CleanSIVAD Health Care Roundtable, Episode 3: The Provider’s Point Of View | A pleasure to welcome Dr. Heather Downs to today's roundtable. Dr. Downs is Board Certified in Family Medicine, and is a physician and hospitalist. Today's panel also includes regular contributors John May of TrustnetMD and Marshall Maglothlin of Blue Oak Consulting. Some initial thoughts from panelist John May: "I see a lot of capital being spent on healthcare IT without a commensurate improvement in health. Between vendors who control feature sets resulting the net decrease in physician productivity and distorted reimbursement policies that base care on number of tests rather than better outcomes, the results are predictable. We could do so much better. In any business environment, productivity improvements rely on front line users (the knowledge workers) being the final arbiter on how technology should be applied to improve operations and capacity of our system of care. But in healthcare, physicians like Dr. Downs do not have a seat at the table when it comes to dictating how we should move forward in a way that gets us prepared for the incredible increase in need for her services just around the corner." Now, today's show notes: 1. A main goal for today's show is to get the point-of-view of technology and health care from the provider's angle, from their point-of-view. To date, on this show, we've discussed health care technology from the tech, the business side, and the entrepreneurial side. But never from the provider's point-of view. 2. Has the integration of EMR (electronic medical records) helped - or hurt - in the implementation of medical practices? And does it help provide better patient care? Is there enough training to get all providers fully utilizing the service to their maximum benefit? And do rural practitioners, in terms of resources, have a higher hill to climb in terms of keeping up with technological advancements such as EMR? 3. What needs, from the provider's point-of-view, are not being met by technology? One question is, were physicians actually consulted during the design of tools like EMR? What kinds of back studies have been done to determine the ROI of this technology? And are early adopters sharing lessons learned and best practices with newer users? 4. A discussion about reimbursement issues, and how those are being impacted by technology. And does technology make reimbursements more precise and accurate? 5. Is preventative care moving forward with the implementation of new IT initiatives? What role can technology and social networks play in assisting patients with monitoring their own preventative care? And how can we incent patients to do the preventative care they are being asked to do? 6. Finally, a brief discussion on how to increase revenues and profitability, and the role technology can play in that, and the entrepreneurial opportunity to provide more business support to physicians. CleanSIVAD Healthcare Roundtable, Episode Two | Joined by the CEO of TrustNetMD, John May, and Marshall Maglothin, who consults out of Blue Oak Consulting. Today's subject for our Healthcare Roundtable was social networks in health care, how we engage with patients, and the entrepreneurial opportunities that come with that: [Producer's note: Skype didn't cooperate too well today, so the broadcast is a bit choppy. Our apologies...] 1. Starting off, to set the table for the conversation, we discuss the general practice of how the general public searches for information about their health and illnesses on the web, and the impact on patient care. But are there benefits to people being informed? 2. Social networks can be great information resources for BOTH patients and physicians. Patients are yearning for more specific information about their personal health care. 3. We discuss both the strengths and challenges of social networks in health care. 4. An agreement that social networks catering to a niche health care topic is a prime opportunity for entrepreneurs to come in and provide a meaningful solution, and business opportunity. 5. The strength of social networking in healthcare is not about the individual, but about teams, and making it easier for physicians to connect to discuss medical cases. This eliminates the needs to be together in a physical location, which is difficult. 6. Is there a future for membership and fee-based networking sites, perhaps organized around very specific niches? 7. How do you monetize social networks in health care? Or do you? 8. Discussion around some other wellness and patient projects that are currently under way, all examples of how technology and social interaction is changing the patient and physician experience. ### If you enjoyed this broadcast, please subscribe on iTunes here. CleanSIVAD Healthcare Roundtable, Episode 1 | Joined by the CEO of TrustNetMD, John May, and Marshall Maglothin, who consults out of Blue Oak Consulting. Today's subject for our Healthcare Roundtable was how social media and related technologies are applicable to the health care industry. We discussed the following topics: 1. Why technology, at least from a social media perspective, has not gotten a toe hold in the health care sector. True innovation verses simple speeding up the old school methods... 2. What can we do to help the physicians and clinicians better utilize and maximize social technology? 3. We need to set up an expectation, and create time in the day, to enable physicians to do more high-level consults via the social web... These are NOT social media apps... these are now clinical tools... 4. Is building a "Facebook" for doctors the right approach? 5. Is social for physicians all about collaboration? 6. Time savings is a critical element to bringing social into health care practice. 7. Will we crowdsource diagnoses? And solve problems without physicians having to physically meet face-to-face. 8. How to get more collaboration after the early adopters get the networks started. 9. The protocols for reviewing high resolution images such as CT scans and such, and how people across the country can review and make decisions on the transmission of those large files. 10. 90% of U.S. healthcare is coming online in the next five years. 11. The real impactful change we will see will come from an interactive collaboration from physicians and IT entrepreneurs. ### If you enjoyed this broadcast, please subscribe on iTunes here. CleanImproving Education For Special Needs Students – Part Two | Today's question: Response to intervention (RTI)... What is it? And how does it work? CleanRob Romero on SIVAD Radio! | A thrill to welcome Rob Romero to SIVAD Radio. You can find Rob online here. [From Rob:] "Early in my architectural career, I had the opportunity to work in a world-renowned architect's office, Antoine Predock, on a wide range of projects from very high end residences to massive conventions centers in Morocco to museums in California and Wyoming to the Disney Mediterranean Hotel in Orlando. Since then, I have worked for several other design-oriented architectural firms until stepping out on my own. In 2000, I started working for myself under the name Romero Architecture and now ROMERAMA which is a hybrid of my last name + the first letters of my interests - Architecture + Music + Art. I have pursued all scales of projects from retail/commercial to residential/renovation. From 2000 to 2009, I completed projects in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, North Carolina and West Virginia for total estimated construction costs of $7,580,000. As with each project, I always feel that site analysis is vital and I make an effort to experience each location as part of my duty as an architect and responsible designer in the world. One of the most rewarding aspects of designing a project is getting to know the clients and, in some cases, I have had the opportunity to create art that is specifically commissioned for their building. The combination of art and architecture has been part of my ethos from the beginning." On today's show, we discussed the following topics: 1. Rob's firm, Romero Design; and what inspired him to launch his own firm. 2. How he, and his industry, are making it through the economy; and some discussion of ways to survive and thrive... 3. CleanSIVAD’s Equity Raise Series – Investor Appetites? | Charles Davis, SIVAD's CFO and a partner in The Meadowmont Group, a private equity firm, continues a series of conversations around equity raises - what to do, how to prepare, how to recruit and how to communicate with potential investors. In this presentation, Charles sets the table about the large amounts of money being thrown at large deals such as Facebook, but also makes the point that investor appetites are growing for smaller private investments (500K and under). This type of investment is increasingly attractive when compared to other investments such as stocks and bonds. Many are reporting an explosion in entrepreneurship in the US, and investors are understanding this, and getting behind it. A lot of smart people are leaving corporate America and starting their own growth companies. And the trend is strongest towards health care and technology. Charles Davis is currently CFO for Sivad Business Solutions LLC, a regional document management and process automation company that specializes in the government, education, healthcare and small business sectors.
