Composer Jason Graves | Composer Jason Graves discusses his work on "Dead Space 2" and his approach to creating new sounds with the Skywalker Orchestra. Jason Graves is a British Academy Award-winning composer who has brought his passion for music to video game franchises such as DEAD SPACE (EA), STAR TREK (Bethesda), SILENT HUNTER (Ubisoft) and COMMAND AND CONQUER (EA). His music has become synonymous with unique, cinematic textures combined with modern aesthetics and he is renowned worldwide for his cinematic, immersive and award-winning music. Jason was solely responsible for creating an innovative, unique soundtrack for DEAD SPACE, which has become Electronic Arts' best-selling original title and called "the scariest game ever made." Jason's groundbreaking score has been hailed by critics as a "truly original soundtrack" and "the best score of the year." It was recognized with a myriad of worldwide nominations and won two BAFTA awards - one for Original Score and one for Use of Audio. For the latter, the Academy stated, "It's the music soundtrack that boasts horror and tension." Jason's diverse musical background as a classically-trained composer, jazz drummer, keyboardist, guitarist and world percussionist allow him to expertly compose in many different genres of music. As a result, his game credits alone include more than eighty titles, ranging from electronic and rock to full symphonic scores. He performs world percussion and guitar on many of his own tracks and has conducted and recorded his live orchestral scores at Air Studios London, Capitol Records, Paramount Pictures, Skywalker Sound, and with the Seattle and Salt Lake City Philharmonic orchestras. Jason also composes for film and television, including his recent score for the thriller FATAL FLAW. His music has been licensed for television shows such as AMERICAN IDOL and THE AMAZING RACE. Recent projects include two hybrid electronic/orchestral game scores - one for the popular CITY OF HEROES franchise, entitled GOING ROGUE (N.C. Soft) and a second for SECTION 8 (Southpeak Interactive), a first-person shooter set in the distant future. Jason also provided live orchestral scores for DEAD SPACE EXTRACTION, the Electronic Arts prequel to the popular and critically-acclaimed horror hit DEAD SPACE, and COMMAND AND CONQUER 4: TIBERIAN TWILIGHT (EA), which was performed by the London Philharmonia and recorded at the famous Air Studios. In addition to two BAFTA's, Jason's music has been honored with three Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Award (AIAS) nominations, winning "Outstanding Achievement in Audio" for DEAD SPACE. He has received seventeen G.A.N.G. nominations and four wins, including "Audio of the Year" for DEAD SPACE, "Best Original Theme" nominations for STAR TREK: LEGACY and BLAZING ANGELS 2 and "Music of the Year" nominations for DEAD SPACE and KING ARTHUR. Current projects include EA's highly anticipated Dead Space 2, plus three sequels for different unannounced flagship game franchises and the feature film thriller NEVERMORE. | 42 | VideoThe Sound of "Avatar" | The groundbreaking technical and directorial abilities of Director James Cameron can be experienced in his breathtaking visual world of Pandora in “Avatar”. This never before seen world is filled with landscapes, creatures, and civilizations that have also never been heard before by audiences. Bringing to life the sounds of Pandora include the talent of Skywalker Sound’s Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Re-recording Mixer, and Sound Designer Chris Boyes in this SoundWorks Collection sound for film exclusive profile. Movie Synopsis: AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a newcomer from Earth embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar®-winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived of the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story. We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where a corporate consortium is mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth’s energy crisis. Because Pandora’s atmosphere is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human “drivers” have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora… the Na’vi. Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na’vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na’vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake’s life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures. As Jake’s relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na’vi way and finally takes his place among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world. | 2/2/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Unfortunately, even as the Autobots try to make a new life among humans, they discover they may not be welcome. National Security Advisor Theodore Galloway (John Benjamin Hickey), driven to prove that all Transformers should be banished from earth, endeavors to terminate NEST, believing the Autobots’ very presence may endanger the human race. Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots, agrees to leave our planet if the governments of the world wish it… but he warns Galloway to consider what happens if the Autobots leave earth defenseless. Meanwhile at school, Sam adjusts to his pushy, legend-in-his-own mind roommate, Leo (Ramon Rodriguez), and an equally aggressive temptation in the form of a new co-ed, Alice (Isabel Lucas). Sam does his best to navigate college life, until suddenly he’s besieged by visions flashing across his brain like thunderbolts. The Decepticons soon learn what Sam doesn’t know; that he alone holds the key to the outcome of the struggle between evil and the ultimate power of good. A normal life will have to wait. With the help of the Autobots, the soldiers of NEST, and an old adversary-turned-ally (John Turturro, returning as former Sector 7 Agent Simmons), Sam and Mikaela must uncover the secret history of the Transformers presence on earth, and the sacrifices that have to be made to save it from an ancient threat sworn on returning here for revenge… an ancient Decepticon named THE FALLEN. | 12/30/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
