Podcast Description
Swoop’s World Radio is a Southern California Internet radio show that is equal parts arts, culture and party. Each week Swoop, Peter and the crew tap into the So Cal lifestyle with interviews of the unique personalities making news. Guests have included politicians and community activists, independent filmmakers and Academy-award winning actress Yancy Butler, rock and roll icon Grace Slick and emerging indie musicians, authors, artists, Olympic athletes and more. The topics are as varied as the guest list, but the goal is always the same — to keep the conversation entertaining and the debates insightful. After the interview, stick around for the ever-popular Brewskis! Swoop and Peter are joined by CLiv and TBone for a weekly on-air beer-tasting where the guys tell you what they really think about some of America's great (and not-so-great) craft beers. Peter lends his culinary acumen with a list of food paring ideas for each beer. The party continues with TBone on Sports and Weird News of the Day. With "primetime" officially over, the guys get rough and rowdy. The comedic discussions go on late into the night or until the beer runs out.

Kim Cameron on Late Night | On Wednesday February 8, 2012, 8pm-11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night our guest is Kim Cameron of the band Side FX. Kim will be calling in during our first hour and filling us in on all the happenings with Side FX including their concert coming to Long Beach this week. After Kim we’ll be taking on all topics, as well as any interesting news of the day. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Side FX Side FX and lead singer Kim Cameron is a five piece band well known for exploring new sounds and combining rhythms and beats that together, offer the unexpected, continue to break traditional boundaries within the music industry. Pop's Fresh Edge is the best way to describe this eclectic mix of genres, and showcases Kim's diversity as a songwriter. Listen to the show The band has toured across the US, hitting over 20 states, performing at some of the Nation's most famous venues and festivals including the Birchmere, Blues Alley, Genghis Cohen, Key Club, the Bitter End, Sullivan Hall, National Cherry Blossom Festival, and Tobacco Road to name a few. National press & music placements have included CBS' Morning Show, CBS' Talk Philly, Redskins Nation, Poolside Palisades Pool Party Web series, Alli Sports, Fox Sports, Eos music, DMX, MooMoo Music, Pure Play, More Magazine, WSJ's Smart Money, Music Connection, Joey Reynolds' show, and Jim Bohannon's show. Kim Cameron Lead singer and songwriter for Side FX My passion is telling stories through music. I grew up a few miles from the white sandy beaches of southern California, so in-between boogie board surfing, I marched in a band with my clarinet, starred in school musicals, sang in the choir, and performed in a cover band. Unfortunately, when it came time to pay back those college loans, and deliver a rent check, I found myself leaving the true love of my life: music, to pursuing a career in the corporate world. After years of long hours (and I mean long), weekends, holidays, late nights; I found few rewards, and a lot of glass ceilings. After watching a family member battle cancer and frustrated with what I had compromised, I turned back to my true passion and took a deep look at what drives me, what fulfills my soul. I took a leap of faith, and bet on myself. Scary? For sure! But, today, I have written 3 albums, (Contradictions, Turning Point, The Blond Side), completed a 19 State tour, found an outstanding band, created a publishing company, and am the only indie artist who has charted 5 songs on a single album! I began this adventure to create music that will make you cry, smile, dance in the kitchen and think about life a little differently. For me, my music is an image of me and those who have touched me; musical stories that others can find themselves in. There are so many great stories left to write, left to be told. After our interview with Kim Cameron, we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, sports talk, rants and more. This week on “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits, we’ll taste Casco Bay Riptide Red Ale From Casco Bay Brewery, located in Portland, Maine. Marc & The Plattitudes on Late Night | On Wednesday February 1, 2012, 8pm-11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night our guest is Marc & The Plattitudes. Marc Platt and his band drop by for stories and music and will be filling us all in on what's been happening since the recent release of their highly-touted CD Bitter & Sweet. Then we’re taking on all topics, as well as any other news of the day. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Marc Platt Talented guitarist, prolific songwriter, and down-to earth human being. These are just a few terms to describe Marc Platt, a Los Angeles-based, singer-songwriter who is making a difference in the lives of other musicians. Listen to the show Platt’s experience in the music business goes back to the early 80s, first as an artist and then as an employee of Rhino Records, back when the record label was in its infant stages. By the mid 80s, Platt had returned to performing full-time and formed the band, The Real Impossibles. Their 1986 EP, “Play Loud” was produced by Plimsouls’ (“Million Miles Away”) front-man, Peter Case and The Real Impossibles video, “Turn My World” was featured on MTV that same year. “When I was starting out in the 80s, I was a huge fan of the Plimsouls,” Platt said. “I hung out with Peter Case who took me under his wings and introduced me to people such as Elvis Costello, Peter Buck (REM), John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Earle, and T-Bone Burnett. “I really got an education watching these amazing artists work. I was a very lucky guy for getting to hang out with my idols at an impressionable age.” Platt went on to play in a few bands, but his real success has been in songwriting. He wrote songs for Universal’s 1993 A Taste for Killing and 1994 The Raffle in which two of the songs were featured on the soundtrack. His music has also been featured on ESPN. “I got lucky enough to get some songs in movies in the 90s,” said Platt. “They weren’t hit movies, but I found that getting to the producers was much more beneficial than music supervisors. I still make money off cable and DVDs from those projects.” More recently, Platt’s songs have been featured on TV shows such as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, E-News True Hollywood, and Passions. He continues to write music for a variety of TV shows. After our interview with Marc & The Plattitudes, we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including beer tasting, sports talk, and rants, during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Time to Bitch. Melissa Cox on Late Night | On Wednesday January 25, 2012, at 8pm/PST Swoop’s World Late Night welcomes the return of singer/songwriter Melissa Cox. Melissa was a guest last year when she was on her Odometer Destroyer tour. She returns to give us the lowdown on her new album and what's been happening since we last talked. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. A national touring artist, veteran songwriter, guitarist, mandolin player, and classically trained vocalist, Melissa Cox pushes the boundaries of folk, Celtic and acoustic music. Not an artist who is easily categorized, Cox strives to fuse her diverse musical tastes and influences into a style all her own. From Celtic Fusion to Trip Folk, World to acoustic electronic, modern rock to classical choir, Melissa Cox is an old soul with a new sound. Listen to the show A mezzo-soprano whose voice is often compared to those of Grace Slick, Sinead O'Connor and Dolores O'Riordan (the Cranberries), the vocal power is matched only by her tenacity and determination to make it as an independent artist. And that resolve has paid off with national and regional songwriting awards, opening spots for artists like the Spin Doctors, Sister Hazel, Smash Mouth, and Three Dog Night, and headlining performances at scores of festivals across the U.S. Since her early days as a shy girl singing Jewel covers at open mics in Delaware, Melissa has blossomed into a respected rock artist, who cites Tori Amos, Porcupine Tree, Bjork, and Massive Attack as influences. The lead singer of the national touring Celtic Fusion band Mythica, Melissa has fused her rock influences with Irish and Scottish music, a sound that has won the group headlining spots at some of the largest Celtic festivals in the nation. Melissa's new concept album "Harmonious Maladies" is the singers third solo album, and her sixth album when counting her releases with Mythica. The concept of the album, Melissa explains, is juxtapositions and diametric ideas..."a musical manifestation of my slightly bi-polar life." The 11-track album, produced by Melissa, was released November 18, 2011, and funded entirely with fan support through Kickstarter. Her most experimental and honest to date, "Harmonious Maladies" deals with a variety of issues across the emotional spectrum, including depression, psychotherapy, addiction, alcoholism, and gun control, balanced by jubilant tunes about love, travel, nature, and the Divine. One song on the album pays homage to one of Cox's heroes, actress and author Carrie Fisher. "I read Carries Postcards from the Edge when I was a teenager, and it really stuck with me. And I just love Star Wars," says Cox, a self proclaimed sci-fi nerd. "Carrie reminds me to have a sense of humor during my dark times." The album will also feature a cover of "Gone Away" by 90s band The Offspring, a nod to the influence 90s rock had on the singer, who turns the song from a head-banger into a ballad with cello. Melissa tours the U.S. and most frequently tours the East Coast and Colorado. After our interview with Melissa Cox, we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, sports talk, rants and more. This week on “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits, we’ll taste Casco Bay Brown Ale From Casco Bay Brewery, located in Portland, Maine. Larry “Lak” Henderson on Late Night | On Wednesday December 28, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST Swoop’s World Late Night welcomes Larry "Lak" Henderson. Join us as we get to know this entrepreneur and how he is using rap, and hip-hop to assist in educating our youth. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. New Jersey entrepreneur Larry “Lak” (pronounced LOCK) Henderson is the co-founder, CEO, recording artist and co-producer of Smart Music Entertainment. Since 2007, Smart Music has created high-quality educational hip-hop music using a blend of educational lyrics and underground hip-hop beats. Their new CD, Lesson One: Hip-Hop and Education, uses rap lyrics and today’s hip-hop beats to hit on topics such as money management, African-American impact, politics, geography and history. Listen to the show Hot lyrics and dope rhymes are nothing without a flow, and when it comes to combining all three elements, no one does it better than Lak… Lak (which stands for Life and Knowledge) is a brilliant, versatile lyricist devoted to staking his claim on hip-hop and taking it to new and exciting levels. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he began rhyming in the fourth grade. Growing up in the center of hip-hop’s golden era of the 1980s, when true lyricism dominated the airways, Lak was inspired by the legends of that era – Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, KRS-One and EPMD to name a few. After listening to Lak flow, it’s easy to assess that he is the new version of an old school hip-hop tradition. He captures the heart of what hip-hop was built upon – realism and passion. A true entertainer, Lak is known for his stage show that hypnotizes audiences with intense rhymes, ill metaphors and a rousing delivery. He was an on-air personality at Rutgers University’s WRSU-FM 88.7 where he was the host of the popular “Led-Lak Show." He has performed in countless shows and rap battles and has appeared on numerous underground mixtapes. Lak has also been featured as a guest on several radio and television programs including CBS Radio and BET. He earned a B.A. from Rutgers University. The Clouds on Late Night | On Wednesday December 21, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST Swoop’s World Late Night welcomes local band The Clouds in studio. Join us as we get to know the members of the band, their music, and enjoy some in studio live performances. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show The Clouds Once upon a time there was a young cloud named Jose. He decided to share some thoughts in musical form. He asked Carina, who could sing beautifully to help make the songs sound pretty. She did, and it was good. But then one day Jose thought, it needs more. It needs a pair of hands to give the songs a classy feel. So they both went to their friend Pam's house and asked if she would like to join in on the fun. She said yes but only if her family of piano's could join. They couldn't say no. So Jose wrote songs, carina sang the pretty parts and pam and her toy piano's sang the classy parts. They moved to Long Beach, Ca and met two humans named Al and Jasin. The three young clouds asked them if they could add some solid rhythm to their thoughts and melodies. Al and Jasin both said yes and turned themselves into clouds. Now they all float along making music and share thoughts about what they see along the way. Fortunately for them, modern day technology has allowed them to record their songs and will be shared with anyone who is looking to listen. With everything in place, their journey will be similar to a poem by Diamond Dave Whitaker. "Cast a wide net, find a common thread. Let life flourish. Don't panic, just keep it organic." Members: Pam Gartner - vox/piano Jose Serna - vox/guitar Carina Downing - vox/synth/flute Jason Cordero - Bass Alvaro Rodriguez -Drums After our interviews with The Clouds, we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including beer tasting, sports talk, and rants, during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Time to Bitch. John Kaye on Late Night | On Wednesday November 16, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST we are happy to welcome musician John Kaye as our guest on Swoop’s World Late Night. After John we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and any other news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. "Music is not an option for me. It's my heritage." ~ John Kaye I've traversed the world in my youth with many bands. I played the Vegas circuit for over 25 years in several different genres. As an original songwriter I opted to pursue my own original material in 2008 and moved to L.A. I've not looked back. My sound is unique in style and presentation. There is nothing currenlty in the industry like the music we put out. It is always well received by listeners wherever I go. Listen to the show I am proud to be playing with 2 of my all time favorite players. Rich Niego & Iain Hersey who are monster musicians in their own right. I was named after my Grandfather, Johnny "Ukulele" Kaaihue, the Worlds Most Reknowed Master Of The Ukulele. His father, my great Grandfather, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole was the last Hawaiian Royal to be buried in Hawaii in full Regalia with a Hawaiian Royal Honor gaurd procession in 1922. We are all relatives of the Royal Hawaiian family of Hawaii. My father, Norman Kaye is the State Poet Emeritius of Nevada and he wrote songs for many celebrities including Johnny Mathis and Perry Como. My Aunt, Mary Kaye is "The First Lady Of Rock" and the namesake of The Mary Kaye Stratocaster Fender Custom Guitar. This is the first custom guitar made by Leo Fender and the first guitar ever named after a person. Her group The Mary Kaye Trio are the Pioneers of The Las Vegas Lounge Scene. They created the first ever late night lounge act in Las Vegas. She was also inducted into The Musicians Hall Of Fame with Ella Fitgerald and Sarah Vaughn by Louis B. Armstrong in 1961. She was also one of the top female jazz guitarists of all time. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 83 on February 17th, 2007. I miss her deeply. She was also my mentor and mother to me. My Cousin and Brother, Jay Kaye is the Blue Messiah of Spain and one of the most flawless guitar players alive. Cousin Henry Kapono is 1/2 the famous duo named Cecilio and Kapono. He is also known as the Wild Hawaiian. On April 30th, 2011 John Kaye was inducted into the Las Vegas Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. After our interview with John Kaye, we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including beer tasting, sports and food during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Real Estate Report. Dr. Nathaniel J. Williams on Primetime | On Thursday November 10, 2011 at 12pm/PST our guest will be Dr. Nathaniel J. Williams. Dr. Williams’ journey from orphan and foster child to Doctor of Education, nonprofit founder, and author has been both challenging and rewarding. Dr. Williams has proven that success can be attained when a person possesses commitment, tenacity, and integrity. In his career, he has fulfilled a multitude of roles, including direct care worker, foster parent, house parent, entrepreneur, nonprofit and for-profit organization founder, Chief Executive Officer, adjunct professor, scholar-in-residence, talk show host, and internatinal motivational speaker. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show "Self-help” sometimes sounds like a catchphrase. For Dr. Nathaniel J. Williams – “Dr. Nat” to his friends and fans – it’s a calling. The author of seven books (including his latest, “Attaining Your Personal Best”), TV talk show host, an in-demand inspirational speaker, and father of seven has lived a story like no other, and his commitment to helping others find their way successfully has made his remarkable story all the more meaningful. Orphaned at a young age and a product of the New York City foster home system, Dr. Williams rose from his humble beginnings to earn three masters degrees and a doctorate. Utilizing his experience with the public welfare system, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for helping others, since 1993 he has been the President and CEO of HumanWorks Affiliates, Inc., a cluster of eight corporations focused on human services. HumanWorks employs over 200 people and has an operating budget of over $10 million. Nowadays, Dr. Williams devotes a great deal of time and energy to providing training and workshops for employees and community members in areas such as stress management, time management, ethics, conflict avoidance and resolution, and customer service and loyalty. Earlier this year he visited U.S. troops in England, Kosovo, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Italy as part of an Armed Forces Entertainment tour in celebration of Black History Month. In a time where even some of the more successful of us find ourselves under unusual economic strain, his practical approach to surviving hard times resonates more than ever, and requires professional and interpersonal skills that will allow people to stand out from the crowd. And it’s not only the most successful and visible who are in his purview: he speaks often about the intricacies of the adoption and foster care systems and senior housing. Whether he is wearing the hat of an author, speaker, TV personality, social service executive, or successful businessman, Dr. Williams always has an encouraging word as well as a plan of action. Tanna Frederick on Late Night | On Wednesday November 9, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST we are happy to welcome actress Tanna Frederick as our guest on Swoop's World Late Night. After our Tanna we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and any other news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Tanna Frederick, currently starring as a dog in the title role in “Sylvia” at the Edgemar Center, is receiving accolades for her work. “Frederick is nothing short of terrific...Four paws up!" said Jose Ruiz of ReviewPlays.com of a recent performance. Frederick can also be seen on the big screen also starring opposite Noah Wyle in Henry Jaglom’s romantic comedy “Queen of the Lot.” She stars as Maggie Chase, as actress desperate to claw her way off the B-list of action films into major movie stardom. Listen to the show Betty Jo Tucker of ReelReviews.com says of the chemistry between Frederick and Wyle, “their ‘opposites attract’ banter reminds me of old-time movie couples like Tracy and Hepburn. And their onscreen chemistry is undeniable.” Frederick won Best Actress at the Wild Rose Independent Film Festival for her role. Last year, Frederick starred in “Just 45 Minutes from Broadway” at the Edgemar. Suffused with a near-Chekhovian mix of the wistful and the melancholy, playwright Henry Jaglom's world premiere comedy explored the complex emotional lives of theater folk. The play will be released as a feature film later this year starring Frederick and Judd Nelson. Frederick's performance in her first feature with Jaglom, “Hollywood Dreams,” earned her Best Actress kudos at the Montana International Film Festival and the Fargo Film Festival, and propelled the film to Best Picture honors at the San Luis Obispo Film Festival and to Best Comedy at WorldFest Houston. She was named Method Fest’s “Performer to Watch” and has also received the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival’s “Maverick” Award. Off-screen, Frederick has proved just as driven and talented. A fitness aficionado who runs daily, Frederick recently ranked 52nd out of 1,321 women in her division in the LA Marathon in 2010. She is an expert at Tae Kwon Do and a passionate surfer. Ms. Frederick, along with famed surfer Shaun Tomson, founded “Project Save Our Surf,” an annual surfing event that benefits various ocean charities. The Fourth Annual PSOS: SURF 24 was held in Santa Monica this past October and benefited Heal the Bay. She is also founder of the Iowa Film Festival, which debuted successfully four years ago and has tripled in size. After our interview with Tanna Frederick, we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including beer tasting, sports and food during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Real Estate Report. Daron Ker on Primetime | On Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 12pm/PST, filmaker Daron Ker, is our guest on Swoop’s World Primetime. Daron joins us to tell us about his films and life as an independent filmaker. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. The map says it is over 8200 miles from Cambodia to the United States. But for filmmaker Daron Ker, bridging the gap between the two cultures is at the root of his passion for storytelling and the driving force behind his burgeoning career. Born in the “Killing Fields” era of tyranny and violence, one of his earliest childhood memories is seeing Stanley Kubrick’s epic “Spartacus” projected onto a sheet in an internment camp. Soon after, Ker and his family emigrated to the United States, where Daron began to slowly realize that his destiny was to tell great stories on screen. Listen to the show Since attending film school in San Francisco, Ker has made two impressive feature films that illustrate culture clash in unexpected, poignant, and surprising places. “Rice Field of Dreams” follows Cambodian refugee Joe Cook, who escaped the Khmer Rouge and eventually became a chef in an Alabama restaurant, as Cook returns to Cambodia to form the nation’s first competitive international baseball team. “I Ride” focuses on biker culture, and remains stateside as Ker’s camera focuses on the Fryed Brothers Band, the best rock band you’ve never heard of. Ker follows along as the brothers travel the roads of America, playing concerts for motorcycle clubs, recalling old stories, and creating new legends along the way. Filmed with sensitivity and an outsider’s keen eye for detail, both films mark Ker as a young filmmaker to watch, and both films will be released by FilmBuff this December. While continuing to promote his two very different films, Daron Ker is also preparing for his first narrative feature, “Holiday in Cambodia,” which will be shot by veteran cinematographer Hiro Narita, and tells the story of a young Cambodian living in America who is deported back to his homeland, with unexpected results. Ker is committed to representing the Cambodian culture on film, and one day to help open a film school in his native country. But he also considers himself a storyteller with universal appeal. “I gravitate towards stories that speak to more than one audience,” Ker says, “and that’s what I think makes my films unique.” Having traveled over 8200 miles and back again to find his own style, Ker is poised to tell powerful stories that otherwise might remain untold. He performs a set each week, and books two other talented artists to play sets as well from all over Southern California. The Hum House just started releasing a podcast as well which can be found on iTunes which features interviews from the artist as well as some live recordings from each show. Playing weekly at The Hum House has given Clark the personal goal of writing much more than ever before. Writing is so important to him, that in 2011 he has committed to writing one song per week, and usually trying it out at the show that week. The idea is that at the end of the year Clark will have a total of 53+ songs to choose from to record his next album. Join us at 8pm/PST! Divinity Roxx on Primetime | On Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 12pm/PST, outstanding musician/world renowned bass player Divinity Roxx, is our guest on Swoop’s World Primetime. Divinity joins us to tell us about all of he great things she's doing, including her appearance at the upcoming Bass Player LIVE! Event. Listen to the interview Divinity Roxx "Thanks to my Mom every one of my pre-school days started with music. She'd wake me up in the morning to the sounds of whatever song she needed to hear to get her through the day. As a little girl, my Mom was the most powerful person I knew and since music could make her mightier, it was the most powerful thing in the whole world in my eyes. As I got older, listening, dancing and going crazy to music wasn't enough. I had to have my hands all over making it too. It took me a minute to find my strength, but after the clarinet, the chorus and the handbell ensemble in elementary school I found my pulpit rapping and free-styling at the lunch table in high school. I graduated to rapping with my boys in front of a crowd and knew that pure joy and freedom were attainable even for a girl from Atlanta, like me. In college I picked up the bass, fell in love with the bass, dropped out of college (like Kanye, but I'm going back someday) and went on tour with the best bass player in the world (bow to Victor Wooten), and then I went on tour with the biggest star in the world (curtsy to Beyoncé). Now I have a million little stories to tell and music is the only way I know how to tell them." Divinity Roxx is a dynamic musical artist who counts world renowned bass player, acclaimed rapper and producer as credits on her resume. Growing up in Atlanta, GA, Divinity explored music from a young age. She started rapping in junior high school and began playing the bass in college. When Divinity combined the two skills, she found her unique ability to play ferocious bass lines and rap simultaneously. This display of finesse and dexterity got the attention of Victor Wooten, arguably one of the best bass-players in the world. Divinity was a featured part of Wooten's live show from 2001 through 2005 and can be heard on two of his albums, Live In America (2001, Compass) and Soul Circus (2005, Vanguard). In 2006 Divinity joined Beyonce’s all-girl band and has been touring the world with this global megastar, playing to sold-out crowds from Australia to Brazil. Divinity is a featured part of Beyonce’s current DVD collection, including the Beyonce Experience (2008), I Am…Sasha Fierce (2010), and I Am…Yours (2010). Divinity Roxx has recently developed her own signature bass guitar with Warwick and is currently working on a solo CD set for release in 2011... Bass Player LIVE! Bass Player LIVE! is back to bring players, manufacturers, and artists together in an intimate environment for hands-on access to the latest instruments, equipment and instruction on playing technique and application. This year's event will feature two-days of exhibition, live demos and clinics on October 22 and 23 at SIR Studios, and a special evening concert at Key Club on Saturday, October 22 featuring performances by Jack Casady, Larry Graham, James Jamerson Tribute Band featuring James Jamerson Jr., and Bass Player LIVE! All-Star Jam hosted by Steve Bailey. The exhibition/clinics are for players of all levels, and manufacturer exhibits will showcase current basses and equipment to the bass community at large. All musicians are welcome. To purchase tickets to the exhibition/clinic or concert, please visit http://www.bassplayer.com/bplive/5294 The evening concert will feature a "Lifetime Achievement Award" presentation to funk legend Larry Graham, rock visionary Jack Casady, and posthumously to Motown Master James Jamerson. Casady will open the concert with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and multi-instrumentalist Barry Mitterhoff, as Acoustic Hot Tuna, a Jamerson Tribute Band featuring James Jamerson, Jr. and Pino Palladino will follow, | 10/17/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

After our guests we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and any other news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Robert Jon and the Wreck Robert Jon and the Wreck is a quintet that really rocks. Southern California native Robert Jon found a passion for music through the piano when he was six years old, and learned guitar and drums soon after. Eager to share his music with others, he played in several bands and began writing songs before finding four other guys with a similar vision. Their latest album, Fire Started, is a blues-heavy full-length album with a soft country feel and edgy classic-rock nuance. Fresh off their first national tour Los Angeles natives Robert Jon and the Wreck have brought a hard blues rock sound reminiscent of some of the classic rock greats. The group formed in February 2011. The combined result was a harder, more rockin' sound with the same great singer/songwriter influences on the previous Robert Jon Band albums. They are currently planning their next national tour and playing in the Southern California area. Pick up their new album Fire Started on September 2nd, 2011. Listen to the show Join us at 8pm/PST! Twirling Betty Band on Late Night LIVE from The Guitar Merchant | On Wednesday October 12, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST we are taking the show on the road and headed to Canoga Park to broadcast LIVE from the Guitar Merchant during their Open Mic event. Our scheduled guest for the night is the Twirling Betty Band. And we are sure to meet a host of other musicians to introduce to you as well. As always we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and any other news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show The Twirling Betty Band Justefanie Strachan (Founder / Writer / Lead Vocals / Keys) Garry Corman (Co-founder / Writer / Vocals / Guitar) Guy Arad (Writer / Lead Guitarist / Vocals) Michael Gussin (Drums & Cowbell!) Robin Hild (Bass Extraordinaire) Twirling Betty came together in July 2010, while Justefanie and Garry were lying around smoking medicinals following Justefanie's arduous string of moves between various points in the the greater LA area. She was finally able to settle down once the FBI removed her from their "person of interest" list. The FBI was going to add Garry to this list but took one look at him and declined. Against the better advice of his brother the attorney, Garry did allow himself to become the svengali-like guru to aid in Justefanie's rise to enlightenment..and reasonable rent...oh yeah...and they penned a tune or two along the way. One dark and blustery night, a tall, mysterious stranger with the subtle fragrance of falafel & Mediterranean mint walked into the Guitar Merchant and threw down some Dylan, plucked out some Bach, looked up and said, "Hi, I'm Guy Arad....and you only wish you were." It then came to pass that the embryonic Bettys needed a hot blonde to boost their audience appeal with the proletariat. It would also help if said blonde was "the s**t" on bass, rather than "the ditz" with a pretty face. Enter Robin Hild, former 80's icon of Scarlet and Black fame. And then came Gussin....... 'nuff said. No, seriously, every great band needs a walking metronome, and since the digital ones cost a shitload of scratch.... The Bettys settled for Cussin' Gussin, who is strictly analog, but reasonably rhythmic. After turning down fervent pleadings to become a rabbi at Valley Beth Shalom, Michael decided to throw his life away with The Bettys. Join us at 8pm/PST! After Johnny, we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and any other news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Johnny Shaw was born and raised on the Calexico/Mexicali border, the setting for his novel, DOVE SEASON. Although he has been writing for over twenty years, it took that same amount of time for him to finally revisit and explore the people and places of the Imperial Valley, California. He was a finalist for the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Award for Dove Season. Johnny received his MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA and over the course of his writing career has seen his screenplays optioned, sold and produced. As a playwright, his stage collaborations with actor Jaime Arze, NATURAL ACTS and A GOOD KIND OF CRAZY, have been performed throughout Los Angeles. Listen to the show For the last ten years, Johnny has taught screenwriting. He has lectured at both Santa Barbara City College and UC Santa Barbara. He is the owner of Johnny’s Used Books, formerly a brick-and-mortar bookstore in Los Angeles, now entirely online. Johnny lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, artist Roxanne Patruznick. About DOVE SEASON by Johnny Shaw: After ten years of coasting through life on a wave of good intentions and bad decisions, Jimmy Veeder returns to the Imperial Valley—a parched sprawl of alfalfa fields and yucca-dotted desert, as well as a hotbed for occasionally legal Mexican border crossings. Back home to see his ailing father Big Jack one last time, Jimmy establishes himself as a magnetically likeable narrator and hero who would rather use his lightning sense of humor than his six-foot-four physique to defend himself. At his father’s bedside Jimmy receives a peculiar request from the dying man: Cross the border into the lawless town of Mexicali, locate a specific prostitute named Yolanda, bring her back to Big Jack’s room, and leave for three hours. Not wanting to deny his old man one last thrill, Jimmy asks no questions and embarks for Mexico. Watching his back is childhood best friend Bobby Maves—a beer-swilling vato loco with a talent for starting (and winning) fistfights. A few bribes and brawls later they accomplish their mission and deliver Yolanda to Big Jack. Days later Jimmy wakes up with the hangover of a lifetime to find Yolanda’s corpse floating at the bottom of a cistern. No one has any idea what happened. Jimmy and Bobby’s search for answers drags them into the depths of the Mexican criminal underworld, where they learn that Yolanda’s visit to Big Jack may not have been solely for pleasure. Fueled by cerveza, tequila, and the relentless desire to make things right, Jimmy and Bobby navigate an increasingly treacherous landscape of vice and vengeance with a deadly gangster closing in on their trail. Almadeus Star Gioeli and Tanya Quinn on Late Night | On Wednesday September 21, 2011 at 8pm (PST) Swoop's World Late Night is back from our week off and we bring you two exciting guest segments. First we are happy to have musician, author, Healer and Troubadour Almadeus Star Gioeli as our guest on Swoop’s World Late Night. After Star, Tanya Quinn joins us to tell us about a great event that she, Sasha Kanno, and Aliye Aydin are involved in called Commune | Love | Prosper Local Harvest Dinner and Potluck. Then we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and any other news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show Almadeus Star Gioeli I am a living descendent of the mythological and historic Gods of Sicily. My friends call me "Star". That works for me. My life is as an Artist, Healer and Troubadour...a wandering singer of songs of love, truth, peace and freedom. In my wanderings I hope to find other's, like myself, who would love to live in a Sacred society in a Sacred land in a Sacred way. While "growing up" in this world I manifested many works of art, literature and science with the intention to redirect, fix or change the infrastructure of the secular world. I have since abandoned that idea and rather choose to prayerfully and compassionately let the mundane world go along its present path to oblivion while we, the living, create a totally new vision for the seeds of a new and Sacred world. I carry this vision in and around me as I go....and as i sing...and as I live and as I breathe. Local Harvest Dinner and Potluck On September 25, 2011 T’sSpace in collaboration with Farm Lot 59 and Beach Greens are hosting a Local Community Harvest Dinner at 2nd City Council Art Gallery. This event is designed to celebrate the nourishing organic, local food that farmers, gardeners, chefs and distributors bring to our tables and offer an opportunity to educate and empower our community on the importance of eating and supporting healthy, organic and locally harvested food and products. We hope to provide an opportunity for you to connect with the greater community and with one another in a casual, intimate setting. We invite you as a Long Beach resident, local organic farmer, community gardener, chef or food provider to join our table. We are inviting the community at large to do the same. We want this event to be an experience where people leave feeling empowered to make sustainable choices in their life, form personal relationships with the people who are growing and distributing food here in Long Beach, eat healthy nourishing food and connect to our community. Feel free to bring materials about your farm, garden or services. We will be highlighting participants that provide sustainable food to our tables. If you are interested in speaking please let us know. Depending on the number of participants we will at the very least make introductions. Join us at 8pm/PST! Listeners can call in live or join in via our online chat right here at Swoops World Live, or via our live Stickam steam there’s more than enough fun for everyone! Not near the computer? Robin Marvel on Primetime | On Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 4pm/PST, author and motivational speaker Robin Marvel, is our guest on Swoop’s World Primetime. After Robin we’ll have another segment of Gamers, plus odd news of the day and more. As a teen Robin was lacking the attention that so many teens need. She quickly learned the repercussions of choices she was making. "It was quite the reality check when I became a mother at the age of 17. I remember the day that I found out that I was having a baby girl. It was that moment that I made the commitment to myself and my daughter that we would not be a statistic. I worked hard and I am still working hard to make sure that is my truth," said Robin. Listen to the show She does not place blame on anyone in my childhood. I look back on it and know I am a stronger person. I have learned to make my choices for me and disregard the lifestyle I lived as a child. I have learned to treat my self with respect and honor and therefore influence and encourage the people in my life to do the same for themselves. Making the choice to take life on in the drivers seat is up to you. It is easy to watch the world pass by while you are being a victim. Being a victim is the easy way out, removing that victim personality out of your life will give you the opportunity to see life from a whole new perspective. Each choice you make has an astounding effect of where you are and where you are going in this wonderful journey of life. Robin has made the choice to work hard and life a fantastic life full of opportunity. Robin states, "I am now the proud mother of five amazing daughters that defy all odds of a teen mother statistic. I am also living my dreams as an author and Motivational speaker." No matter where you have been it is where you are going that really matters. Take the time today and everyday to live limitless. Your life, your choices ~ your utopia. Robin Marvel wants everyone to live an inspired life and embrace who they truly are. With her three books "Awakening Comsciousness A Woman's Guide" "Awakening Consciousness A Girl's Guide!" and "Awakening Consciousness A Boy's Guide!" she is awakening consciousness worldwide. Eddie Cohn on Late Night | On Wednesday September 7, 2011 at 8pm (PST) we are happy to have musician Eddie Cohn return to the Swoop's Word Late Night studio. We'll find up what Eddie's been up to, his new music, and why he loves Instagram so much. Hopefully we can convince him to play a tune or two live in our studio again. After Eddie, we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Eddie’s life has always been one of mutability. He fell in love with music as a child, teaching himself the piano at age three, and moving to a variety of other instruments. But his musical career almost came to a halt when he was diagnosed at the age of 12 with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic disorder that causes painful inflammation throughout the entire body. Listen to the show “It kept me out of school for two years and the pain was debilitating,” Eddie remembers. ”It was a frustrating and scary time for me. I remember days when I couldn’t move my arms or nights when I would sit in front of my drum set just praying I would be able to play music again. When I could play, I remember going down into the basement to pound on my drum kit just out of anger.” This intense period of time has left quite a mark on the young musician, what he describes as a “scar.” But, says Eddie, “that’s where I write from. That’s where I go to when I write songs. Those feelings of pain, loss, death will always inspire me.” You can feel this intensity and fire in everything he’s done since, including his acclaimed second album Stay With Me (from 2010). The self-released disc has garnered comparisons to artists like Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, and praise from bloggers and reviewers, alike, including John Soeder of The Cleveland Plain Dealer who called it “a rewarding collection of intricately crafted tunes with emotionally impressionistic lyrics.” While Stay With Me overflows with lush arrangements, the live versions are a much different animal, both by choice and due to the economic realities of being on the road. “Touring with a full band is expensive,” Eddie says, “and I didn’t want it to be just me onstage strumming a guitar. So, I had to decide what instruments were absolutely necessary, and to me, it had to be drums.” Eddie and his drummer Adam Gust retreated to the studio to rearrange the songs from Stay With Me for this stripped down live setting, with Eddie learning how to utilize loop pedals alongside his work on guitar and piano. Inspired by this, and the response they got from audiences form his home in L.A. to the SXSW Music Festival and beyond, the two recorded these new arrangements, resulting in Lights On, a three-song, self-released EP that brings out even more of the melancholy, joy, and fervor of his already-emotion rich songs. “Watch You (Walk Away)”, an intense, tribal drum-heavy plea on Stay With Me, has become a quiet reproach featuring nothing but Eddie’s stirring and sexy vocals, Fender Rhodes, and strings. Too, the title track from his last full-length, all downtempo Zero 7 grooves, is rendered even more haunting when held to just piano and a light pulsing drum beat. While Eddie has already seen the effects of these new songs when he plays them live, the new EP is also having an impact on the folks at iTunes, who have featured Lights On on both their Indie Spotlight and Singer-Songwriter pages. Kim Fowley on Primetime | On Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 4pm/PST, Kim Fowley , is our guest on Swoop’s World Primetime. After Kim we’ll have another segment of Gamers, plus odd news of the day and more. During the early 1960s Kim Fowley was involved, as co-producer/co-publisher, with a string of successful records produced in Los Angeles. With Gary Paxton, he recorded the novelty song “Alley Oop” which reached # 1 on the charts in 1960, credited to the non-existent group The Hollywood Argyles. The multi-talented legend worked through the years with a wide range of performing artists including Paul Revere & The Raiders, Gene Vincent, KISS, and with Joan Jett helped to form The Runaways. Listen to the show Today Fowley stays busy with a number of projects, including recently releasing the CD West Coast Revelation, with music written and performed with former Byrd member John York. Respectfully declining invitations to join both the Monkees and Eagles as they were being formed, John York was in the Byrds from 1968-1970 through the Ballad of Easy Rider period. After John left the band, Kim Fowley stepped in to write songs for the Byrds with Skip Battin. As rare survivors of one of the most tumultuous and exciting periods in Rock ‘n’ Roll history, it is only natural that two would collaborate on West Coast Revelation. Between the acoustic-driven songs are short bits of conversation between York and Fowley. The interviews focus on York’s past, the musical scene in the ‘60s, what rock means to us all, and insights into the songs on the disc. West Coast Revelation tells the story of the 60s with the veracity that can only come through those who have lived through it. John York and Kim Fowley flowed with this revelation as it ran through the streets of L.A. in the mid-sixties; a time of creativity that remains unparalleled. Kim, the legendary wild-eyed prophet, gave momentum to the revelation while John York became its gentle musical craftsman; a skilled artisan. From Alley-Oop to The Byrds, they helped shape and form the times, unseen, sometimes unwashed and unnoticed, they both were there riding its rapids. Because they were there, we can now hear the stories and re-experience the passion of it because, like Kim says on the opening track, "Angels and Trucks,” "angels never die." West Coast Revelation is an opportunity to sit in on a rare front-porch session of songs and storytelling. The songs herein are new, unique and original musings of the times; then and now. This album captures the essence those 'silver Sixties,' but the songs refuse to be bound by time. Songs like "Psychedelic" and "Rock and Roll Is Another Name For Freedom," drive us closer to the eye of the diamond of the West Coast Revelation and the wild, cosmic spirit of those times. It's a revelation, which can never be captured, only vicariously experienced through prophets and artisans like Kim Fowley and John York. John York is the last pure voice of the Silver Sixties to make it through intact to the first decade of the 21st Century. He was a member of the Byrds, post-Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons, from 1968 throughout the Easy Rider Era until right before Chestnut Mare. John's vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John,) Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet,) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band) and many others. After Nick, we’ll be taking on all topics, and of course our regular Brewskis, sports, and any other news of the day segments. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Nick Nolan is a two-time winner of ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year and also claimed the #1 spot on Amazon.com in it's category, spending nearly a year in the top 10. He is the author of Double Bound, Stings Attached, and his third novel Black As Snow. Listen to the show About Black As Snow by Nick Nolan: Young Sebastian Black is a handsome, likeable religious movement leader living in modern day Los Angeles. With the help of his Kitty, the perfect modern wicked witch, they've created the highly successful, Evo-Love movement. Thanks to donations from around the world, Sebastian and Kitty live in opulence, with penthouses, luxury cars, and a plethora of beautiful women, and men, at Sebastian’s disposal. Although Sebastian senses that there is something special about him and that he has a specific destiny to fulfill, he can’t help but feeling their liberal spending is immoral. And when his own words cause an Evo-Love follower to murder his family and commit suicide, his doubts about his preaching become so potent that he must escape his mother’s greedy grasp. Sebastian’s concerns over their religious movement aren’t the only reason he needs to flee; his life is in danger, literally. Not everyone likes what he has to say, and Christian militants are convinced he is the anti-Christ and must be stopped—permanently. Receiving an increasing number of death threats every day, Sebastian retreats up the California coast. But as things intensify, Sebastian is placed in grave danger and it seems the web of lies, secrets, risk, and greed that has been spun around Sebastian may be too dense for him to escape. Cory Joseph Clark on Primetime | On Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 4pm PST singer/songwriter Cory Joseph Clark is our guest on Swoop’s World Primetime. After Cory we’ll have another segment of Gamers, plus odd news of the day and more. Cory Joseph Clark is part songwriter, part performer, part guitar player, part singer, part artist, part hired gun, part entrepreneur, and all dreamer. Based out of Long Beach California, Clark has released two solo EPs, and two EPs with his band Sleepless Me. Listen to the show His song “Throwing Stones” was nominated for a Hollywood Music In Media Award, he was nominated two years in a row as “Best Male Performer” by SoCal Acoustic Music Competition, and his older band Sleepless Me won “Best Alternative Band” at the 2008 Orange County Music Awards. Playing in bands and with indie and label solo artists his whole life as a guitar/vocal sideman, music has taken him on tours of the the US and abroad. But Clark is always focusing on his own music as the roots of his expression. In 2011 after releasing his EP “Throwing Stones”, he started a local Long Beach weekly singer/songwriter showcase called THE HUM HOUSE. Join us at 4pm/PST! Carrie Wade on Late Night | On Wednesday July 20, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night our guest is singer/songwriter Carrie Wade. Carrie is a talented and accomplished musician whose song "The Old Ways" is currently tracking at number 11 on the Root's Music Report, Top 50 Folk list. Then we’re taking on all topics, as well as any other news of the day. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Listen to the show With a picturesque sound that is distinctly American yet colored by the exotic, Carrie Wade is a recording artist who delivers her personal evocations with powerful subtlety and a sublime sense of emotion. Filmic textures harken back to the classic soundtracks of the 1960s, from which melancholy and simplicity of the time merge into the modern world of today where Wade’s songs move the audience in the sometimes violent, sometimes peaceful ebb and flow of living. Joy, sorrow, regret, love, hope, betrayal, and soft-driven heartache are immersed in lyrics where struggle and triumph break through to resilience, settling into a profound, sensual intensity only Wade can evoke. Wade’s debut album, The Old Ways blends a palette of disparate genres and unusual instrumentation into an artful whole of beautiful substance. Wade conceived The Old Ways in collaboration with two select co-producers. As a multi-instrumentalist, Peter Kearns of New Zealand provided arrangements incorporating funky piano, swirling mellotron, harmonium, and elegant string arrangements among other inventive combinations. Bruce Springsteen cohort Marty Rifkin lent to The Old Ways a refined sense of Country, Blues, Folk, and Rock with his Nashville-caliber command of pedal and lap steel, dobro, electric and bass guitar. Modern as they are reflective of pop’s halcyon years, Kearns’ contributions were interwoven in natural concert with the more American traditions represented by Rifkin. Carrie Wade’s music has attracted listeners hungry for songs where expectations are heightened rather than lowered, making “It’s Just Blood,” “Needles In The Waves,” “Cuddling With Doom,” and the title track popular staples of terrestrial and internet radio stations alike. At iacmusic.com, five of her songs have entered the Top 10, with three reaching #1. Recently, an acoustic track not on the album, “Broken Soldier,” had the distinction of not only enjoying seven weeks at #1 on IAC’s Folk/Acoustic Rock/Americana chart, but was also lodged for a good while at #39 on Neil Young’s Living With War Today page at neilyoung.com. Other recognitions include Los Angeles Music Awards’ Adult Alternative Female Singer-Songwriter of the Year for her song, “It’s Just Blood.” As the second song on The Old Ways, “It’s Just Blood” also has been featured in the Top 500 entries of Billboard’s World Songwriting Contest. Print media, including Leicester Bangs of the UK, RootsTime out of Belgium, bluerailroad.com and the laexaminer.com are taking notice of and responding quite favorably to The Old Ways. After our interview with Carrie Wade we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including beer tasting, sports and food during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Late Night Snackins. Deborah Crooks on Late Night | On Wednesday July 13, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night our guest is singer/songwriter Deborah Crooks. Then we’re taking on all topics, as well as any other news of the day. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Deborah Crooks is a seeker. The San Francisco Bay Area-born and bred singer/songwriter grew up at the nexus of two tectonic plates; close to a city known for its history of social, musical and political upheaval. These underlying conduits of tension seem bred into those from The Bay Area, but few more so than Crooks. As a performer Crooks wasn’t born until her twenties, though she remembers writing songs as a young child. Something in those early songs spoke to Crooks’ future , illuminating a self that was yet to be. These days Crooks is a vibrant artist carrying on the San Francisco tradition of powerful female singer/songwriters with literate lyrics and progressive musical attitudes; well respected within the music scene and increasingly so outside of it. Listen to the show The lid came off of Crooks’ creative self during her studies at Colorado’s The Naropa Institute. The ecumenical Buddhist-based educational philosophy of the school inspired Crooks to take up Buddhist practice, begin studying yoga and to see her creative side as a spiritual outlet. Around the same time Crooks experienced the Telluride Folk Festival, and was inspired to walk in the footsteps of artists such as Michelle Shocked and Shawn Colvin. Little did Crooks know that she was embarking on a new life path. If yoga became the rock upon which Crooks life was built, music became the lifeblood. Having built a worldview through the lens of opportunity and tragedy, Crooks sees in her surroundings the opportunity to make the world a better place. She has lived through earthquakes, personal loss and even the 9/11 attacks in New York City. As a songwriter, Crooks reflects the contradictions she sees in the world in song, unveiling in her lyrics truths that are simultaneously pragmatic and mystical. The Blues/Americana musical blend that is her canvas is simply the base from which Crooks’ songs grow. Ultimately, her music is a cultural ecotone born of her California roots, her spiritual development, her transcendant instinct and the quest for enlightenment that is both of and divergent from the disparate influences that bore it. The various tensions that swirl about the life of Deborah Crooks have catalyzed a songwriting talent that is soul-wise and edgy. Combine this with Crooks’ distinctive voice and you’ve discovered an artist capable of owning a room. Deborah Crooks doesn’t so much blow you away as she creeps into the questing places in your soul and insinuates herself as the reflective voice that sheds wisdom on a worrisome world. It’s this quality that first gained Crooks the attention of RockerGirl Magazine for her 2003 debut EP 5 Acres. The Roberta Donnay-produced EP landed Crooks on the RockerGirl Discoveries compilation and gained Crooks a national audience for the first time. In 2007 Crooks followed up with an EP entitled Turn It All Red, a stepping stone to her first full-length album Adding Water To Ashes, released in 2009. 2010 has seen the release of two EPs from the prolific singer/songwriter. It’s All Up To You was made possible by a Bay Bridged Grant and shows Crooks’ social conscience in full force, while Other Halves displays some of Crooks’ most focused songwriting to date alongside a powerful cover of Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold”. Her work is fueled by periodic returns to India to further her yoga and vocal studies and write. Considering that Crooks and her band have recently begun to find the sort of magic that is born of chemistry, talent, hard work and time spent together, such personal rebirth could be the charge that leads Deborah Crooks onto the national stage to stay. Crooks will spend the winter of 2010/2011 in India, another leg on her socio-artistic journey. From there the sky is | 7/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jimi Yamagishi on Primetime | On Thursday July 07, 2011 at 4pm (PST), on Swoop’s World Radio Primetime, we have singer/songwriter Jimi Yamagishi as our guest. After Jimi we’ll have another segment of Gamers from Sean and Max, plus odd news of the day and more. Having toured the California coast since the mid seventies, Jimi Yamagishi is one of those artists whose range of experience & depth of emotion translates into a genre-defying range of music, defined only by his warm vocals & eloquence in lyric. Listen to the show His current release, “Talkstory”, derives it’s title from the Hawaiian phrase for hangin’ out with friends, sharing life & enjoying the moment. This is what this collection of songs is all about, from his first inspirations in “Guitarpickin’ Preacher” to his thoughts about the passing of time in the title cut. Jimi speaks from a deeper place, painting stories with words & music, in a unique style that is all his own. He also treasures his friends & posts to his blog often. You can find his thoughts @ www.myspace.com/guitaryoda. Jimi tends to see the world in lyrical terms, & writes songs that are almost conversational in thought, easy & comfortable to listen to. Born & raised in East Los Angeles, his cross-cultural influences from teriyaki to tortillas gave him a broader perspective & appreciation for the world around him. As a child, the radio was always on at home, with orchestrated pop from the likes of Andre Kostelanetz & children’s music from old 45’s filling the rooms. A neighbor’s bossa nova record, & the emergence of the folk movement in the 60’s broadened his appreciation for other kinds of music, & after an epiphany in 1970, he began playing guitar & singing at church. Not being satisfied with the traditional hymns & folksongs available, Jimi began to write his own songs & started his own band to sing them. This band, “Inspirit”, was well received & played up & down the California coast often sharing the stage with some of the most respected artists of the Jesus movement like Karen Lafferty, The Way, & Keith Green. Gathering up a few friends to record the first project for JEMS Music Ministries, the Revelation band was formed, & performed new original material almost every weekend for two solid years, & provided several tracks for a subsequent JEMS project, including Jimi’s own “Smile Song”. Jimi was then asked to fill in as a temporary bass player for “Everlasting” due to his reputation as a multi-instrumentalist & session musician, which led to his taking over most of the songwriting & arranging duties, which in turn led to headlining large events & venues, & releasing two albums. During this time, Jimi’s growing reputation as a luthier & guitar tech was also keeping him busy, as the owner of Performance Guitar in Hollywood. With famous & respected clients like Johnny Graham (Earth wind & Fire), Gerry Beckley (America) & Jane Wiedlin (GoGos) he soon became a fixture on the secular music scene as well, providing personal service that brought him into the greenrooms & parties of the industry’s major power players. Seeing firsthand how difficult the industry could be for those just starting out, he began researching the entire process, helping to produce, engineer & record Everlasting’s second project, & seeking new marketing avenues as well. In 1985 Jimi bowed out of his guitar business & joined TASCAM as a product specialist, assisting end users with applications of professional recording gear, & to provide more security for his family, while working as an engineer, tech & producer for smaller labels on the side, and partnering in a DJ company as well, becoming a respected turntablist and remixer in the process. In April of 2000, Linda Geleris, founder of the Songwriters Network, passed the reins of the organization to Jimi, who immediately created a board of directors, which included Linda & added Thomas “Tommy” Honles as webmaster, with LaRombe, | 7/5/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Deanna Pino on Late Night | On Wednesday July 06, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night our guest is singer/songwriter Deanna Pino. Then we’re taking on all topics, as well as any other news of the day. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. It took eighteen years for Deanna to be reunited with her mother. Kidnapped by her dad at the age of six, the consequences and impact of being abducted didn’t take its toll until Deanna was in my early twenties. Unraveling at the seams from years of being held as an emotional hostage, she suffered through many years of heartache and darkness. Crawling out from underneath the broken pieces of her life, she slowly started to build a new beginning by examining her inner psyche when she discovered Buddhism, which took her from just surviving to thriving. Listen to the show In 1999 Deanna moved from New York City to Los Angeles for a change of pace and although she came from a musical theatre background, she discovered her love for songwriting and knew she had to pursue this new way of communicating her ideas and perspectives. "It has only been through my hardships and triumphs that I am able to make a contribution to society and the world around me. And that’s why I am very excited to share my debut CD, “You Left Me Standing” with you." Her CD is dedicated to missing and recovered children who have been kidnapped by a parent and/or guardian, and is available now through CD Baby and itunes. After our interview with Deanna Pino we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including beer tasting, sports and food during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Late Night Snackins. Psychic Christine Corda on Swoop’s World Primetime | On Thursday June 23, 2011 at 4pm (PST), on Swoop’s World Radio Primetime, we have Psychic Medium and Psychic Paranormal Investigator Christine Corda as our guest. After Christine we'll have another segment of Gamers from Sean and Max, plus odd news of the day and more. Christine Corda, along with her group NESPARA, conducts investigations based on Psychic abilities but also uses the technical aspects to back up any "psychic evidence" received; her group conducts very careful and diligent investigations. Listen to the show She has read for hundreds of people as well has done numerous investigations in the Ct area. But what sets her apart from other psychic mediums is that she is a survivor of an extreme haunting as a result of SRA in her childhood and teen years..controversial? Yes indeed! But she never shies from controversy. In the 80s and 90s Christine suffered severe demonic attack, so much so the Roman Catholic Church was called in and performed a formal exorcism... anyone who knows the RCC knows they do not grant formal exorcisms without very good cause. Her experiences with the demonic and the RCC were very real and very horrific..many people have heard her account of what happened and are educated both on the dangers within the paranormal as well as the difficulties in obtaining help from Paranormal Groups and clergy. Her story is NOT just for "entertainment." Because of her experiences and in-spite of them Christine learned to empower herself through her own Psychic gifts and learn to remove the negative entities from her life and become a highly respected reader and in demand speaker/lecturer in the Connecticut area. Aside from sharing her terrifying account of demonic attacks Christine also counsels people on empowering themselves as well as helping clergy to better understand the need for deliverance and intervention in many peoples lives. Christine Corda's readings for people are extremely accurate as is demonstrated on her weekly radio show with callers, you will not hear her 'digging' for information, you will hear a sincerely gifted individual receiving messages from spirit. Dregs of Pele on Swoop’s World Late Night | On Wednesday June 15, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night our guest is the Dregs of Pele. Then we’re taking on all topics, as well as any other news of the day. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Dregs of Pele (formerly known as The EnableRxs) are a dynamic Rock/Alternative band sprung from the San Fernando Valley grid. The core of Dregs of Pele is shared by singer/songwriter “Lo” Laura Apoliona and guitar player and writer, Scott Jones. Lo, who has been singing since she was four years old, has written extraordinary melodies such as “A Drinking Song” and “The Prisoner’s Wife” on her debut “Lo” released in 2004. Studied in classical voice, she spent the majority of the 1990’s fronting rock bands Fine Rum Punch and Zen Belt in most major venues on the Sunset Strip and a smattering of dives throughout Hollywood, honing her craft and exposing her edges. Listen to the show Scott started his musical career playing lead guitar and singing in several rock bands that played almost everywhere in L.A. from the nearest local dive to the Bonaventure Hotel. His classically influenced, fiery, and tasteful style has been compared to Page and Clapton which goes hand in hand with his magnetic stage presence and Plant peppered voice. Recovering from the business of music, both had independently taken a “break” from the music scene only to meet in the summer of 2010. Sharing the stories of bands and songs loved and lost led them to an impromptu jam in a strip mall stairwell. After wailing their now signature cover, “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You”, Dregs of Pele were born. Scott’s sweetly demented chord structures and strategic bold riffs with Lo’s haunting and powerful voice and disturbing prose are this band’s apocalyptic vulnerability and melodic strength. Dregs of Pele is a rock band for the ceaselessly romantic and hellbound, sinner and saint alike. Dregs of Pele are currently recording their first album. After our interview with Dregs of Pele we’ll be up to all of our usual fun including beer tasting, sports and food during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Late Night Snackins. Musician Marc Platt on Swoop’s World Late Night | On Wednesday June 1, 2011, 8pm-11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night our guest is Musician Marc Platt. Then we’re taking on all topics, as well as any other news of the day. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Talented guitarist, prolific songwriter, and down-to earth human being. “It’s easy to write for TV if you stay focused on the craft of songwriting,” says Platt who works with Maureen Davis, his songwriting partner. “She and I have written together for 10 years and we focus on what is going on in our relationships. We write and record them quickly and get a lot of TV shows.” After our interview with Marc Platt we'll be up to all of our usual fun is on the agenda including beer tasting, sports and food during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Late Night Snackins. Singer/Songwriter Pi Jacobs on Swoop’s World Primetime | On Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 4pm/PST on Swoop’s World Primetime our guest is singer/songwriter Pi Jacobs. This story begins in 2001, when Pi teamed up with Tommy Boy artist / producer Pfilbryte for her first album, Irrational. The response to Irrational was overwhelming, leading Pi to a Management deal with NYC’s Alabina Entertainment, and a European record deal with the French Atoll Music label. Several tours and three albums later, Pi’s 2007 release, The Curse of the Songwriter, was much loved by TV and critics alike. Songs from Curse were featured in several popular TV shows and indie films (below), and Singer Magazine dubbed Pi’s vocals “flexible and flawless”. Listen to the show Pi’s latest offering, Fire Horse Girl, sees her teaming up with veteran producer/engineer Randy Wine (U2, Aretha Franklin). While Fire Horse Girl evokes the whispers of great 70’s singer songwriters, its approach and lyrics are completely fresh. Featuring great musicians, Pi’s smoky alto soars over this warm bed: sultry, but playful, walking the invisible line between musicality and indulgence with tightrope perfection. Lyrically, Fire Horse Girl tackles familiar singer-songwriter topics with a new twist: her lyrics get under your skin and touch your heart. Love, obsession, abandonment, friendship, and commitment, share time in the spotlight. With Fire Horse Girl, Pi keeps its simple. Fun songs you can sing along to as they weave their way into your life, where they belong. Join us at 4pm/PST! Long Beach Pride on Swoop’s World Late Night | On Wednesday May 4, 2011, 8pm -11pm/PST on Swoop’s World Late Night we start the night off with our guests, representatives from Long Beach Pride. We'll get all the scoop on this year's Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival & Parade (the 3rd largest in the nation). At 9pm all of our usual Late Night fun is on the agenda including news of the day, beer tasting, sports, and food during “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, Taylor’s segment of T-Bones Timeout, and Chris’ CLiv’s Late Night Snackins. Listen to the show This week on “Brewskis” Beer Tasting sponsored by DrinksWinesSpirits.com, we are tasting Pre-Prohibition Lager from La Vista, Nebraska based Lucky Bucket Brewery. Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, Inc. (LBLGP, Inc.) was established in October 1983 and produced the first annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival & Parade in June of 1984. The Board Directors felt that, with such a large gay & lesbian population, there was a need to increase awareness and to promote PRIDE and a greater sense of self-worth within the community. Additionally, the Board felt it important to facilitate greater cooperation, mutual respect and understanding between the lesbian & gay community and the community of Long Beach. At first, money to meet the city's stringent fees was in short supply. Yet, after producing only two parades and festivals, LBLGP, Inc. began making outright grants to other non-profit organizations. Shortly after that, LBLGP, Inc. began donating funds to its volunteers' favorite charities. The amount of this contribution is based on the number of hours volunteers work at the parade and festival. Today, LBLGP, Inc. continues the tradition of giving back a portion of the proceeds which has become the hallmark of our organization. For more than a decade now, LBLGP, Inc. has grown to become the large philanthropic organization that it is today--- having granted over a half million dollars in the past five years and nearly one million since its inception. While the main project of Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, Inc. is the annual Pride parade & festival, the organization operates year-round and sponsors other philanthropic projects. Since the beginning, LBLGP, Inc. has spearheaded a toy drive for disabled and disadvantaged children. In 1994 alone, the toy drive collected over 1500 toys distributed in cooperation with Catholic Charities. Over the past several years, the Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival & Parade has become the 3rd largest in the nation, now attracting over 75,000 participants over the two-day celebration. More than 200 marching groups and floats comprise the parade entries since 1995, representing various religious, human service, governmental and social organizations. Patrick Joseph on Swoop’s World Primetime | On Thursday April 14, 2011 at 4pm/PST, our in studio guest is Patrick Joseph. Patrick is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Joseph got his start in music performing in and out of various bands in the Pittsburgh area and collaborating with different songwriters before finally finding his own path as a solo artist at the age of twenty-one, playing acoustic gigs in and around the Pittsburgh region while writing and recording demos of his original material. With the help of social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, Patrick Joseph’s self-recorded demos circulated the internet, receiving positive reviews and gaining a steady internet fan-base which inspired him to release a compilation of these demos in 2007 entitled The Basement Tapes EP. The Basement Tapes EP was distributed through indie music site CDBaby.com where it received top-ratings from fans and is now sold out and out-of-print. “I never intended on putting those songs out there as prematurely as I did,” he explains, “But it just seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Those songs were all just sketches of my early moments as a songwriter, the first steps of exploration.” Listen to the show After nearly two years of playing shows and writing in the Pittsburgh region, Joseph decided it was time for new horizons. “There’s a certain ceiling you feel that you hit in the smaller cities,” he explains. “Even if you don’t actually hit the ceiling full-on, you can see it and become aware of it and it makes you anxious, nervous, a little antsy. I saw the ceiling of Pittsburgh from below and thought maybe I should plant my roots someplace a little bigger, a little brighter.” Taking his own advice, in the fall of 2008 he replanted himself across the country in Los Angeles, California and currently resides in the neighborhood of Los Feliz. Swoop’s World Primetime – April 13, 2011 | On Wednesday April 13, 2011 at 8pm/PST on our Primetime show we'll be talking indie music. Some have asked what the distinction is between our Primetime and Late Night shows. Great question we thought, so here is our best attempt to answer that question. Our Primetime show is much more dedicated to interviews than Late Night. That's mostly because, What guest wants to stay up late to be interviewed? Our Primetime show often interviews indie musicians, authors, business owners, politicians, actors, and icons. You name it and we want to bring it to you. Primetime also, often has more of a local focus on the Long Beach and Southern California region but not always. If the subject or guest is of interest to all it will be discussed. Listen to the show Our Late Night show has more of a loose wide-open party concept, with beer tasting segments, sports and conversations about anything that comes to mind. There are really no limits to what may happen on the Late Night show. Simply put it's not for the faint of heart. Now as you know if you've ever listened to our shows, things can often change. While the above descriptions are true about 90 percent of the time there is no 100 percent definition of our shows other than the goal of keeping you interested and entertained 100 percent of the time. Join us each week on Swoop’s World Primetime at 8pm (PST). Listeners can call in live or join in via our online chat. Our shows are also available on here or for download from iTunes. | 4/12/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Reign Lee & Melissa Cox on Swoop’s World Radio Primetime | Tonight, Thursday April 7, 2011 at 4pm/PST our guest are musicians Reign Lee & Melissa Cox. The two independent artists have joined together and hit the road on The Odometer Destroyer Tour. Tune in check out their music and learn about their great tour. Touring as a solo independent artist is expensive. Rising gas prices, the shaky economy, and closing music venues make it hard for indie musicians to plan, fund, and profit from touring. When Reign Lee and Melissa Cox, two independent singer/songwriters living on opposite sides of the world, met in Fall 2009, they formed a unique friendship bound by music, and a business partnership that would eventually lead them to plan a tandem tour of the southwest United States. "Reign wanted to tour the U.S., and so did I, so instead of competing with each other, we decided to join forces," says Cox. Listen to the interview By combining their resources, income, and efforts, the two award-winning songstresses were able to lower costs and plan a successful tour without breaking the bank. Reign Lee, who lives in Hong Kong, met Melissa, who currently resides in Denver, in 2009. The two women became fast friends, thanks to their similar musical tastes and styles, and their shared attitude that music is a business. That friendship grew into a partnership when the two singers planned a tandem tour through five states Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Nevada between April 9 and 24, 2011. "There is so much competition in the music business and especially between female musicians," Cox says. "We felt it would be more productive and beneficial to both of us if we worked together." The tour, dubbed the Odometer Destroyer Tour due to the sheer number of miles the two artists will cover collectively (roughly 10,000 over the course of 3 weeks), was made possible by donations contributed by the artists fans through Kickstarter.com, an online fundraising service for musicians and artists to raise money for creative projects. Over 50 contributors donated to the tour in return for prizes such as mp3s, cds, and more. Reign Lee, a Chinese Canadian, tours Asia, the United States and the UK extensively. She is the #1 Hong Kong alternative artist on Reverbnation.com, one of the largest musician websites in the world. An Independent Music Award nominee, her songs have been featured worldwide by Microsoft and Reverbnation, and recently she signed a global distribution deal with Blue Pie Records. Reign won the International Free Ride Song Contest, and received Honor Awards in the 11th and 12th Annual Unisong International Songwriting Contest, and the the Top Finalist honor in the 2007 Great American Song Contest. Delaware native turned Denver transplant Melissa Cox has shared the stage with the Spin Doctors, Sister Hazel, Three Dog Night, Tom Chapin, Catie Curtis, and many others. In 2008 she was voted one of the Best Musical Folk Artists in the U.S. by the DDOA / National Endowment of the Arts. In 2006, her song elijah, elijah was a finalist in the National Song of the Year Contest. Melissa, who is also the lead singer of national Celtic rock band Mythica, has appeared at hundreds of the largest Celtic, Folk and World festivals in the country. The singers' success is just one example of how the indie music revolution is fueled by fan support and a true "do it yourself" mentality and work ethic, without record label backing. "It's the grassroots effort and the generosity of our fans that make this tour possible," Lee says. "That's what music is all about: community." Reign Lee Alternative artist Reign Lee possesses a lyrical, dynamic style that has firmly established her as a singer-songwriter with an edge. With a list of influences as diverse as Patti Smith, the Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Aimee Mann, the Cars, and the Arcade Fire, Reign has carved out her own brand of what it means to be alternative. SubCity Dwellers on Swoop’s World Primetime | On Wednesday 04/06/11 @ 8pm/PST Our guest is SubCity Dwellers, a very cool band from Winnipeg, Canada. After Primetime and our interview with the band, join us on the Talk Story Radio network for Swoop's World Late Night! "We'll make your knees jerk when the beat starts to pound, we'll make you dance like there's no one around," is a promise that SubCity Dwellers make on their new album "When the Beat Starts to Pound" and keep every time the octet plays live. Winnipeg's own SubCity Dwellers first formed in 2002 and have climbed out of the back alleys, maturing to the cutting edge sound we now hear. They truly are a well-rounded, high energy dance band with a party in their back pocket. Listen to the interview. The musical styles these artists offer are heavily influenced by their individual, wide ranging tastes and backgrounds - Strong reggae, punk, soul, blues and rock'n'roll influences mix with lots of edge and occasional soca and roots feels for a truly danceable sound. Each member of the group brings their own personalized touch to both the studio and the stage, tipping a hat to their respective roots, which results in passionate, dynamic songs that "reveal uncommon depth and skill, not to mention a clear sense of history" (Adrian Mack, NERVE Magazine). Their fresh SubCity sound keeps the dance floor packed and sweaty all night long with punks, moonstompers, hippies, rockers and everyone else - shoulder to shoulder for an unforgettable night of intense energy and the most fun you've had since… Well let's just say this isn't a party you want to miss. Nadia Kay on Swoop’s World Primetime | On Wednesday March 30, 2011 at 8pm/PST Swoop’s World Primetime our guest is Nadia Kay. Nadia has recently written and released her second album "RELOADED" followed by a brand new dance single "WHY" while continuing to tour and grow her already impressive fan base. The daughter of a well - known Jazz composer, Nadia was immersed in the music business from day one. She recalls singing along with her father as a young child, both at home and in rehearsals with his band. She spent her playtime writing melodies on the piano her father gave to her, all the while dreaming of someday sharing the stage with him. Soon she began performing in school productions like "Oklahoma" and "Rent," each experience further strengthening her resolve to pursue a career in entertainment. But first, she followed her parents' advice and earned a marketing degree while attending a private business school in New York. After performing at open-mic nights around Manhattan with her Pop/Rock band, Nadia eventually met a music producer who would soon become her mentor and close friend. Listen to the show As the world is introduced to Nadia Kay's edgy new sound and velvety voice, many will no doubt take note of the Ukrainian beauty's ability to entertain. With the launch of her new music video "Captain Sky Love" she is excited to take her music career to the next level. Powerful and polished, her creative vision is a high-energy-pop-dance-story beautifully told with fierce beats, sexy lyrics and flawless choreography. Backed by four talented dancers, Nadia is currently touring the US. Join us each week on Swoop’s World Primetime at 8pm (PST). Listeners can call in live or join in via our online chat. Customer Reviews
Great show! These guys keep it local and interesting,
This show is still new and I've only heard 3 episodes, but it's already secured a spot in my weekly rotation. So, many "local" podcasts lack polish. Either the info is good, but the host lacks personality -- or worse, the host is all personality but the facts are a bit sketchy. Swoop and Peter have a good banter that keeps the show flowing, while still staying on topic. They are also doing a great job of covering a lot of interesting topics for Long Beach -- everything from bike culture to the city council. I love the variety! Keep 'em coming.
cool show about long beach
really liked the variety of the show. i've listened to all the podcasts and i've heard musicians, politicians and business people. the focus is on the city of long beach and the events and happenings that take place there. these guys really seem to be connected and sincere in their efforts to promote the city. if you live or work in the LBC and want to know more about what's going here, this is the show for you.
Diggin Swoops
At first I wasn't sure I was gonna be into a local show. But these guys really know my city. Like what they been doing. They keep things moving and now I look forward to hearing them every week. Keep up the good work fellas. If you are into the LBC check them out...
