Cure for Boredom" include ideas for "doing stuff"...which is fine, but it really doesn't answer the question of "where does boredom come from?" From Deepak "We feel bored when we can't admit that we have desires." Rick likes the combination of curiosity and imagination...I can't disagree...I love curiosity and imagination as well... When I feel bored I like to use this little tool from Deepak: 1. I am an empty vessel. Inspiration fills me everyday, but I am not here to hold on to anything that comes to me. 2. I am here to pass energy from one state to another. Hopefully I move it from lower to a higher state, since my purpose is to direct everything toward spirit. 3. I do not have to control the flow of reality. I bend where spirit bids me. 4. The fullness of spirit, not my ego, provides. 5. If I live from the source of creation, only good can come to me. Everything from spirit comes from love. From Deepak "Passion is the natural flow of emotions." Cool little definition of what passion is...if you are bored you must be blocking the natural flow of your emotions... From Deepak: "Passion doesn't fade. It must be suppressed." Fear, avoidance, distraction are used to block passion, that could fearlessly lead us to our desires... We create boredom when we replace fear for passion...fear says to stay safe...AND safety is boring... Fear says: "You don't deserve what you desire...you will get hurt, killed, or rejected if you try to get your desires...just stay safe..." Listening to this voice will keep you safe...and bored. So, the cure for boredom is to admit that we have desires...large and small...and to little by little do small things that scare you a little bit...smile at a stranger, re-connect with an old friend, take a walk in nature...flinch forward and accept and breath through the fear that is holding you back... Ask spirit for a deeper understanding of your situation and trust that the answer will come to you when you are present and still. From Deepak: What makes an infinite moment You were open to something new. You weren't reliving the past or anticipating the future. You felt optimistic and open; you were not defended. You let it happen, whatever it was. You felt connected. Does that sound frightening to try? Impossible? Then fear and the matrix have you...the choice is yours... I choose open and connected... Shift Cast #60: Journey versus Destination | (Jindai) We accidentally took two weeks off, sorry folks, but we're back! :-D (Jindai) In this episode, we start with a destination in mind, but go far afield, proving Yooper's point that the journey is just as important as the destination. Love how that works. (Yooper) I (Yooper) brought up reading a poem that I thought was part of the Homer's Odyssey, but it turns out to be by Constantine P. Cavafy...(link below)...how to use your destination as a goal, but the real fun is enjoying the journey... http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/ithaca/ Homer's Odyssey, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odyssey Ithaca, Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ithaca (Jindai) Oh, and turns out Ithaca was THE destination, it was Odysseus' home. I had forgotten that nugget. (Jindai) Other books discussed in this eipisode: The Haj http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Haj Exodus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exodus_(novel) Dune, by Frank Herbert, and the various sequels by him and his son, Brian Herbert, are mentioned quite a bit Forest Gump, the Novel, by Winston Groom Piers Anthony, Battle Circle Series, and his other hard Sci Fi books all linked in one specific scene in the Tarot Series 1 God of Tarot (1979) 2 Vision of Tarot (1980) 3 Faith of Tarot (1980) Tarot (1987) The series omnibus as a single novel as originally intended) No wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Circle_(novels) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chthon_(novel) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_Man_and_Manta http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bio_of_a_Space_Tyrant Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #59: Benefits of Meditation | This episode was supposed to be a cage match between Yooper and Jindai...but it really turned out quite civil...oh well... I, Yooper, love to meditate...I think it's fun, relaxing, and really gets my day started on a healthy note. Jindai, does not like to meditate. He does not see the benefits in the practice for him...also he has...like many other people...convinced himself that it is impossible for him to do... Sooooo for a hoot, I decided to search out some "benefits of meditation" and see if I can sell Rick on the idea...it won't work...but there is value in healthy and respectful conflict :-D Calmer and Happier http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/200304/the-benefits-meditation This article in psychology today talks about a study in which neuroscientists experimented with people who were trained to meditate over 8 weeks and there was a control group who did not meditate. The brain scans from the group that meditated showed they were able to use meditation to shift their brain activity from the stress and fear areas of the brain, right frontal cortex and the amygdala to the left frontal cortex, which is much more prone to calm happy activity. The control group was not able to perform this shift. Health Benefits http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/features/meditation-heals-body-and-mind This WebMD article explains how a long list of health issues can be helped with just 20 minutes of meditation: Lowers Blood Pressure Boost Immune System Improve Concentration Stress Reduction Stress Management This Mayo clinic article discuss how meditation can be use to manage stress. It lists the benefits below: The emotional benefits of meditation include: Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations Building skills to manage your stress Increasing self-awareness Focusing on the present Reducing negative emotions http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/meditation/HQ01070 Keep up-to-date with all things Shift Cast! Shift Cast #58, Detox my Life | Doing this juice reboot has brought home several lessons about detoxing my life in areas other than just food and letting go of drugs beer, coffee and tobacco. Physical Level The detox on the physical level has improved my well-being in many ways... More energy Better sleep More stamina More calm and relaxed Yoga for Detox! Some yoga can help support detox!!! I didn't know that! Sweating - sauna, hot tubs, exercise Skin - I found a new soap (to me) at Trader's Joe's...it's all green and good for the environment...and I love it. It's call Dr Bronner's Castile Soap and it can do loads of stuff! So far, I can use it for: Shaving Brushing teeth Soap Shampoo there are many more uses that I have not tried yet... http://www.drbronner.com/ Also on the physical level is air and breathing...shallow breathing doesn't do a great job of eliminating toxins from your body...so I want to explore daily practices to improve my breathing...like yoga, exercise, and meditation. Toxic Thoughts Toxic thoughts are part of everyone's life, but doing this reboot highlighted many toxic thoughts that I never considered before. I will try to do a better job of monitoring my thoughts and trying to keep them positive and grounded in reality. Toxic Emotions Emotions that are negative are better faced and processed...rather than keeping them locked in...and stewing...so, this is another area of life that can be reviewed for detox... Toxic Relationships Relationships that are no longer serving you can be healed or let go of. Keeping toxic people in my life is not something I am doing much of at the moment, but this is another area of life for detoxing. Detox Lessons - Finding eating triggers - it was difficult to watch TV when I couldn't eat... I have a habit of mindless eating while watching TV... NOW I know that. - Before I started juicing, I figured Yayoi would whine about...but she said WOW!!! - Missed food for strange reasons...during the all juice days...the habit of eating was harder to overcome than hunger - I didn't worry about feeling hungry until evening I bought this detox program, that I never tried, but I did read through it and found loads of great information... Detox Box Check out the the witches view...it's about pagens and witches!!! They are all starting a reboot as well... http://www.witchesview.com/ If you are interested in the internet privacy...check out the link below... http://donttrack.us/ Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #57 Creating Information Products | Reboot Update I started the reboot early...not 27 Feb as previously announced...so when we recorded this I was on day Day 3...which included food (salad, cooked veggies, and soup) along with some juices. I was sneezing quiet a bit...not sure if that was reboot thing or just an a new allergy... Rick's YouTube Channel has a video of my juicing... http://www.youtube.com/user/JindaiHideo?ob=0&feature=results_main http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr2pGJEHHIQ&context=C3a098c1ADOEgsToPDskJ9y0Tf9jHhR5BJsLwE_UzT New Business Plan I am researching creating information products based on some great training I picked up from Dave Navarro (not the rock star) Dave's idea is to first create a audience either by yourself by doing amazing things that people love...I'm still working on that... Or teaming with other amazing people whom already have an audience...and then create products that they really want or need... The products themselves can be a ton of work to create and launch, but if there is an audience ready to buy them there is a great chance for success. Dave Navarro offered a very short-fused $20 deal right before he shut his offer down do go work for Naomi Dunford at IttyBiz...so this offer is no longer available...if Dave ever offers this again and I find out about it...I will let you know...cuz it's awesome. Dave old site is linked below along with IttyBiz... http://www.thelaunchcoach.com/ Ittybiz Naomi Dunford http://ittybiz.com/ Video Capture Software - Free http://camstudio.org/ I have been wondering what software folks use to create a video captures of a powerpoint presentations or maybe a mindmaps or an outline...and recording the teaches voices talking you through the training...Camstudio works great...and it's free.... You can also pick up free mind mapping software that makes great video captured training as well... http://xmind.net/ One can then create a transcript of the video using a transcription service or software. This can then be edited and saved as a PDF as part of the offer... The audio track can be recorded as a separate file as well, so your audience can listen on the while driving, or on a bike or exercising.... So Rick and I will be brainstorming ideas to partner will others who have an audience but don't have time to create products...we will also be creating some free products to give away when people sign up for our Consciousness NOW! newsletter...Stay tuned... This discussion made Rick think of The book below... Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance New Music We picked out this new music by Charlie Crowe on MusicAlly together...we both loved it. Shift Cast #56: Empire Building | Completed Psychology Program http://www.phoenix.edu/ This was a Bachelor's in Science...in case you think I was working on a Master's program...my last class felt a little bit emotional. I will miss the weekly interactions and mental stimulation that this program brought into my life. Even though I don't feel drawn toward a career in psychology now...I am already integrating and applying psychological principles to my life to help me grow. ...Like all things in life...there are many things NOT good with psychology...the focus on victimology, pathology, and using drugs sooner rather than later can be included in this NOT GOOD category... The positive side of psychology is that it helps people and has the potential to help more people with a few fundamental shifts in perspective...To see some example of the GOOD side of psychology check out... http://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/Default.aspx Keep up-to-date with all things Shift Cast! Sign up for the Consciousness NOW! Newsletter... Email Name Then Don't worry -- your e-mail address is totally secure. I promise to use it only to send you Consciousness NOW!. Massage Therapy School This started as a HOOT! I was looking for something fun to do with the rest of my GI Bill benefits...I found out that I could become a certified massage therapist. Yayoi and I have been getting massages lately after long car trips...they really help ease the stress, fatique, weariness that a long drive brings... Also, I have been giving Yayoi massages without knowing how for years...so I thought, if nothing else...at least Yayoi will get some really nice FREE massages from me if I learn how... Now, I am actually excited to start! I am looking forward to learning about anatomy, physiology, and all the therapies included in the program. I looking into the National Holistic Institute... http://nhi.edu/massage_school/training/core.html Juice Reboot Update I am making two juices in the morning, and it takes an hour or more to prepare, juice, and then clean up. The juicing is violent fun...here's a video of me "killing" some fruits and veggies...*evil grin* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr2pGJEHHIQ&feature=youtu.be Choice Overload - Chunking Rick learned about choice overload playing a game called Battle Nations on his iPod Touch... When he was first presented with all the choices of all varied troop types, he experienced choice overall. So, he looked up a how to play the game, he learned which categories of troops mixed together will lead to the most victories... When you look at a large number of choices...start putting the choices into categories...or chunks...and then you can reduce the number of choices you have in front of you... Empire building kit I bought the EBK from Chris Guillebeau from the Art of Non-Conformity...and I have to say I love it!!! I am not getting PAID anything by Chris for saying any of this.... The EBK is a kit to take you from wherever you are...working in a job that pays the bills, but you don't love...or you love what you do, but you want to strike out on your own, so you own the dream you are creating... The kit includes - 365 daily emails automated to ship in order - Video interviews and transcripts - PDF case studies - Specific training videos - Webinar(s) - (Product) Launch Checklist I am impressed with Chris's ability to create value from very simple uses of technology...he is not really worried about making everything perfect...The interviews were recorded as skype calls...sometimes the sound drops out, or the video is really bad quality because of the vagaries of the internet connection that Chris happened to be using from the road...none of that matters...the point is that information is valuable to me and if something was missed...he catches up...then there are always the transcripts and summaries in the emails as well. | 2/23/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Shift Cast #55, Juice Reboot Preparations | I am in prep mode for my upcoming juice reboot...this is another progress report. Quit Chewing Tobacco On Superbowl Sunday, I picked some nicorette gum to help me quit chewing tobacco. This is working quite well. I started chewing the gum like regular gum and started coughing and choking! Turns out, one has to chew nicorette gum slowly...who knew??? The withdrawal symptoms include a little bit of anxiety, headaches, and several energy lulls... The first few days I chewed loads of this gum...I am slowing tapering down to fewer pieces each day. My juicer is here!! This recipe was the 2nd juice I made after juicing two apples just to play around with it... V28 3 large Red Beets 2 medium Carrots 2 stalks Celery 4 Plum Tomatoes 4 cups Parsley, leaves and stems, roughly chopped and packed into the measuring cup 1 Jalapeno, ribs and seeds removed 12 Red Radishes I skipped the jalapeno...this is a very savory and tasty juice for afternoon drinking...next time I will get the jalapeno!! :D I was surprised how violent the juicer is...it is a lot of fun to play evil plant killing doctor...mu-who-ha-ha...die apple!!!! ;-) Cleaning up the juicer takes time, so I plan to make at least two juices at once. Preparation takes time as well...washing the fruits and veggies...cutting and peeling...if you try this...plan for about an hour or more to prepare, destroy, and clean up after making two juices. This recipe is from the site site Reboot Your Life... http://www.jointhereboot.com/index.php?lang=en Doctor check up I went to see my doctor this week for a checkup to make sure there were no issues that would prevent me from proceeding with my juice reboot plan...I still have to wait for the blood work results, but I got a green light from the doc!! Benefits so far My mental clarity is improved quite a bit during the day and even into the evening which is awesome. If I get a headache or a lull, I lay down for about 30 minutes and that seems to do perk me up quite well... I have been eating small meals along with my juices and have noticed that I don't get the "food coma" after eating when I do this. So it seems that how much you eat can be just as important as what you eat...if I cheat a little bit...I try to minimize the amount of sinful food...like sugar, meat, and dairy... Also, I have found truth in the idea of eating raw food first during a big meal...make the salad with beans and loads of raw veggies the main course...this will fill me up with the good stuff...then if I want to have a little soup, bread, meat...whatever...I won't tend to pig out because I already feel full from the salad. I sleep better...My nicotine habit had me waking up for a dose and then sleeping some more. The first morning I got up and had the nicorette gum...but after that I just stayed in bed and eventually fell back to sleep...this nicotine habit has a metric butt ton of triggers attached to it, so it will be around for a while... My energy level is improved as well...aside from the lull periods or headaches...I feel great! Part of that is noticing the absence of the food coma from large meals, but the juice/veg diet also just brings a cleaner overall psychical feeling of well being. Eat to Live Dr Joel Fuhrman developed this program that I will try after my reboot... http://www.drfuhrman.com/ Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #54, Juice Fast Reboot | Cut down on alcohol Before the holidays, I was an "at home" beer drinker: - a steady supply of beer at home - drinking a beer or two nearly every night - drink MORE at a party - Drink MORE on the weekends Right before the Holidays....in early December, I saw some folks on YouTube after a "Juice Fast"...meaning they had stop eating food and only drank juice for a short period of time...somewhere between 5 - 60 days... During this time, the body changes...one detoxes and loses weight...kinda like a rebooting of your system. Then I forgot about it and went about my Holiday binging! :-D Later, I found this movie that reminded me that I wanted to try a juice fast... http://www.hulu.com/watch/289122/fat-sick-and-nearly-dead http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/ http://www.jointhereboot.com/ After that binge, and the holidays were over...I stopped putting beer in the house. It was pretty easy. The first couple weeks, I had a beer or two during lunches with friends...then I starting thinking...you know I have stuff I want to do after lunch...if I have a beer...I will take a nap after lunch...so that beer went away too. If I drink beer now, I make sure I don't have anything I want to get done that day... Switched from Coffee to Green Tea This was pretty easy, but did cause a few days worth of withdrawal headaches. I drank green tea about two weeks, and now I am off that as well. I don't really like green tea....I LOVE great coffee...but...I don't want to deal with effects of the drug on my body right now. Eating more veggies and less processed foods For the period of the reboot, I will NOT eat meat, dairy, or processed foods...white bread, rice, etc... Now, In preparation, I am increasing my intake of raw/cooked veggies. I also changed to AkMak crackers as my bread choice. It get's tricky when eating out...but I am getting better at figuring out my best options, and then just letting go...I like clam chowder, and it has a little clam and sometimes bacon in it...I just eat it...for now. During the Reboot, I will try to do better at the elimination portion... Planning to quit tobacco I still use "dip" and I am hard cord addicted to it (think Skoal)...I know it's yucky...that's why I am quitting! :D More on this next week and how I plan to tackle this challenge... Detoxing Detoxing includes all sorts of symptoms like mental fog, low energy, headaches, and diarrhea...I have all those items to look forward to during the first 3-5ish days of the reboot period... People told me to ensure that I don't have anything I NEED to do during a fast , so I am making my start date after my last psychology class and before I start my next school program... Speaking of diarrhea...this is a "funny" account of an intense "Detox" program that I am NOT doing...but Rick and I both found disgusting and amusing...if you have a strong stomach...check it out... http://www.poopreport.com/Consumer/Content/Oxypowder/oxypowder.html Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #53 – Spiritual Development, Challenge Destiny | I found this quote in one of my psychology texts, and I really liked it... Many people, May believed, lack the courage to face their destiny, and in the process of fleeing from it, they give up much of their freedom. Having negated their freedom, they likewise run away from their responsibility. Not being willing to make choices, they lose sight of who they are and develop a sense of insignificance and alienation. In contrast, healthy people challenge their destiny, cherish their freedom, and live authentically with other people and with themselves. They recognize the inevitability of death and have the courage to live life in the present. (Fiest & Fiest, p. 343) Feist, J., & Feist, G. (2009). Theories of personality (7th ed.). New York: McGraw Hill Courage to Face Destiny I remember many times coming face to face with destiny only to shrink back and retreat. Now, I am learning to breath through the fear of destiny and to "flinch forward" despite the initial intimidation. Rick feels he is more "destiny challenged" and finds that he is currently in a stage of retreat. This ying/yang relationship with destiny has presented itself most apparently when Rick and I played the XBOX game Portal 2. I played the role of the idiot that would leap toward danger and even "game death" in order to learn and figure out each puzzle. Rick, spent more time cautiously feeling his through each puzzle trying not to "die" in the game. Death has very few meaningful negative consequences in this game, and after several gaming sessions, Rick started having more fun "dying" for fun and learning. Make Choices Being stuck in a undesirable life situation generally points towards a destiny decision that one is failing to make...if you make the choice, you cut off yourself from the past, and this can be a difficult fear to face. Learning to embrace and challenge destiny means to make those choices when they arise sooner rather than later. If one make the wrong choice, this will become apparent soon enough and then at least you know you can go back and choose again. Making choices tends to open more doors, and brings increased freedom. Choosing is more difficult today in general because we have SO MANY choices...In this TED talk, many strategies are discussed in how to make choosing easier. http://www.ted.com/talks/sheena_iyengar_choosing_what_to_choose.html Freedom Brings Responsibility Having made a choice will bring new levels of freedom in all areas of life...it also brings on new responsibilities that must be accepted in order to maintain the new levels of freedom. This can bring on a new challenge and cause some to retreat yet again. If you accept the new responsibilities, breathing through the anxiety, or finding new ways to cope are necessary. Responsibility Brings Anxiety Anxiety is neutral, it is neither bad or good...it is just is a fear of the new and unknown. A little planning to create ways to smooth the anxiety when it becomes overwhelming will help you "ramp" up to the new levels of freedom and responsibility...boredom is on one side, and freaking out overwhelm is on the other...learning to deal with both without retreating is key to facing destiny. Shift Cast #52: Spiritual Goals — Woo-woo, the watch, and everything | Science and Non-duality (SAND) Conference The organizers of the this conference are working to create a new spiritual paradigm that is informed by science. The conference includes scientists and spiritual leaders in attempt the bridge the gap between these two worlds. The Shimmering Dead End blog is how I found the SAND conference...He is presenting most of the spiritual ideas that point toward non-duality and sort of describing them and debunking them. If he is saying that most of the window dressing of various spiritual traditions become at some point a distraction, then I agree (see the idea of Makyo below)...but I also think that whatever helps someone experience non-duality...or unity consciousness...then it's okay in my book as long as you don't get stuck... The spiritual goal (if it IS ONE?) of "understanding" more about the concept on non-duality may be right for you if you are not really into the "woo-woo" side of spiritually...and are still looking for meaning that science alone can't provide. http://shimmeringdeadend.wordpress.com/ http://www.scienceandnonduality.com/nonduality.shtml Enlightenment as a Spiritual Goal To me "enlightenment" seems impossible as a spiritual goal, so maybe it's not the best spiritual goal for me to pursue. Will I ever become "enlightened"?...I doubt it... Why not? I have never seen a person walking around claiming to be enlightened...when I hear about them, people sound as if they saw an angel and get all mystical and mysterious... I'm more of a "chop wood, carry water" style of enlightened person (I'm not claiming enlightenment here). The Zen version of enlightenment includes this parable... Student: Master, What do I do before enlightenment? Master: Chop wood, carry water. Student: Master, What do I do after enlightenment? Master: Chop wood, carry water. The lesson in this parable is that enlightenment to students and masters of zen is a big deal until one attains it...then the realization is that it never was a big deal to begin with settles in and your life goes on more or less the same as it was before "enlightenment"... Declare yourself enlightened and move on already!!! :D Authentic Well-Being My current spiritual goal is more like asking myself..."Ok...so I know I AM one with everything, can't really die, and my thoughts and desires create my reality whether I want them to or not...NOW WHAT? I want to align mind, body, spirit toward more meaningful engagement with myself, the environment, and the people in my world. I like to call this spiritual goal...authentic well-being... Keep Moving Forward - Beware of Makyo Mayko is a Japanese word that is applied to ANYTHING (even things YOU LOVE!!) that keeps you from moving forward, and growing... Could be a favorite thing to do, that you just CAN'T do anymore...but can't let go of... Any opportunity to engage your attention and time might be Makyo...it might best to learn, love, and move on... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makyo Here I will make fun of myself...I'm woo-woo!!! :D Check out the video below to enjoy seeing New Age folks making fun of themselves... Overcoming Change Resistance, Shift Cast #51 | Learn to take a punch Julien Smith author of "The Flinch" (a free book!) uses the example of a boxer to overcome resistance. The idea is that a boxer will not have much success in the ring if she doesn't learn to take a punch. Most of the situations that we have learned to flinch away from don't actually hurt us physically... ...but we anticpiate some discomfort... Like having "the talk" in a relationship...I have avoided "the talk" many times... ...only to finally learn that the path leads me through the talk to the other side of it...it's not fun, but it's the only way to move on or get the relationship "unstuck" The punch might be doing something new that you are not good at...or talking to your boss...whatever it is, resistance tells you it's not safe and one better avoid it...but avoidance only delays growth... http://www.theflinch.com/ Learn the difference between an idea and execution This idea of noting the difference between ideas and execution came from Derek Sivers in his post below: http://sivers.org/multiply Playing the video game "Portal 2" with Rick in coop (cooperation) mode has taught us both about resistance and the difference between: - Having the idea and knowing it will work - Executing the idea through trial and error Rick and I both faced loads of resistance in the form of boredom and frustration solving some of the puzzles. Most of the difficulty was executing the idea...which in a way, was easier because we knew what to do and just laughed at each other failing repeatedly...great resistance training! :D When the idea didn't come...we fell into disorder and we would just starting executing madly until the idea would come to us...again through trial and error...a little more frustrating, but also more fun when the idea would show up. If you take the punch, what is the prize? Do you want that prize? There is value in just taking a punch for the sake of training and building up your "flinch forward muscles"... ...however with big decisions, consideration and asking yourself if you are willing to take the punch for it's own sake is also valuable... Sometimes I have "fallen on my sword" and taken the punch only to find an empty pot of gold on the other side of the punch... This is just a caution not to just fling yourself around without thinking about what your really want...if you are stuck though...take the PUNCH! Learn by playing funnies before you play for keeps Resistance training is available to you everyday in countless areas of life...you don't need to jump up at your boss and pick a fight and demand a raise... ...you can build up to that...play games, engage in low threat/low reward activities to build up your muscles in facing resistance... Embrace "the suck" At this link below, Leo of the Zen Habits blog talks about why he likes (crazy!) physical challenges...and he used the phrase "embrace the suck"...this is advanced resistance training...build up to it, and you can become someone who climbs mountains...not that you have to do that, but you can if you want to...;-) http://inoveryourhead.net/you-have-to-embrace-the-suck-an-interview-with-leo-babauta-of-zenhabits/ Rick and I also discussed this video on YouTube as an example of coming up with an idea that one could execute in one day... Shift Cast #50, Inducing Consciousness – Sacred Economies | Why Occupy doesn't make demands Charles Eisenstein is an author and part of the Occupy Wall Street movement. I found a video in which he explains why the occupy movement doesn't make demands. Making demands fits the old paradigm, and if the demands are met, then the movement is over... Charles says this movement isn't about removing the current one percent of people in charge... because he feels this would only lead to a new one percent...with the same old paradigm in place. He wants to cultivate a shift in consciousness wherein a one percent in charge is no longer necessary. He also points out that the 1 percent is not happy with the current economic state of affairs. The pleasant life is bereft of meaning and human connection for the rich as well as the poor...more stuff can only take you so far... http://www.yesmagazine.org/happiness/to-build-community-an-economy-of-gifts http://sacred-economics.com/ Money Economy breaks down connection In our current monetary economy, I don't need a specific person to fulfill my needs. If the person who made my shoes dies...I don't even notice let alone care...why? It's pretty obvious...this person -Lives in a place far away -I don't know who it is -I am not thankful The shoemaker is not "giving" a gift...the person has been reduced to a replaceable cog in a shoe factory. If my shoemaker was my neighbor and he was one of a few shoemakers available to me...and I really LOVED his shoes...when he died, I would know and feel sorrow. Living for Giving People are not cogs that are replaceable...they are necessary to the whole of, they are here to give the gifts that only they can provide...everyone has unique gifts that only they can provide the world...we know this is true at the level of emotion, the system we live in is not aligned with this truth. http://occupylove.org/ Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #49, How to deal with Stress | Recognize Stress Learn to recognize the psychical sensations associated with your stress response. Do you feel a tightness in your chest? Shallow breathing? Increased heart rate? Maybe it is a constriction in your gut...whatever it is...feel it and teach yourself what it feels like. Identify the cause of Stress When you are calm and centered...remember the events that caused you stress, fear, or any negative emotion. Journal or keep a log for a week or longer and identity the events that trigger your fight or flight response or just stress you out. Prepare for Stress when you know its coming Now that you have a incomplete list of known stress inducing events, prepare for these events before you engage in the activity. COWBOY UP! Avoidance is not recommended...if you go in knowing you are going to feel stress you can prepare by accepting the situation as a challenge that you need to live up to. The fear and stress will diminish each time you face it and deal with the pain, fear or stress. Deal with it, in the moment In the moment, lean forward into the stress, don't avoid or back pedal away from the stress, fear or pain. Face it, most stress is psychological and will not physically hurt you. If you ARE overwhelmed, congrats! You flinched forward and didn't die!! That's great training for the future... ...if you need to calm down...excuse yourself and find a quiet spot to re-centered yourself. Maybe a brisk walk or light exercise will help to burn off the excess energy build up...or just a few deep breaths. http://getitdone.quickanddirtytips.com/quick-stress-relief.aspx We talk a little bit about the new Green Lantern movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1133985/ The Star Trek Re-boot movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796366/ Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #48, Spiritual Development | Three Paths - Pleasure - Engagement (flow, attention, growth) - Meaning Pleasure Pleasure is feeling good because the activity fulfills a need. You can apply very little attention to these activities and you will get some pleasure...eating will feed you if you do it...fulfill a need a provide pleasure. Sex will feel good just by doing it, and fulfill a need need and provide some pleasure. You can extend and master pleasure with attention and savoring, but the essential nature of pleasure according to Martin Seligman in the TED talk below is that they are based on some fulfilling a NEED. The down side is that pleasures habituates...meaning pleasure declines after the first experience...requiring us to escalate the dosage in order to get the same amount of pleasure. The key distinction is pleasure and enjoyment are NOT the same thing. http://www.ted.com/talks/martin_seligman_on_the_state_of_psychology.html Engagement, Attention, Flow Engagement in activities that are not based on a need are in this category. The key feature of enjoying these activities (very over simplified) is attention. People who rock climb and love it...love it because of the total and complete engagement of the self. Attention is so focused on the task of "move up, stay on rock" the experience expands and makes their consciousness grow and expand. This expansive state has some key characteristics: - Unaware of self - Perception of time is distorted - The reward is the activity itself The downside of engaging in "flow" activities is addiction...we get attached and identify with things we do...even more so when we derive great enjoyment from the doing. http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_on_flow.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihaly_Csikszentmihalyi Meaning, detachment, faith Martin mentioned a life of meaning and says "it's really good"...and leaves it at that. I take this as the entry point of spirit and faith. I am a pleasure seeker and have experienced flow in many different activities...but what does it all mean? This is where we get to point our efforts toward a selfless goal greater than ourselves...a cause...god...spirit...the greater good. I guess the downside of this is becoming a tyrant or getting really attached to the cause. What to is the purpose of life? Help, serve, and love people...and to keep faith...the only thing up to you is "HOW" you go about it...if you are not doing these things...you just might be a tyrant...not that there is anything wrong with that! ;-) Rick tells a story about coming up with parody song for the song "Higher Ground" (this is the song I got stuck on in the game Rock Smith...ARRG!)...here is the link: http://jindaihideo.livejournal.com/1171.html Our Greatest Strength is accepting our Vulnerability We all Need Connection Brene Brown is a story teller and researcher...she set out to research why people all want connection and what factors block them from connecting with others. She found that most people feel Shame/Fear/Guilt/Blame and this makes them feel unworthy of connection with others...people then turn to numbing these painful feelings with all sorts of ways to avoid feeling vulnerable, and unworthy...beer, tv, sex, drugs, football, running companies, going to church, chasing around with kids...lots of doing...not so much real connecting. Then she decided to find what was different about folks that were able to make deep connections. She found that it was their ability to embrace vulnerability and accept it without questioning their own sense of worthiness. http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability.html Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #47, Fear of Dying | Not our greatest fear We discuss the Fear of Dying as ranked #6 on the top ten list of fears...the fear of spiders is higher on the list...this is curious to me, but it makes sense once you consider there isn't much you can do about death... Rick shares some fascinating stories about his fears of rejection and the fear of being forgotten or to have the word "unnecessary" on his tombstone. I think this fear is related to vulnerability and the feeling of not being enough or not worthy of notice or existence...we will talk more about vulnerability in next week's show. http://www.selfhelpcollective.com/top-10-fears.html Highlander -- Immortals want mortality... -- Ultimate wisdom - know everything -- There can be only -- I am everything/I know everything This part of the discussion is relating the fear of dying to the movie Highlander...if you have not seen the movie...here is your spoiler alert. The movie is about a group of immortal beings who battle through time and kill each other off until there is only one. The "GOOD" guys make friends against the strongest and evil "Kurgan" who they all want to keep from winning the prize and becoming the "ONLY ONE". The prize includes ultimate wisdom, the ability to hear the thoughts of others...the ability to have children, grow old and die... ...so if you are immortal, death is a prize...if you are mortal you think the prize would be immortally as in going to the afterlife and living on clouds forever... I find this to be a sort of spiritual version of the "grass is always greener" idea... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highlander_%28film%29 No escape clause - from Steve Pavlina, but after a search I can't find which podcast of Steve's where he mentions this in his show notes...if you know...please pass on a link! The "no escape clause" from Steve is the idea that if we are "consciousness" that exists outside of space/time, then we can not not BE conscious to some degree...we can forget, deny, and sleep...but we can not escape conscious existence... This makes sense to me...and because I accept it, I might as learn how to create joy, engagement, and meaning in my life...more on that next week. Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #45, Love thy Enemy | Historical figures who used love and peace to get what they want Nelson Mandela used love to bring all the people of South Africa together. He could have retaliated against those that imprisoned him for all those years in a tiny little cell, but instead he found love within himself to create a spirit of connection and expansion. Gandhi used love and peace to eventually defeat the British Empire and return India to Indian rule. He used peaceful, non-violent methods and also took a vow of poverty to show solitary with the poor people of his country. Martin Luther King loved his enemies much in the same way...through peace and nonviolent positive action toward equal rights. A perfect parable example is Jesus on the cross. This is an extreme example of responding to hate, murder, and torture with love and forgiveness. Once you except a unified world view in which all living things are literally ONE, then our biggest challenge is to re-frame how we see those we consider enemies. If we continue to see them as separate from ourselves, we will never truly love them. When we see our enemies as part of the whole of life...and as a part of our shared SELF...then we see them as confused and in need of our love, help, and support. What you resist will persist This means when you want something make a positive statement and create a mental image of that which you want. Anti-war movements create images of...WAR. A Pro-peace movement creates the image of...PEACE. Movements against domestic violence create a image of domestic violence. A movement for domestic peace creates an image of domestic peace. Shift Cast #43, Subjective Reality and Charity | We discuss the concept of charity and giving in general from the point of view of subjective reality. For fun, we relate these concepts to a recent episode of the TV show "House". The Episode starts showing a man giving a $1 million dollar donation to a charity, he then collapses in the street. Dr. House knows he is rich and is tries to convince the man to make a large donation to fund his program. The hospital will not allow the donation because of potential ethical issues related to his alturism being a symptom of his condition. Later in the show, another doctor is in need of a organ donation and the hospital does allow this rich patient to donate an organ. Do you want to read more of this post? Shift Cast #42, Subjective Reality, the Matrix, and everything | This is a continuation of the our discussion from last week about Steve Pavlina's idea of Subjective Reality...read more about it here from Steve's Blog at www.stevepavlina.com “...the perspective that your true identity is a dreamer having a dream, so you are the conscious container in which the entire dream world takes place. Your body-mind is your avatar in the dream world; the character that gives you a first-person perspective as you interact with the contents of your own consciousness". -- Steve Pavlina Facing your Fears in the Matrix Courage, fear, and fearlessness come to mind when I imagine the implications of subjective reality. In subjective reality, your friends, enemies, loved ones, and especially those you hate or fear...are really expressions of your highest and truest identity. I remember as a child realizing that when I was dreaming that the dream was "all in my head" and the monsters in my nightmares were just parts of my consciousness...so why should I fight them or fear them...I could easily jump inside them...and face them fearlessly...sort of like Neo did at the end of the Matrix when he jumped inside Agent Smith . I don't think Neo realized that Agent Smith was yet another expression of consciousness that he was one with at that point in the story. Fear then to me, when it arises, is more about moving TOWARD the fear, instead of away from the fear...I do my best to lean into it. I am referring to irrational fears, not things that would do harm to my physical body...I don't mean it's ok to play tag in traffic...or pull a tiger by the tail...but those things that I want to do, fear holds me you back...I want to learn to lean into those things. Identity in Subjective Reality Who Am I? What Am I? I dunno...but in this model of reality...whatever it is that I am, everyone and everything that IS (perceived or imagined) is that too...Demons? Yup! Hitler? Yup! Really annoying infomercial guy? YUP!! To me this identification with others helps me be more empathetic toward others and try to understand that they are doing the best they can dealing with life...everyone that shows up in my subjective experience shows up to help me in some way that may be difficult to understand right away. Like the Oracle in the Matrix telling Neo that he isn't the one...because that was want he needed to hear in the moment...in order to experience BEING the ONE later in the story. It's like the difference of explaining to someone what it feels like to BE WET, and jumping into a lake...some things one just has to experience for oneself...words pale in comparison to the experience. World Peace in Subjective Reality Every beauty pageant contestant wants "world peace"...what does that mean in subjective reality? Well if we ARE all ONE, then WORLD peace is ONE with personal peace, or inner peace... What sounds more achievable in the is life time to me is establishing inner peace for oneself and then sharing that peace with anyone who shows up. This seems to be a more effective strategy than trying to convince the other nearly 7 billion versions of "ONE" that world peace is the way. To me it seems much more doable to work on my own inner peace and sharing that, and letting the world be what it is...the more peace I can create inside me, the more peace show up in my subjective experience, and I don't have to worry about the other 7 billion parts of the whole... ...In the end of the Matrix, Neo asks for peace between the AI(s) and humans...he saw that they had become dependent upon each other and maybe he realized that the AI and humans were ONE...so when he realized his own peace...he shared it with the world to stop the war...NICE! Shift Cast #41, Subjective Reality and the Matrix | ***Sorry for the bad audio quality*** Rick did his best, but because of many issues, the call quality on this show was less than optimal. Steve Pavlina held his first "Subective Reality Workshop" in the end of October. I was NOT able to attend because of a prior engagement, but my friend KB of ktotheb.com DID attend and was inspired to start a 30-day trial to experiment with living with Subjective Reality as her primary reality model. She in turn inspired me to do this podcast...so Thanks to Steve and KB! “...the perspective that your true identity is a dreamer having a dream, so you are the conscious container in which the entire dream world takes place. Your body-mind is your avatar in the dream world; the character that gives you a first-person perspective as you interact with the contents of your own consciousness". -- Steve Pavlina Check out Steve's site to find out more about subjective reality at www.stevepavlina.com Your living in a dream world In the subjective reality model, waking life, is like a dream that moves more slowly. The world is a reflection of your self. If you are totally unconsciousness of this aspect of reality, the world you create is created from your subconscious desires. If you "wake up" to realize that you are in a sort of dream, you can influence your reality to a degree through various methods and constant reminders that "you are dreaming". Not falsifiable This is like religion in that it can not be objectively measured, proven, or said to be really true or not true...it is merely another way to look at reality that can have practical benefits. Steve Pavlina argues (and I agree) that objective reality is what most people believe to be primarily true, and that model can not be measured, proven or said to be really true either. Lucid Dreams and conscious influence on the dream world Your desires and preferences can be programmed into your subconscious mind into to bring about changes in your "dream world" reality. If left unexplored, the unconscious mind will reflect back at content with the most emotional charge at any given moment. KB used a visualization exercise and meditation to program her subconscious mind for about 30 minutes every morning with some pretty neat results. During her exercise, she visualized accomplishing her life long goal and some short term goals and feels good about those goals. Relationships are with yourself - so there are no enemies There is only one consciousness, we are all it, so we are all one. Relationships with "others" take on a more personal meaning in this model. I use this to model to tell myself that all other people ARE ME wearing a different mask...so if I have grievances with other people, what is really happening is that I am noticing a conflict with a part of myself. Shift Cast #40, Dr Who and the Ego | Shift Cast, #40 Doctor Who and the Ego We talk about a very cool episode of the New Doctor Who. The gist of the story goes like this: - The doctor runs from the bad guys (we don't know why). - He goes back in time on earth to WWII England and becomes human (...he's an alien "time lord" don't you know) in order to HIDE OUT from the bad guys for a little while. - IF everything goes right, the bad guys will not find him and die very soon (maybe like three months)...and of course, that would be good, because they are bad after all. - His Time Lord "consciousness" is stored in a watch. - His companion is charged with watching over the doctor and told to open the watch and let his "time lord" consciousness out either after the time is up and the bad guys are surely dead or if the bad guys show up... ...of course the bad guys show up...wouldn't be much of a story if the bad guys didn't show up right?!?! Here is where the connection comes...and how it asks the what is ego question... - The Doctor has to hide his true nature from the family of blood - He creates John Smith an alter ego from the Family of Blood - John Smith is then destroyed when the Doctor returns to his real nature -- Bad new for John!--he doesn't like the plan, but dies to save the world. - John Smith is like the ego or the false self and the Doctor is like your True Self http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Nature_(Doctor_Who_episode) Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #39, How to Forgive | Forgive yourself by accepting responsibility without blame People have difficulty separating blame and punishment from responsibility. One CAN accept responsibility for words and actions without deserving punishment...after all, everyone makes mistakes...it's ok. Learning to accept responsibility without beating oneself up, opens the door to self forgiveness. How to Forgive - Forgive for you first Holding a grudge often hurts the holder of the grudge more than the object of the grudge...don't forgive others for them...they sometimes don't deserve it...but YOU do. You can be completely selfish and forgive others for your own well-being. You can't fake this though...you really have to forgive them :D Connect a spiritual sense of forgiveness A spiritual sense of forgiveness reminds of Jesus dying on the cross...and forgiving the soldiers stabbing him. He knew the soldiers didn't understand what they were doing and was able to forgive them. Jesus knew death and sin are illusions, it's just a real difficult message that really has to be experienced. When you forgive people because you love them AS YOU...ONE WITH YOU...then you may experience this spiritual truth. Forgive for pragmatic reasons Forgiving yourself and others just makes sense. It will help you to let go of emotional baggage, which has all sorts of beneficial effects on health and well-being. Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #38, Learning to let go | Know your intentions This means the same things as "know what you want". It's hard to move when you don't have a destination in mind. Reconnect to your big dreams ...this is free and will serve to inspire and motivate you...The big mistake one makes when trying to translate dreams into reality is she thinks about the dream at the end of it's life...when it is all that it can be...or version 250. It helps to simplify and focus on version 0.1...the version that just does one thing that one can implement today...this podcast is an excellent example. It was created in one day and grows a little better each week. Establish a daily practice Whatever works for you...quiet time, writing what you want...feeling what it would feel like to do your dream...A quiet practice doesn't have to be official meditation...but it can be...it might be a walk, a bike ride, or sitting up in bed after you wake to be grateful for another day you are able to draw breath on earth and live. Learn forgiveness - Yourself and others When attempting to let go, which takes courage and commitment...learning to forgive yourself and others helps you along the way...this is one of those areas that doesn't make sense logically...spiritual methods generally help more than objective psychologically based methods...like the recovery movement uses the phrase..."Let go, Let God". It's ok to forgive other people for selfish motivations...if "forgiving" makes helps you be more successful, then why hold those old grudges? You are only hurting yourself??? When others hurt me...I don't forgive them because they deserve forgiveness...I forgive others because doing so helps me...I deserve to forgive others for me. Embrace the Mystery of life - don't fight it You can't know everything about anything...so don't try... Gather enough information to attempt version 0.x and move to implementation. You can learn as you go through iteration. When you embrace the mystery of life, you can laugh when it rains on your wedding day, and make it a special memory instead cursing the universe for ruining your special day. We all came from a mysteriously unknowable source before we were born...we return to this source when we die...embrace the mystery and enjoy the ride. Shift Cast #37, Conversation with Jack Mangan | Jack Mangan is a long time podcaster (see link to his podcast below) as well as a fiction writer. I met Jack through my friends at FarPoint Media when I was a fan of the Podcast Wingin' It. I reconnected with Jack this past summer during the annual Farpoint Media Pool Party in Phoenix. Jack and I spoke briefly at the party and we thought it would be fun to have a conversation about meditation. Jack shares his thoughts on his experience with using music and other relaxation audio products to chill out, relax, relieve stress. He wasn't sure if he is technically "meditating" (maybe he is maybe his isn't) but his experience to this point has made him curious enough to want to learn more about meditation practice and techniques. Rick is does not perceive the value of meditation and is convinced at this point that meditation is just not for him. Rick is challenged with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and finds that the meditation techniques that he has tried so far have induced stress. I (Yooper) think that the goal of meditation practice is very simple, to reduce the number of thoughts one experiences. Our busy lives have created a very busy state of consciousness that has been related to that of the "voice in your head". This constant river of thoughts distracts us, and diverts our attention away from remaining focused on the present moment and the task at hand. When I meditate, I don't attempt to eliminate thoughts, but just witness them and allow them to run their course while maintaining a gentle intention of being quiet, calm and present. I find that the more often I experience this quiet acceptance of the voices, and have come to identify less with the voices and more as the silent witness of the thoughts. Then, later throughout the day, when I am feeling anxious and the thoughts are flooding my mind at a very high rate, I can remember to take a breath and just seek that inner peace of the silent witness to quiet my mind and regain my focus. There are tons of meditation techniques...finding the right one for you will help you to quiet your mind and help you focus on whatever you might like to do. http://www.jackmangan.com/ http://www.ministryofpeculiaroccurrences.com/2011/06/22/tales-from-the-archives-eight-part-one/ http://www.ministryofpeculiaroccurrences.com/2011/06/28/podcast-eight-part-2/ Getting in the Gap: Making Conscious Contact with God Through Meditation (Book with CD) Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #36: How to Stop Complaining | Bullets for busy people with short attention spans! - Recognize that complaining is a habit of self-defeating thoughts - Part of the habit includes a level of self-identification with the self-defeating thoughts with can include blame - Break the cycle of self-blame -- Learn to accept the negative thoughts, just observe them, don't fight against them...Notice the gap! - Tip: Use a wristband, rubber band, ring something you can wear...and every time you catch yourself complaining, move the item to the other hand...this will help you notice how chronic your complaint habit is. This tip can also serve as a reminder not to fight the complaint, but just to accept and observe them. What More? Shift Cast #34, Reinterpret your Past | Rick and I do a "personal life catch up" so if you like those...your in luck! :D I was inspired by Josh Kaufman's Personal MBA book the idea of using mental simulation to re-interpret your past experience. Josh uses the example of having a job in the corporate world. After a few years, he decided to quit because he was not happy in that corporate environment. He initially interpreted this job experience as a failure. Later, he choose to use mental simulation to recall the situation and this time add in new value judgement such as this was a valuable learning experience, and the job was uncomfortable enough to inspire him to quit and start his own business which would not have happened if he would have kept the job....so his re-interpretation was had a positive emotional context and cognitive value judgement. Take home bullets: - When the brains stores memories, they include emotionally context, and cognitive value judgement. - The brain fills in details that may or may not be true. - Memories are piable and can be changed when we recall them and add new value judgements, and emotional context. - You can use mental simulation to recall your past and reinperet the emotional context and value judgements to help be more sucessful today. Shift Cast #33, Interview with Bron Johnson | Bron Johnson is a friend who I met during one of Steve Pavlina's Conscious Growth Workshops. Bron is a personal adviser, a spiritual teacher and an intuitive coach. He helps his clients understand and work with the Law of Attraction to connect to their dreams and live more successful, and joyful lives. Rick asked Bron what do he means by intuition? Bron responded that he thinks of intuition as raising his personal vibration to connect with information outside of himself. He feels that psychic and intuitive mean pretty much the same thing to him. He really doesn't like the word psychic...mostly because he doesn't think people know what the word means. Rick's definition is a bit more clear. He feels that intuitive information comes from his own internal subconscious, and that psychic means obtaining information from an external source. This leads to a discussion of the difference between logic and intuition and where information comes from. We also talked about the law of attraction and Bron's take on it. To Bron, all of our thoughts our bodies carry a vibration. Our thoughts, according to the law of attraction, affect our vibration and the vibration of our life situation. We can use our thoughts to change our vibration with gratitude and thinking about our positive intentions to help us to co-create our life situation. When we focus on thoughts and circumstances that feel good and things that we want, our vibration will change and the law of attraction will connect us to opportunities to co-create situations with the universe through inspired action. Bron also brings up subjective reality and Rick calls it Gobbledygook! If you want to read more about subjective reality check this out: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2007/09/subjective-reality-simplified/ Finally, we talk about the difference between using the law of attraction and wishful thinking. Bron says using the law of attraction more like practicing shooting baskets in basketball. Using the law of attraction is a practice that helps you co-create your life situation and connect to your true quantum self. Your emotions give you clues as to how well you are doing in your practice. When you feel good emotions, you are going the in the right direction. When you feel negative emotion, that is a clue to remind you that you are currently not creating what you want. Shift Cast #32, Working on the Inner Game | In this show, Rick and I discuss our take on using visualizations and positive intentions to achieve success at whatever you want to accomplish in life. Working on the inner game refers to the idea that you really can only control your thoughts, words, and actions...Things external...what other people do, think and say are within your influence, but they are not under your direct control. Figure out and get clear about what you want The first step is to get clear about what it is that you want or what you want to create or accomplish. Rick mentions that for him, this is a problem because he often gets stuck and does't know what he really wants to do. Steve Pavlina and I agree on this...when in doubt...ACT. The universe favors action. Even if you take the wrong action, at least you will know that you don't want that! Set positive intentions When you set intentions and create visualizations of your intentions, it is important to frame them is positive language. The example I gave Rick was from Mother Teresa. When asked if she would like to march in a anti-war rally, she flatly refused. However, she also said, that if they were to hold a "pro-peace" rally, she would led that march. She knew the importance of creating intentions in positive terms. Take small action steps (do something!) every day toward what you want Break down the actions that you need to do to accomplish your goal, make them positive and small. These can be steps in order, or just a list of what you know for sure need to happen before you can call yourself done. Get some social support Blog about your goals; tweet about them...engage your family and friends and social networking contacts. Maybe someone in your circle will connect you with a resource that you were never aware of. Your social circle can also help you with accountability, but don't let too much nagging and guilt trips get in your way...ask your support system to stay positive without sinking you into self-sabotage. Shift Cast #31: Ego, Fear, and Quantum Consciousness | Due to an ongoing home improvement project, Rick and I took last week off...but now we're back! :D In the first segment Rick and I just catch up with the last couple of weeks...Rick with Irene and losing power for about 8 hours but otherwise unscathed...and me with my tales of home improvement... Then we move on to the discussion of the relationship between the ego and fear and how that relates to our ongoing discussion of the concepts from the movie "Quantum Activist" So Rick and both agreed that humans are born basically without an ego. Then, over time through observation, learning...the ego slowly develops. The baby will experience periods of comfort and discomfort or pain, and with then develop fears based on those painful or uncomfortable experiences. Rick pointed out quiet nicely, that fear is a significant and dominate motivator for all manner of human behavior, and those fears are rooted in the construct of the ego. Also, because this world we live in is a world of opposites, in order to know what fear is, we also need to have a concept of "the absence" of fear....just so we can understand what fear is. Fear takes on countless names, such as pain, shame, blame, discomfort...they are all different names for a sense of disempowerment or a sense of vulnerability. Fear's opposite is generally referred to with countless names as well...such as safety, security, prosperity, happiness, and other such terms with positive connotations. To link the discussion back to the Quantum Activist, wherein Amit Goswami discuss the two modes of operation: 1. Do - this is when you are in "ego mode", but you can learn to use the "Consciousness is all, and therefore invulnerable at some level" to help you curb the effects of dualism and fear. 2. Be - These are resting, meditating, sleeping, and spending time in nature just being, while using the background presence of your ego to keep your grounded in this world. In the Quantum Activist world view, fear is created by the illusion of separation and dualism in all forms, and the truth is that there is no separation, all is literary ONE. Shift Cast #30: Interview with Jack Bennett | I met Jack during one of Steve Pavlina's Conscious Growth Workshops about two years ago. Also, we decided to include Rick in the interview this time, and that worked out great! The three principles are: 1. Divine Thoughts - The river of thoughts, sensual inputs, both conscious and unconscious. 2. Divine Mind - The space where thougths happen. 3. Divine Consciouness - The process that lets us be aware of thoughts. We mostly talked about the implications of the three principles and how problems are not "really" real, that they are really only thoughts. Jack describes a how Sydney Banks discovered the three principles at the age of 42 while s attending a relationship workshop, trying to save his marriage. Syd felt intimitated by all the educated professionals at the workshop. When Syd expressed that he felt intimtated, one of the educated professions told him..."It's ok Syd, those are just thoughts". At that point, Syd experienced a sort of instant awakening that eventually led him to discover and develop the three principles. Shift Cast #29, Implications of the Materialist View | Rick and I discuss a few of the many implications of the "materialist" worldview, which is the dominate worldview held in the industrial world. One of the most important implication of holding the material worldview is that one feels they are separate from the universe, other people and the environment. In native american culture, humans view themselves as a part of nature...one with the mountains, and rivers. Deer and Buffalo and other game animals are viewed as brothers offering their bodies to the tribe as a gift. In the materialist world view, mountains and rivers are viewed as resources to be used...animals are viewed as commodities as well. When the materialist worldview took hold, the deer being hunted went from being viewed as "thou" or a brother to an "it". Many of these beliefs express themselves below the level of conscious thought...so most people won't really recognize they hold these views without thought and reflection. Death in the materialist worldview takes many forms, but even if one holds a belief that there is an afterlife, salvation is generally viewed as behavior based. If you are a "good" person your afterlife experience will be some form of heaven...whereas if you are a "bad" person, your afterlife experience will be some sort of hell. On the other hand, in the "consciousness" worldview the afterlife may entail some sort of paying of karmic debt, in the end, every soul winds up in some sort of heaven or may even choose to reincarnate. There are many more implications of the materialist worldview, these are the few that we have touched on so far... Quantum Activist Workbook Quantum Activist on Netflix Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #28, The Identity Question | In this show, Rick and I discuss the personal implications of our recent discussions concerning the "ground of all being". I asked Rick "What are you?" tune in to hear his (sorta long) answer, but includes being a "person" in a body who also HAS consciousness and a soul which is somehow separate for god and the rest of the universe. Rick's answer to this fundamental question represents the belief held by most people in the industrial world...his answer reflects the belief that matter is the ground of all being and separation is real...and of course...coffee cups can't possible be conscious or be made of consciousness... I believe I am consciousness...I agree with Dr. Goswami. I have a body, and I have thoughts and a mortgage...those are things that I have, but they are NOT really me... I think I am really consciousness...having a human experience. We also discuss the ego, the soul and god...as 3 levels of identity...we could probably discuss infinite levels of consciousness...but that would get tedious. Enjoy... What are you? Shift Cast #27, Quantum Activist Part 2 | This week Rick and I discuss the results of our remote viewing experiment. Rick was surprised when we both had some "positive hits". Rick mailed Jeff a Jeff Gordon Pez dispenser, and he saw images of a shaft with a ball on top, something like a lolly pop, and a table leg. Jeff mailed Rick his dogtags from the military...and Rick recieved the shape of a dogtag that show up in his images, as well as seeing the image of a coin. We both learned that our egos do automatic interpretations of images, the images are there...the interpretations muddy the reception. There are more exercises that involve different forms of meditation and sharing our results. Rick admitted that he is more motivated to meditate with a purpose, such as an experiment that can show results and to have someone to share in the experience. Shift Cast #26, Quantum Activist, Part 1 | Shift Cast #26, Quantum Activist Part 1 As promised last week Rick and I discuss the movie "Quantum Activist" by Amit Goswami, Ph.D. This material might hurt your brain a little bit...it is heady and involves MATH! I'm not a big fan of math... We discussed the topics below: "1. Consciousness is the ground of all being; matter consists of possibilities of consciousness itself. Since consciousness is choosing from itself, this assertion avoids the paradox of dualism—how does consciousness interact with matter without a signal? Quantum physics gives the radical answer: there is no signal. This signalless communication is called quantum nonlocality. 2. Another tendency is to think that we choose with our individual consciousness. This also gives a paradox: who gets to choose in the case of a dichotomous traffic light discussed in the movie. The solution leads to the same idea as above: original consciousness, the source of our downward causation, is nonlocal. This source we may call God, following older traditions; but it is objective and we can equally call it quantum consciousness. 3. There is no mathematics for collapse; no continuous algorithm can be given for it. Collapse is discontinuous. What is discontinuity? When an electron jumps from one atomic orbit to another, it does so without going through the intermediate space. The electron’s quantum leap is an example of discontinuity. 4. Quantum measurement in the brain is tangled hierarchical, meaning that there is a circular relationship among the brain’s components. This gives us self-reference. In the process of quantum measurement involving the tangled hierarchical brain, consciousness splits itself into a subject (that experiences) and an object (that is experienced). In the process, consciousness identifies with the brain." Both Rick and I struggle with understanding these concepts, and we both know that I agree with Dr. Goswami's conclusions... Rick remains unconvinced on point #1 above, but remains open to experiments...and still wants to agree. Quantum Activist Workbook Quantum Activist on Netflix Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #25, Quantum Updates and Integral Consciousness | Rick discusses some of his experiences in noticing "the gap" since buying his car. Little things like being able to use the drive through and his ability to buy milk now that he has a car. We also discuss one of Rick's questions concerning the interview with Mike Schumacher about integral consciousness. Rick wonder's how integral consciousness can be "integral" when it attempts to extract the only the "good" parts of certain worldviews. Finally, we preview our upcoming discussion of the movie "Quantum Activist" which suggests that consciousness is primary in the universe instead of matter. This movie suggests that paranormal phenomena may have an objective explanation. Quantum Activist Workbook Quantum Activist on Netflix Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #24, Interview with Mike Schumacher | Our guest this week is Mike Schumacher a friend of mine from yet another one of Steve Pavlina's Conscious Growth workshops. Mike and I talk about integral theory and it's view on major levels of consciousness that have occurred throughout human history. We talk about the different levels and how each level of consciousness affected human behavior and how today we still have several different levels co-existing on the planet. Integral theory seeks to find the positive aspects of all levels while accepting all levels. It also seeks to build structures that will allow us to peacefully interact with people who hold to different levels of consciousness. These structures also seek to facilitate forward progress through the levels within an individual's lifetime. We also briefly discuss one of the expressions of post-modern consciousness, that of minimalism. Minimalism is the idea of reducing one's physical holdings to a more sustainable level versus the modern idea of massive acquistion of psyhical possessions. Shift Cast #23, Conversation with Crystal Silver | Crystal Silver is a friend that I met about two year's ago during Steve Pavlina's first Conscious Growth Workshop. She is a ball of energy and loads of fun to hang out with. This conversation begins with minimalism and we discuss both our journeys through the ideas this movement brings about. Crystal came at this from the point of purging excess objects from her life in order to leave a smaller footprint and to fit in with her travel heavy life style. I approached minimalism from the spiritual angle, which doesn't require to physically clean out my closets, but to spiritually detach from my need of all things external (roles, my story, and physical things). This led to a discussion of identity and learning to identify with permanent things (such as consciousness, spirit, or maybe energy) instead of identification with ideas that are temporary (your body, you job, you car...et al.) We ended with talking about non-conformity and how Crystal spent all of her life on the left-handed path of the non-conformist and I spent the first 40 years of my life on the right-handed path of conformity. Super huge-normus THANK YOU to Davidji for providing the awesome bumper!!! Crystal mentioned her friend Scott Brandon Hoffman aka The Entertainer, so here's his shout out! Shift Cast #22, Habit Creation and Being Less Judgemental | Rick and I discuss the Habit Course that I particpated in over the last month. The course was offered by Leo Babauta of Zen Habits. I learned how habits are formed and how to use Leo's "Simple Method" to slowly learn the skill of habit creation. Once you master creating a habit, you can use this skill to replace your unhealthy habits with new healthy alternative habits. One of my favorite interviews during the course was with Brené Brown Ph.D., LMSW, University of Houston, on Embracing Your Imperfections & Your Worthiness. My take away here is that all forms of change are hard, and we can embrace and learn to accept ourselves "warts and all" and know that win, lose or draw during our personal change journey, our worthiness is never in question...we are always worthy regardless of the results of our efforts to change. You can check out Brené's blog and learn more about here amazing work. We also discussed a very cool podcast by Stever Robbins the Get it Done Guy about how to be less judgemental. This is a very practical method using a mental movie about the response you want to create in the future instead of being judgemental. Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #21, Post-fun Recharge | Rick and I catch up after a busy two weeks since Memorial day weekend. Rick talks about what was happening with him and some issues with his Tivo and his car...there is a fun story about his getting the car inspected and registered and a little adventure that went with that. I talk about my trip to Tuscan, AZ to visit some old Air Force friends and then with only two days to rest...taking a trip to Portland, OR to visit some more friends from Steve Pavlina's Conscious Growth Workshop. Then, as I was flying home from Portland on Tuesday last week...my friend KB asked me to spend the day with her and eat lunch with Davidji of the Chopra Center... That sounded too cool to pass up (and it was!)...KB recorded a video with Davidji...I'm the camera man :D KB and I also visited the Agape International Spiritual Center with Michael Bernard Beckwith...and had a blast with that... So, after all that fun...I was really exhausted...so I spent this week resting and recharging my batteries... This adventure reminded me of a blog post by Pam Slim about learning the difference between a crack pipe and a shot of wheat grass... I still need some persepctive on this adventure and the long term affects before I will decide how to characterize this adventure...but it did really make me think about overloading myself...even when it's "FUN!" :D Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #20, Interview with Erica Douglass | Erica Douglass is an amazing women that I met during a workshop in 2009 (like all my podcast guests!). She created a Web Hosting Company and eventually sold it for 1.1 Million Dollars!!! (WOW!). Then Erica focused on creating a successful blog where she helps people grow their businesses. More recently, Erica started a new business call Whoosh Traffic that helps your business get more leads and convert those leads into customers. Erica tells us the story of how she created the business as a way to make some passive income while working on consulting, and the realized that the web hosting was making 80% of her income and her consulting was making 20%...and she was spending 80% of her time...on consulting!! Time to make a Shift... She really learned how to run a business by doing it which I found really fascinating... After building up her customer base, she found her business deep in debt, and worked her way up to a path to profitability...when she received an offer to sell the business... initially she said no to the offer, but after about a month, she decided it to sell the company... The decision to sell the business was difficult, of course. Erica was exhausted at the time and doctors told her she was working to much...It turned out that she has Celiac Disease...which means she can't eat gluten without becoming extremely ill. | 6/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Shift Cast #19, Trains, Planes, and a Toyota Yaris | This is the story of Rick's adventure to pick up his car...Here are the highlights... ...The night before the trip from Maine to New York...he is a a bundle of nerves and can't sleep...then he's 5 minutes late to meet the taxi, which came and left already!!! Oppps!!! No problem...the taxi comes back and Rick and the driver grumble at each other...tee hee...:D He's off to the airport!!! Ok...at the airport and...oh no...the flight is fogged in!!! After waiting for a while for the fog to lift, the flight is cancelled...but Rick doens't quit...no...he keeps looking for ways to keep moving forward!!! There is another passenger who volunteered to drive some other passengers to another airport about 100 miles away!!! This works out great...Rick is now able to fly directly to New York's JFK airport from Portland...the orignal plan included a flight to Boston, then another flight to Newark...so the fog turns out to be a good thing!!! So he make it's to JFK...and it turns out that the train connections are a little bit easier from JFK...a little cheaper and a little closer to the car!!! Another boon!! At some point, he realizes that he has caught up to his scheduled time table... He picks up the car, and make's his way home... Loads of lessons here: stay positive, detachment from how things should work out...keep moving forward, being open to new options that were not orignially apparent... Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #18, Rick buys a car! | We have been talking about this for a while, Rick needed a car and last week we worked together to buy him one. I (yooper) was in LA, Rick was in Maine, the car we both fell in love with was in...New York!!! We were on Skype most of the day, both of us on the phone with various credit unions, banks, the dealer, travel agents of all sorts... By the end of the day, the loan was funded and the car was his...whew!!! The lessons here are many, but generally, the universe favors action vs. inaction...so when stuck...just move...do something small, and lean into to what you want. Have questions or Comments? Shift Cast #7, Inducing Consciousness – Accepting | In this show, Rick and I discuss the stages of acceptance that Phil in the movie Ground Hog Day goes through and how they relate to the stages of grief. I've noticed that as I go through life...in each new phase I experience these stages of "acceptance". When I start a new level, I am dealing with a new set of stressful situations, it is real easy to fall back into old habits in order to cope. Utimately I want to find "consciousness", "awareness", "god", or "truth" to fill the gap and help me feel good, instead of denying the emotions and numbing myself with TV, beer, games, computers...insert your addiction here... Maybe there is a spiritual "something" that is always better than anything the world can offer, and doesn't include excess calories. Shift Cast #6, Inducing Consciousness – New Patterns | Shift Cast #6, Inducing Consciousness - New Patterns In show #6, Rick and I discuss how new patterns in life will require a period of re-calibration in order to notice the gap and respond creatively to stimuli. For example, I recently quit my job, stopped drinkly beer, using tabacco and cut down on watching tv... ...this new pattern increased the "volume", so to speak, on my emotions and as a result I have more difficulty responding creatively and find myself regretting my "reactive" responses. ...some ideas to help calibrate to this new pattern are more exercise to burn off excess energy stored in my body... ...and more regular mediation practice. Shift Cast #5, Inducing Consciousness, More Meditation | In Episode #5, Rick shares his experiences with meditation...What worked, what didn't work, and what he learned while trying the meditation challenge from Deepak Chopra. Rick found that he was better able to just listen to the audio files on his Ipod while walking to start the challenge...that's excellenct. My favorite approach to trying meditation is "whatever works". Spending time in nature is also a benefical practice that works well along with mediation, in helping you experience the present moment and expand the spaces between your thoughts. Shift Cast #2: Inducing Consciousness, Part 1 | In this episode, my friend Rick joins me to discuss the idea behind my web page "inducing consciousness". The first step is to notice that there is a "gap" of time between a stimulus in the environment and your response to that stimulus. When we notice that there is a gap, and we stop...then...feel what we are feeling in our bodies, and then do nothing...it opens the door to more creative choices. The point is to expand from one choice, or your conditioned response to several creative choices... Yes, if you feel that your conditioned response is the most appropriate for the situation, that's okay of course...the point is to notice that you are making a choice.
