OK but others out there are better
I started listening to Finally Learn Spanish last summer, and was intrigued. It was a great way for me to brush up on some very rusty Spanish and although I had made it to intermediate-advanced levels, I had lost so much. This is primarily for late beginners to early intermediate Spanish speakers. I like the topics that are chosen, some are interesting and useful. But a few issues I have that have made me move this to the back burner of my Spanish language podcasts: First, so much time is spent on introductory of the issue, promotion of the podcast premium edition that it often takes up a substantial portion of the podcast. They are so repetitive I end up skipping five minutes into it to get past the same stuff. Secondly, the Spanish speakers are very different. This to me is a good thing as it prepares listeners for different regional speaking styles. Alma is by far the very best and clearest native speaker, however she does not appear enough. Carla is good as well. The most needed improvement is Enrique. Enrique speaks in such a slow rate that it is nearly impossible to get a feel for native speaking. Enrique belongs in a very early beginning speaking podcast, not here. Another issue is consistency: One podcast will have the native speaker speak first, then the translation. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but it's hard to get used to. I personally don't think the speak-translate format is great, but it's a nice supplement to other podcasts that are conversational. My biggest issue, though, is the premium podcasts. You cannot 'subscribe' to them here, you have to pay via an awfully difficult to use website that is in need of a huge redesign, and you have to go here and DOWNLOAD the podcasts them IMPORT THEM into iTunes! Awful. The categorization/labeling of the podcasts make no sense (B23, etc etc) and are not explained. I joined the premium membership for three months and after one time of downloading the podcasts, I never returned. It was too hard to find things, to organize them with the regular podcasts, especially when iTunes allows me to just use other podcasts and update them as needed seamlessly. No fuss, no muss. I don't think having a combination of ESL and Spanish in one podcast makes sense. This creates forced questions from the moderator asking silly questions about the English language. I seriously doubt a native speaker likes to hear this in his/her language. I certainly don't find it useful and it takes up time to spell out stuff like "oh, Carla, did you know that we don't use this term in English?" I have made several suggestions on the site's forums and waited to see any of them tried out. Since nothing happened, it is likely they find they like the way it is. Which is of course their right. I choose not to join again and would recommend people find other podcasts to supplement these as there are much more useful ones out there.
Muy Bueno
My spanish is still atrocious-but repetition is the key-I'm getting better. This is a great podcast because Carla is a native speaker, and she speaks very clearly and slowly enough. This is much better then the most popular spanish podcast-coffee break spanish. The creators of coffee break spanish are not native speakers, so it's like learning spanish with a scottish accent, making it very difficult and confusing, unless you are a scottish.
Muy Bueno Podcast!!
I enjoy the podcasts on a regular basis. I listen to it whenever I can. I have taken three spanish classes in high school and I desperately wanted practice. This podcasts gives me that and helps me to brush up on my vocabulario. I am also glad that it there are two proffesionals with experience teaching through this podcast. Muchas Gracias a "Finally Learn Spanish". Keep up the good worK!
