Mr. Baseball John Gielow (001) June 29 2011 | 004 Sports and Entertainment News | Top News: The L.A. Dodgers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court Monday, with the Dodgers owing almost 40 million in payroll by June 30. Most of the debt is do to the McCourt’s personal use of team money. Last week Bud Selig (Commissioner of MLB) rejected a deal between FOX sports and the L.A. Dodgers that would have given Frank McCourt enough money to keep the Dodgers afloat for the rest of the season, citing that the money that would have been given was not appropriately being used and was not good for the team. On Tuesday a judge approved a hedge fund loan so the Dodgers can make payroll for the month of June and for the rest of the season. A hearing is scheduled for July 20th to determine if MLB’S loan is a better option for the Dodgers. Rejected FOX Sports deal breakdown: 385 Million Payment to McCourt’s from FOX Sports 173.5 Million; McCourt’s and their attorney’s 23.5 Million; Repaying a loan from FOX to help make the Dodgers payroll for May 10 Million; Legal fee 10 Million; The McCourt’s 50 Million; payment toward a possible 100 million dollar payment to Jamie McCourt if the club was ruled Frank McCourt’s property through the divorce proceedings. Frank McCourt blames Bud Selig for his inability to make the June payroll and keep the Dodgers afloat, but he really has nobody to blame but himself. It is unfortunate that a historic franchise like the Dodgers has to drag through the mud. Monday the Washington Nationals hired Davey Johnson to take over the skipper job. It has been 10 plus years since Johnson last managed a MLB team. Although Johnson is new as a manager he is not new to the National’s, he has been with the National’s since 2009 in a Senior Advisor role. All-Star Game 2011; Phoenix, AZ is hosting the all-star game this year and what a year to be hosting the event, there is a lot parity this season with big names on the DL, and even more surprises in the divisional races.
