Piano Intro | Just a simple humble ditty, one of a handful I've been playing on the piano lately. I haven't been in the mood to do much recording in the last months — or more specifically, haven't been in the mood to flesh out and arrange tunes. So this is proof to myself that I can still hit the record button. Apologies that the pedal is so squeaky :) | 5/30/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

after the quake | View the footage with music at youtube After watching the video of the tsunami devastating the shores of Japan, I couldn't work anymore. So instead I sat down to dedicate a few hours of my effort and energy to those who are affected. Best listened to on headphones. It's a mood/texture piece. Named after a book by my favorite author, Haruki Murakami | 3/11/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Letterpress | This is a piece written for 37signals, made to accompany a fun video they did on Letterpress printing The track is best listened to in context of the video, since it's scored directly to it. But here is some background: The song is rooted in the acoustic guitar. It's a piece that I've been sitting on for more than a year, but never really sat down and did anything with. The lead instrument is mandolin. During the soft fluttery parts where we see humans preparing things the mandolin is backed by an ebow played on an acoustic guitar, which provides that sound which is both flute-like and metallic. When the machines come in, the mandolin gets snappy. The melody is doubled and strengthened by another acoustic. It's all about steel and metal. The guitar and banjo kicks into rhythmic gear. At the end they are supported by an array of instruments being slapped and shaken, somewhat loosely. This is not a tight digital affair. Banjo parts and playing courtesy of Andy Hentz. | 3/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Let's go home | A typical folk song. For us. Written and recorded in about an hour for the 24 hour album (attempted on March 13th). Excuse roughness and vocal glitches, it was 2am and this was my first full take. Thanks to montgomeru for his chord suggestions. In case you weren't aware, he's the king of folk, modern and postmodern. And away we went Off on our own Oh so confident That we'd be coming back home Time went by As it always does And before we realized it We'd forgotten our trust [chorus] Lets go home I'm tired of wandering around Let's go home right now Years have gone passed Just like they are days I didn't know I could last so long so far away I'm tired of all of this Scenery It's beautiful here, sure But it's just not me This is our chance To make love out of life I know you want it now, need it now I can see it in your eyes So lets move forward One last time Let's stop thinking (always thinking) If it's wrong or right [chorus] Let's just go home No more wandering around Let's just go home right now. | 3/14/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

lifeline acoustic (live-ish) | Rough and Slow acoustic version of the more poppy lifeline glu and sudara collaboration. If you like 4 minutes of the same 3 chords, you'll LOVE this song. Now that I have two microphones, I'm working on playing/signing at the same time while recording. I'd like to get to the point where I can feel comfy with the quality of single takes (no editing) in this setup, which is what prompted me to upload this guy. Never mind me almost choking to death on the last lines, that's just the new black. | 1/29/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Sudara's 24 | 24 hours of music making for 2008. Yup. This is a "Gaiman variation" which means that I stopped at 24 hours and this is what I've got. Not 24 min, but it is a "Noble Failure" You can see my 2007 album here | 12/14/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

morning coffee | I do three things after waking up these days: I shower. I make coffee. I play this song and drink my coffee. Nothing complicated. Nothing fancy. Just some basic fingerpicking to test my motor skills and bring some aural sunshine into my day. | 12/11/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jezebel - Iron and Wine Cover | This is the first cover song I've ever really recorded in my 15 years of playing and recording. The guitar and voice are each full continuous takes, I didn't want to do comping (copy and pasting), though the vocal harmony parts were done in sections because they were impossible as all hell. I have an incredible amount of respect for Sam Beam after attempting to record this tune. He is an absolutely gifted and amazing singer. Going back and listening to the original was overwhelmingly humbling to me. | 9/15/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

back to the cold (warm mix) | After an adventure in re-recording the entire song down a third, we came back to the original, tightened and tuned. Always the self flagellating perfectionist, it still needs a bit more love. Always the pragmatist, it is probably done for now. | 5/27/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Capitol Records Remix | Every single sound source on this tune comes from a cheesy 70's Capitol Records promotional record. A great record, mind you, complete with faked dialogues between engineer and producer. At times, it's messy, so hold onto your faders. | 4/25/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Out The Window 2 (First Part of the Programme) | Plucking of the "wrong side of the strings" on my jazz guitar. Rhythm made with an espresso machine. I tried to do 2 main things here: 1) Create harmony with spoken voice, via pitch shifting (Did the first part of the program disturb you?) 2) Create rhythm and with luck a bit of melody with automating bandpass and lo/hi filters with white noise being the source material. The tune finishes with this battery powered monkey. I once brought this particular monkey to an improv session in Santa Fe called "The Hat Series." One would show up with an instrument, write your name on a piece of paper and place in a hat. The moderator would then call names (2-5 at a time) and those people would have to get up and play a piece of music. Other non-musical folks were allowed to participate too, so sometimes you'd have a dancer or a visual artist accompany the improv. It was a bunch of fun (and often very funny) to watch people have to create music on stage without ever meeting each other, speaking about ideas before, etc. Once, I decided to be a smart ass and show up to this 'hat series' with this monkey that clapped it's hands (with cymbals), squealed like a good monkey should and of course had a bit of circus music playing out of some 75 cent speaker. My name got called with only 1 other person (which was unfortunate, I was hoping to be a smart ass and just punctuate a piece of music with clapping and squeals). However, not only was 1 other person involved, but the person I got called with happened to be....a dancer. Yeah. So it was just me and him on stage in front of about 30 people, improvising a piece - me "on monkey," desperately trying to make as many noises as possible and give the dancer something to work with. | 3/6/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Out The Window 3 (Poor Souls) | This piece is a typical example of my love for spoken voice. I used to go thrift store hopping and try and collect all tapes and records I could get my hands on that had spoken voice. I used to drive around listening to these, and to christian talk radio. I was fascinated especially with the most aggressive talkers, the ones who would produce sound bites that were just so GREAT as far as fitting into musical material ("Everything is your fault") Also includes my favorite scene from Citizen Kane and features this crazy water boiler we had in Santa Fe. Attempt at a 'beat' is made completely from various sampled sounds from my kitchen . | 3/6/08 | Free | View In iTunes |
