Podcast Description
Tech tAUk is a weekly show covering the world of technology from a student's perspective, focused on exploring all of the ways that our lives and our society are immersed in tech and how it is changing our world. Along with, of course, a healthy sense of humor and an occasional dose of sarcasm. Tech tAUk is a production of ATV, the student-run television station at American University in Washington, DC.

| 1 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk November 5, 2011 – Politically Occupied Edition | The Occupy Tech tAUk Movement launched by our crew's self-declared union (http://techtauk.auatv.com/2011/11/17/tech-tauk-crew-labor-dispute/) continues, while in the meantime our show veers a bit more into the political sphere with the launch of our new political-tech segment, AmeriTech 2012. | 2 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk October 22, 2011 – The Great Outdoors Edition | You know the stereotype: techies like us don't get out enough. We don't take the time to enjoy nature. Well, we set out to prove the naysayers wrong on this episode, as we break free from our technology (except for the camera equipment and stuff) to go on a Family Weekend picnic at Battery-Kemble Park (near AU in Washington, DC). Alas, the episode is foiled by a crew member strike, interrupting dogs, and giant branches of "bamboo." (http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/21/murdoch-on-myspace-i-made-a-huge-mistake/) For the remainder of the episode, Douglas and Josh discuss a bit about how technology has made it harder for our society to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors, and then Josh is joined by his father, Dr. David Feldman, to discuss various outdoor tech gadgets. Finally, our Random Geeky Fact of the Week looks at the intelligence of squirrels, and then Douglas responds to SportsZone's (http://sportszone.auatv.com) "Thumbs Down"s at our show by responding in kind with a FLUNK. | 3 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk October 8, 2011 – In Remembrance Edition | Like everyone, we were shocked to learn about the death of Steve Jobs, and so this episode is dedicated to his memory and passionate life. Even if we did have a semi-unorthodox way of finding out about it, as depicted in the opening to this episode (featuring special guest Greg Henderson from The American Dream (http://americandream.auatv.com), played by Justin Horowitz). Check out the teaser ad for this episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o83VCKX6uG4) for a preview! Our tech headlines this week: * Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs Passes Away at 56 (http://www.apple.com/stevejobs/) * Supreme Court Rejects Internet Music Download Case (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/04/us-internet-downloads-idUSTRE7923AM20111004) * Microsoft Kills the Zune (http://www.macworld.com/article/162641/2011/10/microsoft_kills_the_zune.html) * Apple Predicted "Siri" in a 1987 Concept Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WdS4TscWH8) Then, we do a live review the Google Chromebook (http://www.google.com/chromebook/) and Chrome OS, via a new Acer Chromebook that ATV recently acquired for internal use. One of our favorite Tech tAUk segments returns, as Josh dishes out his latest dose of FLUNKS. Highlights include some unfortunate translations of "Siri" in other languages, the Westboro Baptist Church's hypocrisy in protesting Steve Jobs' funeral, Shazam offering Kelly Clarkson as a prize, and Google contributing to the creation of a new beer. Tech tAUk's gaming correspondents Chris Pyle and Mitchell Stover return with another Game Zone segment, wherein they force Douglas to try to play a video game, specifically Portal 2 (http://www.thinkwithportals.com), with disastrous results. Finally, our Random Geeky Fact of the Week looks at failed 1990s software product Microsoft Bob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Bob) and how it was actually bundled on Windows XP CDs (http://www.mydigitallife.info/microsoft-bob-free-download-on-every-windows-xp-cd-and-video-demo/) to fill up remaining disk space. And our Viral Video of the Week is a memorable version of the "Think Different" ad narrated by Steve Jobs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEPhLqwKo6g). And in case you missed it, be sure to also check out our season premiere episode (http://techtauk.auatv.com/episodes/sep-17-2011/), which we dedicated to discussing Steve Jobs' legacy at Apple in more detail (following his resignation as CEO). | 11/5/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 4 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk October 1, 2011 – Chuck Testa Edition | In a world with so many divisions and challenges, it's reassuring to know that we can ship dead animals from anywhere to be taxidermized by Chuck Testa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJP1DphOWPs). This episode is dedicated to that irresistible internet meme as we catch up on the latest in tech news, including the latest product announcements to come out from Cupertino. Our tech headlines this week: * Study: Violent Video Games Reduce Real Violence (http://gantdaily.com/2011/09/30/study-violent-video-games-reduce-real-violence/) * Amazon Unveils $199 Kindle Fire Tablet, $99 Kindle Touch (http://www.macworld.com/article/162550/2011/09/amazon_unveils_199_kindle_fire_tablet_79_kindle_touch.html) * Anderson Cooper Attacks Reddit for "Jailbait" Subreddit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuMdQRRLoYg) * Google, Motorola Deal Examined by Department of Justice, Again (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/29/google-mototola-department-of-justice_n_987162.html) * Google's Eric Schmidt Expounds on his Senate Testimony (http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/on-leadership/googles-eric-schmidt-expounds-on-his-senate-testimony/2011/09/30/gIQAPyVgCL_story.html) * Microsoft "Accidentally" Tags Chrome as Malware (http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/30/microsoft-accidentally-tags-chrome-as-malware/) We then come clean off of Apple's October 4 "Let's Talk iPhone" event to discuss the announcement of the new iPods, iCloud, iOS 5, and the new iPhone 4S, along with Siri, as well as Tim Cook's role in his first product keynote since being named CEO of Apple. Because this segment went really long, we included highlights of this segment in the episode, and have posted the full discussion as a YouTube clip (http://techtauk.auatv.com/clips/iphone-4s-launch-event-discussion/). Douglas then talks about Inbox Zero (http://www.inboxzero.com), an incredible methodology for helping us get control of the massive amounts of email in our lives. Josh moves from email to snail mail, as he looks at the ongoing debates about the funding of the postal service, and how its challenges arise from its failure to adapt to new technology and our society's failure to adequately address 21st century problems. Finally, we close out the show by addressing the Chuck Testa meme, looking at HTML for Babies (http://www.amazon.com/HTML-Babies-Web-Design/dp/0615487661) in our Random Geeky Fact of the Week, and watching floppy disk drives play the Imperial March (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHJOz_y9rZE) in our Viral Video of the Week. And we've got a little Easter Egg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IyOvF1ZNcY) for fun as well. | 11/2/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 5 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk September 24, 2011 – Of Games and Game Shows Edition | It's our second Fall '11 episode of Tech tAUk, and it's chalk full of news, games, and just plain hilarity. And we're excited to welcome a number of guest appearances within our first real video game segment, and an incredible comedic sketch that we just plain stole from SNL. Our tech headlines this week: * Netflix Splits Off DVD-by-Mail Service to "Qwikster" (http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/what-netflix-did-right-and-what-it-did-wrong/2011/09/19/gIQABGgdfK_story.html?hpid=z4), but There's Already a @Qwikster Twitter Account (http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/18/uh-oh-qwikster-already-has-a-lively-twitter-account-but-its-not-owned-by-netflix/) * CrunchFund Causes Power Struggle Between TechCrunch & AOL-HuffPo Media (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/23/idUS219975812220110923) * Apple Blacking Out Vacation Days (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/09/24/apple_blacking_out_vacation_days_during_second_week_of_october.html) for Imminent iPhone 5 Introduction (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/09/21/apple_to_hold_media_event_hosted_by_ceo_tim_cook_on_oct_4_report.html) * Google CEO Eric Schmidt Testifies Before Senate Committee (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/22/technology/google-takes-the-hot-seat-in-washington.html?scp=2&sq=google&st=cse) * George Lucas' Tweaks to 'Star Wars' Incurs Fans' Wrath (http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/09/15/george-lucas-tweaks-to-star-wars-incurs-fans-wrath/) * Mexican Drug Cartels Now Menace Social Media (http://www.npr.org/2011/09/23/140745739/mexican-drug-cartels-now-menace-social-media?ps=cprs) Tech tAUk's Video Game Experts Chris Pyle and Mitchell Stover join us in the Game Zone, our newest segment, to talk about Steam (http://store.steampowered.com), an online platform for computer video games, and they do a live review of Team Fortress 2 (http://www.tf2.com). Then, we take a game show break to play Celebrity Jeopardy! (Technology Edition) with "guest" celebrities Steve Jobs*, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sean Connery. Too bad all of them are scoring below negative one thousand dollars. Finally, Douglas' Random Geeky Fact of the Week examines the origins of the size of compact discs, and in honor of Jim Henson's 75th birthday, our Viral Video of the Week is the Ode to Joy, performed by Beaker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnT7pT6zCcA). *Disclaimer: This segment was filmed a few weeks before the public announcement of Steve Jobs' death. | 10/7/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 6 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk September 17, 2011 – Bon VoyJobs Edition | Tech tAUk is back, and better than ever on our Season 3 premiere! Decked out with new graphics, a new theme song, and benched from space, we dedicate this episode as a tribute to former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. After opening the show with a singing tribute to Jobs, we look back at the accomplishments that Steve Jobs has made through Apple and NeXT to the computing industry and to our modern society. We then follow that up with our latest Grate Da Bait about Apple's future without Jobs at the helm. We then veer off a bit as Josh discusses the unique relationship between Steve Jobs' health and Apple's stock value, and then our crew member Mitch Stover joins Douglas to talk about the controversy that arose this summer over Final Cut Pro X. (For more, check out Douglas' Review of Final Cut Pro X (http://techtauk.auatv.com/2011/07/02/review-final-cut-pro-x/).) Finally, we close out the show in Weschler Theater, where we receive a visit from a special "guest." Although we didn't cover any tech headlines on the show, we did film a separate online segment recapping the biggest tech stories from the summer, which we will post later this weekend. Whether you're a Jobs-aholic or simply looking for a job, we're sure you'll enjoy our season premiere of Tech tAUk. It's good to be back! | 9/24/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Douglas then rants about the strange way that the weirdest YouTube videos seem to become the ones that goes "viral," and he examines this trend with an analysis of a recent video of a guy alone in the a Metro car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arFYc3H0AEQ) which went viral in early April. Josh then counters with an infomercial for legal services which looks at many of the other bogus lawsuits being made against tech companies. | 8 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk April 2, 2011 – Social Learning Summit Edition | The 2011 Social Learning Summit (http://ausmcedu.org/sls11/) the first event of its kind at AU, was held at the School of International Service on April 1-3, presented by the AU Social Media Club (http://ausmcedu.org). The event attracted bloggers, social media experts, video producers, students, professors, and many more from across AU and across the region to discuss the current state of social media and its expanding role in education. Tech tAUk attended the entire summit and filmed nearly 22 hours of footage on-location in order to provide exclusive coverage of this groundbreaking event. We filmed most of the sessions in their entirety and conducted over a dozen interviews with panelists and presenters. This special episode of Tech tAUk opens with an interview with Alex Priest, the President of the AU Social Media Club, followed by three segments combining clips of the sessions and our interviews to focus on three of the main themes of the summit: social media in education, social media's effects in society, and social media's effects in our daily lives. Finally, we close out the episode by recapping the summit and sharing our thoughts on the event and the topics discussed. Over the next few days, we will be uploading all of our extended footage onto our website and YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/techtauk). | 9 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk February 26, 2011 – CSI Edition | Call your neighborhood forensic scientist for this crime-filled episode of Tech tAUk. What started as an innocent David Caruso parody (which, just a few days later, was also done by Jon Stewart (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-march-2-2011/the-pardon-of-the-christ)) devolved into Josh on the run for a suspected murder, and eventually the telling of a forthcoming doomsday scenario. But the segment twists itself into a surprise ending... Douglas then shows off our gorgeous new monitor as he demonstrates a number of his trusty tools for taking control of the audio on your Mac, demoing Call Recorder (http://ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/), Audio Hijack Pro (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/), WireTap Studio (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/), and Soundflower (http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/). Then, inspired by the upcoming Art of Video Games Exhibit (http://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/archive/2012/games/) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (coming in 2012), Josh invites on crew members Laurel Schwaebe, Mitchell Stover, Steve Chang, and Tom Blandi, to discuss what exactly is artistic about video games (while they, of course, play them). Finally, for this week's Random Geeky Fact of the Week, Douglas discusses Unix time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_time), and how it contributes to the Year 2038 problem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem), also known as the Unix millenium bug. And for our Viral Video of the Week, we show off a dad who made a playable Angry Birds birthday cake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hwVRzaQNkA) for his son. | 10 | ExplicitVideoTech tAUk February 5, 2011 – Bowling for Tech Edition | It's the weekend of the big major league football game with lots of overpriced ads and Sunday barbecues with extra chips and salsa and doing our best to avoid invoking NFL copyright infringement Bowl. And we head into the sports weekend in style with our own sports coverage (actually a weird analogy that we thought up in the locker room), as well as our look at how AU's favorite neighbor, the Department of Homeland Security, is out to ruin it for everyone. Our tech headlines this week: * Department of Homeland Security Seizes Sports-Streaming Websites for Copyright Infringement (example (http://atdhe.net/)) * Egypt Internet Comes Back Online (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12346929), Vodafone Network 'hijacked' by Egypt (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12357694) * Hacktivists Target Egypt and Yemen Regimes (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12364654), Anonymous (internet group) (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/a/anonymous_internet_group/index.html) * Google Previews Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" (http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/02/android-honeycomb-ipad/) * Japan's Elderly Fail to Welcome Their Robot Overlords (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12347219) * Apple, News Corp. Douglas then interviews Miranda Gale, Director of Online Operations for the AU Social Media Club (http://www.ausmcedu.org), a new organization promoting the use of social media in education. They discuss a bit about how social media can be used in the classroom and in the workforce, and also discuss the Social Media Club's "Hashtag the Campus" campaign. Then, Josh delivers yet another round of Flunks, including an inappropriate tweet by a clothes designer, a delinquent 9-9-9 operator, and a famous inmate with a life sentence texting from prison. Finally, we wrap up our Random Geeky Fact of the Week with a look at an obscure 1998 law attempting to protect minors on the internet, despite an obvious loophole. | 2/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
